The objective of the course is to equip students with a strong foundation in the fundamental techniques of clinical and translational research in experimental medicine, applying contemporary research tools to clinically relevant areas of investigation. The bespoke experimental medicine research training will be taught by Cambridge academics and industry, and will incorporate a research project focused experimental medicine. Each student is allocated an individual supervisor, who will provide support throughout the course and help build a customised training programme.

The MPhil includes formal modular teaching in core experimental modules (Statistics, Epidemiology, and Practical Aspects of Clinical Research) as well as specialist modules in Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Drug Development. In addition, all students will have the opportunity to undertake a relevant 12 week research projects with one of our outstanding supervisors, including clinicians across a range of specialties, bio-medical scientists and bio-medical industry partners.

Upon successful completion of the MPhil graduates will have developed a strong foundation in the fundamental knowledge and techniques required to enable them to undertake clinical and translational research in experimental medicine. They will be able to apply contemporary research tools to clinically relevant areas of investigation.

The MPhil programme will produce clinical researchers who are competitive in seeking research support and
who are knowledgeable about the complex issues associated with conducting sound clinical research and
trials.

Format

The course consists of core modules in Practical Aspects of Clinical Research, Statistics, Epidemiology, as well as bespoke modules in Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Drug Development timetabled over two terms. Students from both themes (Experimental Medicine and Rare Diseases) will have the opportunity to attend the modules of the other theme.

Students will be allocated mentor groups to work on a group research project; and all students will conduct their own individual supervised 12 week research project for which they will submit a thesis. The course is examined by two sat exams and thesis assessment.

Assessment

Students are expected to submit a thesis with a maximum word count of 15000 words.

Students will sit two exams of 2 hours each. The exams will be multiple choice questions and structured answer questions.

Students are required to present their work to their supervisors lab and a supervisor report is submitted to the programme directors - this is not assessed, but gives an indication of the progress of the student.

The course components are completed by the end of July. However, to complete the course, students will be required to attend a viva in person on a date (to be announced) in late August or early September.

Continuing

Students who are progressing well, have the support of a Principal supervisor, and have the necessary funding, may apply during the year to continue to do a PhD on successful completion of their MPhil. Such students will need to gain a pass mark of 70% or more in the MPhil examination.

The Microelectronics group at the University of Bristol has many collaborative links with multinational companies in the microelectronics industry that have identified a shortfall in graduates with the necessary qualifications and professional skills to work in the sector. This programme has been designed to meet this need.

A range of taught subjects cover core topics such as advanced architectures and system design using FPGA and DSP platforms, before progressing into more specialised areas such as digital and analogue ASIC design, integrated sensors and actuators and mixed-signal design. Changes are made periodically to reflect important emerging disciplines, such as electronics for internet of things, bio-medical applications and neuromorphic computing.

The programme offers you the opportunity to learn from experts in micro- and nanoelectronics and computer science, to allow you to start working straight after your degree or continue your studies via a PhD. The project must have a significant scientific or technical component and may involve on-site collaboration with an industrial partner. The thesis is normally submitted by the end of September.

The programme structure is under continual discussion with the National Microelectronics Institute and our industrial advisory board in order that it remains at the cutting edge of the semiconductor industry. It is therefore subject to small changes on an ongoing basis to generally improve the programme and recognise important emerging disciplines.

This course gives graduating students the background to go on to a career in a variety of disciplines in the IT sector, due to the core and specialist units that cover key foundational concepts as well as advanced topics related to hardware design, programming and embedded systems and system-level integration.

Typical careers are in soft fabrication facilities and design houses in the semiconductor industry, electronic-design automation tool vendors, embedded systems specialists and software houses. The Master of Clinical Practice programme incorporates the Postgraduate Diploma Clinical Practice (Advanced Critical Care Practice) and Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Clinical Skills, and is only available to Trust employees appointed into the role of Advanced Critical Care Practitioner.

The Master of Clinical Practice reflects a unique focus on mastery of clinical (health care practice) theory and skills, and unlike other postgraduate courses it requires an assessment of clinical competence on which the award is contingent. As a result, the breadth of knowledge introduced will be limited when compared to existing MSc or MA courses within postgraduate studies, and focused instead on knowledge that is imperative for clinical practice. For these reasons this links postgraduate study to clinical work.

The course addresses the requirement to provide a Masters award that includes new clinical skills to prepare for a role as a new type of health professional. A substantial part of the course is devoted to the development of specific skills and the remainder accommodates the acquisition of a bio-medical and practice related knowledge base required for the role. For this reason, research and other forms of evidence are integrated within the practitioner specific modules and within clinical practice.

The duration of the Master of Clinical Practice is three years. The Postgraduate Diploma will be full-time over two years. The final (dissertation) year will be undertaken on a part-time basis. The changing nature of healthcare provision has created new roles within critical care units. These developments are in response to variations in recruitment and retention patterns for medical staff, and the impact of the European Working Time Directive. The Advanced Practitioner role is a new non-medical role in critical care. The role is designed to make significant contribution to the care and management of critically ill patients and their families.

Students will engage theory and practice within modules that adopt an integrated approach to teaching and learning in the development of skills and practice knowledge.

However, traditional practice also utilises other techniques such as moxibustion and cupping. The Chinese word for acupuncture is zhenjiu; literally needle and moxibustion. It originated In China around three thousand years ago and soon spread to other countries in Asia such as Japan and Korea. Acupuncture is now widely used around the world.

This course provides a strong foundation in the theory and application of acupuncture, as well as extensive clinical experience and a grounding in Chinese language and culture. Over the four year course, you'll also gain a thorough understanding of western bio-medical sciences and the skills to be a reflective and professional practitioner. Research will play an important role in the future development of the profession of acupuncture and this programme is designed to equip you with excellent research skills.

Modules covering Chinese medicine, language and culture will be taught by experienced lecturers from China. You'll benefit from this wealth of clinical experience and extensive knowledge of the various traditions and historical developments in Chinese medicine. You'll also learn from practitioners based in the UK to gain a more complete picture and understanding of the skills required to be a professional acupuncturist in the West.

With acupuncture becoming increasingly popular in the UK and western countries, there's a growing amount of opportunities available on graduation – whether you want to be an acupuncturist, or go into teaching, research or another side of healthcare. - Role and responsibilities
Acupuncturists spend much of their time working with clients: speaking to them, diagnosing and treating them. Usually working from a clinic, or at a client's home – sometimes on evenings and weekends, acupuncturists tend to be self-employed. This means a good understanding of business and marketing are key skills you would need to develop. A steady hand and empathetic attitude are also important qualities.

The MPhil in Multi-disciplinary Gender Studies provides rigorous advanced training in the multi-disciplinary study of gender. The course is designed for those students who wish to prepare for PhD or further research and also, for those who want to enhance their understanding of 'gender' by undertaking a one-year MPhil only.

The primary objective of the course is to introduce students from a wide variety of academic, business and policy backgrounds to the traditions, methods and front-line research that shape an advanced gender analysis of human society. Over twenty different departments within the University of Cambridge come together on this course to address a range of topics such as Conflict; Globalization; Labour Market Inequality; Public Policy; Culture; Bio-medical advances, Experimental Psychology, Human Rights and Justice, Literature and the Arts, Culture and Antiquity. Graduates from this MPhil will emerge as highly desirable candidates for NGO, governmental, policy, business, and academic careers.

The course aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to:

1. use a range of methods for gathering, analyzing and interpreting research material.
2. apply normative theories to substantive research topics.
3. frame research questions, to construct appropriate research designs, and develop a thorough grasp of a wide range of methodological approaches.
4. interpret complex research publications effectively.
5. independently manage primary research, including data management and the writing up of research as well as understanding codes of research practice and research ethics.
6. research and also to make use of constructive criticism.

Learning Outcomes

The MPhil programme is designed to enable students to conduct independent research in the field of gender studies. The outcomes of the programme are achieved both through focused study of a wide range of selected specialised aspects of gender analysis, and through development of more general research skills and methods that enable the student to produce original, independent work. The course aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to:

1. use a range of methods for gathering, analysing and interpreting research material.
2. apply normative theories to substantive research topics.
3. frame research questions, to construct appropriate research designs, and develop a thorough grasp of a wide range of methodological approaches.
4. interpret complex research publications effectively.
5. independently manage primary research, including data management and the writing up of research as well as understanding codes of research practice and research ethics.

Format

Students will take the following:

1. Theory and Controversy (MGS 1)
2. Research Methodologies (MGS 2)
3. Multi-disciplinary Text Seminar (MGS 3)
4. Multi-disciplinary Gender Research Seminar
5. Multi-disciplinary Speaker Programme
6. Dissertation.

Courses and seminars will run for the first two terms (Michaelmas and Lent). Dissertations are expected to be completed throughout the third term (Easter) and the vacation under guidance from a supervisor.

Students are introduced to a wide range of disciplinary methods and research topics and are encouraged to debate ideas and concepts throughout the course. In addition, students will have the opportunity to interact with world-leading experts in gender theory hosted by the Centre throughout the year through the Diane Middlebrook and Carl Djerassi Visiting Professorship. Group discussion, led by experts, forms the core of the MGS 1 and MGS 3 courses. In addition to the research dissertation, students are required to produce two unsupervised essays of not more than 5000 words. These essays are assessed to examine how well the student has understood the complex debates and theoretical ideas taught in MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3.

Assessment

- 20,000 word dissertation submitted in mid July.
- 2 essays of 5,000 words each submitted at the end of the second term and the beginning of the third term.

Feedback on each submitted essay and the dissertation will be provided.

Continuing

70% overall score in MPhil.
