Our unique programme thrives in the heart of London's international art scene, offering unrivalled access to works of art and professional practice. Working with both twentieth century and contemporary art, you will move between the lecture and seminar room and gain first-hand experience of exhibitions, auction previews, artists’ studios, art fairs, museums and private collections. Sessions are led by a wide range of art world professionals and include extensive object handling, cataloguing training, study of the practices of auction houses and galleries, curating workshops, and conversations with contemporary artists. With integral study trips abroad, work experience at Christie’s London and many networking opportunities, the programme aims to provide you with the depth of knowledge, practical and interpretive tools and confidence necessary to be able to imagine and develop your career working with art and artists in the international art world.

Course components

The core lecture series – organized around a thematic of Modern, Anti-Modern, and Postmodern – underpins all components of the programme

Object-based study is central to our teaching and will provide you with the opportunity to study in direct contact with works of art through museum and gallery-based classes, specialist-led handling sessions, studio visits and conservation sessions. You will be trained in cataloguing to auction house and museum standards through detailed case studies, assessing issues that affect market value. You will ll learn to analyse the different processes of assessment, classification and interpretation used by art institutions

Being engaged with current debates about curating will enable you to devise fresh approaches to the display of art works. You will explore practices in art criticism, developing skills to review exhibitions and produce reports

Our Culture and Ideology Seminars will teach you the in-depth analysis of relationships between art practices, cultural contexts and critical debates. You will develop skills to deliver presentations and generate seminar discussion. You will be involved in Methodology Seminars – the analysis of technical, art-historical and interpretative texts – that provide transferable skills for independent research and individual development

Your thesis, produced at the end of the year, follows a professional and creative model of research and presentation that takes the form of an exhibition catalogue carried out to museum/gallery standards. You will evolve a topic through discussion, workshops and presentational work to outside curators. Your primary research skills with works of art, theoretical models and knowledge of art history will come together in this exciting summative project that represents a synthesis of the key academic and professional skills learned on the programme.

Study Abroad and follow the Contemporary Art Scene in Europe. You will participate in two study trips a year to major events in Europe as key elements of a course that keeps pace with a fast-moving art world. These include visits to international events such as the Venice Biennale, Berlin Biennale and Documenta.

The goal of the M.A. in Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market is for students to acquire essential knowledge about art, the art market and their reciprocal relationship, while simultaneously building practical skills in preparation for careers in the art world. The program emphasizes the importance of direct contact with original works of art, and through the use of Christie's sale rooms and specialist staff, exploration of the history of art.

This interdisciplinary program provides an in-depth study of modern and contemporary art and its markets from the mid-19th century to the present day. Led by an expert faculty, the integrated program combines the development of connoisseurship skills through object-based learning and investigative cataloguing and writing, art history, knowledge of current art business practices and the market, and art market history. Students study art works first-hand in sites of production and exhibition throughout New York City and beyond. Additionally, access to specialists and salerooms through our central location at Christie’s auction house enhances the program and provides a unique and exceptional learning opportunity.

Our Unique Approach

Access to a wide range of art professionals provides students with first-hand knowledge of the workings of the art world, and the transferable skills they need to become art world professionals. An intensive program, it takes only 15 months to complete and concludes with the writing of a Master’s thesis and a mandatory 45-day internship to help students launch their professional careers.

Who should apply?

The program is designed both for students who have recently graduated with a B.A. in art history or a related humanities discipline and for career changers wishing to gain access to the art world. Students from a wide variety of fields have successfully merged their prior backgrounds with the program, launching successful careers at auction houses, galleries, non-profits, art fairs and art advisories upon graduation.

You will participate in core lecture programmes in the History of Art leading to a summative examination. This course is complemented by a seminar in the History and Theory of Art and Culture. You will experience Law through lectures and seminars delivered by professional practitioners and you will complete case studies for yourself. For the duration of the course, you will also actively participate to the life of a department within Christie’s. Your experience of the Auction Business through this placement will be augmented by visits to at least three key international Art Fairs and events (such as FIAC Paris, TEFAF Maastricht and Art Basel Hong Kong), to enable you to explore the art world in a variety of contexts.

Your dissertation takes the form of Work Placement Report and Catalogue of an auction consignment. This will enable you to bring together all three areas of your programme of study: Art History, Law and Business Practice in a single piece of work.

This unique programme offers a postgraduate education which provides an overview of the developments in European art from Antiquity through the Medieval period to the Renaissance. Students can work in detail on a subject of their choice, while following a course which traces the transformations, continuities and revivals over three millennia of art. Beyond a lecture series which covers the arts in all media, the focus is on small group teaching, with seminars, visits and handling sessions, which stress object analysis and developing professional skills. Access is given to extraordinary material from the collections of London and works coming through the Christies auction house, and there are frequent trips to other sites in the UK and in Europe.
The core lecture series, covering material from Antiquity to the Renaissance, and delivered by both Christie’s faculty and outside experts, underpins all components of the programme. Our study trips are an integral part of this course. These take you to a number of major sites and museums in the UK, while two longer trips are made to European centres, one of which is usually Rome. This will allow you to experience the art and architecture of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance at the centres of its production. Culture and Ideology Seminars will teach you the importance of iconography, patronage and artistic context of Early European works of art. In these seminars you will develop the skills to deliver presentations and generate seminar discussion

Object-based study is the foundation of our teaching and will provide you with relevant training for the public and commercial art worlds. This includes practical and research-based study of materials and techniques, style, dating, quality and authenticity. You will be trained in cataloguing to auction house and museum standards. Handling sessions and visits to museums and to Christie’s warehouse form an essential part of the course. Engagement with current debates about curatorial practice will enable you to devise fresh approaches to the display and interpretation of art works. You will learn how to produce reports on works of art to a professional standard. You will explore varieties of art criticism, developing skills to review exhibitions. Methodology seminars acquaint you with the historiography, and equip you with the theoretical tools for the analyses of works of art.

This 10-month program focuses on the analysis of contemporary art work and the understanding of evolving demands of the art market in a global context. The techniques of management, communication, marketing and the knowledge of law and regulations contribute in providing the expertise required when working in the field of contemporary art.

Based in the heart of Paris, on the premises of IESA Art & Culture, students are within easy access to all the major Parisian museums, auction houses and contemporary art galleries. Class visits to the most prominent contemporary art museums, galleries, and auction houses are organized to allow students to dialogue with curators, art historians, and gallerists.

Study trips to art centers in France are organized during each semester to allow students to network with seasoned professionals in the art sector.

Structure

The program consists of 3 trimesters:

2 trimesters of classwork (Oct-Dec/ Jan-March) and a trimester dedicated to internships (April-June) allowing students to gain professional experience (Jan-March).

During the last two trimesters, students will work on a personal project to be presented in front of a professional jury in order to validate the certificate.

Each trimester contains 200 contact hours over a 10-week period. Courses are taught in English.

Students are attributed a mentor for personalized coaching and will follow group methodology sessions to guide them in the research and development of their personal project.

1st trimester:

The History of the Contemporary Art in Europe and United States; the Economics of the Contemporary Art Market; Art Law; Art and Project Management; Communication and the Marketing, Research, Development and Management of Artistic projects (content, business plan, legal structure, communication, marketing); visits and workshops with professionals.

The curriculum of the course consists of surveys of modern and international contemporary art, as well as close consideration of visual arts institutions and practices, training in exhibition organization and public programs in museums and not-for-profit galleries, commissioning, writing, publishing and commercial gallery activity. The teaching combines lecture-based courses, self-initiated research, seminars, site visits, and collaborative work. It also involves the realization of a project in partnership with a national pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
The duration of the Masters program is divided as follows: seven months of lectures, lab activities, museum and gallery visits, integrated with individual study, project development and three months dedicated to the elaboration of a final Thesis Project that can be undertaken alone or in a group.
The Masters program has a very pragmatic approach, providing students with methodology and a step-by-step path that will lead to the realization of an exhibition project. For that reason its structure is divided into 3 main parts:

- AREA 1_THEORY
The first part provides students with solid introduction to the history of post-WW2 modern and contemporary art, and a critical analysis of recent trends. The history of exhibitions is analyzed in the light of museology, leading to a consideration of current curatorial strategies.

- AREA 2_SKILLS AND EXPERTISE
The second part is concerned with specific expertise and skills required to develop an efficient working practice in fields of exhibition organization and management, also placing emphasis on audience development through marketing and learning, writing – as required for publication, fundraising etc – and off-site activity. Driven by renowned professionals, this area will be relevant equally for those wishing to pursue careers either in not-for-profit or commercial art worlds, in auction houses or art fairs, commissioning the production of new art work in museums or in the public realm.

- AREA 3_PRACTICE
The third part is the realization of a curatorial project, starting from an idea to its concrete realization. They will moreover live the experience of the next 57th International Art Exhibition managed by La Biennale of Venice from a special point of view, and special week inside the main cultural institution located in the city.

The Tate Modern annually offers two hands-on internships to Goldsmiths MFA Curating students, who are given the opportunity to work directly on an exhibition matched to the students' interests. Modules & Structure

In Year One, you're introduced to a series of curatorial concepts and practices through group analysis and guided research. There are also group seminars that look into significant ideas in philosophy and cultural theory to help you think broadly about your own practice

In Year Two, intensive workshops look in depth at a set of artistic and cultural themes chosen by the students. In Year Two you further develop independent curatorial research and practice, working either on your own ideas or with a London-based gallery or institution. The summer term of Year One acts as a transition to Year Two.

Government Art Collection

Each year, part 1 Goldsmiths curating students are invited to pitch an exhibition proposal to the Government Art Collection, using works from this important national collection as the basis for a contemporary art exhibition. The successful projects are realised during the final year.

Students are taught both the visual skills with which to analyse works of art and the art historical knowledge with which to contextualize them. Teaching methods focus on object-based study and regular visits to Christie’s salerooms, museums and private collections are arranged accordingly. Students also attend lectures by faculty and visiting experts and participate in student-led seminars. Frequent trips to sites in the UK and abroad are also organized. Considerable attention is given to working in the art world and professionals employed in various different fields – from dealing, insurance and marketing to curating, publishing and set design – are invited to introduce students to the wide range of job opportunities that exist for them. Written assignments take the form of essays, reports, reviews and catalogue entries in order to help students apply their art historical knowledge in a professional context.

While acquiring experience in object analysis, you will explore archaeological and historical contexts and the multiple narratives in the story of Chinese art. Starting from the Neolithic and Bronze Age art, the course covers pottery, bronze, lacquer, silk and jade, then examines Buddhism from the Han dynasty onwards, to the global reach of the ‘Silk Road’ in the Tang dynasty. Extensive treatment of artistic production during late imperial China—from the ’golden age’ of the Song dynasty to the High Qing—range through a variety of media such architecture, painting, printing, ceramics and luxury goods. The course also explores cultural developments from the 19th to the 21st century, when intensified contact with foreigners generated new practices, functions and meanings in Chinese art.

Crucially, the course will propel you into Chinese art-world practice and introduce you to the curators, scholars, artists, and dealers who shape the discipline. The specific character of this programme lies in the way it unites the close study of objects and related images, with historical research and cultural theory. Emphasis is placed on the design, production, diffusion and consumption of domestic goods - whether for elite markets or everyday use - rather than capital goods. Approaches to the history of the decorative arts and design are inter-disciplinary and make use of methodological developments in ethnography, gender studies, economic history and other academic fields. Students can either pick a specialist or generalist pathway on this programme to suit their own specific interests, depending upon their personal choice of essay and dissertation research directions.

The University of Brighton is recognised nationally and internationally as one of the leading institutions for the study of the history of decorative arts and design. This course is the only MA in the field based in a school which gained a grade 5 in the national Research Assessment Exercise, an indication of international excellence.

The goal of this module is to develop a new approach to artistic heritage management. VENICE - 1 week Workshop

Through object-based, interdisciplinary research, this Masters programme focuses on the act of making and everything that entails. We study studio practices from a variety of disciplines, their materials and techniques, but also intentions and concept. We examine art technological sources to register the artist’s voice, and other testimonies on artistic practice, make reconstructions of historical recipes and modern techniques to understand practices, ageing and its consequences as well as other changes artworks go through. Researching this all-inclusive story of an artefact is known as technical art history. It is an exciting and rapidly growing field involving (technical) art historians, scientists, conservators while also reaching out to other disciplines such as economic and social history, history of science, anthropology and aesthetics.
