Career prospects

Employers are increasingly looking for economists who are highly financially literate and can tackle a wide variety of economic problems. This Master’s specialisation will provide you with the skills and academic knowledge required to become a professional in the domains of auditing, accountancy, controlling and financial management/consulting. It will teach you to use your analytical skills to find the shortest route to the best solution and to take the consequences of possible actions into consideration before making a decision.
Our graduates therefore have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to work in financial positions for audit firms, management consulting firms, financial institutions, large and medium-sized businesses, as well as for government and not-for-profit organisations.

Job positions

This Master’s specialisation is a step in the right direction towards professions as:
- Chartered accountant / Certified public accountant (Dutch = registeraccountant)
- Chartered controller / Business controller (Dutch = registercontroller)
- Management consultant
- Financial advisor / Financial officer

Our approach to this field

Particularly, but not exclusively, this Master’s specialisation provides students with the latest knowledge in the disciplines of accounting information systems, management accounting and control, financial accounting and governance, auditing, organisational learning, strategy management and corporate finance.

Our approach to the field of accounting and control resembles those of the London School of Economics and of the Copenhagen Business School, two universities known for their multidisciplinary and critical view on risk management. Like these prestigious universities, we believe in a broad theoretical basis. We therefore start by teaching our students general economic theories that include not just the mainstream theories but also unorthodox ones that provide a well-rounded perspective to contemporary economics.

The Economics Department at Radboud University is also known for its unique approach of focusing on the social and institutional aspects of the various topics that are taught. We teach our students a pluralistic view, showing how figures can influence people’s perception of a company and therefore also demonstrating the power and responsibility that comes with these professions. It’s important to understand that accounting can aid management but also that it is much more than just a tool, as it can influence behaviour. This needs to be understood not only by accountants, but also by future controllers, auditors and financial managers and advisors.

Designed to equip those working within or intending to join the internal audit profession with the conceptual understanding, knowledge and skills to contribute positively to the organisations that they work for, our Internal Audit Management and Consultancy course will help to develop you into a director, manager or consultant in today's challenging but rewarding audit sector.

Close ties with the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors UK & Ireland (IIA UKI) and accreditation from the Internal Auditing Educators Partnership program from the IIA Inc. ensures our course is fresh and relevant.

Our course is designed to enhance your skills and train you to become a qualified internal auditor, manager and head of department. Past graduates have gone on to work with high-profile organisations, including Cancer Research UK, the Department of Work and Pensions and Royal Bank of Scotland.

With the drive across the globe for integrated reporting to increase transparency, increased regulation such as the introduction of the Sarbanes Oxley Act in the US, and the general publics access to real time information, boards and their audit committees are ever more in need of independent and objective assurance and internal audit has a vital role to play in providing this.

What's covered in the course?

This course covers not just the operational aspects of internal auditing, but also the strategic and tactical. It considers internal audit’s role in many key risk areas that organisations face, such as ethics, CSR and sustainability, and examines how internal audit can influence an organisation and be a catalyst for change. It also looks at innovation within an organisation and specifically for internal audit, and you will have the opportunity to complete a research project of your choice relating to the field.

We encourage your communication and confidence with active learning methods, such as group work, seminars, debates and quizzes. The assessments are designed to mirror an internal auditor’s working life as far as possible, and many students comment on how this has helped them improve their skills at work.

Why Choose Us?

-We are an established team with over 20 years’ experience of delivering courses accredited by the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and the Internal Auditing Educations Partnerships (IAEP).
-We now boast a Route to Chartered Status from the IIA UK.
-The Centre prides itself on its extremely high pass rates.
-The lecture team is supported by guest speakers, who regularly visit to provide valuable practitioner insight.
-We get to know our students as individuals and support their specific needs, or signpost them to other areas of the University that can provide additional, complimentary support.
-The delivery is flexible so you can choose full-time or part-time with block release and distance learning as options. This means you can fit your studies alongside work and personal commitments.

Course Structure

Our course is available to study in a range of options, ensuring you don’t have to miss out.

Full-Time
You can choose to study one year full-time or three years part-time, with qualifications achieved at the end of each year:
-Term / Year One – Postgraduate Certificate
-Term / Year Two – Postgraduate Diploma
-Term / Year Three – Master’s (MSc)

Distance Learning
This course is also offered as a distance learning option, enabling you to study at a time that suits you. You don’t have to attend any face-to-face sessions, and delivery of course materials is done through our e-learning platform, Moodle. Each module with an exam has a revision day which, although not mandatory, you should highly consider attending. If you can’t make it, supporting materials are made available via Moodle.

If you’re an international student, you can sit your examinations at your British council offices for a fee payable locally of around £100 per examination.

Block Release
This option sees you attend intense face-to-face teaching on campus from Monday to Friday for each module, one a term for years one and two. In year three the block weeks take place in the first term for both modules in order to support early initiation of your research project.

This option also provides the flexibility to incorporate some distance learning, to accommodate your work and personal commitments. You can do this at no extra charge and with no penalties.

Assessments
All modules are tested by assignment, except for
-Organisation environment risks and controls which has an assignment and a 27 hour test to be completed remotely
-Organisational Leadership which is a closed book exam
AND
-Professional Innovation and Development which is a presentation (which can be done remotely over Skype, for example) and reflective diary

Employability

There are planned field trips each term to local organisations. These trips will be accompanied by a seminar from a visiting professor on a related topic.

We also have a guest speaker programme, bringing the working world into the University. These talks are delivered in the block weeks, and presentations are posted on Moodle so that they are available to everyone.

All assignments are grounded in the real working organisations, allowing students to apply their knowledge into a real working environment.

Skills assessment takes place at the start of each term and students are encouraged to create a development plan to enhance their skills and work experience over the duration of the course. Lecturers will support students in finding opportunities to support this wherever possible.

Why take this course?

Forensic information technology (FIT) is the scientific use or application of information technology (IT) in the generation and presentation of digital evidence to be used in courts, legal or other formal proceedings.

This course will enable you to develop your understanding and application of security issues and cybercrime for the purpose of forensic computing and investigation.

What will I experience?

On this course you can:

Learn how to investigate hacking, fraud and deception using a range of digital forensic tools
Practise identifying intruders' trails and suspected inappropriate use of internet applications in order to compile scientific evidence to prosecute
Manage a real-life computer engineering project using appropriate techniques for writing and reasoning about security policies

What opportunities might it lead to?

Many police investigations or civil disputes involve investigation of computer systems, mobile phones or other information devices, and there are an increasing number of UK companies that undertake investigations as consultants. You can expect to find career opportunities in such companies as well as in law enforcement and other services.

Accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the further learning academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP). This course also partially meets the academic requirement for registration, either as a Chartered Scientist (CSci) or (on behalf of the Engineering Council) as a Chartered Engineer (CEng)*.

*On condition that the Master's Engineering Project is successfully completed.

Module Details

You will study four key topics which will collaboratively develop your knowledge and ability to carry out forensic IT investigations as well as an introduction on how to build protected specification software for data and other web applications. You will also get to build your own test system as part of your final project.

Here are the units you will study:

Computer Forensic Investigation and Cryptography: This unit covers the practical aspects of conducting a forensic investigation of digital evidence. In order for the students to develop a critical understanding of computer forensics, a holistic approach of the forensics investigation process is adopted, with a full investigation ‘life cycle’ from seizure of evidence through to giving evidence in court as an expert witness. We look at a range of tools, operating systems and devices.

Computer Security: The unit provides an introduction to computer security concepts and their practical application, in both closed and interconnected networks. Students are expected to both understand and be able to critically evaluate different approaches to securing complex computer systems.

Cybercrime Security and Risk Management: This unit provides opportunities for participants to develop skills and knowledge in the understanding of corporate cyber threats. Drawing upon a range of practical examples, students will examine how rapid technological development and expansion in access to the internet has impacted upon crime (e.g. how anonymity and unfounded trust encourage deception), mapping out the terrain of information technology, and identifying the emerging areas of cyber crime. Areas explored will include the crossing of established boundaries into spaces over which control has already been established such as cyber-intrusion and cyber-theft, but also 'new cyber crimes' in the form of virtual trespass, Denial of Service attacks, and the development of opportunities for offending in the context of social networking websites.

Master's Project: You will undertake either an engineering unit or a study project, during the summer period. The project offers students the opportunity to apply the taught material in the solution of a real-world problem directly related to their course. The engineering project usually involves building a piece of software to solve a problem. An example of the sort of thing you might do would be building a tool to address a specific forensics requirement. The study project usually involves undertaking a study of an IT domain relevant to forensics. To prepare for this the project includes a number of preparatory sessions, which contribute to part of your final mark.

Specialist optional units include:

Systems, Security and Data Analysis: The first part of the unit provides an overview of computer organisation, operating systems and network design, with a strong focus on security considerations and aspects relevant to computer and digital forensics. The early part of the unit will provide an introduction to relevant issues in system architecture and file system organisation. Threats to computer systems will be considered. The first half of the unit is concluded with studying in some depth current technologies for securing real computer networks. The second part of the unit deals with the important topic of data analytics.

Advanced Programming Skills for the Web: This unit draws together a number of system development skills, focusing on how they can be applied to the development specifically of web applications. Topics covered include web programming, connecting databases to web applications, software tools, testing and security.

Programme Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of practical exercises, simulations, lectures, guest lectures and formative assessments, and will be expected to use a wide range of on and offline learning tools.

You will encounter a range of assessment styles depending on the content and nature of the unit topic. This can include written assignments, presentations as well as group and individual lab-based assessments. However, the most significant assessment element is the final dissertation, which reports and reflects on your final project.

Student Destinations

On completing this course, you will be equipped to seek employment in the following areas: IT auditing, information security, independent investigation, Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and law enforcement agencies. Some of our previous graduates have been successful in finding employment within high-tech crime units, commercial investigation and national security bodies, while others go on to further research study at PhD level.

This course will also appeal to already practising professionals in related areas such as law enforcement, system administration, corporate security, IS auditing or security analysis and management for the commercial sector.
