- The connection between the brain and cognition
How does your brain enable you to remember a certain event? What happens in your brain when you listen to music? How does your brain adapt itself to certain changes, such as a haemorrhage or other form of damage? How do you distinguish between important and relatively unimportant information in the world around you? How do you focus your attention on a playing child? How does our consciousness work? These are just a few of the questions that neurocognitive scientists would like to see answered.

- Neurocognition in Nijmegen: the cutting edge
The Radboud University has an outstanding reputation in the field of neurocognition. In 2002, the ultramodern Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (DCCN) was officially opened on campus. This centre draws many young researchers from all over the world and to a large extent determines the nature of the Plasticity and Memory specialisation. In 2008 the DCCN formed together with the Donders Centre for Cognition (formerly NICI) and the Donders Centre for Neuroscience the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour.

General requirements:

- Bachelor's degree
The graduation date of the last attained BA/BSc degree relevant for this programme must be within five years of applying to the programme.

- English skills
The Cognitive Neuroscience Master's programme (MSc CNS) is an English programme: all courses and examinations are taught in English. For the general language requirements of the Radboud University click here. Foreign students please note that the MSc CNS programme requires the following minimum scores: TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test), 100 (internet-based test); IELTS 7.0 or higher.

- Mathematics & Physics
Students who did not follow physics in their highschool curriculum and/or who have not been trained in mathematics at level B (including concepts such as matrix algebra, differentation, integration, complex numbers), are advised before the start of the programme to work on the assignment in Chapters 1, 2, 7, 8 and 11 (three chapters on physics and two on mathematics) of R.K. Hobbie: "Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology", Springer Verlag, New York, 1997; third edition, ISBN 1-56396-458-9).

Career prospects

If you have successfully completed the Master’s programme in Plasticity and Memory, you will be able to conduct neuroimaging and neurobiological research. You will have ample knowledge of the anatomical and neurophysiological aspects of the human brain and theoretical cognition/neurocognition models. This will enable you to conduct independent research into the neurofunctional architecture of cognitive key functions, such as perception, attention, memory, language, planning and targeted actions. With this educational background you should be able to find a position with one of the research institutes in the Netherlands or abroad, government institutions or specialised companies (e.g. in the pharmaceutical industry).

Assessment

The project module is examined by a presentation and dissertation. The Research Methods and Project Design module is examined by several components of continuous assessment. The other modules are assessed by examinations and smaller components of continuous assessment. MSc students must gain credit from all the modules. For the PDip, you must gain at least 120 credits in total, and pass certain modules to meet the learning outcomes of the PDip programme.

- Communications

The Group’s activities cover system and component technologies from microwave to terahertz frequencies. These include photonics, antennae and wireless components for a broad range of communication systems. The Group has extensive software research tools together with antenna anechoic chambers, network and spectrum analysers to millimetre wave frequencies and optical signal generation, processing and measurement facilities.

Electronic Engineering provides a broad master’s-level study of some of the most important aspects of electronic engineering today. It builds on your undergraduate knowledge of core aspects of electronics, supported by a module in Engineering Business Environment and Energy Policies, which provides you with an understanding of the context of engineering in the early 21st Century.

Optional placement
We offer a great opportunity to boost your career prospects through an optional one year placement as part of your postgraduate studies. We have a dedicated Placement Unit which will help you obtain this. Once on your placement you will be supported by your Visiting Tutor to ensure that you gain maximum benefit from the experience. Placements begin after the taught component of the course has been completed - usually around June - and last for one year. When you return from your work placement you will begin your dissertation.

Teaching and Assessment

Modules are delivered through a mixture of lectures, tutorials and laboratories. The methodology ensures a good balance between theory and practice so that real engineering problems are better understood, using strong theoretical and analytical knowledge translated into practical skills.

Contact and learning hours

You will normally attend 4 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week for each module undertaken during term time, for full time study this would be 16 hours per week during term time. You are expected to undertake around 212 further hours of independent study per 30 credit modules. Industry Accreditation

he course is fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) which is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, with more than 150,000 members in 127 countries.

IET accreditation recognises the high standard of the course and confirms the relevance of its content. In order to achieve IET accreditation the course has had to reach a certain standard in areas such as the course structure, staffing, resourcing, quality assurance, student support and technical depth.

The benefits of an IET accredited course include increased opportunities, being looked on favourably by employers and completing the first step in your journey to achieving professional Chartered Engineer (CEng) status which can be applied for following a period of suitable industrial experience after graduation.

This degree has been accredited by IET under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Facilities

You will have flexible access to our laboratories and workshops which include: electrical and electronic experimental facilities in general electronics and assembly, digital electronics and microprocessor engineering, power electronics, control systems and communications engineering. Each area is equipped with the latest experimental equipment appropriate to the corresponding areas of study and research. An additional CAD design suite provides access to computing facilities with specialist electronics CAD tools including OrCAD and PSpice. A specialised area incorporating a spacious radio frequency reverberation chamber and Faraday cage allows for experimentation in radio frequency engineering and electromagnetics, while our digital design suite is equipped with the latest 8 and 32-bit embedded microprocessor platforms together with high-speed programmable logic development environments. Power generation and conversion, industrial process control and embedded drives are provided while our communications laboratory is additionally equipped for RF engineering.

Modules

- Embedded system design
This module shows you how to design and implement an Embedded System on a single IC. You will learn about the basics and the benefits of all programmable devices. The SOC (System on Chip) process flow is explained for FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) stressing the role played by the Hardware Description Languages (HDL). The accompanying workshops demonstrate the use of tools and methodologies as well as the programming, verifying and protecting your designs. We use the commercial software Quartus II and QSYS and the hardware development platform DE2 by Altera.

- Individual project
The individual project is a major element of the course. It involves a wider spectrum of multidisciplinary research in design, manufacturing systems, quality management and IT, with due regard to the efficient exploitation of the technology, materials and marketing resources of industrial firms. Students are encouraged to work on industrial-based projects.

- Pattern recognition and machine learning
This module introduces the fundamentals of both statistical learning theory and practical approaches for solving pattern recognition problems. Further, it consolidates lectures with experimental computer-based workshops to inculcate the principles of machine learning and classification. The module covers: Bayesian decision theory, parametric density estimation, linear discriminant functions, perceptrons, support vector machines, neural networks and clustering.

- Microprocessor-based control and robotics
This module will provide information allowing you to critically evaluate and make the right choice of the microprocessor that will be at the heart of your embedded system. To this effect we provide a thorough discussion and qualitative comparison of the various microprocessor architectures and the methods of the software development available to you. The workshop assignments involve interfacing 8 and 32 bit microcontrollers to a wide range of devices, including robotic manipulators and control/measurement instrumentation.

- Electromechanical systems and manufacturing technology
This module consists of two parts. The first part covers the design of electromechanical components of the embedded system. The material presented here derives from the fields of Mechatronics and Robotics. The second part provides information on modern developments in the field of materials and the manufacturing. Examples of topics covered include applications of nano-technology, use of polymers and composites. Manufacturing techniques are described together with process modelling and control that is essential to produce the material to the required specification.

- Technology evaluation and commercialisation
This module includes: research product idea generation; product definition and value proposition; market research and assessment; functional assessment of product concepts; and strategic assessment of commercial viability.

- Technical, research and professional skills
This module includes: an introduction to project management, project planning, research project characteristics, ethics, feasibility analysis of requirements and resources; research methods; stages in project management; modelling and optimisation tools (PERT and CPM); technical report writing.

- Robotics
This module introduces you to the basic elements and principles of modern robotics. You'll gain a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of the fundamental concepts of this important and fast developing field. Essential geometric concepts will be introduced and these will be applied to the analysis and control of several different types of machines. A key feature of the module will be the wide range of robotic devices studied, from industrial serial manipulators, through mobile robots to quadcopters. The workshop for this modules includes various topics such as Robot Programming, Path Planning, Mapping and Localisation.

- MSc project
The individual project is a major element of the course. We offer a supervision of projects from a wide spectrum of either specialized or multi-disciplinary topics. There are opportunities for individual-centered projects as well for the student being allocated specific tasks within a larger research effort. Students are encouraged to work on industrial-based projects under joint supervision with their employer.

Extending the exposure to major theoretical and methodological approaches to gender studies from a range of disciplines as covered in the one-year MA, students choose the applied track with internship (oriented towards critical approaches to policy and governance) or the research track. This program provides students with a foundation in international relations, as well as exposure to questions relating to the study of international security and the global economy. International relations training is combined with regional expertise in the study of the European Union, East Asia, the Middle East and the post-Soviet space. The program offers an innovative, dynamic learning environment with small class sizes and an interdisciplinary curriculum.

Department of International Relations
