The MA offers an opportunity to enhance research skills to advance employability in the tourism or aviation industry. It is offered as a one year full-time and two year part-time course.

During the course you will adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the study of tourism and aviation management, by drawing upon international case study material, to understand the global operations of both the tourism and aviation sectors. The course seeks to exploit synergies between the tourism and aviation industries to critically inspect the management-related issues, which is a key strength of the course structure. The MA is taught by an experienced team of academics, all with a background in either tourism and/or aviation management. Many of these staff are extensively published and are asked to speak at events and conferences throughout the world.

Course detail

There are several practice based features of the course, in addition to research for the dissertation. These may include guest speakers from industry, use of industry relevant briefs, field work, trips and visits, which can be used to inform teaching, learning and assessment.

The MA International Tourism and Aviation Management course seeks to provide a research-practice and enquiry element, introducing the philosophies, principles and practices of research. You will be required to produce a 15,000 word thesis, which should be topical, student centred and contain an element of original thinking. The MA International Tourism and Aviation Management is a course that suits students wishing to further apply their research skills and contribute to existing debates in tourism and or aviation management.

The Master's programme in International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship seeks to prepare aspiring individuals for a managerial career within either the tourism or aviation industry. The course offers the opportunity to interpret and assess trends and changing management practices within the tourism and aviation industry. In doing so it widens career opportunities and the possibility of movement between the two sectors. The mode of study is full-time - studied over 18 months and the internship component is completed after all taught modules have been passed.

You will be expected to undertake a total of 1,200 hours of planned full-time work experience or internship in a tourism or aviation organisation. Normally this will equate to 30 weeks spent with your internship employer completing various work related roles and tasks and completing the various guided learning activities required as part of your programme. The University does not guarantee an internship and you will need to be proactive in finding what might be considered a suitable intern position. To prepare you for the internship one assessed module: Organisational Behaviour in Theory and Practice is incorporated within the course.

Aerospace engineering is an area where demand exceeds supply. As a highly skilled professional in aircraft maintenance engineering, you will be well placed to gain employment in this challenging industry. The aircraft industry is truly international, so there is demand not only in the UK, but throughout the world.

Careers available after graduation include aircraft maintenance planning, engineering, materials, quality assurance or compliance, technical services, logistics, NDT, method and process technical engineering, aircraft or engine leasing, aviation sales, aviation safety, reliability and maintainability, operations and planning, airworthiness, technical support, aircraft surveying, lean maintenance, certification, production planning and control.

Assessment methods

You will be continually assessed coursework or a mixture of coursework and exams. The dissertation has three elements of assessment: a thesis, a poster presentation, and a viva voce examination.

The aerospace industry has become increasingly competitive and in recognising this, the University has recently invested £1.8m into its aerospace facilities.

Facilities available to our students have been fully approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). With access to an EASA-approved suite of practical training facilities, our students can use a range of industry-standard facilities.

Our Aerospace Centre is home to a Jetstream 31 Twin Turboprop aircraft, assembled with Honeywell TPE331 Engines and Rockwell-Collins Proline II Avionics. It has a 19-passenger configuration.

The EASA-approved suite contains training and practical workshops and laboratories. Each area contains the tools and equipment required to facilitate the instruction of either mechanical or avionic practical tasks as required by the CAA.

Students use the TQ two-shaft gas turbine rig to investigate the inner workings of a gas turbine engine by collecting real data and subsequently analysing them for engine performance.

Our sub-sonic wind tunnel is used for basic aerodynamic instruction, testing and demonstrations on various aerofoil shapes and configurations.

The single-seater, full motion, three axes Merlin MP521 flight simulator can be programmed for several aircraft types that include the Airbus A320 and the Cessna 150.

This multidisciplinary system creates major challenges that call for improvements of their capabilities and skills in developing and managing effectively and efficiently their respective domains.

In order to respond to these challenges, MSc program in International Air Transport Operations Management (IATOM) is developed. It is jointly offered by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of HKUST, in partnership with Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile (ENAC), which is currently the largest aeronautical university in Europe and the only aviation-oriented university in France offering a wide and complete panel of aeronautics-oriented degree bearing programs and continuing & professional education programs, serving the aeronautical world, and particularly the air transport sector.

Upon graduation, each student shall receive a joint institutional Master of Science in International Air Transport Operations Management (MSc IATOM) degree certificate from ENAC and HKUST. Since the IATOM degree is accredited and recognized by the French Ministry of Higher Education, a separate certificate recognized by the French Ministry of Higher Education will be issued by ENAC.

This is an exempted program under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance in Hong Kong. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognize any qualifications to which this program may lead.

Program Objectives

Master of Science in International Air Transport Operations Management aims to equip those who want to enter the positions for versatile managers, air transport professional or to enhance the knowledge of those who have already been working in the sector.

This program combines the technical, economic and managerial skills that are specific to air transport which will improve and enhance the capabilities of students supporting engineering work for the aeronautics and air transport. It will allow students to get exposure to the various core aspects of air transport and how they are integrated with the technology development in the real world.

Curriculum

In order to graduate with the 2-year MSc(IATOM) degree, each student has to complete total of 120 ECTS (i.e., equivalent to 60 HKUST credits), including the 30 ECTS (i.e., equivalent to 15 HKUST credits) of internship.

Students are required to complete the first term at HKUST in Hong Kong (HK), the second and third terms at ENAC in Toulouse (TLS), France, and then a 6-month internship in the air transport industry in the last term. In order to start the third term at ENAC, each student has to complete 60 ECTS (i.e. equivalent to 30 HKUST credits).

1st term at HKUST (18 HKUST credits / 36 ECTS)
Students are required to take at least 9 credits of foundation courses in the first term at HKUST, to fulfill the graduation requirement. The remaining credits can be taken from the foundation or elective courses. Subject to the approval of the Program Director, students may take a maximum of 9 credits of MSc courses from outside the following course lists offered in School of Engineering.

The master program Aeronautical Management provides an interdisciplinary insight into the aviation systems, i. e. airlines, maintenance facilities and legislational authorities. Applicants have to be graduates of bachelor study programs in aviation systems.

Study program

The master program Aeronautical Management provides an interdisciplinary insight into the aviation systems, i. e. airlines, maintenance facilities and legislational authorities. Applicants have to be graduates of bachelor study programs in aviation systems.

The master program will prepare the candidates for positions in leadership within airline industry, air transport and governmental institutions

The program provides up to 15 places for applicants

Admission and Tuition Fee

The total tuition fee is 8,500 EURO *. Fees include tuition fees for all lectures and seminars, registration, examination and graduation fees, contribution to the student union, course materials (student manuals and handouts).

The fees do not include living expenses and health insurance. Regulation for payment:

A non-refundable fee of 1,000 EURO at acceptance of the applied enrolment.
EURO 3,750 at the beginning of first semester
EURO 3,750 at the beginning of second semester.

*plus ~ € 315 study fee per semester (includes free usage of public transportation in and around Bremen and Lower Saxony)

The master program addresses candidates graduated by an bachelor degree due to the following qualifications:

Graduates of the International Degree Course in Aviation Systems Engineering and Management (ILST).
Pilots with a related degree and practical experience.
Graduates with an acceptable degree in related areas like aircraft engineering, maintenance, or air traffic administration plus a practical experience.

Fluency in English is required. Students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency with the TOEFL exam (minimum of 220 points computer-based or 560 paper-based) or an equivalent test like the IELTS (at least 6,0). The complete application documents must be submitted not later than August, 31st. Applications must consist of: a registration form, a Curriculum Vitae, a photograph, proof of his or her university degree, the address and telephone number (e-mail address, if available) to which all correspondence should be sent.

International Support

The international students can profit from services offered by the International Student Assistance (ISA), a service for international studens of the IGC, providing tutorial support, help with visa applications, regular social and cultural activities and gatherings, a pick-up service from the airport or train station plus an accommodation arrangement service. This service is free of charge and highly recommended for students from abroad.
