If you’re a professional wishing to underpin your work with theory and practical ways forward, or a graduate wishing to specialise in behaviour change or add social science to your skill set, this course is for you.

Our MSc Behaviour Change is the first masters course of its kind. The course will provide you with psychological theories and models so that you can develop a greater understanding of human behaviour and behaviour change. You’ll acquire the knowledge and transferable skills required to critically evaluate and design interventions that provide opportunities for people to change in a variety of practical contexts.

You’ll be taught by an enthusiastic and experienced team of research-active psychologists and ergonomists. We share a passion for promoting applied evidence-based science relevant to the understanding and promotion of behaviour change.

We offer three pathways to a masters award in Behaviour Change:
MSc Behaviour Change (Health and Wellbeing)
MSc Behaviour Change (Occupational Health and Safety)
MSc Behaviour Change (Ergonomics and Human Factors)

You’ll study one module per term (three modules per year). You can do either the full MSc in your chosen pathway over three years, or take a step off award after one year (Postgraduate Certificate) or after two years (Postgraduate Diploma in your chosen pathway).
Although the three pathways share several modules, they are distinctive and tailored to the specific needs of students on each specific pathway. For all module coursework, you’re encouraged to focus on specific contexts that matter to you and your practical experience. At the start of year two, you study a pathway-specific module, and in your masters research project, you’ll identify a research issue related to behaviour change relevant to your chosen pathway.

Changing human behaviour is at the heart of solving global problems central to wellbeing, social cohesion and environmental sustainability. For example, preventing obesity, pollution and waste of resources require change at individual, organisational and population levels. This cross-disciplinary programme uniquely equips students to work in this emerging and exciting field.

Degree information

This cross-disciplinary Master's programme will:
-Equip students with the ability to critically appraise theories, methods and evidence for understanding behaviour and behaviour change in a range of contexts.
-Train students in the design, implementation and evaluation of behaviour change interventions.
-Enable students to support the translation of evidence into practice across disciplines and sectors.

Dissertation/research project
MSc students undertake an independent research project, culminating in a dissertation of 8,000-10,000 words. Projects will also be presented at a mini-conference.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, small-group and project work and independent study. All tutors are highly experienced, internationally recognised researchers and/or practitioners in behaviour change from a range of disciplines, including: health, transport, built environment, digital technology, policy and ethics. Assessment is through coursework, unseen examinations and research projects. Although not formally offered, we can support students to find and complete a work experience placement as part of their programme.

Market research has shown there is a large demand for behaviour change expertise across the private, public and voluntary sectors and in roles relating to policy, practice and research.

On graduation we anticipate students will find work as health professionals, policy officers, researchers and research managers, IT developers and user experience designers, human resource managers, management consultants, urban and transport planners. The range of optional modules available on this programme creates a unique opportunity for students to tailor their degree to their specific interests and career aspirations.

Graduates will be equipped with a broad set of skills that can be applied to many different careers.

The teaching will be delivered using a combination of a few intensive week-long blocks spread throughout the year and blended learning involving bi-monthly on-site teaching and on-line seminars and discussion. There will be a time-commitment for 8 mid-week sessions per semester and 4 of these will require on-site attendance. Students will participate in regular on-line discussion throughout the course. An additional 15 day commitment is required for completion of the embedded work placement. A number of different work formats are available for the work placement and students working in relevant areas may be able to complete this in their current workplace. Assessment is by on-line discussion, essays, case studies, reflective accounts, presentations, practical assessment, evaluative report and research dissertation.

Career Prospects

Integral to all parts of the course is the development of skills and competencies in areas highlighted as a priority by Public Health England. This will include preventative approaches and tackling emerging conditions early, engaging hard to reach groups in the prevention and management of chronic disease, including males, ethnic minorities, pregnant women, the elderly and those from low socio-economic groups. They will be informed by the competencies put forward in the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework at Level 7. The course will include a work-based learning component whereby students are involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of a particular project and this will place graduates in a favourable position to climb the career ladder in organisations with a chronic disease focus.

Work Placement

A core aspect of the program is a six-week field placement in which students secure a sponsor/mentor, determine a project, implement and evaluate the project, and practise and reflect on coaching relationships and processes. The site of the placement may be within a current employment setting or another appropriate worksite. Students are exposed to inter-professional learning, planning and leadership, coaching practice, collegiality and collaboration. Online interactions and reflections occur with the instructor and class throughout the placement experience.

Upon graduation, students are prepared to add wellness coaching to their present work role or to begin working as a health and wellness coaching professional. Employment opportunities exist in outpatient settings such as fitness centres, workplace settings, bariatric/weight loss centres, cardiac rehab programs, outpatient cancer support programs, outpatient chronic disease management programs, mental health support programs, community health centres, and as members of family health-care teams.

In your first year, you’ll lay the foundations for your studies in psychology, getting to grips with the core theories and developing important intellectual and practical skills. The programme is for both recent graduates and experienced practitioners. Our postgraduate courses improve employability prospects for both those with established careers and new entrants to the field. Many of our students already work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in professional, management or supporting capacities. Our programmes support their continuing professional development and enhance their opportunities for career advancement. Other students, who are at the beginning of their careers, move on to a range of professional roles in health and social care including working as psychologists in learning disability or behavioural specialists in community learning disability teams; service management of development roles; clinical psychology training or a PhD.

Our Applied Behaviour Analysis programme includes a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Its completion, therefore, meets two of the requirements for certification as a Behaviour Analyst. Successful students will need to obtain appropriate supervised experience and pass the BACB exam. Many of our ABA students hope to take this career path, applying their skills either in work with children or adults with autism (ie early intervention programmes or in schools using an ABA approach) or with children/adults with learning disabilities whose behaviour is described as challenging. Every week we are asked to notify our students of opportunities in these fields. Our ABA programme is also suitable for parents of children/adults with autism or learning disability, who are looking to increase their own understanding of ABA.

Module structure
- Challenging Behaviour
This module explores challenging behaviour from a variety of perspectives and provides you with an overview of individual and contextual factors which may influence children and young people's behaviour. During seminar workshops you will discuss theoretical perspectives in relation to problematising children and young people's social, emotional and mental health. Particular attention will be paid to 'causes' of challenging behaviour, individual and whole school approaches to managing behaviour and the importance of recognising pupil voice and increasing pupil participation. You will be encouraged to reflect on, and critique, alternative educational provisions.

- Action Research (double module)
You will determine the content of the sessions by focusing on the inquiries selected by both yourself and others, adopting a 'learning set' approach. Group seminars and workshops will provide a structured introduction to action research followed by the development of small working groups to support the stages of individual projects and provide peer group support. Your tutor will signpost you to relevant academic theory and research and support material from the MA in Education online resources.

Teaching and learning

The first module, 'Challenging Behaviour', requires regular evening attendance (seven evening sessions) in the Autumn and this is followed by a double action research module in which you will complete a research project in your own school based on work with children / young people with behaviour difficulties.

This research project will be supported by six workshops between January and June, and individual tutorial support based around your particular project.

Workshops take place on Wednesday evenings 5.00 - 8.00pm on the Harcourt Hill Campus.

You’ll cover the whole spectrum of psychological research skills and most research methods used by psychologists, and have the opportunity to study methods that are particularly relevant to you. We aim to equip you with high-level research skills and give you the opportunity to apply these skills in original psychological research. Early in the programme, you’ll begin a substantial independent piece of research and continue this throughout the year. Special emphasis is placed on practical research skills and communication - these are integrated in project work to achieve professional standards of psychological research. If you study full time the programme lasts one year starting in late September and involves attendance for at least two days a week over two 12-week teaching periods. The prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a cost-effective means of managing the leading cause of death in the UK and in many parts of the developed world.

The MSc is delivered by a team of experienced academics and leading specialist front-line lead practitioners, enabling graduates to leave with the most up-to-date level of knowledge. The aims of our course are for you to develop:

Health Psychology improves wellbeing by applying psychological theories, methods and research to the promotion of health, prevention and treatment of illness and disability, analysis and improvement of the health care system and health policy formation. A small number of NHS-funded bursaries are available to cover tuition fees and other expenses.

From the September 2013 intake, successful completion of this course fulfils stage one of the requirements towards Chartered Membership of the Society and full membership of the Division of Health Psychology.

Course objectives

Students on this course will understand and critically evaluate the theoretical basis of health psychology and apply this knowledge to understanding health, health behaviours and health care issues.
The course has a strong experiential focus – it includes contributions from health care practitioners and allows you to carry out a brief placement in a health care setting normally arranged by the student with help/support from the course team.
You are encouraged to carry out research in health care settings where possible.
This MSc is designed to meet the British Psychological Society’s requirements for Stage One training towards Chartered Health Psychology status. Via formal teaching and practical experience, you will acquire relevant skills and core competencies as a basis for professional training in health psychology (Stage Two), or other applications of psychology to health issues.

Our goal is to help you develop into critical and reflective public health practitioners who have strong problem solving skills while being able to implement creative solutions. Consequently there is a high emphasis on student participation in all modules with a self-directed approach to learning being essential if you are to achieve the aims of the course within the one year timeframe. Studying on this course enables you to develop your knowledge and skills to work with children, young people, their families and carers to improve health and wellbeing.

You learn to develop a pragmatic public health philosophy for family healthcare and an evidence-based skill set applicable to the challenges of contemporary practice.

To meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards, your studies consists of 50% practice and 50% theory (alongside 100% attendance). We structure the postgraduate diploma to reflect the important balance of the practice elements, which are designated practice days or work-based learning. A 10 week consolidated practice block (in semester 3) enables you to work independently while remaining under the supervision of a practice teacher. The theoretical elements involve a mix of learning approaches including self-directed study days.

Another key aspect of your studies is to develop an understanding of the levels of accountability and responsibility you take on in these roles. You learn how to ensure public protection is developed to deliver safe and effective health improvements to individuals, groups and communities.

There are many opportunities on the course to share learning from your peers and other disciplines from across the primary /community care teams and services that work with children, young people and families.

When you start to put what you have learnt into practice, you benefit from strong partnerships with health, education and local authority organisations in the region.

The modern and diverse placements you go on are designed to meet the changing needs of children, young people and families, and may include placement with social services, education and a variety of organisations from the voluntary sector – foster collaborations with those that work alongside health visitors and school nurses.

You also complete a research-based module which provides a building block for further study from the exit award of PgDip to MSc qualification. The learning from the research module equips you to use policy and research to underpin and develop innovative practice and gives you the skills to frame a research question, take empirical research and write up an academic dissertation. If you successfully complete the PgDip, you can at a later date (pending additional funding and study) undertake a 60 credit dissertation module and gain an MSc qualification.

Experienced health visitor and school nurse lecturers deliver the course. As a student you learn from a highly motivated and proactive teaching team aiming to improve lives through excellence in professionalism. We ensure our students and the public benefit from a commitment to evidence-based education, application to practice and impact on quality of care.

Some lecturers are engaged in ongoing research and are publishing in peer reviewed journals with areas of expertise that include safeguarding, the child and families agenda, behaviour change and community development.

Four members of our teaching team are also Fellows of the Institute of Health Visiting (iHV), a professional body which strives for excellence in the health visiting profession.

Successfully completing the course

-Gives you a deeper awareness of the need to maintain and develop your own competence and that of others in the changing context of health visiting and school nursing, with a specific focus on the leadership required to ensure high quality care and enhance service user experience.
-Develops and enhances your leadership skills to foster excellence in public health practice and shape services to meet the identified needs of individuals, groups and communities.

Gaining an MSc qualification enhances your employability in advanced and specialist roles available to health visitors and school nurses. These may include working in public health positions in local authorities or in advisory and health education positions in acute health care.

Professional recognition

This course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Graduates are eligible to apply to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse - Health Visitor or School Nurse.
You must be registered with the NMC in order to practise as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse in the UK.
To access the full course and gain the NMC recognised qualifications, you need to be sponsored by an employing NHS organisation (hence have NHS contract for the length of the course).

Course structure

Postgraduate Diploma
-Full time – 1 year (52 weeks).
-Part time – typically 2 years (This is only an option is you are supported by an NHS Employer).

MSc module - you must have successfully completed the PgDip in either health visiting or school nursing to be eligible to apply to the MSc
-Full time – 2 years.
-Part time – 3 to 6 years.
