The MA in Irish Studies at Queen’s provides students with an unrivalled opportunity to examine Ireland in its global contexts. With options from Literature, History, Politics, Archaeology, Anthropology, and Sociology the MA allows students to pursue challenging cross-disciplinary themes such as heritage and identities, language and arts, peace and conflict, reflecting the rich cultural legacy of Ireland at home and across the world. Students will explore the possibilities and opportunities in inter-disciplinary work in one of the world’s leading centres of Irish Studies research. Our new core interdisciplinary module on ‘Belfast: Place, Identity and Memory in a Contested City' introduces students to debates in Irish Studies through the case study of Belfast in its historical, cultural, political and social aspects. We will guide students in choosing Irish-related options to meet their particular interests and provide appropriate research training to undertake a research dissertation on their chosen subject.

Course Details

The MA is arranged into thematically-focused groups of modules to include culture, art and literature, political identity, conflict, politics and human rights. Students will take a number of compulsory and optional modules. One of the modules in the first semester must be a research methods course.

Some options may require that particular methods courses be taken or the student to have a particular academic background. The dissertation may be supervised by Institute staff or, subject to the agreement of the Head of School, by members of co-operating academic departments.

A wide variety of modules is available, arranged in thematic and conceptual groups. Current thematic areas include:

Assessment and Feedback

Taught modules are assessed by a combination of examinations, written language assignments and creative practice. Students who have reached a pass in these will submit a dissertation (not exceeding 15,000 words) or a practice as research project, which will include a critical reflection of approximately 3,500 words.

Behaviour analysis has been recognised as the basis for medically necessary intervention and educational provision for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. With the growing prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (now estimated to be 1:68) behaviour analysis has experienced a significant rise in popularity.

There are over 13,000 Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs) worldwide and this number is predicted to rise given that professional approval is seen as the key to delivering high quality services to individuals, families, in schools and in related settings. Furthermore, behaviour analysis is increasingly being applied to general education, special education and organisational leadership settings.

This programme is a highly interactive blended learning programme (mostly online with some face to face workshops) providing professionals from a wide range of backgrounds with scientifically validated expertise that is applicable to mainstream and special needs education, inclusion, curriculum, learning, and pedagogy. It should be of interest to professionals wishing to become Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA®), to those in the ‘helping’ professions (e.g. teachers, speech/language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists) and students preparing for PhD studies.

Please note that unfortunately this course is not eligible for a Tier 4 visa.

There are two different degrees available in Violence, Terrorism and Security - MA and PgDip.

The Post-Graduate Diploma (PgDip) consists of all the above six core taught modules/classes, but students do not complete an MA dissertation. The PgDip is a credit-bearing and internationally recognised post-graduate degree, but it is not the equivalent to a Master’s degree. It is both an entry and exit route.

The Master’s degree (MA) in Violence, Terrorism and Security is awarded to students who successfully complete six core taught modules/classes and the MA dissertation.

Moving from a PgDip to an MA: Students who are registered on the PgDip are invited to register and complete the MA upon successful completion of the six core taught modules/classes. 

Assessment and Feedback

Assessment and Feedback are continuous throughout the course of study. 

Students are provided a range of assessment approaches, both formal and informal as well as formative and summative, in order to enhance the student learning experience and improve student attainment. Each module typically consists of two or three main pieces of assessment and can include essays, policy reports, simulations, presentations, among other forms of assessment.

Feedback is provided throughout the VTS programme for continuous student reflection and growth. Teachers provide thorough and systematic feedback on assessed work. Feedback is also available from your personal tutor as well as via various support mechanisms and training courses in the university, such as via the Student Guidance Centre.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching hours take place in morning/afternoon/night.

  • Each module usually consists of 2-4 contact teaching hours per week, depending on the module. Most study, however, consists of independent research and reading. Each student is also allocated a personal tutor/academic advisor who, alongside teaching in each module, aids in the learning process.
  • Modules involve a variety of teaching approaches designed to inspire critical and transferable skills.
  • Learn with award winning teachers. Teachers in the MA VTS programme are leading experts in their field. Many have been granted teaching awards for their innovative and engaging pedagogical approaches.
  • There are multiple talks, events, and extra-curricular activities and training courses on campus each year, outside of the formal VTS programme, that are related to Violence, Terrorism and Security.

The second term includes a residential Spring School in Dublin. For the remainder of the programme, including the summer dissertation period, April-September students may be based in either Belfast or Dublin depending on their research interests. A one term (twelve week) programme is available and is ideal for those on sabbatical, or for those who prefer a shorter period of study.
Course Description:
This innovative cross-border programme allows M.Phil. students to take a broader joint course Master in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation, or a specialist option for either a Master in Conflict Resolution or a Master in Reconciliation Studies. The Conflict Resolution specialism develops skills in conflict analysis and conflict intervention for both established practitioners and those seeking to develop new expertise in conflict management, conflict resolution and conflict transformation. The Reconciliation specialism offers an inter-disciplinary approach to the challenges of social reconciliation in the aftermath of political conflict, drawing on social research, politics, theology and ethics. Particular attention is given to ethnic conflicts, and the role of religion in such conflicts and in peacebuilding and reconciliation. Case studies typically include: Northern Ireland; South Africa; Zimbabwe; Rwanda; El Salvador; Guatemala; Israel/Palestine; and Sri Lanka. The programme equips graduates for work with local and international organisations, and provides transferable skills for a wide variety of careers, including mediation, diplomacy, policy, advocacy, journalism, teaching and Ph.D. research.

Students are required to take a 10 ECTS core module in Research Skills, a further 50 ECTS of taught modules, and a 30 ECTS research dissertation. In the Conflict Resolution specialism, students are required to take the core module, Conflict Analysis and Models of Intervention. In the Reconciliation specialism, students are required to take the core module, Dynamics of Reconciliation. Optional modules worth 10 ECTS include: Conflict Resolution Skills, Conflict Transformation, Conflict Resolution Lessons from Comparative Peace Processes, Social Research for Transformation, Reconciliation in Northern Ireland, Theology of Reconciliation, Community Learning and Reflective Practice in Northern Ireland, and Post-Conflict Justice and Truth Commissions. Optional modules worth 5 ECTS include: Guided Research Project and South Africa: The Ethics of Truth and Reconciliation. Modules are generally assessed on written work of 3,000-5,000 words, to be submitted according to the internal deadlines distributed at the beginning of each academic year, with final submission date by 1 May. Subject to satisfactory performance in the written work, students may proceed to the submission of the dissertation. Students who do not reach that standard, but who nonetheless are judged by the Court of Examiners to have reached a satisfactory level of performance, may be recommended for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma, without further assessment. The MA Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies is delivered at the York Street Campus in Belfast to both full and part-time students.

Your Course Director is Elizabeth Crooke, Professor of Heritage and Museum Studies at Ulster University. Elizabeth works with a team of expert and experienced tutors to deliver this programme. In September 2015 Elizabeth was elected Chairperson of Board of Directors Northern Ireland Museums Council. Elizabeth is currently a member of the Museum Standards Programme Advisory Committee of the Heritage Council (Ireland) and member of the Board of Directors Irish Museums Association.

Attendance

This course is taught on the Belfast campus.

Full-time students attend lectures and seminars two days a week (typically Tuesday and Thursday) and Part-time students one day a week (typically a Thursday in the first year and a Tuesday in the second year).

Work placement / study abroad

We support all students in finding a work placement, which they complete alongside their studies.Students have had placements at National Museums Northern Ireland, local museums, Linen Hall Library, PRONI and the National Trust.

At the Belfast School of Art we strive to develop unique photographic voices, which sit firmly at the cutting-edge of a contemporary international context, while also mining the specifics of our unique geographical and cultural position.

We have been profiled by the British Journal of Photography as one of the most significant photography schools in Europe. Our graduates work internationally between the book, gallery, web and magazine, continually challenging photography’s place within contemporary society and the way we photograph now.

The teaching team is comprised of contemporary practising photographers, writers and thinkers who exhibit and publish internationally. These are Professor Paul Seawright, Ailbhe Greaney, Dr KayLynn Deveney, Ken Grant, Peter Neill and Clare Gallagher as well as two members of the prestigious Magnum agency, Martin Parr and Donovan Wylie. We have a progamme of Guest Lecturers, recently including Hannah Starkey, Liz Wells, and Louise Clements. Throughout the programme students develop an awareness of photography as it exists in a culture of evolving technologies. They are challenged to rethink their practice both visually, theoretically and contextually. Our close links with photographic galleries and photography festivals helps students to build networks and professional practice. The MFA Photography has an international reputation and is available for study on campus in Belfast (Thursday delivery) and fully online (eLearning) for students living and working outside Ireland. A Master of Fine Arts degree is a creative degree, which centers around practice in a particular field, in this case Photography. The qualification provides students with a high level of specialisation and allows graduates to teach at University level.

The MFA Photography degree exposes students to key critical debates in photography and offers a dynamic environment in which to develop a major body of photographic work for exhibition and publication. Staff are leaders in the field of photography. Internationally recognised photographers, artists and researchers regularly review student projects, give lectures and critique photographic work.

All the core teaching takes place on Thursdays and you should expect to be on campus from 10am - 7pm. During this time you will engage in one-to-one tutorials, a lecture programme delivered by staff and visiting guest speakers, group seminars, group critiques and technical workshops. The rest of the week is spent attending optional tutorials/workshops and engaging in independent study.

The primary assessment method is the evaluation of photographic work in progress. Students work over the duration of the course on a major body of work that is subjected to regular and rigorous critique by staff and internationally renowned visiting photographers. Other assessment methods are visual presentations, seminar presentations, essays and a final year dissertation. There is an interim exhibition which is assessed at the end of the first year, usually in a public gallery.

Work placement / study abroad

The programme is complemented by a series of master classes and advanced skill workshops; an annual field trip to Paris and regular site visits to a variety of cultural institutions such as museums and galleries in Ireland, the UK and Europe.

Assessment and Feedback

Assessment and Feedback are continuous throughout the course of study. 

Students are provided a range of assessment approaches, both formal and informal as well as formative and summative, in order to enhance the student learning experience and improve student attainment. Each module typically consists of two or three main pieces of assessment and can include essays, policy reports, simulations, presentations, among other forms of assessment.

Feedback is provided throughout the VTS programme for continuous student reflection and growth. Teachers provide thorough and systematic feedback on assessed work. Feedback is also available from your personal tutor as well as via various support mechanisms and training courses in the university, such as via the Student Guidance Centre.

The MA in VTS provides you with the essential transferable skills and in-depth knowledge of theories and issues in the areas of violence, security and terrorism for career development at any stage, from students straight from an undergraduate degree with limited to no prior professional experience to those seeking continued professional development. The programme enables you to broaden your horizons providing you with a competitive edge in a global graduate market in a wide variety of areas such as the security sector, including intelligence agencies, government agencies and public office, the military, NGOs, academia, businesses and corporations, and the media among many other possibilities.

Aim

This programme is designed as a specialised extension to the study of electronics at undergraduate level. The programme provides students with specialist expertise across a wide range of electronic subjects including microelectronics, hardware design, communications, computer design and digital hardware. The programme is normally full-time, starts at the end of September and lasts for 12 months. Electronics with Professional Internship students have the opportunity to complete an industrial placement of up to six months as part of their studies.

Our MSc in Applied Cyber Security aims to develop the next generation of industry leaders and address the shortage of cyber security professionals globally. The emphasis of the MSc is to provide graduates with a comprehensive understanding of the cyber security challenges facing industry and society, today and in the future, and equipping them with the skills necessary to address those challenges.

This taught programme provides a strong foundational education in the core areas of cyber security and offers practical training in key software tools and programs. Applied practical skills will be developed further in specialised projects exploring leading edge issues in cyber security research.

The MSc offers students a syllabus informed by the world-class research in the areas of data, network, media and physical security, being undertaken at Queen's University Belfast's Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT).

CSIT is a GCHQ accredited Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research and is the UK's largest university research lab in this field. The MSc in Cyber Security is available in two options, lasting either 1 or 2 years:

COURSE STRUCTURE

Introduction

Animal Behaviour is the scientific study of what animals do, from single-celled organisms, invertebrates to vertebrates. It is one of the most exciting and interesting scientific disciplines, expanding rapidly over recent decades. Animal behaviour is key to understanding evolutionary processes, and there is a growing need to understand behaviour due to the impact of an increasing human population.

In addition, an understanding of animal behaviour is of fundamental importance to safeguard animal welfare. Thus, the study of animal behaviour provides the foundation for successful conservation and to increase and regulate the welfare of both domestic and wild animals. The course covers a wide range of animals, from insects to primates, taking in companion and farm animals. Thus, there is something of interest for everyone.

Throughout the course students will get fundamental training in Animal Behaviour, Animal Welfare, Experimental Design, Statistics, and Presentation Skills to succeed on the competitive job market. The content provided during the course will also be useful for those who wish to pursue a PhD in Behaviour, Behavioural Ecology, Conservation, Evolutionary Ecology, and Animal Welfare.

The course also offers the opportunity to undertake a work placement with a variety of organizations subject to availability of placements. The School of Biological Sciences has provided work placement opportunities to students for more than 10 years, through a dedicated team of Career and Work Placement Officers that work for our School.

The work placement module is optional: students will have the option to either complete the module Professional Development and Work Placement, or the module Research Project: Animal Behaviour and Welfare. 

The structure and contents of the programme are detailed below:

  • Animal Behaviour and Welfare (60 CATS). This module gives an in depth overview into different topics of Behaviour and Welfare, including Communication; Companion, Farm and Zoo Welfare; Conservation, Contests; Development; Hunting; Navigation; Sensory Systems; and Veterinary Welfare Issues.
  • Foundations for Research in the Biosciences (20 CATS). This module will provide you with the underpinning of research such as the scientific method, ethics in research, scientific communication, and impact of your research.
  • Key Skills in Animal Behaviour and Welfare (20 CATS). This module will introduce you to the principles, which will allow you to conduct animal behaviour and welfare research successfully. This module will improve your skills in terms of study design and statistical analysis and it will also improve your oral and written presentation skills.
  • Literature Review: Animal Behaviour (20 CATS). You will write an in-depth quality review in an area of Behaviour or Welfare to improve your writing skills.

One of the following:

  • Research Project: Animal Behaviour and Welfare (60 CATS). Projects run usually from April to August (inclusive) and allows a substantial piece of research to be produced and written in good publishable style.
  • Professional Development and Work Placement (60 CATS). Work placement usually take place from April until the end of August, and are undertaken in an organisation chosen among industry, the public sector and on governmental organizations in the area of animal behaviour and welfare. During the work placement, you will increase your ability to relate academic theory to the work environment, develop identified work related skills (cognitive, transferable and subject specific skills), enhance your career knowledge, be able to critically evaluate your learning from the placement to demonstrate its value to your future.

Programme Structure and Modules

Core Modules (all 20 CATS points):

An Introduction to Research Methods: Children, Young People and Education (compulsory)

This module will provide you with an understanding of differing perspectives that underpin quantitative and qualitative methodologies and is required preparation for your dissertation.

Leadership for Change (compulsory)

You will develop theoretical and practical knowledge of change in complex educational environments. Topics covered include: the nature and types of change; the process of organisational change covering phases from inception to institutionalisation; factors affecting the success of change at different levels; creativity and change; resistance to change; and the subtle ways in which culture influences the implementation of reform. Attention is paid to the role of different stakeholders in the school change process and on developing constructive dialogue for change by shifting the focus from the identification of problems to exploring possibilities.

Leadership Theory and Practice: an Overview (compulsory)

This compulsory module introduces leadership and organisational theories as they pertain to education. You are expected to develop understanding of the complex nature of leadership in educational institutions and appreciate the idea that ‘good leadership’ is always contingent upon the situation and context. Leadership practice is examined through different thematic lenses such as: human motivation theories; social systems theory; the concept of emotional intelligence; organisational culture and politics; partnership and collaboration; as well as equity and ethics.

School Effectiveness and School Improvement (compulsory)

We will examine current debates on what constitutes an effective school, the factors affecting school outcomes, and the implications for those assuming leadership roles. Attention is paid to the impact of inter- and intra-school collaboration on educational outcomes and the challenges posed by existing competitive structures internationally. You will learn how to use data critically in measuring school effectiveness and planning for improvement. We will look into how such data can be used to challenge inequities and promote a socially just education.

Two optional modules may be chosen from the Educational Studies (MEd) programme.

Assessment

There are no written examinations. Modules are assessed by coursework, which includes written assignments and group presentation projects.

This Professional Doctorate (EdD) is a partly taught and partly research-based Professional Doctorate which has proved to be both successful and convenient for senior professionals in education and related fields. We offer a wide range of taught modules in the areas of research methods, education policy, education management, TESOL and professional development.

On successful completion, students will have made an original and independent contribution to educational knowledge in the field determined by the topic of their research dissertation study. They will demonstrate a critical evaluation of the relevant literature, a high level of competence in appropriate research methods, and the ability to communicate the results and their implications.

We undertake a wide range of research that falls within two broad themes: pedagogy, learning and curriculum; and human rights, equality and social cohesion in education. Underpinning all of our research is a commitment to achieving a real impact in the lives of educators and learners.

Aims

On successful completion of the programme students will have made an original and independent contribution to educational knowledge in the field determined by the topic of their research dissertation study. They will, through this dissertation, demonstrate a critical evaluation of the relevant literature, a high level of competence in appropriate research methods, and the ability to communicate their results and their implications.

The EdD programme may be taken on a part-time or full-time basis. The normal period of study will be not less that three years full-time or not less than four years part-time. The aim is to allow flexibility for busy professionals, enabling you to complete the degree with minimal disruption to your professional and personal life.

The EdD comprises nine taught doctoral modules (of which four must be research modules) and a research dissertation. The research dissertation has the same level of challenge and high standards as a PhD but is approximately half the scale (40,000 words). Each module is assessed by one 5000 word assignment. The University operates a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Scheme which recognises relevant prior assessed and certified learning for credit purposes. This is also known as credit transfer where the credits were awarded by another Higher Education (HE) provider. Applicants who have completed a masters degree within the last 10 years that involved a substantive element of educational research methods training, including a research-based dissertation or project, may be eligible to transfer credit. Applicants for RPL should submit the RPL Application Form to the Postgraduate Administrator, 20 College Green, Belfast, BT7 1LN. Applications for RPL should be made at the same time as your online course application. The dissertation is assessed by an oral examination (a viva-voce).

There are three stages to each EdD taught module which covers a four month period. The first stage is pre-reading. The second stage is attendance for the intensive teaching, normally over a consecutive period of two and a half days. The third stage involves the completion and submission of an assignment, normally within three months of the last date of the taught module.

Belfast is a modern vibrant city offering a great base from which to study a Masters in Public Health. On this MPH programme there is an emphasis on global aspects of public health and emerging threats and challenges and the course attracts students from all over the World. The course equips students with the knowledge and skills base to pursue a career in public health or other health-related leadership roles

One of our strengths is the small class size (typically less than 20 students per year) which enables very close liaison between students and the world class research staff who will be teaching and mentoring students. The emphasis is on learning and transferable skills rather than teaching.

Course Structure

The course is divided into two taught semesters and one research-based component. In the first semester students will be taught by experts in the fields of demography, epidemiology, health economics, medical sociology, health services research, medical statistics and qualitative methods, needs assessment and health impact assessment. There will be an emphasis on critical thinking and of the application of new knowledge.

The second semester focuses on the more applied aspects of public health and this part of the course includes the theory and practice of health promotion; protection of health through control of communicable diseases and environmental hazards and emergency preparedness. The funding, organisation and assessment of health and care systems across the world will also be addressed.

The dissertation makes up the final third of the course. Here students will have an opportunity to undertake substantive research in a public health area of choice and to write and present these findings in a standard format. Students who do not complete the dissertation are eligible for a Diploma in Public Health.
