This part-time, work-based course will help you develop the leadership and management abilities necessary to deliver high-quality health care services. It is aimed at experienced clinicians who want to combine study with full-time careers.

The Management (Leadership for Clinicians) MSc places emphasis on areas of management particularly relevant to the public services, and develops individuals who think innovatively, negotiate difficult situations and wish to enhance organisational performance. It will enable experienced professionals to critically enhance their management skills and challenge both themselves and their organisations.

The course will enhance your knowledge, skills, confidence and competencies to address complex organisational problems in a fast changing political and global environment.

It also emphasises the need for 'soft' and 'hard' management skills, promoting creative problem-solving, communication, multidisciplinary thinking, team work, and leadership and management skills. The emphasis is on developing the knowledge in an applied and integrated way. Your written projects will link an area of learning to your work situation.

The course is delivered by block mode. Students attend lectures for intensive weekly periods. You only need to attend seven separate weeks.

Course Content:

The Management (Leadership for Clinicians) MSc is delivered block mode, with additional supervision and assessment time. There are seven five-day blocks, plus an induction programme, workshops and an individual project of strategic relevance to your organisation.

The course is normally completed within two years. However, if you are unable to take all of the modules during this period then you can postpone individual elements and complete the course over a longer period of time.

If your circumstances change and it is not possible to complete the whole course, you can exit with a postgraduate certificate after completing one-third of the course or a postgraduate diploma after completing two-thirds of the course.

Each module explores a different aspect of functional management and leadership, and is examined by written assessment in the form of a work-based project.

Year 1:

Year 1 will provide you with a sound understanding of the impact of the external environment on organisations. It will help you develop analytical and critical capability, with specific reference to the public sector, and it will examine organisational behaviour and how to enhance effectiveness.

The second part of this year will examine issues relating to strategy formulation and implementation, with an aim of enhancing organisational performance. Issues include turn around strategies, quality and project management, and examining financial management such as costing and budgeting models as well as financial control systems.

The Year 1 syllabus comprises:

Year 2:

The second part of Year 2 focuses on strengthening strategic thinking and service planning abilities by studying a module on strategy and change. Finally, you are required to investigate an integrative management topic of strategic relevance to your own organisation in a larger project.

The course does not require background in programming or data analysis and for those with no such background appropriate training is offered to catch up with others who already have such training or experience. Course Aims

The aims of the programme are to equip students with knowledge of a range cutting-edge areas of computer science research and applications and to prepare students to be successful in a variety of computer science related jobs. The course covers advanced computer science topics, including user interaction design, big data, cloud computing, security, intelligent systems and mobile-oriented web applications. Core Modules:

User Interaction Design (15 credits – Semester 1): The module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to work on User Interaction Design based on an evaluated assessment of the factors associated with a given application or user interaction scenario.

Distributed Intelligent Systems (15 credits – Semester 1): This module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to develop applications to control intelligent systems in a distributed and collaborative context, including the programming of robots or intelligent home appliances (e.g. TV, fridge, etc. equipped with embedded computers).

Statistical Techniques for Data Analytics (15 credits – Semester 1): This module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to develop applications to store, process, distribute, visualise and analyse large volumes of big data using distributed databases, statistical techniques and machine intelligence methods.

Cloud Computing (15 credits – Semester 2): The module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to understand the principles of operations of cloud computing and to develop applications for cloud computing environments, e.g. data storage and distribution, software-as-service, interactive content services.

Web Technologies and Security (15 credits – Semester 2): To module provided an understanding of contemporary web technologies used for both server and client side development of web applications, with particular focus on mobile applications, and an understanding of security aspects of such applications and of the defence methods and techniques employed to provide security.

Collaborative Application Development (15 credits – Semester 2): The module places students in a real world scenario requiring co-operation and communication as well as analysis and design skills. This will involve work for a real world client working as a development team.

It also provides knowledge of ethical, legal and social issues related to the development and deployment of Information Technology.

Teaching & Assessment

All first semester 15 – credit taught modules, with the exception of one module delivered over two semesters, will be delivered in block mode, i.e. each of these modules will be delivered over a period of six consecutive weeks. In any week at most two block mode modules will be scheduled to be delivered during the first semester. All taught modules in the second semester are delivered along the whole semester.

The taught modules are mainly assessed by coursework, with examinations in some of the modules. Project assessment is based largely on a substantial final report.

Additional Costs

Additional costs may be incurred for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines. Some travel costs may be incurred if an external project or placement is undertaken; any such costs will be discussed with the student before the project is confirmed. It will be possible for the student to select an internal project and that would not incur any additional travel costs.

Course content

The course provides a rounded suite of managerial and commercial skills, rooted in a critical understanding of today's media and content industries, building on our role as a leader in UK media research. There is still a shortage of qualified engineering specialists in the oil and gas sector, with skilled professionals enjoying competitive salaries.

This programme trains specialist engineers in oilfield structural design, fabrication and installation. It is aimed both at engineering and physical science graduates who are interested in working in the oil and gas industry and practising professionals who wish to specialise in the design, analysis and construction of oil and gas installations.

Aims

With high demand for qualified oil and gas engineers, graduates enter a global job market and can expect exciting career prospects - a trend that looks likely to continue for years to come.

As the industry now seeks the rapid drilling and commissioning of new wells to meet energy demands, along with major investment in heavy oils and shale oil and gas, skilled engineers who can rapidly design and commission oilfield installations will be the backbone for growth in this industry. It is precisely this type of engineer that Brunel’s programme will develop.

A distinguishing feature of the course is its ambition to instil systems thinking, by treating structures and their operating environment holistically as a system – helping graduates develop the skills to address a wide range of complex engineering problems rapidly.

Course Content

The programme duration will be 12 months for full-time study, or 24 months for part-time.

The taught part of the programme will take place during the Autumn and Spring terms over 24 weeks. Students will be encouraged to start planning their dissertation at the beginning of the programme. During the Summer term, students will be expected to focus their effort on their dissertation project, researching the dissertation topic full-time. Part-time students will be allowed an extended period to execute their dissertation project in line with the overall programme duration. However, they will be expected to devote an equivalent of at least one day per week on their dissertation project.

This programme has been developed with extensive consultation with the industry. It will be delivered by Brunel staff members and by industrial specialists. The programme structure is shown below and comprises two parts:

Core modules: The taught part of the course (Part 1) worth 120 credits. This includes a set of compulsory modules that provides fundamentals of structural and process engineering, and focuses on providing an understanding of how to design oil and gas structures such as pipelines, offshore and onshore to withstand internal loading induced by complex internal flows of oil and gas and also external loads such as waves and wind. Throughout fundamental mathematical, computational, experimental, testing and inspection techniques as well as codes of practice are taken into account. Civil engineering and construction aspects are also taught.

Dissertation: Your dissertation project forms Part 2 of the programme and is worth 60 credits.

Delivery will take place in block mode teaching with each module requiring a week-long teaching schedule. Laboratory sessions will take place at specialist facilities in the week following the module delivery and will last for up to three days each.

Part-time (24 months) MSc and PGDip:

In the part-time mode, four taught modules are taken each year with the completion of the dissertation following in term three of the second year.

Full-time and part-time (12 and 24 months) PGCert:

Students must take the Design and Construction Installations and Petroleum Production Fundamentals modules and select any other two modules.

Work Placements

Brunel has a purpose built award-winning Professional Development Centre with over 30 staff, including specialist industry consultants. The Placement service includes CV writing, one-to-one guidance and mock interviews. Brunel was named ‘Best University Placement Service’ at the Rate My Placement Awards in 2012.

Teaching

Students are introduced to subject material, including key concepts, information and approaches, through a mixture of standard lectures and seminars, laboratory practicals, self-study and individual research reports. Supporting material is available online. The aim is to challenge students and inspire them to expand their own knowledge and understanding.

Preparation for work is achieved through the development of 'soft' skills such as communication, planning, management and team work.
In addition, guest speakers from industries will provide a valuable insight into the real world of the oil and gas sector.

Many elements of coursework involve, and reward, the use of initiative and imagination. Some of the projects may be linked with research in the College's research institutes.

Assessment

Each module is assessed either by formal examination, written assignments and laboratories or a combination of these. Cut-off dates for receipt of assignments are specified at the beginning of the academic year. Examinations are normally taken in December and May.

Special Features

Students will be able to access laboratory facilities at the recently formed NSIRC site which are extensive, modern and well equipped.

Although we recruit a large number of highly qualified students to our undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees each year, we don’t forget that you are an individual. From the beginning of your time here, you are allocated a personal tutor who will guide you through academic and pastoral issues.

The College is research intensive as our academics are actively involved in cutting-edge research. Much of this research is undertaken with collaborators outside the University, including leading oil and gas companies, construction companies, water utilities, and other leading industrial firms. There is an emphasis on whole organism biology, the ecology and biogeography of tropical marine organisms, and the evolutionary mechanisms that underlie their diversity.
Proximity to the Great Barrier Reef provides unparalleled opportunities for investigating ecological and evolutionary questions for reef fish, corals, and other marine organisms.
Students will develop their knowledge and skills in quantitative marine ecology, conservation biology, and the biology, life history and taxonomy of tropical marine organisms. Preliminary coursework subjects consist of semester-long offerings. More advanced subjects are offered by block mode, which are 2-week intensive sessions on campus. Teaching and learning

The core areas of study are based on the following key themes:

Each of these four themes is informed by six strands of subject specialist knowledge: Economics, Accounting and Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations and Project Management, Marketing and Leadership and Strategic Management. The delivery of the modules is sequential so that you're able to apply the latest managerial theories to a real life situation in a holistic approach from the outset.

Although the acquisition of knowledge and understanding will be delivered through a variety of strategies, the use of real life case studies is central to our teaching and learning strategy.

Real life case study:
At the start of the course each participant chooses a case study (or case studies if one does not cover all scenarios) based on their disciplinary background and/ or the chosen MBA flavour. The teaching methods are integrated throughout the four core modules and demonstrated in examples and applied to the case study. For example, under the first module-Inside the Modern Organisation – the case study is used so that the participant can address the key issues across the various disciplinary streams.

Master classes:
A series of master classes delivered by external experts in the various specialist fields will be delivered throughout the academic year enabling our students to engage with contemporary management issues.

Each of the four core modules will be delivered by a team of academics from each of the subject discipline stream. LSBU has recently been appointed, as one of a small group of universities, to Buying Solutions Pan Government Framework Agreement of study and qualifications in Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and Masters in Public Administration (MPA). We are the only London-based university to be approved to deliver both the MPA and MBA awards to government staff on a part-time and executive basis.

Course Structure

The course is structured in two parts. Part A. Mastery knowledge and Part B. Application studies. All students complete Part A. Depending upon prior qualifications you may receive credit for part A or part B or a combination of the two.

PART A. Mastery knowledge
These units will provide you with a comprehensive study of core management constructs and the impact they have on decision-making in public sector organisations. These units will develop your capacity as a critical and creative professional who is able to apply your knowledge of a specialisation to provide effective and sound governance and solutions in public environments.

PART B. Application studies
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. This could be achieved by selecting complementary units offered across the university or by undertaking specified units which provide a research pathway towards a Doctor of Philosophy course.

Who is it for?

This Masters course is aimed at IT professionals with approximately five years’ experience and is intended to provide them with the skills that they need to progress to a management role in information security and risk. The course will appeal to companies and professionals that need to develop or improve their capability in managing IT-related security, in order to enter markets with higher demands of dependability and security, comply with new regulations, or re-qualify for new roles.

Objectives

Concerns about cyber security and information risk have led to a growing market for technical specialists, but there is also a need for more senior professionals with an awareness of both the technical and the business issues who can bridge the gap between IT security and business risk.

On this Management of Information Security and Risk MSc programme you will learn about both the technical and the business issues that can bridge the gap between IT security and business risk.

Understand how to communicate these risks to both the technical staff and the executive business team (CEO, CIO, CFO and COO) in a language they share. Focus on human-machine interaction and decision making within today's increasingly complex Political-Economical-Socio-Technical (PEST) systems.

Find out about latest industry and government standards, legislation and best practice from leading technical experts and network with your peers to compare and contrast best practices from different industries.

Teaching and learning

The modules are taught by academics at the Centre for Software Reliability, within the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, and also by visiting lecturers from industry. We also have invited speakers from academia and industry in most modules. Teaching takes place via seminars, lectures, group work and tutorials. The assessment is through coursework only – this consists of written work (individual and group), presentations and peer review.

The modules will be delivered in block mode, with students taking two modules per term. Each module consists of two blocks as follows:
-Thursday evening: 5pm - 9pm
-Friday: 9am-5pm
-Saturday: 9am-5pm

In summary, assuming attendance at the Thursday evening sessions can be done without having to take any time off from work, the students are expected to take eight Fridays off from work in a calendar year (though some employers may allow their employees to take these times off as study leave), and they will need to also attend classes for a further eight Saturdays (i.e. two Fridays and two Saturdays per module). Timetables are for guidance only and are subject to change.

Modules

The course covers the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in senior roles in information security and risk.

The course supports the extra breadth of knowledge required by people with professional experience to help them progress towards target roles in management or consulting on security, assurance and risk.

Applicants can also apply to enrol on individual modules as CPDs. It will then be possible for you to gradually build credits for the MSc should you wish to take this route. City, University of London is also an approved MoD Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) scheme provider (ID-1538).

Graduates should be suitable for consideration as the CSO or Security Architects and Senior Information Risk Managers and would also greatly help them in information security Consultancy and Auditing roles.

Our previous and existing cohort of students have all been employed full-time in a wide range of companies, including multi-billion pound turnover internationals in the aviation industry, global auditing companies (e.g. KPMG), media companies (e.g. Sky and Sony), financial services companies (e.g. Deutsche Bank) in the City of London, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), government departments and NHS trusts. The programme helps students build a strong network with their peers and maintain it as part of their career development.
