This course has been designed to develop the knowledge, skills, research interests and career prospects of those who work, or wish to work, in finance, treasury management or accountancy. It’s especially useful if you’re a graduate with little or no accounting experience, as it offers the opportunity to study modules which will cover this shortfall.

If you are a graduate member of a UK accountancy body, or an overseas equivalent, you may claim up to four exemptions from this Masters by applying for Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning. This would enable you to complete the taught part of the course in one semester.

The course provides exemptions from 9 papers of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) exams. The Westminster Business School is an ACCA Gold approved learning partner and is the only UK institution to offer this many ACCA exemptions on completion of a one-year course. Furthermore, graduates of the course have the chance to enter the the Gateway route of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). On successful completion of the Gateway examination, students will gain exemptions from 11 of the 16 CIMA examinations.

As a postgraduate finance student you will have access to the Financial Markets Suite, which uses the Bloomberg computer system to monitor real-time financial market movements and trends. It’s a resource available to very few UK universities, and one which provides a modern and progressive teaching environment combining finance theory with practice.

A highlight for many students are the social events organised throughout the course which provide an opportunity for networking with fellow students and alumni. Students on this course also benefit from free access to part of the material on the course reading list.

Course structure

The following modules are indicative of what you will study on this course.

You can choose a total of three option modules – two or three from the following list, and a third module may be chosen from anywhere within the University, subject to the course leader’s approval.

Your exposure to the Financial Markets Suite simulated financial trading facility will mean you will be equipped in both the theory and practice of international finance.

Graduates of the course can apply to various professional accountancy bodies, which give exemptions on the basis of electives you have studied. The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) allow graduates to go through a "Gateway" route. Successful completion of the Gateway exam grants 12 exemptions from CIMA's 17 examinations. You also have the opportunity to gain exemption from 9 papers of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) examinations during this degree.

Experienced professionals in any business field share their career experiences and knowledge with students who may wish to venture down a similar path in the near future. Our mentors come from a wide range of backgrounds, including Marketing, General Management, Finance and Entrepreneurship. In addition, our mentors typically offer 3 hours of their time over a 3 month period to the mentee (student). In addition, to one-to-one meetings, students are encouraged to keep in touch with their mentor over email and telephone.

Overview

A ground-breaking master’s programme that enables you to gain an MSc degree and your ACCA professional accountancy qualification at the same time

The University of London and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountancy, are enabling you to complete an MSc in Professional Accountancy and your ACCA professional accountancy qualification at the same time. This route to the ACCA qualification will be of value to accountants aspiring to senior roles and enable them to stand out from the crowd in terms of their qualifications. Compared with the cost of studying for an accountancy qualification and a master’s separately, this will save time and money for many ACCA students.

The MSc modules are the first to be recognised by ACCA as counting towards the professional level of the ACCA qualification. You have flexibility regarding how you structure your studies and there are different pathways to the award depending on the level of entrance requirement that you have met. The University is providing a unique opportunity for you to choose face-to-face study support in London [pdf] for two modules of this programme. The programme pathways are outlined below.

Prestige

The modules on the new MSc in Professional Accountancy are being developed with academic input from UCL, one of the University of London's constituent Colleges. UCL is ranked seventh in the world's top universities (QS World University Rankings 2015/16).

Who will benefit from this programme?

The opportunity to gain a prestigious master’s level qualification is open to ACCA students, affiliates and members, no matter what stage they are at in their professional qualification journey.

ACCA members who are qualified and affiliates who have completed all the ACCA assessments can follow a route to ‘top-up’ their professional qualification with this master’s.

ACCA students who have passed the fundamentals level of the ACCA qualification can opt to continue towards their ACCA qualification by using the master’s as an equivalent to two of their final ACCA papers.

Programme details

The three ACCA modules (P1 to P3) you study as part of your ACCA qualification give you accreditation for prior learning (APL) for 90 credits of your master's. The two University of London option modules will be recognised by ACCA as part of your professional qualification.

Interactive and supported study

You study using online learning resources that include: multimedia content, formative assessments, learning activities and facilities for you to interact with your tutor and your peers. You can study independently with online support including access to an online tutor or you can study at a teaching institution with access to a tutor face-to-face (if this is available in your location). In addition to monitoring online forums and responding to queries, online tutors provide an introduction to the module at the start of the session and guidance on assessment.

Your time commitment

You can study at the pace you choose whether part time or full time. You can complete the MSc in under a year or take longer if that is more convenient. Each module is studied over a 22 week session, requiring an average of 12 hours of study per week.

Structure and syllabus

See the pathways diagram [PDF 429kB] to check the pathways open to you - http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/sites/default/files/pathways.pdf

MSc for ACCA students Pathway 1 -

The MSc comprises the relevant ACCA papers (or their equivalent) and 2 x University of London (UoL) option modules and 1 x UoL project.

Postgraduate Certificate with possible transfer to the MSc -

The PG Cert comprises 2 x UoL option modules.

MSc for ACCA members and affiliates Pathway 2 -

The MSc comprises the relevant ACCA papers (or their equivalent) and 1 x UoL option module for ACCA members and affiliates and 1 x UoL project.

Assessment

The MSc and PG Certificate are assessed through a combination of elements including coursework, projects and written paper examinations. All elements of the assessment must normally be completed in the same study session. The grade awarded for each module will be based on all of the elements of assessment.

See the assessment table [PDF 15Kb] for more information about how the modules are assessed - http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/sites/default/files/module-assessment-weightings.pdf

The examinations take place locally twice per year in June and December. You do not have to come to London to take your examinations because we have examination centres around the world as well as in London. We arrange the examinations mainly through Ministries of Education or the British Council. The coursework and projects are submitted through the virtual learning environment by the deadlines in the study calendar.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching and learning methods typically comprise weekly lecture/workshops with the use of PowerPoint slides and other audio-visual teaching aids. The virtual learning environment provides access to the module guides, teaching and learning materials, and other resources. There will be opportunities for active-learning and formative feedback.
The dissertation is a self-directed activity guided by a supervisor. Assessment is based on the project report. Most of the accounting modules are assessed solely by examination, as this is a requirement for potential exemption from the professional examinations. Other modules are assessed by coursework and examination.

This course has been developed in conjunction with the ACCA to meet the requirements of both a Diploma in Professional Studies in Accounting and the ACCA Fundamental Skills syllabus.

On completion, you will be able to apply to the ACCA for exemptions from their Fundamental Skills papers F4 to F9.

This course is offered on a part-time and full-time basis.

You will study a broad range of subjects, including financial accounting, management accounting, financial management, taxation, auditing, law, quantitative techniques and economics, preparing you for a senior role in accountancy.

Membership of ACCA also provides you with access to the institute’s resources and the opportunity to network with senior professionals and executives.

As an ACCA Gold Learning Partner, the university is recognised as providing high quality standards of tuition and excellent student support.

On completion of the Diploma in Professional Studies in Accounting you will be able to progress onto the Accounting PGDip/MSc course.

Course structure

You will be following the ACCA’s foundation-stage papers syllabus for papers F4–F9, inclusive, as part of the diploma qualification.

You will be allocated a subject-specialist supervisor who will be available to support you, advise you and discuss your personal research needs during the year for your research project or dissertation. In addition, students have the opportunity to attend workshops covering research methods and ethical issues and to share ideas and strategies.

ACCA syllabus mapping

We have designed the university awards to run alongside the ACCA qualifications. The Diploma in Professional Studies in Accounting follows the ACCA’s F4–F9 fundamental skills papers. Upon completion of this you will gain a diploma and become part-qualified.

You can then progress onto the masters and the ACCA professional-level syllabus. To become ACCA qualified you will also need to complete two papers P5, P6 or P7, this can be done alongside the MSc Accounting.

You will follow the ACCA’s Fundamental Skills syllabus for the Diploma in Professional Studies in Accounting qualification and, on completion of the course, will be able to apply to ACCA for exemptions from Fundamental Skills papers F4 to F9 inclusive.

Assessment involves both coursework and exams. We offer a high level of student support from a small and committed course team, and aim to keep class sizes below 30 students.

If you would like to just receive tuition from the university for any of the ACCA Fundamental Skills or Professional papers and sit exams directly with the ACCA, please email  for more information. More details about individual papers are available from http://www.accaglobal.com.
