Course detail

This MSc will develop research skills which practitioners may employ in their services, and which may also serve as preparation for subsequent doctoral study. Increasingly, research and evaluation is an expected component of mental health services to assess outcome and effectiveness. Information management, evaluation planning, ethical decision making, data collection, analysis and dissemination all share a role in the process of research, and this year is designed to develop your skills in each of these areas.

Suitability

The Masters programme is targeted at graduates of the PG Diploma in Psychological Therapies: CBT.

Content

The programme consists of two modules, which are designed around learning outcomes that provide you with the essential skills for undertaking effective research. Module 1 centres on the conception, design and writing of a research proposal for an original project with relevance to CBT. Module 2 involves you conducting the research: obtaining ethical approval, gathering, analysing data, and interpreting results, culminating in writing a research thesis.

Format

There are two modules in this Masters programme. These are required to be taken in sequence for the award of the MSc qualification. Both modules are designed around learning outcomes that will help you gain skills that are essential to undertaking effective research. These skills, academic and communication skills, managing one’s own learning and working with others are also skills that are directly linked to successful employment and to preparation for a clinical doctorate qualification, if desired.

The curriculum is integrated in such a way as to be able to deliver a step-by-step approach to help build research skills that will have immediate ‘real life’ applicability. In order to do this successfully the programme is developed around a case-example approach to learning. Case study vignettes and current policy documents will be drawn from our stakeholders in the NHS, community organisations and charities. These real life case studies underpin our commitment to provide skills that are needed by employers and in further postgraduate study.

Assessment

You are required to complete a range of assessments, both formative (not requiring a pass mark) and summative (need to be passed). Formative assessment strategies will include formative writing assignments and reflective reports, tests, presentations, tutor responses to participation in online discussion groups, tutor comments on draft pieces of work and peer review.

The summative assessments will include the project proposal and the final research thesis. The proposal will consist of a 4000-word submission in which you will demonstrate your understanding of the background to your research study, and of the different methodologies and strategies you intend to use. Summative assessment will culminate in the design, production and presentation of an independent research project, which will test the extent to which you can apply the learning gained on the programme. You will be required to write up your research according to an appropriate scientific framework for the method adopted, in a thesis of no more than 12,000 words.

What can I do next?

This MSc is intended to develop your expertise as CBT practitioners, supervisors or trainers through your involvement in a small-scale research project. You will be taught a range of research skills and will learn to use these competently through designing and conducting an empirical investigation under direct, one to one supervision. For example, you may develop expertise in a specialist area of CBT practice through the use of practice-based single case research design methodologies. Furthermore, this programme may serve as preparation for subsequent doctoral study, including the PhD in Professional Practice, also delivered at the Salomons Centre for Applied Psychology.

The master of science degree in school psychology is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists and prepares students for provisional New York state certification as school psychologists. Designed to provide students with a strong background in psychological foundations, the program develops professional skills and competencies in assessment, counseling, consultation, and program evaluation.

A school psychologist works with young children (birth to age five); elementary, junior high, and high school students; teachers and administrators; parents; and professionals to offer services that lead to the amelioration of existing student difficulties and attempts to prevent school problems. Through diagnostic testing, counseling, consultation, and intervention, school psychologists help students deal with learning and behavioral difficulties and help improve students’ adjustment to school and their community.

The master of science degree is awarded after students have completed all course work, an internship, and have passed a portfolio review.

Plan of study

A minimum of 66 semester credit hours are required for completion of the program. Before registering for the internship, students must pass a portfolio review. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above is required.

Admission requirements

To be considered for admission to the MS program in school psychology, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

- Hold a baccalaureate degree at an accredited college or university,

- Have a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0,

- Have completed at least 18 semester hours in behavioral sciences with a grade of B (3.0) or above,

- Have completed prerequisite undergraduate courses in general psychology, elementary statistics, child or developmental psychology, and abnormal psychology,

- Submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE),

- Submit letters of reference,

- Submit official transcripts (in English) of all previously completed undergraduate and graduate course work,

- Submit an essay outlining the candidate's goals and related experience that shows evidence of a professional commitment and the potential for developing effective relationships with children, youth, and adults,

- Complete an individual interview, and

- Complete an application for graduate study.

- International applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language. A minimum score of 580 (paper-based) is required. This requirement is waived for native speakers of English and those submitting transcripts from American universities.

All credentials must be submitted and reviewed before the student completes 9 semester credit hours of graduate work in the program. Applications are due by February 1. Later applications will be reviewed on a space-available basis.

MA in Behavior Analysis

Behavior analysis is a well-developed approach to solving social/emotional, behavioral, and learning problems for many different populations in many different settings. The M.A. program in Behavior Analysis focuses on the experimental, theoretical, and methodological aspects of the analysis of behaviors of individuals and how these behaviors denote different types of learning processes or problems. The processes at issue have become an efficient basis for understanding, and for changing, such behavioral disorders as are termed developmental disabilities and autism-spectrum disorders.

The program requires the completion of 36 credits, includes a thesis and is designed so that all requirements can be met within two years. The curriculum consists of 21 credits in basic courses in behavior analysis and experimental psychology, 9 credits in electives and 6 thesis preparation credits. Applications are accepted until August 1.

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. has approved the course sequence PSY 607, 651, 657, 658, 704 and 705 as meeting the coursework requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst Examination. Applicants will have to meet additional requirements to qualify for board certification.

The department

As a student in the Department of Psychology, you will undertake a survey of current knowledge and viewpoints about the science of behavior and cognitive processes. You will learn the research methods by which such knowledge is obtained, and be given the opportunity to study basic psychological processes, their development, the nature of behavioral aberrations, their treatment, and selected applications of this knowledge.

The undergraduate and graduate programs in Psychology encompass child and adult psychology, abnormal behavior, therapy, and psychological testing. The curricula explores the sciences of psychology—learning, perception, behavioral neuroscience, developmental processes, and normal and abnormal processes—and their practical application. In addition to classroom studies, you will gain hands-on experience at community youth centers, hospitals, human resource departments, and agencies that serve developmentally disabled children and adults.

Fully accredited by the American Psychological Association, the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program (Psy.D.), trains students who want to practice as clinical psychologists with a strong interest in traditionally underserved populations. In addition to mastering a rigorous core curriculum, Psy.D. students gain special competencies in two of four areas: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Assessment and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders, Interventions with High-Risk Families, and Serious Mental Illness.

M.A. in Experimental Psychology

In earning this 36-credit Master of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology you will strengthen your research, writing and critical-thinking skills while broadening and deepening your knowledge of behavior. The MTSU Clinical Psychology master’s program emphasizes a broadly based scientist-practitioner approach. The course of study offers preparation to pursue doctoral training or employment involving psychological assessment, diagnostic interviewing, and/or the application of behavior analysis principles. The skills training does not provide preparation to practice psychotherapy or professional counseling at the terminal master’s level. The curriculum and practica of the program are designed to meet certification requirements for the State of Tennessee’s Certified Psychological Assistant designation. In addition to the core requirements, the Clinical program offers training in three specializations: general clinical, health/neuropsychology, and applied behavior analysis. The psychology department has a limited number of graduate assistantships available, and a limited number of faculty have money for research assistants built into their grants.

It also allows students to establish a first contact with the rigors of academic research when working on the final project during the second year of the program, then being supervised by academic experts in the field.

In the first year of the program students take (day-time) courses over two semesters. There is also a field trip to Frankfurt, Europe’s financial heart, in which students are able to visit and learn more about the European Central Bank, the Deutsche Börse, and the Deutsche Bundesbank.
In the second year’s 1st semester there are evening courses, preparing students for the final written report of the masters’ degree. During the 4th semester of the program, students produce a final written report, which can take the form a dissertation, an applied project, or an internship.

The total number of ECTS is 120, of which 42 correspond to the final report.

ISEG's Masters in Finance has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program, offering 3 scholarships per year for the CFA exams. This status is granted to institutions whose degree program(s) incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), which provide students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit for the CFA exams.

All course units are fully taught and assessed in English.

The Master of Science in Banking and Finance is the flagship programme of the Luxembourg School of Finance. It offers a comprehensive curriculum encompassing both classic and more recent areas of the finance discipline as well as the principal functions of banking.

The cross-functional curriculum provides a dynamic framework of analytical skills and intellectual tools, providing an integrated approach to solving complex banking and financial problems.
In addition to a broad range of core courses, students may select one of two streams representing mainstream areas in which they can obtain a deeper knowledge.

Students study with the School’s permanent faculty. The diverse faculty, which maintain close ties to the Luxembourg banking and financial community, engage in leading research and advance banking and financial knowledge and practices on many fronts including market valuation of financial instruments, risk management and behavioral finance. In addition, a roster of invited professors from renowned finance faculties of other universities teach selected courses.

The full-time programme begins in October and finishes in June of every year, followed by an obligatory internship.
The part-time programme begins in September. Classes are generally held on Fridays and Saturdays (full days) twice per month during semester periods.
Degree

The MSc in Banking and Finance is a post-graduate degree offered by the Luxembourg School of Finance of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance.
