The MA History of Design and Curatorial Studies curriculum offers practical and theoretical instruction in researching and displaying interiors and design objects such as furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and works in other media. New courses on curatorial studies and courses exploring the history of design in social and cultural context reflect the program’s broadened scope and relevance. They can also study abroad or pursue their degree at Parsons Paris, benefiting from our relationship with Musée des Arts Décoratifs, our partner museum.

Hands-On Experience

Students complete the 42 required credits in two years of full-time study or three to four years of part-time study. At the renovated Cooper Hewitt, graduate students have opportunities to curate exhibitions, create programming for the public, and produce interpretive materials — all of which provide essential hands-on experience in museum and curatorial practices. Access to the Smithsonian’s Design Library, New School library holdings, and the library consortium enriches object-based research.

This prestigious two-year master’s degree program, which Parsons offers in conjunction with Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, brings an object-focused, practice-based approach to the study of European and American decorative arts and design dating from the Renaissance to the present. Housed for more than 30 years at Cooper Hewitt — the only U.S. museum devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary design — the program enables students to work directly with the museum’s collections and its curators, conservators, educators, and designers.

Support for Broad Research Horizons

For-credit internships enable students to explore professions in museums, auction houses, and galleries and on new online platforms. Also available are a limited number of master’s curatorial fellowships at Cooper Hewitt, which provide partial tuition remission, as well as tuition support from the Lee B. Anderson Memorial Foundation, whose mission is to support programs that advance the understanding of and appreciation for the decorative arts. In addition, MA students can apply for paid teaching assistantships. Parsons’ School of Art and Design History and Theory (ADHT) programs reflect the faculty’s expertise in areas including art and design methodology and philosophy, design criticism, cultural anthropology, sustainability, and material culture and are designed to provide students with opportunities to take related courses within ADHT. This 10-month program focuses on the analysis of contemporary art work and the understanding of evolving demands of the art market in a global context. The techniques of management, communication, marketing and the knowledge of law and regulations contribute in providing the expertise required when working in the field of contemporary art.

Based in the heart of Paris, on the premises of IESA Art & Culture, students are within easy access to all the major Parisian museums, auction houses and contemporary art galleries. Class visits to the most prominent contemporary art museums, galleries, and auction houses are organized to allow students to dialogue with curators, art historians, and gallerists.

Study trips to art centers in France are organized during each semester to allow students to network with seasoned professionals in the art sector.

Structure

The program consists of 3 trimesters:

2 trimesters of classwork (Oct-Dec/ Jan-March) and a trimester dedicated to internships (April-June) allowing students to gain professional experience (Jan-March).

During the last two trimesters, students will work on a personal project to be presented in front of a professional jury in order to validate the certificate.

Each trimester contains 200 contact hours over a 10-week period. Courses are taught in English.

Students are attributed a mentor for personalized coaching and will follow group methodology sessions to guide them in the research and development of their personal project.

1st trimester:

The History of the Contemporary Art in Europe and United States; the Economics of the Contemporary Art Market; Art Law; Art and Project Management; Communication and the Marketing, Research, Development and Management of Artistic projects (content, business plan, legal structure, communication, marketing); visits and workshops with professionals.

2nd trimester:

Hands-on Experience in Curation

In collaboration with the Parsons Paris Gallery and partner programs or institutions, graduate students regularly undertake curatorial projects throughout their education. While developing exhibitions, students gain experience working in teams, putting theoretical and historical knowledge into practice, and dealing with both conceptual and practical issues in curation. After a range of experiences during their first year, graduate students are invited to undertake and manage a collective exhibition. This project will serve as a culmination of their studies and provide them with the extensive experience needed to enter the professional world of exhibitions, galleries, museums, and other cultural venues.

New York and Paris: Two Cities, a Common Campus

The MA in History of Design and Curatorial Studies is also offered in New York, in partnership with Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. This interdisciplinary program provides an in-depth study of modern and contemporary art and the market from the mid 19th century to the present day. Led by an expert faculty, the integrated program combines study of art history with the role played by external factors in the art industry. The program explores how the art market has intersected with modern and contemporary art practices as art works have changed hands, setting precedents for both institutional and private collectors. The program puts particular focus on the development of connoisseurship skills through object-based learning and investigative cataloguing and writing in combination with the study of current art business practices and the market. Students study art works first-hand at sites of production and exhibitions throughout New York City and beyond. The core pedagogical strategy for the Christie's Education, Art, Law and Business program is based on the premise that utilizing the lens of commerce and law to view art and the art market will serve to enhance our understanding of how the global art market functions. Through this non-traditional approach to the study and examination of art and art markets, students will develop uncommon insight into the dynamics that influence markets.

Our program goal is the training of students across the three disciplines of art, law and business resulting in graduates who are equally conversant in art and in commerce and who, therefore, will have the necessary transferable skills to make a smooth professional transition into the global art world. The MA Fashion Studies at Parsons Paris is the first master's program in its field in France and one of only a handful worldwide. In this groundbreaking 42-credit program, students explore the production, dissemination, and consumption of fashion from both historical and contemporary vantage points. The program investigates the different segments and meanings of fashion as creative and multifaceted industry – from haute couture to fast fashion; as a phenomenon dealing with identity, race, and gender; as an everyday act of consumption; as a material object; as an image; and as an artistic practice.

By situating fashion as a manifold phenomenon, the program casts light on the relationship between practice and theory as students explore the interdisciplinary theories and methodologies that have shaped the field of fashion studies while also discussing their applications within the fashion industry. The program also challenges students to engage with contemporary concerns such as sustainability, fashion curatorial practice, globalization, technological innovation, and digital fashion futures.

Core and elective courses open up broad perspectives on fashion and its connections with design, production, consumption, imagination, representation, embodiment, and identity. Finally, as fashion studies is inherently interdisciplinary and multi-methodological, courses examine fashion through the perspectives of anthropology, sociology, art history, gender studies, visual and material cultural studies, and film and media studies.

Paris and Access to Fashion

With Paris as a backdrop, the program brings students in contact with the European and French fashion industry and its cultural fields of production. Students are invited to engage with the industry through lectures and master classes held by fashion practitioners; special projects with fashion brands (mainly Paris based); visits to European and Parisian fashion trade fairs like Première Vision-Paris; unparalleled access and visits to fashion houses and ateliers; and the most prominent fashion and textile collections and archives in France, from the Musée Galleria to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The program also assists students in applying for internships with established and independent fashion brands during Paris Fashion Week and during the summer break while also encouraging them to independently observe Parisian streets, neighborhoods, and retail environments critical to the fashion system.

This two-part programme is designed to develop professional and academic excellence in the field of contemporary curatorial practice. It's aimed at curators and those with related academic and practical experience who wish to achieve professional excellence in their practice, to innovate in the expanding field of curatorial practice.

MFA Curating at Goldsmiths focuses in-depth on aesthetic, social, political and philosophical questions that are brought to bear in any place or at any event in which contemporary art is situated.

The programme is designed to provide a practice-led research context for students at any stage of their professional practice. 

It also enables you to experiment and innovate in the expanded field of curatorial pedagogy, to collaborate on an interdisciplinary basis and extend your and other students' knowledge through this process.

Goldsmiths' MFA Curating programme is recognised worldwide for producing highly qualified curators and other arts professionals.

Our graduates find employment in top international museums, commercial galleries, auction houses, magazines, alternative spaces and not-for-profit organisations. Work experience

In Year Two, intensive workshops look in depth at a set of artistic and cultural themes chosen by the students. In Year Two you further develop independent curatorial research and practice, working either on your own ideas or with a London-based gallery or institution. The summer term of Year One acts as a transition to Year Two.

Government Art Collection

The M.Phil. in Irish Art History provides an exciting programme exploring a range of key aspects of the history and analysis of Irish visual expression from pre-Christian to Contemporary art and architecture. The course is designed both for graduates of art history and for those from other, cognate, disciplines. While focused on art and artists in or from Ireland, the imagery, objects and structures are all explored within international and interdisciplinary contexts, as the course is intended to provide graduates with a range of transferable analytical and practical skills that can be applied within other cultural environments. A particular advantage of this course is the accessibility of a wide range of relevant art objects and structures in, and in the vicinity of, Trinity College as well as extensive library and archival resources. Since its establishment ten years ago, the course has attracted applications from all over the world. Many graduates have continued on to undertake Ph.D. research in Trinity and in other universities internationally, while others have taken up posts in museums, galleries, and auction houses as well as in cultural media.

The course offers general introductions to Irish art and architecture as well as a more specialized focus on selected periods and themes. It provides students with a critical understanding of the analysis of works of art within their cultural contexts, and an appreciation of the range of works created in Ireland over time. A core dimension of the course will involve exploring the concept of 'Irishness'. Through engagement with museums and galleries in Ireland, students will also have an understanding of a key curatorial issues of relevance in the development of exhibitions and collections, including the technical opportunities which the digital age offers to curators and art historians. In addition to taking compulsory core modules, students choose a number of electives, which allow them to build specific skills and to follow their individual interests. Students are assessed on the completion of a range of coursework assignments, including essays, critiques, and research exercises. The capstone of the course is a dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words on a topic selected by the student, and carried out under the supervision of a member of staff in the Department of History of Art and Architecture or the Irish Art Research Centre (TRIARC).

The Master in Arts Management is divided into two operational modules, characterised by a distinct course of study in relation to the city in which it takes place, each involving an examination and a final project. Some of the subjects of the course cut across the modules, while others are specific and unique to each location.

The Master is held in partnership with the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, the MIBAC (Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities) in Rome and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

At the end of the course, students will be ready to work in arts and cultural companies and institutions (e.g. museums, foundations, galleries, festivals, auction houses), in the so-called cultural sectors (national and international cultural institutions, profit and nonprofit), in areas related to contemporary art and with large enterprises investing in the cultural market (banks, insurance companies, banking institutions, event management companies, trade fair organisations, art foundations, exhibition production companies, or companies operating in the communication world).

FLORENCE - Design of exhibitions and events
The Florence module focuses on developing specific skills to manage the different organisational phases of a Cultural event: from the design to the identification of partners and sponsors, to communication management and content creation. As a group, with the support of teachers and the course coordinator, students will plan and create one or more cultural events with real clients.

ROME - Art Direction: focus on festivals
The goal of this module is to develop a new approach to artistic heritage management. The Master’s semester in Rome combines the huge culture that the city plays at international level with the vivacity of the backgrounds that characterises its urban culture. With the support of new technologies, students will explore possible cultural convergences that stimulate interest and participation.

VENICE - 1 week Workshop
In partnership with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, students will participate in a one-week workshop in Venice. They will visit the main institutions and meet the professionals of the Peggy Guggenheim.
The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of the most important museums in Italy for European and American art from the first half of the Twentieth century. It is located in the home of the famous collector Peggy Guggenheim, at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal in Venice.

It is expected that MLitt dissertations should make a contribution to some aspect of the subject. The dissertation is 15,000 words in length (including footnotes but excluding bibliography) and will be an in-depth critical exploration on a topic chosen in consultation with the tutors and the programme convenor.

Through object-based, interdisciplinary research, this Masters programme focuses on the act of making and everything that entails. We study studio practices from a variety of disciplines, their materials and techniques, but also intentions and concept. We examine art technological sources to register the artist’s voice, and other testimonies on artistic practice, make reconstructions of historical recipes and modern techniques to understand practices, ageing and its consequences as well as other changes artworks go through. Researching this all-inclusive story of an artefact is known as technical art history. It is an exciting and rapidly growing field involving (technical) art historians, scientists, conservators while also reaching out to other disciplines such as economic and social history, history of science, anthropology and aesthetics.
