Technical Development in Sport
On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.
Psycho-Social Development in Sport
The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.
Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise
This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.
Tactical Development in Sport
This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.
Marginal Gains for Peak Performance
This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.
The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.
Students have full access to the University’s leading fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.
You could work with professional, elite or Olympic athletes, meeting the challenges of ensuring they maintain peak fitness in world-class competition, or work with hospitals and health organisations to develop training and recovery programmes for patients suffering injury or disability. You could work with schools and/or colleges, developing fitness programmes and encouraging the next generation of athletes to excel.

This MSc has been designed in conjunction with industry experts, ensuring you receive the skills and theory precisely tailored to industry requirements. Our industry partners are also integral in the provision of placement opportunities, giving you the advantage of real-world experience alongside potential employers during your master’s studies.
Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.
If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.
The continued expansion of sport strength and conditioning provision around the UK means there is a growing need for highly qualified graduates in this field, as well as those already working within the setting to further extend their specialist strength and conditioning knowledge.
This masters degree offers the opportunity for students to learn and apply contemporary theoretical principles and scientific methodologies that enhance strength and conditioning practice.
The programme is designed to build on the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) award, and the UKSCA Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach (ASCC) award. This programme is for students who want to focus on a research topic with a view to create new knowledge within the growing area of sport and exercise science. You will be guided by experts in the field who will support you to produce high quality original research.
You will have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment in the laboratories. Our expertise will allow students to employ the latest techniques in the pursuit of producing significant and original research that is publishable. Some of the techniques include modified ELISA’s, Real-Time PCR, Western Blot, isotope methodology for metabolism, 2-3D motion analysis using MaxTRAQ and Vicon, force analysis using Kistler force plates and isokinetic dynamometers, muscle ultrasound, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.
You will automatically gain access to our research community in the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre (SESRC) and Health Sciences Research Centre (HSRC). The research centres are active in researching diabetes, obesity, diseased and healthy metabolism, neuromuscular function, biomechanics in elite and pathological populations, environmental physiology, nutrition in athletic and chronic diseased populations, protein synthesis and muscle growth, sport & exercise psychology and performance and well-being.
The key modules on this course revolve around you producing a high-level independent research project, which will prepare you for higher levels of research and study.
The course begins with a research methods module which will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of different approaches to research, allowing you to choose the correct method for your project, depending on your specific area of interest. You will study key philosophical questions as to the nature of science and knowledge, and develop a critical awareness of the principles and practice of qualitative and quantitative approaches and techniques. You will also be introduced to the management of ethical issues associated with collecting and analysing data on human participants.
You will also be guided on the development of your research proposal, and be invited to attend the Sport Science Seminars Series to frame your understanding of current sport-related research.
Other modules on the programme allow you to study more in-depth knowledge and gain relevant practical skill in biomechanics, psychology, and/or physiology that are invaluable for your dissertation project.

The Sociology of Childhood and Children's Rights MA will introduce students to a range of contemporary social theories about childhood and children's rights, critically explore social constructions of childhood, and consider the implications these have for professional practice and research with children and young people.
This programme provides students with the opportunity to gain an understanding of sociological theories and concepts of childhood and children’s rights, including a recognition of the varied childhoods experienced by children in richer and poorer contexts and how these are shifting in a globalising world. It also helps students develop their critical analytical skills and improve their theoretical understanding and professional practice when working with, and for, children.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of three core modules (90 credits), one optional module (30 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits).
Researching Childhood is the recommended optional module to help prepare for the MA SCCR dissertation.
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 20,000 words.
Teaching and learning
Theories of Childhood & Society and Researching Childhood run in the evenings. Children's rights in Practice runs over a one-week intensive block. Social Theory and the Study of Contemporary Social Problems runs in the afternoon or online.
Face-to-face teaching includes lectures, discussions and debates, as well as providing students the opportunity to discuss readings, case studies, images, and films. An online environment is provided for readings and activities between teaching sessions. Students are encouraged to reflect upon their own personal, academic and/or professional experiences during sessions.
Each core module is assessed by a 5,000-word written assignment. In addition there are tutorials for essay preparation and seminars to support dissertation research.

Applying the principles of sport and exercise biomechanics to support and enhance your understanding of human performance and injury is at the heart of this course. You will have the opportunity to examine the function and movement of the human body through laboratory data collection, employing cutting-edge technology such as 3D motion analysis, multicomponent dynamometry and neuromuscular imaging.
Your learning will be inspired by the very latest insights, and you will be supported by tutors who are engaged in research and scientific support within the areas of neuromuscular assessment and the optimisation of athletic performance. Their research was graded "internationally excellent" and "world leading" in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. They have provided support and coaching interventions for Olympic athletes. Postgraduate study of sport and exercise science at UCLan provides the scientific backup for optimising athletic performance / monitoring, and offers a cornerstone of some health and wellness interventions. This course is targeted at students of sport and exercise sciences who wish to develop their vocational skills in a truly applied context and learn from some of the world’s leading experts in this field. Sport and exercise scientists will have a broad technical knowledge, allied to an excellent applied skills base, and an underpinning knowledge of the core disciplines of physiology and biomechanics. This innovative master’s programme allows the application of these varied principles via both a research and practitioner-based context, particularly focused on the discipline areas of physiology and biomechanics.
The Division of Sport Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, is home to some of the world’s leading researchers in the field of sport and exercise sciences, making this course truly unique.
It consists of a compulsory element outlining research methods, ethics and practices, advanced methodologies and a research project. This is supplemented by a choice of two optional study modules. A variety of assessment methods are used including coursework, case studies, presentations and reflective portfolios.
The MSc Sport and Exercise Science requires that you take nine modules in total, all at Level 4. The modules will be taken through a combination of single semester and double semester delivery. This will require the final dissertation to be undertaken during Semesters 2 and 3.
The School of Sport and Wellbeing has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite guest speakers from industry to speak to students within modules across a range of our courses.
This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences has developed procedures for the accreditation of suitably experienced individuals that stipulate the possession of a relevant form of postgraduate qualification. The MSc in Sport and Exercise Physiology, therefore, provides students with an opportunity to study at a postgraduate level to fulfill the initial requirements for BASES accreditation, to develop their knowledge of the sport and exercise sciences and to increase their skills in applying such knowledge in both sporting and exercise populations

The world-class Tudor Hale Centre for Sport is the focus of sporting activities, both academic and recreational, at the University. The Tudor Hale Centre for Sport incorporates a suite of state of the art sport science laboratories, a sports injury clinic, a strength and conditioning room and a fitness suite. In addition, there is a sports hall used for basketball, netball, trampolining, badminton, volleyball, cricket, soccer, table tennis, hockey and ultimate frisbee. Located beside the Tudor Hale Centre for Sport you will find our brand new Sports Dome, incorporating four indoor tennis courts, our all-weather astro turf pitch, and grass rugby pitch.
