This MSc comprises 180 credits – 120 credits of taught modules and the final project of 60 credits. You must pass an Induction Workshop, then pass the three core modules of 15 credits each. You will then choose 5 electives of 15 credits, before taking the final project for 60 credits.
You will begin the MSc Airport Management with the Induction Workshop, which is assessed by completing a 2,500 to 3,000-word piece of individual coursework, serving as the final acceptance assessment for the MSc Programme.

In today’s world, to be commercially successful in drone applications, you must be safe and operating totally with the aviation law. That’s why the programme includes a specialist module on UAV Operations and the Law. Not only will you know the legal and regulatory framework, more importantly you will learn how to interpret it so that you can design complex and challenging UAV operations within the current legal and regulatory framework.

UAV Technology and Operations: This will teach you the basics of the technology at systems level. As part of this module you will learn to fly UAVs under experienced qualified instructors, first on simulators and then out in the field.
Drone Construction: You build your own multi-rotor drone, complete with flight controller, GPS systems and radio control system. Under the guidance of the teaching team, you will test and then fly your drone in a series of increasingly demanding exercises.
Research Methods: In order to obtain your masters degree you will have to undertake an individual research project and write it up as a dissertation. In this module you will learn the research, presentation and critical appraisal skills you will need to successfully complete your project.
Advanced UAV Technology and Operations: Practical flying and operating experience, now in more advanced scenarios, is an important element of this module with further simulator exercises and another 5 full-day flying sessions.
UAV Operations and the Law: It is important to know the legal and regulatory framework within which UAVs operate, to become qualified for commercial UAV use it's essential. Here you will learn about the law, the guidelines and get to practice your understanding with 'moot' exercises – debating complex operational scenarios.
Optical Measurement and Sensing: Of all the data gathering devices carried by UAVs the overwhelming majority are optical and to get the best results you will need to understand this technology. It's not just video cameras; you need to fully understand technologies including stereo photogrammetry, LIDAR, structured light and shape from motion systems if you are to be effective in data gathering from drones.
Dissertation Project: On successful completion of the taught part of the programme you will complete an individual research or advanced practice project. Project topics can be self-generated, or drawn from a range of real-world applications originating from outside of the University among the research team’s industrial contacts.

The formative assessment programme is designed to ensure tasks are aligned to modules learning outcomes.

Our part-time blended learning MSc Occupational Medicine course provides an overview of the whole spectrum of medicine and hygiene within the workplace.
The course is aimed at GPs who want to gain an academic qualification in occupational medicine and doctors already working in the field - especially in specialist training posts - who want to prepare for professional exams with the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM).
This MSc is also suitable for doctors in other disciplines who have an interest in occupational medicine.
You will benefit from access to a range of specialist knowledge and resources within occupational health and examine the evidence on which occupational health practice is based.
The course takes place in a research-enriched environment and, for those progressing to the third year of the MSc, you will have the opportunity to undertake research-based activities relevant to occupational health, including formulating a research question, designing and executing an appropriate study and drawing valid conclusions through writing a dissertation.

This course aims to provide you with the information required by medical practitioners working in the field of occupational medicine, and to allow you to pursue an academic qualification in this subject.

Compliant course content
This course adheres to the syllabus requirements of the FOM, RCP (London) and RCP (Ireland).
The course comprises a blend of specially commissioned written materials in electronic format (PDF), together with interactive teaching material, all delivered via the University's virtual learning environment, Blackboard.
In Year 1, you are required to attend in Manchester for a one-day seminar associated with Module 1 in Month 3, and the same for Module 2 in month 5 for September starters, in Month 6 for April starters and for one exam day in Month 10.
You are allocated to tutorial groups for Modules 4 to 8, each supported by a specialist in occupational medicine. Tutorials are delivered via telephone or web conference.
In Year 2, you are required to attend in Manchester for a four-day practical course in Month 5 and for one exam day in Month 10.
In Year 3, you are required to attend a three-day MSc dissertation course held at the University in Month 1.
Some components of the course are held jointly with students on the MSc Occupational Hygiene course.
All taught course units will be assessed via examinations held at the University at intervals throughout the course, and the third year will be assessed via submission of a dissertation.
Assessment is by eight examination papers, one per course module. The first will be sat at Seminar 1 (Year 1, Month 3) and the second at Seminar 2 (Year 1, Month 5 for September starters and Month 6 for April starters). The remaining Year 1 assessments will be sat in Month 10. For Year 2, assessments will be held in Month 5 and 10.
If you wish to proceed to the MSc, you are also required to complete a third year, during which you will attend a mandatory three-day residential course (in Month 1) and prepare a dissertation. For doctors in approved training posts, the dissertation may also be eligible for submission for the MFOM.

The MSc Hazard and Disaster Management course will develop knowledge, technical skills, interpersonal and management skills, and experience. You will study a range of hazards using examples from the UK and other countries. This will provide you with the experience to assess risks and vulnerabilities from desk-based research, laboratory and field situations, consider hazard management and disaster risk reduction strategies, develop emergency plans, and critically review the concept of resilience along with techniques for its development.
You will consider the dynamic and multi-faceted nature of disasters and examine a range of aspects pertinent to the operational, political and socio-cultural issues involved in disaster relief, including aspects of international law. The course will ensure a sound working knowledge and experience with one of the mostly widely used GIS platforms, extensively used by many planning authorities, GOs and NGOs, and you will develop valuable skills in the acquisition and processing of spatial datasets with a wide variety of disaster management applications, along with the ability to visualise and depict spatial information.
Opportunities for study on residential field courses will include the use of field simulations either in Finland or in the UK, and the opportunity to examine environmental hazards and evaluate management strategies on an overseas residential field course. Currently, the field course takes place in Italy or Greece, to examine volcanic, seismic, landslide and tsunami hazards.
The Disaster Management course is designed in a modular format and will be offered on a full and part time basis. Delivery will be mixed-mode, with a combination of traditional lectures, practicals and distance learning with supporting tutorials. For full time students, study will take place over 14 months, and for part time students, study may typically take two to three years.
The MSc Hazard and Disaster Management begins with a two week Summer School in August, where you will meet other students, academic tutors and visiting experts. You will:
You will undertake a field course simulation training exercise, which will focus on survival skills. You will reflect on the experiences of victims of disasters, develop decision making through active participation and it will orientate you to the type of experiences that you may encounter in a disaster field situation.
After the summer school, lectures and self-directed learning will take place in the Autumn and Spring terms. Teaching and training will also include fieldwork within the region as well as the option for overseas residential fieldwork.
Study will utilise a range of diverse learning approaches and activities to acknowledge the rich and diverse character and content of the body of knowledge that forms this Master’s degree course. It will include:
Each week, lectures and practicals will take place. This normally involves seven to 10 hours of class contact timetabled within two days of the week. In addition, through the week you will be engaged in distance learning tutorials and activities, background reading, and working on a wide range of assessments. Some weeks will also have additional field or simulation time. For a full-time course, a minimum of 37 hours of study time per week is expected.
The course will also require attendance at a Summer School (two weeks), on another overseas residential field course (about ten days), and will also provide options for other extended field- or work-placements.
