The Behaviour Analysis courses in this programme provide a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board ®, Inc. (BACB) (http://www.bacb.com) as meeting the academic requirements to sit the examination to become a Board Certified Assistant Behaviour Analyst, and contribute to a BACB® approved course sequence for a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®). Students can also progress on to further postgraduate study to complete the full BACB® approved.
Depending on your specialty, you may work in a range of settings (including research institutions, private practice, schools, special education settings, universities, health services, business and industry, governmental agencies and zoos), and with a range of populations (including families, people with psychological problems, children with challenging behaviours, individuals with special needs, teachers, people and their pets, agricultural species and any others seeking positive behaviour change).
Students who specialised in the application of Behaviour Analysis to human behaviour are working in the community, in mental health, and in educational settings and with a wide range of individuals.
However, it doesn’t matter what type of psychology you choose to practice, or whether you end up in a field orientated to people or animals. What is important is that you gain an understanding of how and why organisms behave (i.e., what maintains and/or influences behaviour) whether it be private or public.
Many students intending careers involving application of behaviour analysis (for example, those who intend to work with families, children or with people with an intellectual disability) gain practical experience alongside their graduate studies.
This can be voluntary work or paid work as a support worker. In addition, sometimes experience can be gained though working for parents or trusts who employ students specialising in applied behaviour analysis to work with their children, helping to implement programmes for them.
The MAppPsy(BA) programme includes training in the skills required to work practically applying behaviour analytic principles to behaviour change.
Bridging the gap between medicine and psychology, the course focuses on understanding the behavioural processes around health and sickness. This programme will allow students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for research and practice as a Health Psychologist. The programme covers a wide-range of approaches, from advanced research methods, through to a working and evidence-based knowledge of theory and behaviour change interventions.
Much like our undergraduate programme, this course will adopt a personalised teaching style built on creating relationships between students and staff. All modules use a tutorial style of teaching, in which students are taught weekly in groups of 7 or fewer, allowing for regular quality contact time with your lecturer. It is through this method that students can achieve excellence in their qualification in a supportive environment.
Over the course of the programme, you will develop a strong knowledge base and skill-set appropriate for professional practice in Health Psychology. You’ll learn to analyse, debate, discuss and devise behaviour change interventions for use in primary, secondary and community care. We encourage autonomy in design and analysis of research, allowing you to develop your skills towards becoming an independent researcher, with an increased awareness of the practical reality of working with short- and long-term health conditions.
This is a one year, full-time programme accepting students in both September and January. Alongside the taught modules, there will be opportunities for you to gain practical work experience from our collaborations with Milton Keynes, Stoke Mandeville and Northampton General Hospitals. All modules are assessed by a combination of two assignments. Assignments differ according to the module requirements, but include a variety of assessment styles over the programme including written examinations, research reports, critical reflections and role plays.

The MSc in Health Psychology sits within the Centre for Health and Relationship Research (CHR). The CHR is a research hub focusing upon research in five core areas: Pain, Social Support, Sexual & Reproductive Health, Spinal Cord Injury, and Health in Vulnerable Populations. Nutritionists within the public health sector play an important role in promoting good health and preventing dietary related disease in the population. If you are a recent graduate or health professional, this course equips you with the knowledge and skills to specialise in public health nutrition. You graduate ready to enter the profession or advance into a leadership role.
The course has been designed following Association for Nutritionist guidelines in consultation with public health partners, ensuring you are taught to a nationally recognised standard. You build your knowledge of • nutrition • behaviour change theories • physiology • biochemistry • food science • public health policy and practice.
It also provides opportunities for you to develop managerial skills, practical skills and counselling skills relevant to the public health sector.
The nutrition and public health sectors are the main focus of the course, but you also develop broader analytical and personal skills applicable to many careers. The student-centred approach to learning includes seminars, workshops and practical sessions. We also encourage you to attend conferences, external workshops and other sector related events. The blend of core nutrition and public health content and broader managerial and work-related learning enhances your employability in the public health sector.

This course is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN). Successfully completing an accredited course allows graduates to apply for Direct Entry Registration (at Associate Level) with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN).
With the knowledge and expertise you gain from this course, you will be in an ideal position to develop a successful career in nutrition and public health management.
Typical roles of graduates include • public health manager, such as obesity lead or healthy schools • food development co-ordinator • health promotion specialist • company nutritionist • nutritionist for international humanitarian organisations • nutrition researcher.
You can also continue with further study by completing a PhD.
