Changing human behaviour is at the heart of solving global problems central to wellbeing, social cohesion and environmental sustainability. Government and public bodies, charities and companies routinely seek to integrate behaviour change within their policies and practices. This cross-disciplinary programme will train a new generation to work in this emerging field.
This cross-disciplinary MSc programme will:

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, small-group and project work and independent study. All tutors are highly experienced, internationally recognised researchers and/or practitioners in behaviour change from a range of disciplines, including: health, transport, built environment, digital technology, policy and ethics. Assessment is through coursework, unseen examinations and research projects. Although not formally offered, we can support students to find and complete a work experience placement as part of their programme.

Market research has shown there is a large demand for behaviour change expertise across the private, public and voluntary sectors and in roles relating to policy, practice and research.

The MSc in Psychology of Applied Behaviour Change is for graduates of Psychology wishing to extend their knowledge, research skills and experience of applications of psychology. The programme will provide a flexible support that responds to student needs, recognising the importance of their experience in engaging with the programme materials and content.
The programme is suitable for students already in employment looking to improve their everyday practice and skills base, or recent graduates looking to extend their skills and knowledge in further preparation for a career. The programme has been designed to build research skills (with an emphasis on evidence based practice), and to support students in thinking about and gaining skills that focus on the importance of meaningful relationships that support behavioural change. The Behaviour Analysis courses in this programme provide a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board ®, Inc. (BACB) (http://www.bacb.com) as meeting the academic requirements to sit the examination to become a Board Certified Assistant Behaviour Analyst, and contribute to a BACB® approved course sequence for a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®). Students can also progress on to further postgraduate study to complete the full BACB® approved.
Depending on your specialty, you may work in a range of settings (including research institutions, private practice, schools, special education settings, universities, health services, business and industry, governmental agencies and zoos), and with a range of populations (including families, people with psychological problems, children with challenging behaviours, individuals with special needs, teachers, people and their pets, agricultural species and any others seeking positive behaviour change).
Students who specialised in the application of Behaviour Analysis to human behaviour are working in the community, in mental health, and in educational settings and with a wide range of individuals.
However, it doesn’t matter what type of psychology you choose to practice, or whether you end up in a field orientated to people or animals. What is important is that you gain an understanding of how and why organisms behave (i.e., what maintains and/or influences behaviour) whether it be private or public.
Many students intending careers involving application of behaviour analysis (for example, those who intend to work with families, children or with people with an intellectual disability) gain practical experience alongside their graduate studies.
This can be voluntary work or paid work as a support worker. In addition, sometimes experience can be gained though working for parents or trusts who employ students specialising in applied behaviour analysis to work with their children, helping to implement programmes for them.
The MAppPsy(BA) programme includes training in the skills required to work practically applying behaviour analytic principles to behaviour change.
Behaviour analysis has been recognised as the basis for medically necessary intervention and educational provision for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. With the growing prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (now estimated to be 1:68) behaviour analysis has experienced a significant rise in popularity.
There are over 13,000 Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs) worldwide and this number is predicted to rise given that professional approval is seen as the key to delivering high quality services to individuals, families, in schools and in related settings. Furthermore, behaviour analysis is increasingly being applied to general education, special education and organisational leadership settings.
This programme is a highly interactive blended learning programme (mostly online with some face to face workshops) providing professionals from a wide range of backgrounds with scientifically validated expertise that is applicable to mainstream and special needs education, inclusion, curriculum, learning, and pedagogy. It should be of interest to professionals wishing to become Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA®), to those in the ‘helping’ professions (e.g. teachers, speech/language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists) and students preparing for PhD studies.

Irish farmers are a high-risk group for cardiovascular disease (CVD), which has significant implications for farmers’ health and farm productivity. The majority of CVD cases are caused by unhealthy lifestyle behaviours and are therefore preventable. There is a gap, however, in research evidence in what prompts farmers to adopt lifestyle and health behaviour change. This qualitative study will be part of a larger study that assesses the effectiveness of a health behaviour change programme (Farmers Have Hearts; ‘FHH’), designed to improve the cardiovascular health status of Irish farmers (n=960). Specifically, this study will explore barriers and enabling factors to health behaviour change among farmers within the wider context of farmers’ attitudes to their health and notions of farming and rural masculinity(ies).
Using a community-based participatory research approach, qualitative methodologies (focus groups/interviews/observation) will be used to explore farmers’ experiences of FHH and the unique characteristics of farm settings (marts/co-ops) as a hook to engage farmers. Purposive sampling will be used to recruit a diverse sample of participants. The principles of Grounded Theory will be used to inform data analysis and guide a cyclical and reflective data collection process. Open and comparative coding techniques will be used to analyse data and conceptual mapping will identify emerging themes. Field notes and reflective journaling will be used to capture the nuances of farmers’ engagement with various elements of FHH.
The study findings will inform best practice approaches to health interventions targeted at Irish farmers and will have an important bearing on public health policy and farm health and safety policy. Findings will be disseminated through national/international conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications and a range of knowledge-translation activities (farming publications, social media, toolkits). The study will strengthen relationships with project partners (HSE, Irish Heart, Teagasc and Glanbia) and will advance the strategic objectives of healthCORE/socialCORE.
This innovative Master's degree aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge and strategic approach to develop and analyse social change campaigns and activism, with a particular focus on the role of communications and the media. This is the only postgraduate programme of its kind, and has a flexible delivery to suit both full-time and part-time students.

The course team has extensive experience both in developing social change campaigns and in academic research into the connections between media, protest and social change. There are three core modules. The first develops practical planning and campaign communications skills, the second considers media and activism theories, and the third combines theory with practice, reflecting on applying concepts like power and ethics within the setting of campaign communications. Each module has assessments – e.g. essays, campaign plans, reflective blogs, debates and presentations - rather than exams. These three core modules make up the Postgraduate Certificate.

Applications are invited for an MSc by Research fees funded studentship post commencing 16th October 2018. The Studentship is open to home/EU students. It will run for 1 year and the fees of the MSc by Research programme will be paid by the Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR) at the University of Bedfordshire.
ISPAR delivers research spanning across sport science, physical activity, health, psychology, behaviour change, pedagogy and social sciences of sport. In the latest Research Excellent Framework assessment 95% of our research was rated as internationally recognised or better.
The Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR) and the Institute for Research in Applicable Computing (IRAC) at the University of Bedfordshire have partnered to deliver this exciting interdisciplinary research project. The project will undertake an evaluation of a mobile phone app and online platform developed by these two research institutes to promote the health and wellbeing of breast cancer patients. The app and online platform are designed to empower patients in their healthcare by encouraging them to self-manage their condition. The tools help to monitor health, medication reminders, medical appointments, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, pain, and fatigue, which are common problems in cancer patients. The app also delivers the patient tips and reminders for healthy behaviours and provides interactive visualisation of the patient’s data, which can be shared with medical professionals to inform clinical decisions.
The successful candidate will undertake a research project to evaluate the effects of these tools on quality of life, pain, fatigue, physical activity, and sedentary behaviour in breast cancer patients. The candidate will gain research experience in a clinical setting and will work within an interdisciplinary team on this exciting project. It is expected that the student will contribute to the study design, NHS ethical approval process, delivery and evaluation of the intervention, and author a journal publication to disseminate the findings.
The applicant will gain experience in the design, conduct and presentation of research relating to the project. Applicants will have a good first degree (minimum of 2:1) in a relevant discipline (e.g. physical activity, sport and exercise science, applied computing, biomedical science).

Education professionals in the twenty-first century are expected to have strong knowledge and skills in core areas as well as an ability to move flexibly in and out of a variety of specialist areas. This Educational Studies programme is designed to meet these diverse needs by offering a number of core modules as well as the opportunity to select optional modules from a wide range of topics including: educational leadership, inclusion and special educational needs.
The programme offers students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with current research on learning and teaching, assessment and curriculum design. In addition, students are encouraged to consider and reflect on the practical implications of theoretical perspectives and research findings.
The MEd in Educational Studies is open to teachers in primary-, secondary- and tertiary-level institutions as well as to professionals in other fields of education.
On completion of the modules students will be able to:

- We provide a professional development opportunity for teachers and other related professionals who wish to extend and renew their study of education on a wide front;
- The diversity of topics is particularly appreciated if you want to learn across a range of topics, rather than focusing on one specialist subject. Modules include: assessment, behaviour, curriculum, learning, reflective practice and many more. You may also study modules from our other Master’s programmes (if you meet the entrance requirements and receive approval);
- We understand the many demands on students’ time, so the content is delivered in a mixture of face-to-face and online formats and you can study one or more of our modules as a short course;
- If you have completed other Masters-level awards, eg PGCE, within the last 10 years you are eligible to transfer credit. The credit transfer application must be submitted at the same time as the online course application;
- You may also undertake individual course modules as short courses without completing a full degree.
- If you don’t want or need to study for the research dissertation, flexible exit awards (PG Diploma, PG Certificate) are available.
The MEd in Education Studies is awarded to students who successfully complete 120 CATS points from taught modules and 60 CATS points from a Master's dissertation.
Exit qualifications are available. Students may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma by successfully completing 120 CATS points from taught modules or a Postgraduate Certificate by successfully completing 60 CATS points from taught modules.

There are no written examinations. Most modules are assessed by coursework. Online modules are assessed by a variety of methods, eg multiple choice exam and contributions to an online forum.
