The MSc (by Research)

The MSc (by Research) admits any student with a Bachelors degree or higher in a science or social science subject, of the required standard, to study in science-facing aspects of Geography. This is a research degree, leading to presentation of a thesis and, if University conditions are met, graduation with an MSc degree. Full-time students must study for a minimum of one and maximum of two years to obtain this degree.

This, along with the Master of Arts (by research), provides experience of advanced research but without the commitment to a minimum of three years study required at the outset of a PhD. Because it is a 'science' degree, it is suitable for students with a science or engineering background, including physical geography.

Many of our students choose the MSc route as a means of helping them to decide if a PhD is for them or not. Others use the MSc as a means of gaining the further qualification necessary for progression in their career. Finally, some choose the MSc simply because they want to research something that has always interested them, aided and guided by experts in their chosen field of research. The emphasis is very much upon independent but supervised research. All students have at least two supervisors, who will guide students through to completion of a substantial piece of work which must be original, significant and contain publishable material. Along the way training in generic and subject-specific skills will be provided by the Department, Faculty and University, together with careful monitoring and assessment of progress.

This course is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3).

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Accredited MSc graduates who also have a BEng (Hons) accredited for CEng, will be able to show that they have satisfied the educational base for CEng registration. It should be noted that graduates from an accredited MSc programme, who do not also have an appropriately accredited Honours degree, will not be regarded as having the exemplifying qualifications for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council; and will need to have their first qualification individually assessed through the Individual Case Procedure if they wish to progress to CEng.

Programme Content

Food Sciences on the Viikki campus is a nationally unique programme that covers the whole food production chain from primary production via food processing to consumers. Food Sciences is an internationally appreciated field of education: food research at the University of Helsinki has been highly ranked.

Your masters' studies in food sciences will enable you to make an impact on the the creation of innovative solutions for the whole chain of food production. You will:
-Study the theory and applications of the broad area of food sciences in lecture courses and in group work.
-Increase your knowledge of food composition, processing, structure, and legislation.
-Deepen your knowledge of how the reactions of different food components, production processes and packaging affect the structure, sensory quality, healthiness and safety of animal and plant based foods.
-Learn laboratory working skills.

Selection of the Major

You can affect the sort of expertise you would like to gain. You can tailor your Master’s degree by choosing special studies in food chemistry, food technology, and in the science and technology relating to meat, dairy and cereals.

You can also complement your expertise in food sciences with, for example, studies in food development, food safety, food research and analysis, economics, marketing, sustainable food production, microbiology, biotechnology or nutrition.

The Department of Geological Sciences is designed to foster high-caliber student research that will lead to publishable results. The master's degree is intended to prepare students for a job in industry or for entrance into a PhD program. The doctoral degree trains students for work as government research scientists, industry research scientists or academic scientists.

Research activities in the Department of Geological Sciences are far-reaching and often interdisciplinary. A major focus of the department is earth surface processes, including biogeochemistry, geochemistry, geomicrobiology, and sedimentology. Other research areas include climate change, energy and environmental processes, environmental geosciences, experimental geology, and petrology.

The Department of Geological Sciences has research center affiliations with the Center for Integrated Watershed Studies, Materials Science Program, and is in development of projects with Basin Analysis Research Center. Through these strong research collaborations and projects graduates of the Geological Sciences programs have gained employment as geologists in federal programs such as NASA, Sandia National Lab, and US Geological Survey; and in private energy, environmental and mining companies such as Conoco-Phillips, Resource Env. Management, Inc, and SECOR International.

The Master of Science degree is a two-year program in which the student concentrates on graduate level course work during the first year and on thesis research during the second year. The majority of students in the masters program have completed a bachelors degree in the geological sciences, but students with bachelors degrees in chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics or engineering are also encouraged to apply.
Our Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Geological Sciences is intended to prepare students for a job in industry or as a stepping stone to a Ph.D. degree either at Binghamton or another university. M.S. students typically take a year of coursework followed by a year of research that culminates in a publically-defended thesis. Students are encouraged to submit their thesis in the form of a publication-ready manuscript.

No background in science or technology required

Prospective students do not require background knowledge in technology or science. Of more importance is your affinity with the social aspects of technology. Students with backgrounds in areas other than law can apply if at least 90 ECTS of the courses in their bachelors were similar to those of the bachelors at Tilburg Law School. A premaster program (currently only in Dutch) is available for students who do not meet this criteria.

Course details

During this one year programme you’ll be expected to complete four 30-credit modules and eight teaching observations. As a full-time trainee you’ll be committed to a Monday to Friday week of academic and professional study, consisting of two full days per week of on-campus study, two days per week of professional practice placement (arranged by the University) and one day per week of independent study and research. You’ll work closely with your colleagues on the programme, learning together and from one another, with peer-support an important part of the programme organisation and learning. Your teaching observations will be carried out by University tutors and subject specialist mentors in an atmosphere of professional evaluation and support.

This is a high quality course aimed at imparting advanced knowledge across a broad range of Computer Science and offering training in advanced skills. It is suitable for those who wish to enhance their computing skills in order to improve their contribution to IT-related industry or to pursue R&D in academia or industry.

A student following the Advanced Computer Science course chooses two from about a dozen themes, each of which combines two related course units that build on top of each other. Certain combinations are integrated into specialised 'pathways' . A student who opts to follow the pathways will have the pathway specialism included in their degree certificate.

Teaching and learning

Computational thinking is becoming increasingly pervasive and is informing our understanding of phenomena across a range of areas; from engineering and physical sciences, to business and society. This is reflected in the way the Manchester course is taught, with students able to choose from an extremely broad range of units that not only cover core computer science topics, but that draw on our interdisciplinary research strengths in areas such as Medical and Health Sciences, Life Sciences and Humanities.

About the course

The MSc Molecular Biology will give you hands on practical experience of both laboratory and bioinformatics techniques. You will also be trained in molecular biology research strategies. A strong practical foundation is provided in the first semester (Semester A) when you will study two modules:
-Cellular Molecular Biology - This module aims to help you develop a systematic understanding and knowledge of recombinant DNA technology, bioinformatics and associated research methodology.
-Core Genetics and Protein Biology - This module will provide you with an advanced understanding of genetics, proteins, the area of proteomics and the molecular basis of cellular differentiation and development.

The second semester (Semester B) has a problem-based learning approach to the application of the knowledge you gained in Semester A. You will study two modules:
-Molecular Medicine - You will study the areas of protein design, production and engineering, investigating specific examples of products through the use of case studies.
