We recognise that our students are busy professionals and have taken this into account in the design of our programmes and assessments. Study on this programme is extremely flexible and you can opt to join the course on a full or part time basis, enabling you integrate your learning with your full time professional role.

University-based study includes taught sessions scheduled late afternoon (4pm to 6pm) and conference style days scheduled on occasional Saturdays.

A blended learning approach ensures you can usually study at a time to suit you and all modules are supported by online study resources with additional guidance available through face-to-face or virtual tutorials.
To keep on top of your study, you should be prepared to work between five and 10 hours per week (evenings and weekends). The practical applications of the course may involve the integration of study with your professional activity in school or college.
During your studies you will have access to LJMU learning resources including our libraries for independent study. You will be allocated a personal tutor to support your academic and professional development and will also receive guidance via email.

Taught sessions mostly take place at the IM Marsh campus, four miles outside Liverpool centre, although some sessions may take place in the city.

The IM Marsh campus has independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library with relevant stock and study spaces, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities, a cafeteria and shop.
The campus library, open 8am to 11pm, houses the main collections linked to this course and you will also have access to the 24 hour, city centre Aldham Robarts and Avril Robarts libraries.

Teaching Young People with Special Educational Needs (Core)

Develops understanding of special educational needs and disability through engagement with current theory, research, policy and practice and their application.

Social Emotional and Mental Health Dificulties (Core)

Explores current educational theory, research and policy relating to SEMHD and the implications for professional setting.

Specific learning Dificulties (Core)

Investigates current educational theory, research and policy relating to ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia and the implications for professional practice.

Year 2

Researching Professional Practice (Core)

Provides an introduction to a range of research methods applicable to educational contexts, with a focus on practitioner enquiry, and how to develop a research project proposal and plan.

If you work with children with developmental disorders in education, health, psychology or social services or even if you’re a parent with appropriate qualifications, this programme will give you an insight into these complex disorders and how to support the children who have them.

You’ll focus on four major development disorders in children: Dyslexia, Developmental Coordination Disorder (often known as Dyspraxia), Attention Deficit Disorder and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. You’ll consider the evidence regarding the nature, diagnosis, assessment and intervention of each disorder – including the controversies that surround them – guided by leading researchers in the field.

We don’t promote any particular method of assessment or management. Instead, we look at the available evidence in education, health or the home, and allow you to focus on the models that relate to your own context.

Research insight

You’ll be taught by members of the Childhood and Youth Academic Group, which has a long-established, international reputation for research in developmental disorders. The course distils the expertise within the team and draws on research that we have conducted, funded by agencies such as the ESRC, Action Medical Research, and private and charitable UK organisations that work with children with these disorders.

We offer students a vibrant intellectual and academic experience. Not only will you benefit from weekly research-led teaching, but you’ll have the chance to attend seminars with leading academics, hosted by the School of Education or other departments.

Exemptions

You can use the credits gained from this programme towards MA Special Educational Needs, meaning you’ll need to take fewer modules to achieve that qualification.

Course content

You’ll take a single module in each semester, allowing you to focus on individual developmental disorders in depth.

You’ll consider the concept, nature and characteristics of Dyslexia, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

In addition, you’ll take a critical approach to understanding how each disorder is assessed and identified. In addition, you’ll consider how they’re managed in different contexts, allowing you to focus on the environments that are most relevant to your professional or personal interests.

Learning and teaching

This programme is taught in evening sessions. Each module will include twelve lectures lasting two hours each. Weekly taught sessions will include lectures, discussions and group tasks so you can share knowledge and experiences with your fellow students and tutor. If you need to discuss aspects of your studies individually, the course tutor is available for one-to-one tutorials.

Assessment

There are no exams on this programme, and modules are assessed by coursework only. You’ll complete a 6,000 word essay for each module to demonstrate your understanding of the topics under study.

Why study for Master of Education at Dundee?

The Master of Education programme is essential for all professionals who work in an educational setting and wish to enhance their professional learning and improve career progression prospects. Students can tailor the educational experience to suit their individual experience, needs and interests. Who should study this course?

Entry to the programme is open to teachers and professionals with experience of working in educational settings who have a degree or equivalent and relevant experience. Applicants do not have to be currently employed in an educational setting. There is option for a non-workplace based route through the MEd programme as some modules do not require students to be in a workplace-based setting.

What are the aims of the programme?

The programme is designed to develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and professional values necessary to enhance international professional practice and builds upon competences developed through experience.

How you will be taught

The start date for this course is either September or March each year.

Study support is offered through our growing network of learning and study centres. Currently these are based at the University of Dundee but shortly will also be available through our collaboration with the Hellenic Association for Education in Athens, Greece.

Recognition for prior learning (RPL) is available for the MEd Programme. Claims for RPL must match to existing modules o the programme with equivalent content and be at the required SCQF level and SCOTCAT credits. What you will study

Participants undertake two core and two optional modules, and either 1 x 60 credit, or 2 x 30 credit workplace projects at the final stage of the programme. There are modules available by distance learning or mixed mode delivery. The Master of Education is characterised by progression through Certificate, Diploma to Masters with exit points at each level.

How you will be assessed

Individual modules have assessment tailored to aims and content of each module. Most module culminate with a written assignment based around content covered, or research completed, during the module.

Formative and summative assessments are designed to arise naturally from study and work. Major assessments focus directly on application in the workplace. Students are assessed on 4 x 30 credit modules plus a Workplace Based Project (60 credits).

Careers

A majority of students studying for Masters in Education at the University of Dundee are already in full time employment. In addition a number of students either already hold senior management positions or have moved into senior management positions during their time studying on the programme. By engaging with the MEd Programme students are able to influence their own Professional Learning journeys and take control of their own CPD.

As the Master of Education programme is for professionals with some teaching or educational experience the programme will not qualify you to teach in Scotland.

This programme is mainly aimed at qualified teachers who want to gain a deeper knowledge of special educational needs (SEN) to develop effective teaching and learning strategies.

You’ll choose whether to focus on SEN issues in England or internationally so you will either study areas such as inter-agency working under Every Child Matters or how SEN provision compares between different countries. You will expand on this knowledge when you choose from our optional modules, allowing you to focus on topics that interest you or are relevant to your career.

You could study developmental disorders and inclusive provision, and you’ll benefit from sharing the ideas and experiences of teachers from around the world as well as the local area. This programme will give you an understanding of the latest concepts approaches to effective, inclusive approaches, while equipping you with the skills to analyse the evidence that informs them.

Course content

From the start of the programme, you’ll build your understanding of the context of SEN education. You’ll complete one core module, allowing you to focus on SEN provision within England and worldwide, and consider issues such as inclusive education, how schools and local authorities interpret national education policy, and the ways that SEN provision differs between countries.

This lays the foundations for the rest of your studies, which will allow you to choose from a range of optional modules. You could focus on developmental disorders, or complete a directed study on a topic relevant to your interests and experiences.

Throughout the year, you’ll develop sophisticated skills in research and analysis that you’ll apply to your critical study – an independent piece of research you’ll submit by the end of the programme, on a topic of your choice which may be related to the needs and priorities of your school.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

Whatever your topic, you have your first supervisor in Art Psychotherapy and may have your second in another department – ArtEducational StudiesPsychology, or Sociology, for example.

You meet your supervisors regularly for discussion and guidance, and present your work to the Art Psychotherapy research student group.

This programme, which is suitable for graduates working in educational settings, will enhance and develop your knowledge of a range of learning difficulties, enabling you to gain a deeper understanding of special education needs (SEN) and inclusion. There will be opportunities to reflect upon the importance of early identification of need as you enhance your awareness of how to recognise the indicators of a range of special educational needs. These include dyslexia, autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties. Effective strategies to improve intervention will also be considered and related to your practice, underpinned by reflection upon a range of literature and legislation, as you gain an enhanced appreciation of how inspiring practice can support and augment the learning of those with special educational needs.

What will I study?

The course comprises two modules, one studied per semester, which explore the provision of inclusive education for those with special educational needs.

You will consider the dilemmas arising from everyday practice, examine UK policy as well as national and international legislation, and reflect upon the range of learning difficulties within your own setting.

How will I study?

The programme will be delivered through a blended learning approach that consists of one workshop per module and supported online learning through the use of the University’s virtual learning environment (VLE).

Additional sessions will be available via Collaborate, an academic virtual classroom, to enhance the online learning experience. Academic tutors will also offer guidance on the development of your practice-based research.

How will I be assessed?

The programme is assessed through two reflective portfolios. These will include practice-based assessment tasks and a critical reflection of 2,500 words.

Who is it for?

Our graduate-entry courses allow graduates with a first degree from disciplines other than healthcare to gain a pre-registration health qualification in two years as opposed to the usual three to four - providing a fast-track route into health.

Academic facilities

Speech and language therapy students have access to specialist labs and equipment such as ultrasound and laryngographs to help them understand speech production and audiological equipment when learning about hearing and deafness.

The Roberta Williams Speech and Language Therapy Centre, opened in January 2016, is our specialist speech and language therapy clinic. The Centre contains state-of-the-art equipment to enable staff within the Division of Language and Communication Science to deliver cutting edge research and services to patients.

Moodle is an enhanced Virtual Learning Environment which provides students with access to online course materials, resources, interactive activities, assessment and communication tools and is a key element of our blended learning approach, combining face-to-face teaching with online activity.

Teaching and learning

The MSc in Speech and Language Therapy is a very intensive programme which requires full time study by attending lectures, small-group problem-solving sessions, practical classes and tutorials. You will also have access to the most up-to-date equipment in the Speech Acoustics Laboratory and innovative online learning materials. On clinical placements you will benefit from the supervision of a qualified therapist.

Modules are assessed through a diverse range of assignments and examinations. Your clinical progress will also be monitored by supervising clinicians.

During the MSc Speech and Language Therapy course you will learn about the foundations of speech and language, about how children learn to talk and about disorders that affect communication. A number of subjects equip you for the analysis of speech, language and hearing difficulties, such as phonetics, linguistics and audiology. You will also develop research skills and the ability to apply evidence based practice. You will undertake weekly and block clinical placements in both years of the course.
