This multidisciplinary, two-semester post-graduate Advanced Television and Film program — facilitated by the School of Communications, Media, Arts and Design in the hub of Toronto's film and television district — is especially beneficial for writers, directors, producers, editors, actors and other film and television craftspeople who want to expand their knowledge of the industry.

The major focus of the program's first semester is on creating, pitching, outlining, developing, drafting and polishing production-ready short film scripts. During the second semester, you have the opportunity to prepare, perform in, shoot and/or post a number of these shows.

Additionally, the Advanced Television and Film - Script to Screen program sees you deconstructing classic films, television shows and scripts of all genres. COURSE OVERVIEW

Being an Assistant Director or Floor Manager is a demanding role that requires a level head, self-confidence and strong communication skills in order to ensure that the crew and the production meet the challenges of demanding conditions and time constraints.

Assistant Directors and Floor Managers are responsible for the daily operation of the shooting set / television studio. Their objective is to provide the Director with everything he or she needs to realise his or her vision. They are at the heart of ensuring a production stays on track and is delivered successfully.

Assistant Directors and Floor Managers, among many other things, make schedules, attend to the cast, direct extras, oversee the crew as each shot is prepared, create detailed reports of each day's events, and are looked to by cast and crew to solve the many problems that continually arise on set.

CURRICULUM

This course combines practical experience on Fiction films and TV Entertainment shows with industry work experience placements and intensive training.

The course has been developed to meet industry demand and NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors. Unlike other schools, all production costs are met by the School and productions are given cash production budgets.

The diploma course is 12 months full-time and is delivered at the NFTS:

Specifically students will learn about:
-Reading a script and developing a shooting schedule
-How to use relevant industry software (e.g Movie Magic and Adobe Story)
-The impact of budget, cast availability and script coverage on the shooting schedule
-Supporting the hiring of locations, props and equipment
-Leading a technical recce
-Set and Studio Floor protocols and etiquette
-Liaising with the production office to create call sheets, movement orders, location agreements and other production paperwork
-Managing a set or studio floor with confidence during a shoot
-Managing talent
-Health and Safety and First Aid

PLACEMENT

Each student will complete a minimum of 10-days work experience. This is a requirement to pass the course. Students are encouraged and supported to complete further work experience as appropriate.

This programme is intended for existing health care practitioners or graduates with a science background who wish to work as part of the anaesthetic team.

The Physicians' Assistant (Anaesthesia) is a health professional who will expand the anaesthetic service and make operating theatres work more efficiently. You will work alongside other members of the anaesthetic team and under the supervision of your anaesthetist.

The programme will develop a practitioner role that enables the anaesthesia team to have more staff working differently. Presently in the UK only doctors who have had specialist training in anaesthesia can administer anaesthetics.

The PA(A) is a health professional who will expand the anaesthetic service and make operating theatres work more efficiently. You will work alongside other members of the anaesthetic team and under the supervision of your anaesthetist.

The programme is studied over 27 months full-time which includes 24 months of academic study and clinical training, followed by 3 months of supervised practice.

Students who have satisfactorily completed the 120 taught credits of the Postgraduate Diploma: Physicians’ Assistant (Anaesthesia) will have the option of transferring to the Physicians’ Assistant (Anaesthesia) MSc Programme. Award of the MSc will require the completion of an additional 60 credit Dissertation module, which would take the form of a research project of their own choosing. The MSc is self funded costing £1980 in 2014/2015 (subject to change each year).

Pathologists’ Assistants (PAs) are “physician extenders” for anatomic pathologists. PAs perform delegated medical tasks under the supervision of a medically qualified pathologist. They perform initial examination, dissection, and gross description of surgically removed tissues, assist in dissection of bodies during autopsies, and perform intraoperative frozen sections. They possess highly standardized skills related to each of these procedures which allow pathologists to spend more of their time looking at slides.

The Master of Pathologists' Assistant (MDPA) program is a two year continuous course-based masters program that will include both in class work along side practicum components.

All students are considered full-time. Part-time status may be considered and must be approved by the Graduate Program Director.

History

The University of Calgary has launched a new Pathologists' Assistant (PA) M.Sc. training program as a specialization within the Medical Sciences Graduate Program starting July 2012. In 2015 the Master of Pathologists' Assistant program was fully approved through the University of Calgary and Alberta Government to start taking students in September 2016.

Career Prospects

After graduation, students are eligible to sit the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) PA board-certification examination.

This new diploma course is designed to thoroughly equip students with the skills required to foster a successful future career as a Film or Television 1st or 2nd AC.

Participants will learn from practical hands-on workshops and through on location and in studio experience on a range of drama projects. This will ensure that participants leave the course with the practical experience – and at least six film credits - for continuing their professional career.

The 1st Assistant Camera (1st AC) and 2nd Assistant Camera (2nd AC) roles are amongst the most skilled jobs on a film crew. The 1st Assistant Camera (Focus Puller) is responsible for focusing and refocusing the camera lens as actors move within the frame of each shot, as well as running the camera crew. 2nd ACs (Clapper Loaders) are responsible for loading and unloading the film magazine or digital media and completing all camera sheets.

This course gives you the opportunity to work as a 1st AC in a safe environment and to gain the valuable credits required to move on in your career.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Both the 1st AC and the 2nd AC are critical to the success of any film or television drama production. Being part of the camera crew is exciting, varied and demanding, requiring many skills to be successful.

To do this role, you will need to:
-Be calm and level-headed
-Work well as part of a team
-Have organisational and time-management skills
-Be able to work to a deadline
-Pay close attention to accuracy and detail
-Be a good communicator
-Be adaptable to changing circumstances

Recently the BFI identified Camera Crew and 1st ACs and 2nd ACs specifically, as a skills shortage area. More need to be trained, particularly ACs with experience of both film and digital. In addition, 2nd ACs need the opportunity to ‘step up’ and develop their 1st AC skills.

CURRICULUM

This course has been developed due to industry demand and combines practical experience on film shoots with NFTS student directors and cinematographers with practical hands-on workshops by working 1st and 2nd ACs.

The course consists of six months of focused production work and tuition, broken over a 12month period. The course is divided into three sections.

Section 1 (January/February)
In Section 1 you will be taught about the various cameras, lenses and other related equipment, learn about the core work of both the 1st AC and 2nd AC. There will be intensive workshops on ‘pulling focus’ manually, camera loading, completing camera sheets, marking up the clapper board and changing lenses. Students will work on two films shot on the Ari Alexa.

Section 2 (Late June/July/to mid August)
In Section 2 the focus is twofold, translating the skills learnt in Section 1 into a larger setting, whilst also learning new skills in areas such as remote ‘focus pulling’ and the 2nd ACs relationship with the DIT. Students will again work on two 'Graduation' films. These are large scale projects with crews often in excess of fifty people. In addition to working on these films students will also undertake a number of additional single day specialist workshops to flesh out their understanding of particular techniques or technologies.

Section 3 (September/October)
The final section of the course is focused on working on film. There will be a specific focus in this section on working with film stock and liaising with the lab re: processing. Section 3 will culminate in each student working on two NFTS films shot on Super 16 as both a 1st and 2nd AC.

In applying to this course you therefore need to be available to attend the School in January, February (Section 1), from mid June, July through to mid August (Section 2) and then September, October (Section 3). In special circumstances, the 3 modules can be completed over a 2-year period.

During the three teaching sections students are expected to be at the School five days per week. In periods between each teaching block students should pursue their own professional work to develop their experience.

Delivery and assessment

The MLitt in Publishing Studies is delivered through interactive lectures, seminars, workshops (including sessions in the Publishing Computer Lab) and one-to-one teaching.
Assessment is based on a range of practical and academic activities, including the creation of a physical publishing product (a book, magazine, e-book or app), marketing plans, presentations, and a dissertation. Who is it for?

This MA is designed for aspiring professionals who recognise that the global publishing industry is changing dramatically - and who wish to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed by the next generation of publishers. Your first degree might be from the Humanities, the Social Sciences or the Sciences; and you might be a recent graduate or someone with work experience either in publishing or in another field.

Objectives

Located in the heart of London, the commercial centre of this global industry, this MA explores how publishing is evolving in the face of digitisation. The programme provides you with an applied understanding of how books, journals, magazines and interactive resources are conceived, developed and marketed, including the key role of authorship.

You will be encouraged to explore whether your interests lie in publishing for entertainment, education, research or information. Alongside research-led analytical assignments, you will develop a portfolio of achievements relating to the global industry which reflect the range of professional roles in contemporary publishing, including editorial, marketing, production, and both print and digital content development.

Placements

All MA Publishing students at City, University of London are strongly encouraged to apply for and complete placements, whether in London or other locations, subject to the approval of the Programme Director.

To join the optional MA Publishing Professional Placement module in Term 2, you need to be offered a placement by the beginning of that term (or by the end of Term 2 for part-time students). Whether or not you join that module, you will be encouraged to apply for the many placement opportunities that are shared with the programme, and supported to develop a practice-related Major Project that furthers your career goals.

Teaching and learning

The course content covers all types of publishing, from trade and specialist publications to novels and non-fiction, and provides a thorough grounding in the drivers of commercial success for both print and digital products.

You will be taught both by research experts and publishing practitioners who share specialist expertise and up-to-date industry knowledge.

Your core modules aim to establish and develop your understanding of contemporary industry conditions, including the impact of digitisation. Your options in Term 2 allow you to develop more scholarly or applied interests, and include an optional Professional Placement module.

You will learn through lectures, project work, student-led projects and presentations, workshops, online learning and research, preparation of submitted work, site visits and discussions. Your final module is a substantial Major Project, which can include an approved industry project.

Visiting lecturers from the industry contribute to the programme throughout the teaching year, and in many cases directly support your project work. A standard module consists of 20 timetabled hours in a combination of lectures, groupwork sessions and supervised project work. Delivery and assessment

The delivery of modules is via a variety of teaching and learning methods, including lectures, seminars, self-guided study and one-to-one supervision. Assessment includes a variety of written assignments and presentations, including a portfolio of publishing research and an extended dissertation.

This two-year, full-time program begins in September of each year. The first year is comprised of various courses. The Masters in Clinical and Abnormal Psychology offers a comprehensive grounding in aspects of psychopathology and abnormal behaviour.

As well as modules that will develop knowledge of the aetiology and treatment of a range of psychological disorders and abnormal behaviours, this programme includes a substantial research element.

You will receive extensive training in research methods via a postgraduate statistics module and will complete a postgraduate dissertation in a related topic. Links with a number of agencies and the University of South Wales’ Psychology Clinic means that suitable students should have the opportunity for access to client groups in order to complete an applied dissertation.

We aim to provide students with access to clinical populations to collect psychological data in order to complete an applied dissertation. This is possible through our links with local NHS trusts and local healthcare providers. In addition, the University of South Wales has recently invested in a new psychology clinic which provides clinical and therapeutic services. Suitable students will be able to benefit from in-house research opportunities and supervised voluntary experience.

The MSc Clinical and Abnormal Psychology draws on the research and applied expertise of psychologists in the fields of developmental, clinical, health, sports and forensic psychology. You will learn about a wide range of developmental disorders including autism and conduct disorder, as well as dependence issues such as alcohol addiction and eating disorders. You will also explore interventions such as pharmacological and behavioural treatments, as well as research on depression, anxiety and personality disorders.

The extensive research training and applied dissertation completed in this MSc programme should contribute to more robust applications to Clinical doctorate programmes.

Assistant Psychologist posts: These are sought after positions with many applicants for every post; not least because experience as an Assistant Psychologist can help support an application to clinical doctorate training programmes. Research Assistant posts: Excellent psychological research is extremely important in the field of clinical psychology. The extensive research focus and the dissertation completed in this programme will provide graduates with a range of research skills including the ability to critically evaluate literature, research, and applications in the field of clinical psychology, as well as experience in designing, conducting, writing up and disseminating good quality psychological research. These are transferable skills that should be valued in a range of Research Assistant posts.

Assessment methods

A range of assessment methods will be used, including examinations, essays, a systematic literature review, research reports, and case study analysis. You will also complete a dissertation of 15,000- 20,000 words. The range of teaching and assessment methods used will foster a range of skills that are transferable to the workplace and/or further professional training.

Facilities

As a student in the School of Psychology, you’ll have access to the latest learning technologies, facilities and equipment, including excellent designated facilities.

These include observation and interview rooms equipped with two-way mirror, CCTV and audio and allow research and interview practice sessions to be conducted and recorded onto DVD. We also have a custom-built air-conditioned PC laboratory which provides access to specialist software for running psychology experiments and conducting careers guidance interviews. More specialist equipment is also available in our cognitive suite and more details about this are given below.

- Cognitive suite
The cognitive psychology suite houses specialist psychology equipment. This includes eye tracking equipment which is capable of studying the eye movements of individuals whilst they complete cognitive tasks. The suite includes EEG (electroencephalogram) and ECG (electrocardiogram) facilities for recording electrical activity in the heart and scalp. There is also a driving simulator which is currently being used by postgraduate students to complete a study which examines the effects of stressors on driving performance.

- Psychology clinic facility (PAWB Wales)
As well as our excellent dedicated teaching facilities, the School of Psychology offers a wide range of psychological services to the general public. These are offered through our new PAWB Wales clinic facility and include play therapy, behaviour analysis, health and sport psychology interventions. The clinic activities support our wide range of postgraduate opportunities and undergraduate students can also get involved in some of the clinic’s work.

Students develop an understanding of the techniques, methods and contemporary findings of developmental cognitive neuroscience and are trained to interpret clinical case presentations within the context of the latest scientific findings of developmental brain-behaviour relationships. They gain knowledge of professional, ethical and service delivery issues in assessment and rehabilitative work.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 12,000 words (taught pathway) or 18,000 words (research pathway).

Teaching and learning
Teaching and supervision are organised on an interdepartmental basis. Teaching sessions are envisaged as interactive, with a limited amount of lecturing and an emphasis on student participation and critical discussion. Assessment is based on a combination of shorter and longer essays and the dissertation.
