Course Outline

The programme, which has recently been updated, trains professional statisticians for posts in industry, government, research and teaching. It provides a suitable preparation for careers in other fields requiring a strong statistical background. Core modules give a thorough grounding in modern statistical methods and there is the opportunity to choose additional topics to study.

Format and assessment

You undertake a substantial project in statistics, supervised by an experienced researcher. Some projects are focused on the analysis of particular complex data sets while others are more concerned with generic methodology.

The MSc in Statistics at the University of Leeds is a flexible degree programme enabling students from a wide range of backgrounds to both broaden and deepen their understanding of statistics and maths. It is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society and completion of the programme will qualify students for the status of 'Graduate Statistician'- the first stage towards Chartered Statistician status.

The programme provides training in a range of statistical techniques (and transferable skills) suitable for either careers in statistics and research-related professions, or for further academic research in statistics.

Options within the course vary from mainstream topics in statistical methodology to more specialised areas and reflects specific research interests of academic staff with the department - examples include statistical shape analysis, directional data, statistical genetics and stochastic financial modelling.

The course consists of two semesters of taught modules, with the third semester devoted to a major dissertation. Within each semester there is one compulsory module. However, students tailor the course to meet their individual needs through selection of a further three modules from a variety of options. This selection means a student can specialise in biological or financial applications of statistics or retain a broad base of statistical expertise.

Specific interests are in biometry, cluster analysis, stochastic population processes, analysis of discrete data, analysis of quantal assay data, overdispersion, and we enjoy good links within the University, including the School of Biosciences and the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology. A recent major joint research project involves modelling the behaviour of yeast prions and builds upon previous work in this area. We also work in collaboration with many external institutions.

Bayesian statistics
Current work includes non-parametric Bayes, inference robustness, modelling with non-normal distributions, model uncertainty, variable selection and functional data analysis.
Bioinformatics, statistical genetics and medical statistics
Research covers bioinformatics (eg DNA microarray data), involving collaboration with the School of Biosciences. Other interests include population genetics, clinical trials and survival analysis.

Nonparametric statistics
Research focuses on empirical likelihood, high-dimensional data analysis, nonlinear dynamic analysis, semi-parametric modelling, survival analysis, risk insurance, functional data analysis, spatial data analysis, longitudinal data analysis, feature selection and wavelets.

Emma Paton, Graduated in 2012

Emma is currently a sub-editor and digital reporter at Sky Sports News HQ. Emma recently presented ‘behind the scenes’ coverage on one of SSN’s busiest dates - Transfer Deadline Day. Her role as a sub-editor sees her help produce Good Morning Sports Fans - the 6-10am slot on SSN.

During her MA she did various work placements including an internship on the news desk at the British Olympic Association during London 2012 – which St Mary’s put her forward for.

On finishing her Masters, Emma's first and only interview was at Sky Sports News – where she started as an online journalist for skysports.com and later moved to production.

Course Content

We select between 15 and 20 students each year who will embark on a demanding training course taught by professional journalists, broadcasters and academics. In addition to developing essential journalism skills such as fast, accurate and engaging writing, research and interviewing, we also offer training in how to use digital media.

Our curriculum also reflects the high expectations of the profession. You will therefore sit exams set by the National Council for Training Journalists in Reporting, Media Law, Public Affairs, Shorthand, Court Reporting and Sports Journalism. We pay for all you NCTJ exams (excluding resits).

We will also develop your knowledge and understanding of key ethical concerns such as impartiality, truth and accuracy as well as debate critical issues such as the regulation of the press, privacy, freedom of information and the impact of social media.

In addition to your work placements and regular contributions to our online sports magazine, the MA programme includes the following taught modules:

Work Placements

Between September and May, the course is normally taught over four consecutive days, usually Tuesday to Friday, leaving three days a week and evenings for work experience and placements. In the summer, the students devote even more time to work experience.

This is an essential part of our training programme. We work with each students to find them their most suitable work placements as well as encouraging them to freelance for various publications. We do this as soon as a student accepts a place on the course.

Our students take full advantage of our extensive contacts in the industry. We already have a very good working relationship with a number of news organisations, broadcasters and publishers including Sky Sports News, Haymarket (who publish FourFourTwo), IMG media, and goal.com.

Sportsbeat, our training partners, will offer our trainees opportunities to write stories, produce match reports and carry out interviews for all their major publications, which usually includes the RBS Six Nations website, The League Paper, the Non-League Paper, The Rugby Paper, and The Cricket Paper.

In the last two years our students have secured work experience on The Daily Mail, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Times, The Richmond and Twickenham Times and other Newsquest titles, the Press Association, The Birmingham Mail and other Trinity Mirror titles, Sky Sports, the BBC, and RTE in Ireland.

Our students have also worked on the following magazines, Four Four Two, Shoot, TennisHead, FHM, and Sportsister.

Key features of MA in Sports Ethics and Integrity

The world of sport is increasingly beset by ethical problems, from corruption and match fixing to doping and illegal betting. College of Engineering offers an MA in Sports Ethics and Integrity.

The integrity of sporting bodies and organisations at every level is being brought into question, creating an urgent need to develop a coherent, professional response to these issues.

Our response is to establish sports ethics and integrity as a new, internationally recognised profession within the field of sports administration and governance in both public and private sectors; to develop 100 new postgraduate experts between 2016-21, selected from around the world who will enrich sport federations with their expertise in ethics and integrity and revolutionise the world of sport. This may be one of the few chances to respond effectively and rapidly to the global crisis in sport integrity.

‌‌‌The MA Sports Ethics and Integrity will focus on:

- Global sports governance (e.g. FIFA, IOC)
- Anti-doping and drugs education
- Privacy and data protection issues
- Fair Play, justice and human rights
- Youth Olympics, ethics and education
- Equity, diversity and inclusion (especially age and disability issues)
- Illegal and irregular gambling
- Match-fixing and sport manipulation
- Legislation and codes of conduct
- Equality and anti-discrimination (class, race, ethnicity, religion and gender issues)
- Child protection and children’s rights
- Olympism, peace, and The Olympic Truce

Course description

The MA Sports Ethics and Integrity will equip students for high-level careers in sports administration and governance, with a focus on ethical sports, integrity and compliance. Students will receive training that enables them to identify ethical issues, engage in moral thinking, and translate decisions into moral actions – the three core skills required to develop sports integrity.

The MA Sports Ethics and Integrity will support students in developing an ethical mind-set and transferable skills that are indispensable for addressing the value and integrity issues facing national and international sporting federations, national Olympic Committees, and Paralympic Committees with a focus on:

Year 1

- Ethical theory, sports and integrity
- Anti-doping: ethics, policy and practice
- Sport integrity, corruption and gambling
- Ability, disability and athlete integrity
- Sport vales, fair play and integrity
- Summer School at the International Olympic Academy - Greece

Year 2

- Olympism and the Olympic Movement
- Research methods and skills
- Governance, law and sport integrity
- Sports, management and integrity
- Student Dissertation
- Summer School at the International Olympic Academy, Greece

The MA Sports Ethics and Integrity graduates will benefit from opportunities to undertake practical placements within the partner’s extensive network of advisory bodies, federations, policy-makers and commercial organisations, as well as from extensive international collaboration and training opportunities.

Swansea has pioneered globally the ethics of sports as an area of applied research and consultancy in elite sport.
- Charles University in Prague, founded in 1348, is the oldest University in Central Europe, and is consistently ranked first among the Universities of Central and Eastern Europe.
- Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, founded in 1477, is one of the top research universities in Germany of national and international recognition. It is a founding partner of the groundbreaking Executive Master in European Sports Governance.
-KU Leuven, founded in 1425, is one of the oldest Universities in the world, and ranks among the world’s top 100 Universities. It is a leading centre of international excellence in disability and Paralympic sport.
- The University of the Peloponnese is the most recently founded of Greek Universities, and draws on extensive links with the International Olympic Academy and the Olympic Movement. It hosts summer schools on Olympic Studies at its Ancient Olympia campus, adjacent to the archaeological site of the Ancient Olympic Games
