Why Study Food Integrity and Innovation with us?

This course is unique in the UK and is fully supported by the BBSRC Modular Training Programme.

The three modules represent the subject areas identified by market research work with industrial food supply chain industries. Furthermore, the subject areas are interrelated, and have common themes such as the application of nanotechnology. This will provide a comprehensive platform for improved industrial performance and an opportunity to obtain a recognised academic qualification.

The transferability of the academic credit will allow for further upskilling and postgraduate qualifications to be achieved.

What will I learn?

The content of our modules has been selected to address key issues relating to agri-food security, sustainability and integrity of the food supply chain. These are areas that are not only within the BBSRC remit but also considered a priority within the European Union Horizon 2020 programme.

How will I be taught?

This course is classroom based with some practical laboratory work. Each module will be delivered intensively over three days.
There are around 36 hours of contact time per module, grouped into three days, then one hour of remote contact time. You will also be expected to undertake 200 hours of private study per module.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be made through:
- written coursework
- project presentations.

This Masters in Cardiovascular Sciences will include specialist training in the epidemiological nature of the disease, in combination with analysis of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie its development.

This flexible course focuses on the molecular and genetic factors of human diseases. Understanding those factors is crucial to the development of therapies. Core modules cover the fundamentals. You choose specialist modules from the pathway that interests you most. We also give you practical lab training to prepare you for your research project. The project is five months of invaluable laboratory experience: planning, carrying out, recording and reporting your own research.

Recent graduates work in academic research science, pharmaceuticals and the biotech industry.

Teaching and assessment

Lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory demonstrations, computer practicals and student presentations. Assessment is continuous. Most modules are assessed by written assignments and coursework, although there are some written exams. Two modules are assessed by verbal presentations.

You’re assessed on written reports, laboratory practical classes and group and individual assignments, which may involve oral presentations. There is a written examination at the end of each module with an original research project for the MSc and a library-based project for the Diploma. The course is intended to provide students with a detailed understanding of the sustainability issues associated with Northern European agriculture, and is underpinned by an extensive programme of agri-environment research at Harper Adams.

Having completed the MSc you will be able to identify farming systems and determine their key characteristics, and critically evaluate the environmental impacts of conventional, integrated and organic farming systems. You will also learn to assess and exploit the latest developments in technology, and produce integrated farm management solutions that pay due regard to agronomic, social and environmental requirements.

The course

The continuing production of safe, wholesome food in an environmentally sensitive manner is a major political issue for national governments and internationally within global commodity markets. A report produced by the UK Cabinet Office in 2008 (Food Matters: Towards a Strategy for the 21st Century) predicts that the global population will rise to 9 billion by 2050 rising from a current estimate of nearly 6.8Bn. This increase in population size will substantially increase the demand for food. The global estimates vary in magnitude, but it is thought approximately 25% of crops are lost to pests and diseases, such as insects, fungi and other plant pathogens (FAO Crop Prospects and Food Situation 2009)

In a 2009 response to the emerging issues centred on global food security, the UK BBRSC launched a consultation exercise entitled Future Directions in Research Relating to Food Security. In seeking responses as to the direction of future research BBSRC identified a number of key themes. These included the:
■ Translation of research into commercial practice and the creation of effective partnerships to enable exchange of knowledge and development of skills in the uptake of new scientific findings
■ Establishment of require long-term programmes in research and training, underpinned by investment in the agricultural research infrastructure
■ Focus on applying the latest science to increasing crop and animal productivity globally while minimising negative environmental impact (including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the efficient use of water, energy and other inputs, conserving biodiversity and landscapes), reducing losses from pests and diseases, enhancing food safety and quality for improved nutrition, and reducing waste throughout the food supply chain.

This course is intended to provide students with a key understanding of the issues involved in the sustainable production of food in accordance with the themes outlined above and is underpinned by an extensive programme of associated research at Harper Adams.

How will it benefit me?

The course provides an overview of the key issues involved in sustainable agricultural production within a global context. Since there is a focus on the underlying scientific principles, the course is suited to students of all nationalities in addition to those from the UK. Initially, you will learn to identify global farming systems and determine their key characteristics, before undertaking more complex evaluations of conventional and integrated or organic farming systems. You will undertake training in the use of the latest resources and use these to produce global integrated farm management solutions that pay due regard to agronomic, social, economic and environmental requirements. You will also have the option of undertaking a case study module where you will be able to focus exclusively on farming system of relevance to your background or intended career destination. The research project will provide training in the design, execution, analysis and interpretation of appropriate experiments or surveys to address research questions or problems relevant to sustainable agriculture.

The course promotes the importance of an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to studying fundamental physiological aspects of human health and disease, including diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease, by combining cutting-edge physiological and metabolic methodologies with relevant molecular biology approaches.

Course overview

The course is ideal for:

 students with a background in physiology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, biology, nutrition, exercise science and other related disciplines
 those with work experience in health-related research
 health and exercise professionals.

It investigates the physiology underlying health and disease – a growing area of interest to academic, private and public sectors – and aims to:

About the School and its staff

The School of Life Sciences, with its unique, high-quality expertise and excellent facilities, is one of the UK’s leaders in research into integrated physiology.

The programme is delivered by staff from the Metabolic Physiology Group. The group has an international research standing in the area of human nutrition, the control and integration of fuel utilisation in health and disease, such as in obesity and diabetes, and the regulation of muscle mass during exercise, inactivity and disease. The group is funded by industry, research charities and research councils.

In recent years, the School has undergone an impressive development and refurbishment programme. Research is conducted in a suite of human physiology laboratories; ex vivo pharmacology laboratories; neuroscience laboratories and a human primary tissue culture laboratory.

These facilities allow integrated metabolic investigations in both patients and healthy individuals to dovetail with relevant modern molecular biology technologies.

Students also benefit from our interactive, multidisciplinary approach to teaching and research alongside colleagues in other schools and clinics based in four regional hospitals: the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham City Hospital, Derbyshire Royal Infirmary and Derby City General Hospital.

Assessment

The course requires students to accumulate 180 credits as follows:

 Autumn – three core taught modules (50 credits)
 Spring – five taught modules (80 credits)
 Summer – research project (50 credits).

Assessments are held either at the end of a module or the end of a semester and take the form of an exam, laboratory report or essay.

The research project is assessed through a 15,000-word dissertation and a viva voce.

This programme concentrates on understanding the molecular principles underlying the biology of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts. In particular we study gene expression and regulation, gene transfer, genome structure, epidemiology, cell communication, and pathogenicity and virulence factors.

The MSc programmes in Biology & Biochemistry are designed for students who wish to specialise further in a particular field or wish to change direction from their first degree (in a related area).

We study, in particular, mechanisms of microbial pathogenicity and host plant defence in temperate and tropical species, cell and molecular biology of pollen-stigma recognition and signalling in flowering plants, plant hormone and G protein signalling pathways, genomics and gene networks, and molecular biology of stress responses in the important tropical crop cassava.

Developmental biology is the science of the processes governing the growth and development of organisms. Read more
Developmental biology is the science of the processes governing the growth and development of organisms. This programme focuses on the fundamentals of developmental biology in a range of vertebrates, including studies of the genes and molecules that control cell growth, differentiation and morphogenesis that give rise to tissues, organs and individuals.

The MRes provides a unique mix of taught components, extended laboratory projects, literature reviews and preparation of a grant proposal based on a research dissertation. It gives students an insight into a range of state-of-the-art research activities and techniques, and provides generic, transferable skills training needed for all early stage researchers. The programmes also address the scientific, ethical and commercial context within which the research takes place.

All of the MRes programmes can be studied as the first year of our Integrated PhD programme.
