Assessment of a portfolio that demonstrates continuous professional development. Portfolios will vary, depending on your individual aims and aspirations, but may include: work with radio journalists / filmmakers, involvement in publication of the Birmingham City University anthology or magazine, evidence of contact with agents / publishers, building websites for aspiring writers.

Each module will result in a piece of writing that will be assessed. Your work will be critiqued by staff but you will also be asked to critique the work of colleagues and vice versa.

Admission to the course is based on talent. Applicants are asked to submit writing, published or unpublished. Students are selected on the basis of their work.

The aim of the Pg Cert/Dip/MSc Social Work in Mental Health/ Mental Health route is to achieve Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) training so that you can put yourself forward for AMHP status. This is achieved through the use of critical analysis, synthesis and reflective skills, both through study as well as practice. The course seeks to further the development of practitioners of mental health care by enabling them to become creative, innovative and effective practitioners. This programme is open to a variety of social workers and health care workers who currently engage with people with varying mental health needs.

Course overview:
The course is aimed at people who have 2 years post qualification mental health experience and wish to practice as an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) or existing AMHPs who wish to gain a Post Graduate Diploma or MSc in mental health, including a Higher Specialist award for registered social workers.

Lecturers are experts in mental health practice and education. The programme has a national reputation for delivering mental health teaching and modules offered include the deprivation of liberty safeguards.

Entry Requirements:
To access the course you must:
• Be able to demonstrate your ability to study at this level of learning
• Be two years Post Qualified as a; Social Worker, Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Psychologist

Course structure:
The Pg Cert / Dip / MSc Social Work in Mental Health /Mental Health is offered as a 2-year part-time degree programme. It is a part taught and part practice course that aims to integrate theory and practice, through work, supervision and reflection on practice.

The route consists of seven modules of study, five of which constitute the core (AMHP compulsory) modules. A further two modules complete the pathway.

Depending on the modules taken, the awards offered will vary. The schema below indicates this.
All modules have a minimum of 6 taught days at university and direct contact with tutors. The placements are divided into two blocks of 5 days for shadowing experience and a block placement of 45 days.

All placements are supervised by a practice assessor.

The law module has 10 taught days which is unique to the region and is welcomed by local partner agencies and employers. Study days have been built in the programme and you will be allocated a tutor for support throughout the programme.

You will be awarded a Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma on completion of 6 modules and a MSc Mental Health on completion of the whole programme.

The evaluation of the programme by students and external examiners in terms of teaching and learning and quality has, to date, been excellent.

Placements, Study Visits Available:
The programme offers you learning opportunities in a range of settings within mental health practice including community mental health teams, home treatments, hospital settings, forensic teams. Assertive outreach teams, children and adolescent mental health services and older adults.

Assessment:
Involves an assessment of both theory and practice.
Each module (or double module) is assessed as a ‘stand alone’ item. Practice assessment involves a triumvirate approach between the practice supervisor, you and the pathway leader. Competencies are identified for each practice module and you are assessed against these over a period of time. You are required to demonstrate "evidence" of competency through the compilation of a portfolio that also contains written work that is reflective of practice. The core theme of the assessment approach is about how you understand the use of theory to enhance practice and, indeed, to demonstrate personal growth and development. Assessment in the core modules follows a more traditional academic path but the link to practice is not lost. The themes of the assessment are also about aspects of practice. As you will be assessed academically for the core modules and clinically for pathway specific modules you will need to have a practice supervisor for your placement.

Further study:
These courses provides the opportunity for lifelong learning and the awards given on graduation forms the basis for progression into further study.

ASSESSMENT
An audit of professional practice leading to an action plan at the start of each module assignment, which will also be used with tutors to monitor and evaluate progress.

Assignments are designed to develop enquiry skills and critical reflection, through implementing actions, gathering workplace evidence and relating findings to relevant literature. Students are also expected to disseminate findings to colleagues in support of professional and organisational development, choosing an appropriate format.

FURTHER STUDY
Graduates of the course can apply to take further research study options. The faculty has a thriving research programme leading to MPhil and PhD. Knowledge, understanding and intellectual skills are acquired through a variety of practical learning and teaching approaches, these may include: formal lectures, interactive tutorial sessions, laboratory sessions, seminars, residential courses and directed independent learning activities.

Analytical skills are developed through coursework tasks that encourage creativity and problem solving using a range of systems and technologies relevant to commercial web service delivery. Group tutorial and practical work are also utilised in programme delivery. Learners are assessed both formatively and summatively by a number of methods.

Formative assessment occurs throughout the programme and involves feedback from peers and tutors and individual reflection. Feedback on work in progress is available prior to the submission of summative assessments.

A range of summative assessment methods are employed involving both individual and group assignments, written coursework assignments and practical project work, laboratory sessions, tests and examinations.

Summative assessment methods for all modules are identified in a module guide and, for coursework, assessment details and criteria are specified in each assignment brief.

As well as developing and applying skills through assignment work, the Research Methods module in the second semester introduces research skills in preparation for the dissertation. Independent learning is encouraged through research tasks for assignments and in the requirement to plan work schedules to meet deadlines for coursework submission.

Transferable and key skills are core to the learning strategy of the programme. We take an experiential and practice-led approach to Learning and Teaching, and opportunities to develop relevant employability skills are embedded throughout the programme. This programme will support you in becoming an active, autonomous learner through the teaching, learning and assessment process.

The emphasis is on interactive learning, including student-led workshops, role-plays and simulations to achieve deeper learning and understanding.

We use visiting teachers, field study visits and research-informed teaching to engage students with practical and topical issues. Appropriate modules are shared across courses, which helps to enrich your educational experience and allows you to encounter the perspectives, values and attitudes of students from other disciplines, which will be helpful in your future career.

Throughout the programme you are given the chance to practice surveying skills within an environmental context in order to develop transferable skills which will be valuable whatever your final choice of career.

Many modules are team taught, thus providing you with a wide variety of rich and diverse academic styles and expertise.

The programme encourages you to participate in activities and discussions which are hosted on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Moodle. All learning activities are supported both in teaching sessions and on the VLE. The VLE also offers interactive practice-oriented opportunities to test and apply your knowledge.

We expect you to attend all teaching sessions as well as to read and prepare before these sessions. Good preparation will enable you to get the most from your contact time and will help you become an autonomous learner. The programme focuses on the interaction between business and legal processes on property ownership and management. It integrates technological, financial, legal and management issues as they relate to property matters.

The theoretical underpinning of the course is rooted in real estate which stresses the need for interdisciplinary approaches and solutions.

This course will help you to connect the theory and practice of real estate to a range of real life case study challenges. Elements of the course are closely related to real-world scenarios. These build upon current practice issues identified through, for example, Parliamentary debates, revised planning documents and government guidance. We make significant use of professionals as Visiting Lecturers to ensure both continuing professional relevance and that you have direct access to people in current professional practice.

Every student on the programme is allocated a personal tutor and our students are invited to both group and individual meetings throughout the year. We provide set times (known as office hours) during the week where academic staff are available to see students, and staff also frequently arrange to see students by appointment outside these times if additional help or support is needed.

We invite you (normally by making individual appointments) to discuss assessment feedback/feedforward with the marking tutor to ensure that the detailed comments provided are supplemented verbally, and that they are understood, so that you can use comments to enhance future submissions. We collaborate closely with the Centre for Academic Success which offers workshops, individual advice sessions and small group tutorials to all University students on a variety of subjects including use of English, study skills, maths and other technical topics.

The MA Education is designed to meet the needs of teachers, lecturers and trainers who are keen to extend and enhance their professional qualifications and expertise. It is a highly flexible programme enabling education practitioners to study on-site at the university as well as in the workplace. Taught modules can be combined with flexible and negotiated modules to accredit a wide range of professional knowledge and development.

Please note that completion of this course does not lead to qualified teacher status (QTS).

KEY FACTS
• Intended for those working in all education sectors, including early years; primary; secondary; further education; and higher education; the MA Education is also relevant to those in work-based training environments or those with a general interest in education.
• The programme is open to those without a Bachelor’s degree providing you have relevant professional experience.
• You will gain a recognised qualification which may be used towards meeting continuing professional development (CPD) requirements.

ASSESSMENT

Some modules offer a choice of assessment methods, including a written account, a portfolio plus a written account and the opportunity to develop materials to disseminate findings.

Practice and research-informed learning, teaching and assessment strategies emphasise problem solving, team working and wider appreciation, with functional and procedural knowledge framed within this broader context.

The course will include problem-based enquiry and learning using the environment as an integrative setting, encourage the demonstration of key competencies within a professional, vocational context driven by engagement with practice and prepare you for a future in which the ability to think and change will be key skills.

Broadly speaking, the teaching strategy moves from staff-led during the early stages of the course to student-led towards the end. The early part of the course is intended to provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to understand how the spatial planning system operates and the need to embed the environmental services lens in processes in order to connect planning across different sectors, land uses and scales. This is achieved through staff-led lectures, seminars and workshops.

Later stages of the course are designed to develop your critical and reflective capabilities and make the links between the various spatial dimensions of planning, and between spatial and non-spatial policy intervention. The emphasis is on interactive learning, including student-led workshops, role-plays and simulations to achieve deeper learning and understanding.

We use visiting teachers, field study visits and research informed teaching to engage you with practice and topical issues.
