There are two entry options for this program:

Option 1

(Post-Bacalaureate): Master of Science in Athletic Training

Two-year program. This program is only for those students who have already completed a bachelor's degree (in any major other than athletic training) and have met the admission requirements for the professional phase of the MS in Athletic Training program. This two-year program is intended for college graduates who have completed their bachelor's degree and who may want to change careers, individuals who didn't have time during their undergraduate years to major in athletic training and international students who want a career in athletic training.

Option 2

(Prospective Freshman): Accelerated 3+2 Master of Science in Athletic Training

The UK health and fitness industry is experiencing continued growth. Fitness membership in the UK has risen by 4.5% and now exceeds 8 million (2014 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report). Despite this, industry commentators have urged the sector not to become complacent and to continue to promote a healthy lifestyle to the nation.

This course can help graduates tap into a number of good career opportunities in sport and exercise science across a number of specialist fields, from developing programmes for elite athletes to working with schools and colleges to encourage the next generation of athletes to excel.

The programme -

Built on a successful and popular undergraduate programme, this high-level master’s degree helps to prepare students for a career in the sports industry by delivering hands-on professional skills and adopting an interdisciplinary approach to coaching.

During the course, students will explore key areas such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, peak performance, technical and tactical development, marginal gains, and injury prevention and management.

To complement their studies, students are expected to undertake work placements relevant to the course within professional sport and exercise organisations. Working at all levels, from elite athletes to schools or rehabilitation patients, students will gain valuable ‘real-world’ experience working alongside leading experts. Work placements are expected to have been organised prior to joining the course; if students have been unable to organise a placement, the University will support them in finding a suitable opportunity.

Students have full access to the University’s leading, fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Past students have benefitted from a guest speaker programme which has featured lectures from professionals from the highest level of a variety of sports, who have shared their advice, knowledge and experience of the industry.

The course team has strong industry links and the University is a partner of Southampton FC. The University also works with other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC and GB Wheelchair Rugby.

Course Content

Technical Development in Sport: On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport: The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise: This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport: This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance: This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project: The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course combines theory-led sessions with practical sessions, working individually and in groups in both the laboratory and the field. On all units you’ll work with real-life clients, in a placement either organised yourself or by members of the course team.

Work experience -

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.

Assessment -

Assessment will be a range of written coursework, viva, presentations, reports and practical tests.

Areas of study

This course covers the national curriculum range of content for physical education.

The course also includes health-related exercise, the use of new and emerging technologies in physical education, thematic teaching and learning in physical education, inclusive practice in physical education and the teaching of accredited courses in physical education.

There are four strands to this course: subject study/subject education, education studies, school placements and professional development.

Course content is kept up to date with changes in local and national initiatives and legislation, so you can be confident that your working knowledge is based on current theory and practice.

The education studies strand gives you a thorough understanding of the learning process itself, including an appreciation of individual differences. The study of the principles and practices of learning and teaching is through both school and university settings, allowing you to develop practical competency supported by analytical skills. By the end of the course you will:

• refine your understanding of pedagogy, including an appreciation of current and emerging educational theories and debate
• understand how to use and adapt teaching, learning, management and assessment strategies in order to meet the varying needs of learners
• understand how the progress and wellbeing of learners is affected by different influences and know how to take account of the principles of equality, inclusion and diversity.

The subject study/subject education strand builds upon your existing expertise in your specialist subject and provides you with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the subject in the secondary school context. You will be expected to gather and justify evidence of your achievements on a regular basis and develop and implement improvement plans.

Students use an e-portfolio to record their achievements and this is reviewed throughout the course. An action plan is used to support professional development during placements and makes up a significant part of the improvement planning process.

At the end of the course, the e-portfolio provides evidence that you have met the Teachers’ Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Ofsted identify our approach to training in schools as a key strength of this course, with an excellent balance between university tuition and school-based training.

Careers and employability

Graduates of the course are equipped with the skills and knowledge to become confident and competent secondary-school teachers.

As well as gaining a PGCE, you will be assessed against the national Teachers’ Standards in order to be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Most students gain employment in schools across the UK very soon after they have completed the course and achieved the teaching qualifications. Many former students have subsequently become curriculum leaders and senior managers in schools.

Course detail

In addition to the demand for vocational qualifications there is also a need for strength and conditioning practitioners to develop advanced skills and understanding in the field. This programme provides the opportunity to develop research, academic and practical skills that are
highly relevant to the discipline of strength and conditioning. The programme is for individuals holding a sport science related undergraduate degree or those with significant practical experience and qualifications in strength and conditioning who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work.

The learning activities and assessments on the programme are highly applied and focussed upon developing students’ ability to evaluate critically the quality and impact of their own work. A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform strength and conditioning practice.

There is scope for negotiation in terms of practical work and focus of assessment on modules depending upon individual experience or areas of interest. For example, on the Training Intervention module this could mean use of highly controlled laboratory based endurance training or field based repeated sprint conditioning with larger numbers of participants.

Format

How the programme is delivered is just as important as what is delivered for the development of appropriate Masters level skills and understanding. The teaching and assessment on the programme aims to actively engage students in a variety of learning activities.

The delivery model is based upon a single, all day study day per week. This model of delivery is aimed to support students who are in employment while undertaking the programme. The study days will be designed to engage you in interdisciplinary debate, professional practice, critical review of research, generation of feedback, presentations and data collection.

Full-time students will undertake four 30 credit modules and a 60 credit dissertation over a 12 month period.

Part-time students will normally do two 30-credit modules in year one, with two 30-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation in year 2.

• Performance analysis – using advanced performance analysis techniques to collect data in specific settings to inform athletic needs.

• Research Methods – become informed consumers and producers of research in a range of paradigms and using a variety of approaches.

• Training Interventions – investigation of training intervention and physiological adaptation for the enhancement of performance.

• Athlete Development – appreciate the inter-play between growth and maturation and use physiological and psychological markers to develop performance during growth.

• Research paper - Produce a written manuscript of publishable quality that addresses a research question relevant to strength and conditioning.

Work placements

Work-related learning is a key part of the activities and assessments on modules. In order to effectively undertake these tasks students will need to draw upon experiences from employment, continuous personal development (CPD) or a work placement. There are opportunities to undertake relevant CPD and work placement while on the programme.

Completion of a Personal and Academic Development Profile (PADP), through the academic tutor system, will help to identify which opportunities individuals could access to support their working towards accreditation with the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA). An example of the types of opportunities available through our partnerships would be strength and conditioning experience with York City FC/York City Knights RLFC or a British Weight Lifting Association qualification/UKSCA assessment preparation day facilitated by YSJ Active. Such experiences and skills will support the programme of academic study by offering tangible examples for application of theory, critical analysis and reflective practice.

What is this course about?

There has been a growing demand for Strength and Conditioning practitioners outside of professional sport structures, with the increasing professionalisation of amateur sports such as the GAA. The 'fitness trainer' of a decade ago that tended to be assume sole responsibility for the physical conditioning of inter-county Gaelic football and hurling/camogie teams, has now been replaced by 'Strength and Conditioning teams'. There is also a pattern of Strength and Conditioning practitioners working closely with special populations (paediatric & seniors), physiotherapists, sports rehabilitators and athletic therapists in both prevention and rehabilitation of athletes to return them to performance from injury. This new two year part-time programme will provide an opportunity for students to study for a MSc in Strength and Conditioning, corresponding to a Level 9 Qualification (90 ECTS credits). The overall aim of the programme is to provide an intellectually challenging applied postgraduate programme of study that will give graduates advanced knowledge, understanding and practical coaching skills in Strength and Conditioning. This will enable them to work with both elite athletes and specialist population groups. Graduates of the programme will be eligible to apply for membership to the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS), United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) based in the United States of America.

Programme Details:
The first part of the programme is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and analytical techniques in the sub-disciplines of Advanced Resistance Training, Explosive Conditioning, Metabolic Conditioning, Sports Nutrition and Periodisation. With the primary emphasis on preparing athletes and players for optimum sports performance, these modules combine more advanced theoretical and practical elements of Strength and Conditioning, providing students with the skillls to operate as a Strength and Conditioning Practitioner in a sports performance environment. The elective options of the programme provide the opportunity for students to develop further specialist skills; ranging from Injury Rehabilitation and Reconditioning and High Performance Testing, to the emerging fields of Strength and Conditioning for paediatric and geriatric population groups. Students who elect to complete the full MSc programme will also undertake a Research Project in a relevant field of study that will hone their research and analytical skills.

What follow-on study opportunities are available?
Students who successfully complete 60 credits of the programme will be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Level 9) should they opt to leave the programme Embedded Exit Award).

The Performing Arts Medicine MSc at UCL is a unique programme providing specialised training to those interested or already involved in offering health services to this very special sector of instrumental musicians, singers, dancers, actors and other performing artists.

Degree information

The MSc and diploma cover musculoskeletal injury, performance psychology, pain management, assessment and rehabilitation, disability, travelling and touring, dance and music performance science, management of the professional voice and research methodology. MSc students also engage in a research project and dissertation. The certificate is a limited curriculum version for non-clinicians or clinicians who wish to upgrade at a later time.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The MSc programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and the research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (eight core modules, 120 credits) A Postgraduate Certificate (four core modules, 60 credits). There are no optional modules for this degree.

Dissertation/research project
All MSc students undertake a research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 6,000–7,000 words, a presentation and a viva.

Teaching and learning
The delivery of the programme is through lectures, tutorials or workshops. Performing arts clinics and performance settings when possible are also included in the programme. Details about the lecturers and tutors can be found here.

Assessment is through coursework, written examinations and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, with each module requiring approximately 36 hours of staff contact time and 200 hours of total student input in each 12-week semester.

The main theme of the teaching and learning aspect of this MSc is to encourage you to develop the necessary skills to understand and communicate advanced theoretical and research-based knowledge of nutrition to people who participate in sport and exercise. Learning methods reflect the wide variety of topics associated with applied sport and exercise nutrition and include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical exercises, laboratory sessions and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Student performance in each module is usually assessed by evaluation of the quality of written or design work, and verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project case work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Many sports are becoming increasingly professional in their approach to training and nutrition. For example, many sports clubs now employ full-time nutrition consultants. Career prospects outside sport are perhaps even more exciting. The NHS offers an increasing number of opportunities for students with specialist training in exercise nutrition to support GP referral schemes and other healthy living programmes. The growing awareness of health within society, coupled with misunderstandings about the relationships between physical activity, nutrition and health has led to an increasing demand for graduates who can deliver evidence-based solutions and advice at all levels. State-of-the-art laboratory and field based equipment will support you to develop research and sport science support skills. The teaching team have significant research and applied expertise in the subject, but also in terms of innovative approaches to learning and teaching in sport and exercise science. Course detail

This programme aims to develop an advanced multidisciplinary understanding of contemporary issues that apply to sport and exercise science from both a theoretical and practical perspective. The programme is for individuals holding a sport science related undergraduate
degree or those with significant practical experience and qualifications in sport who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work.

The learning activities and assessments on the programme are highly applied and focussed upon developing students’ ability to evaluate critically the quality and impact of their own work. A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform sport and exercise science support work.

There is scope for negotiation in terms of practical work and focus of assessment on modules depending upon individual experience or areas of interest. For example, on the Performance Analysis module this could mean use of 3D modelling of a closed skill in the laboratory or utilising GPS technology to track movement of an entire team in a field-based setting.

• Performance analysis – using advanced performance analysis techniques to collect data in specific settings to inform athletic needs.

• Research Methods – become informed consumers and producers of research in a range of paradigms and using a variety of approaches.

• Training Interventions – investigation of training intervention and physiological adaptation for the enhancement of performance.

• Psychological Dimensions – appreciate existing psychological concepts and how they can be used to promote behaviour change in sport performance and coaching setting with diverse audiences.

• Research paper - Produce a written manuscript of publishable quality that addresses a research question relevant to strength and conditioning.

Format

This is a full-time course, you will undertake four 30 credit modules and a 60 credit dissertation over a 12 month period.

A part-time student will normally do two 30-credit modules in year one, with two 30-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation in year 2.

Work placements

Work-related learning is a key part of the activities and assessments on modules. In order to effectively undertake these tasks students will need to draw upon experiences from employment, continuous personal development (CPD) or a work placement. There are opportunities to undertake relevant CPD and work placement while on the programme.

Completion of a Personal and Academic Development Profile (PADP), through the academic tutor system, will help to identify which opportunities individuals could access to support their working towards accreditation with the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

An example of the types of opportunities available through our partnerships would be experience in clinical exercise
physiology supporting delivery of NHS based testing and exercise classes or completion of a Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) Level 4 qualification facilitated by YSJ Active. As a student of this programme, you will acquire an advanced understanding of issues in the field of sport sciences, both applied and fundamental. You will practice in measuring and analyzing sports performance and gain familiarity with research methods and advanced statistics. Within the past decade there has been a marked growth in the career opportunities available for sport and exercise biomechanics (eg teaching in further and higher education, World Class Support programmes). Coupled with this growth there has also been an increased need for appropriately qualified and accredited individuals to fill such positions.

The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences has developed procedures for the accreditation of suitably experienced individuals that stipulate the possession of a relevant form of postgraduate qualification. The world-class Tudor Hale Centre for Sport is the focus of sporting activities, both academic and recreational, at the University. The Tudor Hale Centre for Sport incorporates a suite of state of the art sport science laboratories, a sports injury clinic, a strength and conditioning room and a fitness suite. In addition, there is a sports hall used for basketball, netball, trampolining, badminton, volleyball, cricket, soccer, table tennis, hockey and ultimate frisbee. We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level.

Several teams are supported with high-level coaching, training facility support and sports science analysis. Numerous local and national sports clubs’ links with our student sports teams provide additional high-level playing opportunities.

Indicative modules
All students are required to complete four modules in their chosen pathway plus the two modules in research methods and statistics and a research dissertation or support placement. Typical modules include:

Teaching and Assessment
To gain a Postgraduate Certificate students need to complete three modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment
To gain a Postgraduate Diploma students need to complete six modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment
To gain an MSc students need to complete six modules and a dissertation of 12,000-words
