Bath Spa University has a long tradition of Teacher Education dating back 60 years. Newton Park was officially opened as Bath Teacher Training College in 1950 and the University is now the largest provider of Teacher Education in the area. Each year we recruit a diverse group of around 500 prospective teachers to a wide range of programmes in Teacher Education, leading to the award of either the Postgraduate or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, both with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Highly rated by Ofsted

The quality regulator Ofsted awarded Bath Spa University Grade 1 'Outstanding' for the overall effectiveness of our programmes leading to qualified teacher status in primary and secondary education. The Ofsted report praises the Teacher Education programme at the University, noting its “extremely good reputation”, its “very clear and well-articulated philosophy, which has the needs of learners at its heart”, the “outstanding” school-based elements of the training, and the fact that the training and assessment are “universally highly regarded”.

Teacher Education Programme

The programme has been planned and developed in partnership with schools and settings to provide high calibre new teachers to work in the 21st Century education system. Together, the University and partnership schools and settings support the development of new teachers and enhance the quality of the teaching profession. We offer PGCE programmes in:

- Primary and Early Years (3–7 age phase)
- Primary and Early Years (5-11 age phase)
- Primary and Early Years (7-11 age phase)
- Secondary (11–16 age phase) in the following subjects Art & Design; Computer Science with ICT; Design and Technology; Drama; English; Mathematics; Modern Languages; Music; Physical Education; Religious Education; Physics with Maths; Science/Biology; Science/Chemistry; Science/Physics

Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses

We run pre-Teacher Education subject knowledge enhancement courses, which are designed for graduates who are interested in teaching a secondary priority subject but who may not necessarily have a degree in that subject. The courses will help you identify your individual training needs and top up your subject knowledge in areas that would be difficult to address on your own. They run prior to the Teacher Education programme and vary in length depending on the subject, which include modern languages, mathematics and physics.

Transnational Writing sits within the subject area of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University and within Bath Spa’s newly formed centre for Transnational Creativity. We’re a pioneer and leading provider in the teaching of creative writing. We’ve just been recognised by the top consumer body in the UK as ‘the leading course in Creative Writing in the country’ (Which 2016).

This exciting new field of creative inquiry develops the artist’s capacity to respond creatively to the world. The course brings together creative writing, spoken word and creative research. We’ll encourage you to conduct extensive fieldwork at home or abroad and you’ll be able to tap into our vibrant network of international partner organisations.

We’ll encourage you to conduct extensive fieldwork at home or abroad and you’ll be able to tap into our vibrant network of international partner organisations.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course introduces the concept of transnational research and creativity, exploring its application as a mode of cultural production. It considers engagement with other art forms, approaches to creative writing, fieldwork and a diverse contemporary context of international creative expression as the basis of research.

Activities such as writing exercises, field trips, visiting tutors from our international partners and workshops will form the core of the first half of the programme. In the second part of the programme you’ll undertake an extended period of self-directed creative research, giving you the freedom to develop expertise in your own craft and to attempt the production of a substantial piece of creative work to a publishable standard.

MODULES

In Module 1 you will use your own experience of people, places and environment as a source and inspiration for creative writing. This module sets the foundations for independent study and is designed to give you a real sense of what writing from experience in the field is about.

In Module 2 you will gain an overview of the key ideas and processes associated with transnational writing and research. You’ll prepare further for independent study and work on establishing a research plan for your six-month creative project.

In Module 3 you will carry out a creative project, working closely with your supervisor. You can submit your project in a variety of formats. This includes a novel, a collection of stories, a short film, poetry, a spoken word performance or an action based portfolio.

For more information on modules please go to our website: https://www.bathspa.ac.uk/courses/pg-transnational-writing/

The course is low residency, with residential periods at Corsham Court campus.

The learning process will involve a variety of forms of interaction, study and experience including master classes, workshops and creative labs. During workshops, tutors and students present core material with the expectation of lively interaction and designated group discussions.

The low-residential aspect of this MRes equally allows you the time and freedom to research your own points of transition, to write from place, between places and people, while fitting the requirements of the course around your life.

Do you have aspirations of becoming a writer, director or producer? We’ll help you develop the skills necessary for a career working in the film industry.

Delivered at our Production Hub at Paintworks in Bristol and our Newton Park Campus, we provide an environment which nurtures and inspires creative vision, including storytelling. You’ll also have access to the University’s postgraduate campus at Corsham Court.

Oscar winning producer, Lord David Puttnam, contributes to the teaching of the programme in the form of a customised module.

COURSE STRUCTURE

We teach you how modern filmmakers work, alongside offering practical experience. You should graduate with:

• A range of professional contacts.

• A showreel.

• The knowledge to get ahead in the film business.

You’ll create a portfolio detailing your preparations for the delivery of a short moving image production. This project could take the form of a short narrative film, documentary, animation, music video or digital marketing strategy.

We’ll encourage you to make your proposed project, however, your success in academic terms doesn’t depend on you completing your project during the course. Research based practice is an equally valid form of study.

For more information on the course structure please go to our website: https://www.bathspa.ac.uk/courses/pg-independent-filmmaking/

MODULES

This course consists of five modules:

In Development, you will be introduced to experienced filmmaker teams who give case studies on how they developed and produced their films. You'll attend workshops and lectures with guest speakers from across the industry.

In The Philosophy of Film David Puttnam will draw upon his own distinguished career as a filmmaker to discuss the philosophy of film, the grammar and the language of film through critical and practical analysis.

In Pre-Production, you'll attend workshops on script development, casting, budgeting/scheduling, relevant software, locations and contracts/legals. You'll also develop your pre-production folder.

In Film Lab (an optional module), space is created for students to develop and workshop their work for TV or film based work around cold reading of their respective scripts within the group.

In Transnational Cinema (an optional module), you'll explore films in theory and practice.

In Creative Project, you'll complete a moving image related project e.g. short film or animation, with the option of completing a written practice-focused dissertation, discussing context, audience, avenues for distribution or other relevant subjects.

TEACHING METHODS

You’ll be taught through a combination of intensive workshops and seminars. The programme is designed to build on your previous filmmaking experience and current professional practice.

ASSESSMENT

You’ll be assessed in a variety of ways, including scriptwriting, production folders and either a written practice based dissertation or film project.

To receive a Master’s degree in Independent Filmmaking you’ll need to demonstrate via coursework a detailed understanding of the process by which moving image productions are made and have a portfolio of project work that shows a creative mastery which matches your grasp of Independent Filmmaking. Your final mark for the production module will depend on the creativity and originality of your work, as well as your demonstrated ability in your role.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

We’ll equip you with skills across a number of technical and craft areas – lens, digital, sound, and lighting. You’ll graduate in a suitable position for further postgraduate study, such as a Bath Spa PhD programme, or portfolio careers in the media and digital production sectors of the economy.

*New for 2017, subject to final approval.

Develop your own signature sound and production style, through this forward-thinking, cutting edge music composition and production course. The MA Sound Production programme is tailored towards individuals who are keen to hone their composition and production skills inside an intertextual and cross-disciplinary framework that pushes at the stylistic boundaries of genre.

The content will cover aesthetic considerations as well as technology and techniques utilised in modern music making. The award is deliberately unbounded by genre and there are opportunities to take an interdisciplinary approach to sound production, including contemporary electronic music, studio and field recording, experimental music and sound design for composition.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The programme encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative working methods with students from the wider music community at Bath Spa, as well as visual media and other departments within the University. While the programme has a music production focus, it also covers key areas of practice such as:

• Sound design

• Electronic music composition

• Soundscape and field recording

• Traditional studio practices

• Sound engineering

• Spatial audio and sound design

• Composition for visual media

You won’t be expected to cover all of these areas. You’ll be able to use the course to develop an individually-tailored portfolio of skills, experience and top-level work across them.

The course is part of a suite of courses available across music and sound, operating alongside ‘sister’ pathways in Sound Design and Sound Arts, which allow further specialism in these areas.

For more information on the 'sister' pathways please refer to the website: https://www.bathspa.ac.uk/courses/pg-sound-production/

MODULES

In trimester one, you'll gain the skills you’ll need to fulfil the rest of the course. The Skills Portfolio module is built on the idea that you’ll already have technical skills in this area. It therefore allows you to choose a handful of skills projects from a large number of options – these cover skills right across the Sound Arts, Sound Design and Sound Production pathways and include (optional) elements of multimedia.

The Research Methodology and Context module develops skills in postgraduate-level research and writing. It is designed to give you the tools for an onward journey in academia, but not to be, in the colloquial sense, ‘academic’.

In trimester two, you’ll advance the knowledge gained in the the first trimester and begin exploring the intertextual possibilities of music composition. In addition, you’ll develop a creative project that will further extend the work undertaken on the trimester 1 Skills Portfolio module.

The module Intertextuality In Sound Production aims to capture and contextualise emerging trends and innovation at the forefront of sound production and composition, and develop composition skills that extend beyond the limits of genre.

Alongside the Sound Production modules there are additional optional modules that you can study from the other pathways. From the Sound Arts pathway, the Visual Music module explores the idea that musical thinking can be extended to the visual, and encourages students to develop multimedia projects that explore this idea. From the Sound Design pathway the Post Production module explores an industry-level workflow for audio post production for picture.

In trimester three, you'll complete the course with a independent research project. While most Masters level courses consist of a substantial written dissertation component, the MA Sound Production programme focuses more on high-level practical work and the concept of ‘practice as research’ through the creation of a large-scale practical project.

The project will fulfil the same function as the traditional dissertation; you’ll develop individual and original research, but through the creation of a portfolio of works, rather than through the written word.

For more information on modules and course structure please visit the course webpage: https://www.bathspa.ac.uk/courses/pg-sound-production/

TEACHING METHODS

Most modules are taught through small-group seminars and workshops, where you’ll benefit from close interaction with tutors and peers. The Major Project and parts of the other modules are taught through individual tutorials where the focus will be entirely on your own practice.

ASSESSMENT

You’ll be assessed entirely on coursework. The majority of this will be practical and creative work, including the dissertation-equivalent Major Project. Some practical projects are accompanied by short informal written assignments, and the for the Research Methodology and Context module you’ll produce a more substantial paper.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

You can use the course to develop an individually-tailored portfolio of skills. This will equip you for the current employment landscape, where a combination of traditional music roles are required alongside broader practice in sound and other media. The course also provides the breadth necessary for FE and HE teaching in the field, and provides the basis required for PhD research and beyond.
