Behaviour analysts focus on understanding how a person’s interactions with the environment influence behaviour. They use this information to design effective interventions that will help people learn more appropriate behaviours, as well as reducing challenging behaviour.

This MSc Behaviour Analysis and Therapy course provides a solid understanding of the scientific principles that underpin behaviour analysis, and the therapeutic techniques derived from those principles. You will be taught by a team of Board Certified Behaviour Analysts who are internationally-recognised for their research and clinical work in the field.

Our MSc is approved by the Behaviour Analysis Certification Board (BACB), which is the international regulatory body for the practice of behaviour analysis. The MSc Behaviour Analysis and Therapy has been designed to reflect certification standards and covers a full range of topics in Behaviour Analysis. However, it is possible for students to complete our Postgraduate Certificate programme which allows students to complete supervised practice in addition to this MSc. Students may either choose to start this qualification after completion of the MSc or may begin work towards their supervised practice alongside their MSc studies.

Learning and teaching methods

You will be taught through face-to-face delivery in the form of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Additionally you will develop your research skills through the completion of a supervised dissertation component. The teaching delivery will be blocked into two days per week for full-time students.

The teaching team has well established links with schools, social care settings and healthcare providers, which provide ideal locations for dissertation research. You may also have opportunities to assist with ongoing research or clinical work in the field, as well as working in the University’s Psychology and Well-Being Clinic (PAWB Wales), which provides early intervention therapy to children with autism.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Professionals trained in behaviour analysis are in increasing demand in the UK, particularly those who are BACB-certified.

Behaviour analysts are employed in a variety of contexts, including service providers for people with autism and/or learning disabilities, the NHS, schools, and residential treatment facilities for people with challenging behaviour. Some behaviour analysts also work as independent consultants in their areas of expertise.

Assessment methods

Assessments include examinations, practical assignments, and essays. You will also complete a dissertation, which allows you to analyse behaviour systematically and evaluate the success of treatment under the close supervision of a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst.

As a student in the School of Psychology, you’ll have access to the latest learning technologies, facilities and equipment, including excellent designated facilities.

These include observation and interview rooms equipped with two-way mirror, CCTV and audio and allow research and interview practice sessions to be conducted and recorded onto DVD. We also have a custom-built air-conditioned PC laboratory which provides access to specialist software for running psychology experiments and conducting careers guidance interviews. More specialist equipment is also available in our cognitive suite and more details about this are given below.

This includes eye tracking equipment which is capable of studying the eye movements of individuals whilst they complete cognitive tasks. What you will study

Our Behaviour Analysis course is practice-based, giving you an opportunity to apply your behaviour analytic skills in a range of settings. You will study 20-25 hours per week (full-time) or 10-15 hours per week (part-time) in a placement arranged by the supervision team, as well as attending weekly supervision meetings.

Learning and teaching methods

You will rotate placements approximately every six months, which will allow you to support people with a range of challenging behaviours with behaviour analytic assessment and intervention strategies.

Clients may include individuals with various disorders or difficulties, including autism, learning disabilities, social and emotional difficulties, ADHD, and antisocial behaviour. Placements with children, adolescents, or adults are available.

Settings may include, but are not limited to, schools, the NHS Learning Disability Service, and residential treatment centres. You also will have the opportunity to work in the University’s Psychology and Well-Being Clinic Wales (PAWB Wales), where you will assist in providing early intervention therapy to young children with autism. We are the only University in the UK to have an on-campus behaviour analysis clinic.

What is Applied Behaviour Analysis?

Behaviour Analysis is the science of behaviour. This means that we are interested in everything a person does, including what we feel (emotional behaviour) and think (cognitive behaviour). When this science is applied to enhance or develop socially relevant behaviours we call it Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). There are many applications, for example, to enhance or teach communication and language skills, social skills, reading and other academic skills, life skills, business or classroom management, and many more. In other words, ABA is utilised to help many people in many situations.
Due to the effectiveness of the intervention methods and teaching techniques based on ABA, the demand for behaviour analytic services has increased worldwide, not only for individuals with autism and other special educational needs, but also for application in the mainstream inclusive classroom and many other educational, clinical, or general life contexts.

BACB Recognition

Professionals who are Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBA) have the skills and knowledge to develop, implement and evaluate quality interventions that help to produce positive behavioural changes in a range of settings. The six modules of the MSc ABA cover the required academic curriculum. The programme presently does not include BACB practice requirements, but we have many national and international affiliate organisations who welcome our students and offer placements (some are paid, some unpaid) and supervision (in person or online). Supervised practice requirements can be undertaken while you are studying on the MSc ABA.

Aims

On successful completion of this programme students will be able to:
o demonstrate knowledge and understanding of any educational research, policy, practice and theory covered in the programme;
o analyse and apply critically examples of the research literature relating to the content of the programme;
o show evidence of reflection on their professional practice;
o demonstrate knowledge of a range of educational research methods;
o choose fit-for-purpose methods for a research project within the context of their own professional role;
o demonstrate engagement in the processes of research planning, data collection and analysis (as appropriate), and research reporting.

Programme Structure and Modules

Students may enrol on a full-time (1 year) or part-time (3 years) basis.
In order to be awarded the MSc ABA, students must successfully complete six taught modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits) as well as audit the Research Methods in Education online module. An exit qualification (PG Diploma ABA) is available. Students may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Behaviour Analysis by successfully completing 120 credits from taught pathway modules.
The programme content is delivered online with multiple focused weekly virtual interactions that include peer- and tutor feedback. This structure allows for acquisition of knowledge, information sharing, development of critical thinking skills, and giving and receiving immediate feedback. An intensive on-campus 5-hour consolidation workshop takes place once during each module to give students the opportunity to meet each other and course tutors face-to-face.

The majority of students are already in relevant jobs and the job market is healthy for BCBAs at present. Professionals who are certified BCBAs have the skills and knowledge to develop, implement and evaluate quality interventions that help to produce positive behavioural changes in a range of settings. Increasingly, jobs advertised for behaviour managers or specialists require BCBA status.

For example, preventing obesity, pollution and waste of resources require change at individual, organisational and population levels. This cross-disciplinary programme uniquely equips students to work in this emerging and exciting field.

This cross-disciplinary Master's programme will:

MSc students undertake an independent research project, culminating in a dissertation of 8,000-10,000 words. Projects will also be presented at a mini-conference.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, small-group and project work and independent study. All tutors are highly experienced, internationally recognised researchers and/or practitioners in behaviour change from a range of disciplines, including: health, transport, built environment, digital technology, policy and ethics. Assessment is through coursework, unseen examinations and research projects. Although not formally offered, we can support students to find and complete a work experience placement as part of their programme.

Market research has shown there is a large demand for behaviour change expertise across the private, public and voluntary sectors and in roles relating to policy, practice and research.

On graduation we anticipate students will find work as health professionals, policy officers, researchers and research managers, IT developers and user experience designers, human resource managers, management consultants, urban and transport planners. The range of optional modules available on this programme creates a unique opportunity for students to tailor their degree to their specific interests and career aspirations.

Our MSc Behaviour Change is the first masters course of its kind. The course will provide you with psychological theories and models so that you can develop a greater understanding of human behaviour and behaviour change. We offer three pathways to a masters award in Behaviour Change:

During seminar workshops you will discuss theoretical perspectives in relation to problematising children and young people's social, emotional and mental health. Particular attention will be paid to 'causes' of challenging behaviour, individual and whole school approaches to managing behaviour and the importance of recognising pupil voice and increasing pupil participation. You will be encouraged to reflect on, and critique, alternative educational provisions.

- Action Research (double module)
You will determine the content of the sessions by focusing on the inquiries selected by both yourself and others, adopting a 'learning set' approach. Group seminars and workshops will provide a structured introduction to action research followed by the development of small working groups to support the stages of individual projects and provide peer group support. Your tutor will signpost you to relevant academic theory and research and support material from the MA in Education online resources.

Teaching and learning

The first module, 'Challenging Behaviour', requires regular evening attendance (seven evening sessions) in the Autumn and this is followed by a double action research module in which you will complete a research project in your own school based on work with children / young people with behaviour difficulties.

This research project will be supported by six workshops between January and June, and individual tutorial support based around your particular project.

Careers

Our Applied Behaviour Analysis programme includes a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Its completion, therefore, meets two of the requirements for certification as a Behaviour Analyst. Successful students will need to obtain appropriate supervised experience and pass the BACB exam. Many of our ABA students hope to take this career path, applying their skills either in work with children or adults with autism (ie early intervention programmes or in schools using an ABA approach) or with children/adults with learning disabilities whose behaviour is described as challenging. Every week we are asked to notify our students of opportunities in these fields. Our ABA programme is also suitable for parents of children/adults with autism or learning disability, who are looking to increase their own understanding of ABA.

The course provides students with a carefully planned sequence of learning opportunities to facilitate individual development through six assessments.

This sequence includes academic essays focused on understanding challenging behaviour, assessments of individual student behaviour identified as problematic, the development and implementation of plans to address this, reflection on institutional behaviour policy and a piece of small-scale research in schools/colleges.

• Assessment one, Unit 1, requires reflection on understandings of behavioural problems, taking individual students’ contexts into account. The second and third involve assessing a learner whose behaviour is seen as challenging, and designing, developing, implementing and evaluating a plan designed to address this behaviour.

• Assessments in Unit 2 relate to analysis and reflection on current school/college policy on behaviour, and the design, development, implementation and critical evaluation of a small-scale research project focused on effecting change in the institution that will have a positive impact on student behaviour.

Careers

Typically graduates of this course either continue working in their own institutions or else are promoted to positions of greater responsibility.

Successful completion results in 60 Masters’ level credits that may be used towards an MA Education.

You’ll consider organisational culture and how this differs around the world, exploring the different management strategies that maximise organisational effectiveness.

Focusing on real-world scenarios to develop your understanding of the way organisations operate, you’ll build the skills to identify, analyse and solve complex business problems. You’ll also examine recruitment, training and management processes, and how to manage organisational development and change.

During the course you’ll have the opportunity to gain certification in Occupational Test User: Ability and Personality, which is a valuable tool for selection and development (an additional cost will apply).

Core modules will give you a comprehensive understanding of key concepts, theories, practices and challenges in organizational behaviour.

You’ll examine the individual, team and organisational factors that affect employee behaviour and the consequences they have for an organisation’s performance – and exactly what constitutes an “effective” organisation in the first place. You’ll also consider the personnel selection and training processes that allow firms to recruit and develop effective employees, and improve your understanding of research design and methodology.

All lecturers on this programme have a strong research profile, which they bring to bear when presenting the theoretical, technical, and applied components of consumer behaviour.

Research Project (60 credits)

You'll undertake an independent piece of research related to consumer behaviour. The dissertation should be no longer than 10,000 words. You'll be allocated to an appropriate supervisor.

Option modules

You can choose one approved 30 credit module, or two approved 15 credit modules. The list of approved modules will include those run by the Institute of Management Studies and by other departments at Goldsmiths that have modules relevant to Consumer Behaviour.

Programme description

This programme provides flexible postgraduate study designed to specifically address the demand for online clinical animal behaviour teaching within a supported learning environment. The programme will utilise an evidence based approach to explore the potential motivations, management and treatment options for abnormal and/or problem behaviours commonly expressed by companion animal species living within a domestic environment.

The subject involves a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on knowledge and techniques from the fields of psychology, ethology, neurobiology, pharmacology and veterinary science. This programme will contain teaching and learning that is aimed at your academic preparation for a professional career working with companion animals in a variety of settings, including clinical animal behaviour counselling.

Programme structure

This MSc programme is modular in structure, offering a flexible student-centred approach to the choice of courses studied. You must complete a sufficient number of course credits to achieve the following awards:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: 60 credits
  • Postgraduate Diploma: 120 credits
  • Master of Science: 180 credits

You may undertake this programme by intermittent study (flexible progression route), accruing credits within the following maximum time limits:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: 12-24 months
  • Postgraduate Diploma: 24-48 months
  • Master of Science: 36-72 months (this includes a maximum period of 12 months from the start of your dissertation to its completion)

Year 1: Certificate Courses

You will study Principles of Applied Animal Behaviour and Clinical Animal Behaviour along with either Anthrozoology (recommended for those continuing to Diploma/MSc) or one of two other elective courses.

Year 2: Diploma Courses

You will study Clinical Animal Behaviour in Practice along with two elective courses from a choice of 4.

Year 3: Masters

The dissertation element of the programme will allow further development of scientific skills and may take the form of a short research project, case studies relating to relevant professional experience or an extended literature review.

Postgraduate Professional Development

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course(s), without the time or financial commitment of a full Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses over two years through our PPD scheme. These lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit. Alternatively, after one year of taking courses you can choose to transfer your credits and continue on to studying towards a higher award on a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme. Although PPD courses have various start dates throughout a year you may only start a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme in the month of September. Any time spent studying PPD will be deducted from the amount of time you will have left to complete a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme.

Learning outcomes

Alongside the subject content, the programme will also enable the acquisition of a range of transferable skills, such as computer skills, report writing, giving online presentations and time and project management.

You will be able to:

  • consider how a scientific understanding of how biology and normal species specific behaviour can be applied in the management of problematic and/or abnormal behaviour in a range of companion animal species
  • develop a thorough understanding of the methods and approaches used for the management and treatment of common problematic behaviour in companion animals
  • gain an understanding of the scientific basis to a range of adjuncts used in the management of problem behaviour, including behavioural therapy, psychopharmacology and pheromonotherapy

Career opportunities

Students are expected to find work in the field of companion animal behaviour and welfare as well as working in education, or as advisors with non-governmental organisations and governments.
