Changing human behaviour is at the heart of solving global problems central to wellbeing, social cohesion and environmental sustainability. Government and public bodies, charities and companies routinely seek to integrate behaviour change within their policies and practices. This cross-disciplinary programme will train a new generation to work in this emerging field.

About this degree

This cross-disciplinary MSc programme will:

  • equip students with the ability to critically appraise theories, methods and evidence for understanding behaviour and behaviour change in a range of contexts.
  • train students in the design, implementation and evaluation of behaviour change interventions.
  • enable students to support the translation of evidence into practice across disciplines and sectors.

MSc students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The MSc programme consists of four core modules (75 credits), three elective modules (45 credits) and a research-based dissertation (60 credits).

Dissertation/research project

MSc students undertake an independent research project, culminating in a dissertation of 8,000-10,000 words. Projects will also be presented at a mini-conference. 

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, small-group and project work and independent study. All tutors are highly experienced, internationally recognised researchers and/or practitioners in behaviour change from a range of disciplines, including: health, transport, built environment, digital technology, policy and ethics. Assessment is through coursework, unseen examinations and research projects. Although not formally offered, we can support students to find and complete a work experience placement as part of their programme.

Students graduating from this programme will be equipped with a broad set of skills that can be applied to many different careers. Market research has shown there is a large demand for behaviour change expertise across the private, public and voluntary sectors and in roles relating to policy, practice and research.

If you’re a professional wishing to underpin your work with theory and practical ways forward, or a graduate wishing to specialise in behaviour change or add social science to your skill set, this course is for you.

Our MSc Behaviour Change is the first masters course of its kind. The course will provide you with psychological theories and models so that you can develop a greater understanding of human behaviour and behaviour change. You’ll acquire the knowledge and transferable skills required to critically evaluate and design interventions that provide opportunities for people to change in a variety of practical contexts.

You’ll be taught by an enthusiastic and experienced team of research-active psychologists and ergonomists. We share a passion for promoting applied evidence-based science relevant to the understanding and promotion of behaviour change.

We offer three pathways to a masters award in Behaviour Change:
MSc Behaviour Change (Health and Wellbeing)
MSc Behaviour Change (Occupational Health and Safety)
MSc Behaviour Change (Ergonomics and Human Factors)

You’ll study one module per term (three modules per year). You can do either the full MSc in your chosen pathway over three years, or take a step off award after one year (Postgraduate Certificate) or after two years (Postgraduate Diploma in your chosen pathway).
Although the three pathways share several modules, they are distinctive and tailored to the specific needs of students on each specific pathway. For all module coursework, you’re encouraged to focus on specific contexts that matter to you and your practical experience. The burden of chronic disease in our society is growing, and innovative methods and highly trained individuals are needed to successfully tackle the problem from all sides. This vocational degree provides students with the opportunity to enhance their skills, knowledge and understanding of facilitating, managing and supporting behaviour change at individual, group and population levels.

There is a need, in a range of public health settings, such as clinical, healthcare, social care or public health departments for highly skilled, autonomous and analytical employees specialising in the prevention, assessment and management of chronic diseases.

The MSc in Chronic Disease Management at St Mary’s University is rooted in developing your skills at promoting and supporting behaviour change, expanding your research expertise, equipping you to obtain a Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework Passport, and enhancing your ability to tackle chronic disease in individuals and through public bodies. Course Content

The course has three possible exit points. Successfully completing 60 credits worth of modules gains the Postgraduate Certificate. Successfully completing 120 credits, gains the Postgraduate Diploma and the full Masters is awarded on successful completion of 180 credits, comprising six taught modules plus a 13,000 word dissertation of the requisite quality. The teaching will be delivered using a combination of a few intensive week-long blocks spread throughout the year and blended learning involving bi-monthly on-site teaching and on-line seminars and discussion. There will be a time-commitment for 8 mid-week sessions per semester and 4 of these will require on-site attendance. Students will participate in regular on-line discussion throughout the course. An additional 15 day commitment is required for completion of the embedded work placement. A number of different work formats are available for the work placement and students working in relevant areas may be able to complete this in their current workplace. Assessment is by on-line discussion, essays, case studies, reflective accounts, presentations, practical assessment, evaluative report and research dissertation.

Career Prospects

Integral to all parts of the course is the development of skills and competencies in areas highlighted as a priority by Public Health England. This will include preventative approaches and tackling emerging conditions early, engaging hard to reach groups in the prevention and management of chronic disease, including males, ethnic minorities, pregnant women, the elderly and those from low socio-economic groups. They will be informed by the competencies put forward in the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework at Level 7. The course will include a work-based learning component whereby students are involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of a particular project and this will place graduates in a favourable position to climb the career ladder in organisations with a chronic disease focus.

The Social Marketing postgraduate certificate will develop your ability to:

Course structure

The course is designed to fit around your personal and professional commitments, with start dates throughout the year. You may determine the length of the course, which can vary between six months and four years, depending on your individual circumstances.

You take a Social Marketing module over four consecutive days, with additional supervision and assessment time. On completion of this module you can choose to follow one of two routes:

• the modules route
• the work-based route.

You will have the opportunity to discuss the best combination of modules and projects with your tutor.

You need 60 credits to achieve the Social Marketing PGCert. The compulsory Social Marketing module is worth 20 credits; you can earn the other 40 credits either through two 20-credit modules or a work-based project.

You can take modules one at a time. For example, you could pay for one 20-credit module, then pay for another one at a later date until you have earned the 60 credits necessary for the PGCert award.

1. Modules route

This route allows you to choose two modules in addition to the compulsory Social Marketing module.

Each module is taught in weekly blocks, not including supervision and assessment time.

2. Work-based project route

Should you decide to take this route, you will be required to produce a coherent account of an applied social marketing initiative.

The project provides an opportunity to create strategies to overcome the barriers that social marketing professionals face when creating complex behaviour change programmes.

You will be expected to:

• identify a social marketing problem of your choice (in consultation with tutors)
• explore relevant social marketing/behaviour change models to provide insight into an audience in relation to the particular issue
• analyse the primary and secondary data, with reference to social marketing theory and literature
• draw sound conclusions from your investigation
• identify realistic and feasible social marketing recommendations, such as the development of a behavioural intervention or a review of the way a public service is provided.

  • A sound understanding of the underlying concepts and principles associated with Behaviour Analysis, and of the applications of these concepts and principles
  • A knowledge of the research skills required for Behaviour Analysis, including the ability to read, interpret and appraise published behavioural research critically, and the ability to conduct fundamental and, where appropriate, applied research in Behaviour Analysis
  • An understanding of functional analyses of problem behaviour and of how to develop an appropriate programme for behaviour change in their area of speciality

Depending on your specialty, you may work in a range of settings (including research institutions, private practice, schools, special education settings, universities, health services, business and industry, governmental agencies and zoos), and with a range of populations (including families, people with psychological problems, children with challenging behaviours, individuals with special needs, teachers, people and their pets, agricultural species and any others seeking positive behaviour change).

Students who specialised in the application of Behaviour Analysis to human behaviour are working in the community, in mental health, and in educational settings and with a wide range of individuals.

However, it doesn’t matter what type of psychology you choose to practice, or whether you end up in a field orientated to people or animals. What is important is that you gain an understanding of how and why organisms behave (i.e., what maintains and/or influences behaviour) whether it be private or public.

Industry Experience

Many students intending careers involving application of behaviour analysis (for example, those who intend to work with families, children or with people with an intellectual disability) gain practical experience alongside their graduate studies.

This can be voluntary work or paid work as a support worker. In addition, sometimes experience can be gained though working for parents or trusts who employ students specialising in applied behaviour analysis to work with their children, helping to implement programmes for them.

The MAppPsy(BA) programme includes training in the skills required to work practically applying behaviour analytic principles to behaviour change.

Overview

Bridging the gap between medicine and psychology, the course focuses on understanding the behavioural processes around health and sickness. This programme will allow students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for research and practice as a Health Psychologist. The programme covers a wide-range of approaches, from advanced research methods, through to a working and evidence-based knowledge of theory and behaviour change interventions.

Much like our undergraduate programme, this course will adopt a personalised teaching style built on creating relationships between students and staff. All modules use a tutorial style of teaching, in which students are taught weekly in groups of 7 or fewer, allowing for regular quality contact time with your lecturer. It is through this method that students can achieve excellence in their qualification in a supportive environment. 

 Over the course of the programme, you will develop a strong knowledge base and skill-set appropriate for professional practice in Health Psychology. You’ll learn to analyse, debate, discuss and devise behaviour change interventions for use in primary, secondary and community care. We encourage autonomy in design and analysis of research, allowing you to develop your skills towards becoming an independent researcher, with an increased awareness of the practical reality of working with short- and long-term health conditions.

 This is a one year, full-time programme accepting students in both September and January. Alongside the taught modules, there will be opportunities for you to gain practical work experience from our collaborations with Milton Keynes, Stoke Mandeville and Northampton General Hospitals. - Challenging Behaviour
This module explores challenging behaviour from a variety of perspectives and provides you with an overview of individual and contextual factors which may influence children and young people's behaviour. During seminar workshops you will discuss theoretical perspectives in relation to problematising children and young people's social, emotional and mental health. Particular attention will be paid to 'causes' of challenging behaviour, individual and whole school approaches to managing behaviour and the importance of recognising pupil voice and increasing pupil participation. You will determine the content of the sessions by focusing on the inquiries selected by both yourself and others, adopting a 'learning set' approach. Group seminars and workshops will provide a structured introduction to action research followed by the development of small working groups to support the stages of individual projects and provide peer group support. Your tutor will signpost you to relevant academic theory and research and support material from the MA in Education online resources.

Teaching and learning

The first module, 'Challenging Behaviour', requires regular evening attendance (seven evening sessions) in the Autumn and this is followed by a double action research module in which you will complete a research project in your own school based on work with children / young people with behaviour difficulties.

This research project will be supported by six workshops between January and June, and individual tutorial support based around your particular project.

You’ll cover the whole spectrum of psychological research skills and most research methods used by psychologists, and have the opportunity to study methods that are particularly relevant to you. We aim to equip you with high-level research skills and give you the opportunity to apply these skills in original psychological research. Early in the programme, you’ll begin a substantial independent piece of research and continue this throughout the year. Special emphasis is placed on practical research skills and communication - these are integrated in project work to achieve professional standards of psychological research. Why Study Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation with us?

The prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a cost-effective means of managing the leading cause of death in the UK and in many parts of the developed world.

The MSc is delivered by a team of experienced academics and leading specialist front-line lead practitioners, enabling graduates to leave with the most up-to-date level of knowledge. The aims of our course are for you to develop:
- a critical understanding of cardiovascular health and rehabilitation concepts
- a scientific and enquiring approach to the study of physiological, psychological, social and healthcare management components for managing people with and/or those at higher risk of CVD.

Our course is designed to provide a thorough understanding of cardiovascular health and the process of rehabilitation. Cardiovascular anatomy and physiology is covered in detail, with application to exercise and the practicalities of working with a patient with CVD.

Health Psychology improves wellbeing by applying psychological theories, methods and research to the promotion of health, prevention and treatment of illness and disability, analysis and improvement of the health care system and health policy formation. A small number of NHS-funded bursaries are available to cover tuition fees and other expenses.

From the September 2013 intake, successful completion of this course fulfils stage one of the requirements towards Chartered Membership of the Society and full membership of the Division of Health Psychology.

Course objectives

Students on this course will understand and critically evaluate the theoretical basis of health psychology and apply this knowledge to understanding health, health behaviours and health care issues.
The course has a strong experiential focus – it includes contributions from health care practitioners and allows you to carry out a brief placement in a health care setting normally arranged by the student with help/support from the course team.
You are encouraged to carry out research in health care settings where possible.
This MSc is designed to meet the British Psychological Society’s requirements for Stage One training towards Chartered Health Psychology status. Via formal teaching and practical experience, you will acquire relevant skills and core competencies as a basis for professional training in health psychology (Stage Two), or other applications of psychology to health issues.

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of your proficiency such as a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (6.0 in all bands).

Health Psychology is one of the fastest growing areas of applied psychology and this Master’s course provides the first stage of professional training towards becoming a chartered health psychologist. Students intending to go on to become qualified health psychologists can achieve this via working in health care or in academic posts. Scotland is unique in offering a two-year NHS-funded training course for Stage Two health psychology trainees. There are opportunities in many areas, for example, health education or health promotion, or in community-based health improvement projects. This Educational Studies programme is designed to meet these diverse needs by offering a number of core modules as well as the opportunity to select optional modules from a wide range of topics including: educational leadership, inclusion and special educational needs.

This programme was developed in consultation with the education, health and social care, and voluntary sectors, as well as individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and is designed to facilitate the professional development of teachers and other related professionals who work, or wish to work, in this area.

Students explore the theories and practice underpinning ASD and can engage in associated experiential work. In line with the needs identified in the Northern Ireland Executive's Autism Strategy (2013-2020) and associated Action Plan, the course has been attuned to raising awareness, addressing issues specifically related to children and adults on the autism spectrum, and increasing knowledge and skills in relation to evidence-based interventions.

The aim is to enable the study of the theory and practice underpinning the specialist area in order to enhance understanding and ability to engage in research- and evidence-based practice. On completion of the degree, students will have:

  • developed a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the special needs of children, young people and adults diagnosed with ASD
  • shown evidence of critical reflection on their professional practice and be able to apply relevant research literature to both personal and professional experience
  • acquired a range of specialised practical skills which will enhance their ability to support pupils and students in a variety of settings

This module will provide you with an understanding of differing perspectives that underpin quantitative and qualitative methodologies and is required preparation for your research dissertation.

Fundamental Elements of Behaviour Change (online and 1-day workshop)

We will focus on pedagogical methods and practices for inclusion that emanate from the scientific discipline of behaviour analysis. This includes a range of pedagogical methods, including intensive behaviour interventions, incidental teaching, contingency management, precision teaching, dealing with challenging behaviours, and integrating systems support. We will also introduce the practice of measurement of behaviour change and displaying and interpreting behavioural data.

Understanding Adults with ASD (3-day on-campus workshop and online)

You will be assisted to develop and extend your skills in understanding the needs of adults with ASD and their families. We will examine issues of identification, adult diagnosis, mental health, and transitions, as well as challenging behaviours, communication, and sensory issues, relationships, sexuality, self-advocacy, and neuro-diversity. We will consider the implications of an ASD diagnosis for the nuclear and extended family, for schools, homes and employment.

Understanding Children with ASD (3-day on-campus workshop and online)

You will be assisted to develop and extend your skills in understanding the needs of children (aged 0-18) with ASD and their families. We will examine issues of definition, identification, diagnosis and assessment, and early intervention, as well as communication, and sensory issues across childhood and adolescence. We will also consider the implications of an ASD diagnosis for the nuclear and extended family, for teaching and learning in school and home-based programmes as well as transitions between school and home.

Our goal is to help you develop into critical and reflective public health practitioners who have strong problem solving skills while being able to implement creative solutions. Consequently there is a high emphasis on student participation in all modules with a self-directed approach to learning being essential if you are to achieve the aims of the course within the one year timeframe. Our expectation is that you are active and engaged learners. Staff will expect you to attend class thoroughly prepared having reviewed the relevant directed study. In class you will engage with the module material undertaking activities and discussions to help you gain a deeper understanding of the issues and potential solutions. When in class you will be expected to contribute to discussions by asking questions, offering your point of view and sharing your experiences and knowledge. Key guest speakers are invited to join the modules to bring topical and current issues to the learning experience.

If you study this course online then you will be taught via our virtual learning environment CampusMoodle, where you will work both individually and within a group environment, with formal and informal sessions. You will take part in online tutorial sessions through the virtual classroom utilising innovative technologies to facilitate engagement and encourage discussion and debate.

In addition to the Module Leader, e-tutors from practice settings facilitate the discussion forums and online tutorials to help relate theory to practice.

Placements and accreditation

Accreditation by the IUHPE (International Union for Health Promotion Education) means you can be confident that the course meets IUHPE Core Competencies and Professional Standards. This will support your own competence and mobility in Health Promotion practice globally. As a student you would be able to join the IUHPE Student and Early Career Network (ISECN) and on successful completion of the course you can apply for registration with IUHPE giving you professional accreditation and access to a wide range of resources.

The course is also recognised by the Royal Society for Public Health, the world's longest established public health body, which has a multi-disciplinary professional membership dedicated to improvement of the public's health and wellbeing.
