The CUHK MSc in Management of Real Estate and Hospitality Assets Program delivers world class and state of the art knowledge in global real estate and hospitality assets. The real estate industry is an important pillar of the economies in Asia and the hospitality industry is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in China and Asia. Our Digital Asset & Media Management MA takes a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, allowing you to explore and critically assess competing theories and practices from across new media digital management, archival, and information science. This will provide you with a well-rounded understanding of the requirements across many domains. In recent years there has been an explosion in the volume, complexity and range of digital content in a variety of media. This has been called the big data revolution and is closely connected to the increasing interest in the digital economy as an engine of growth.

Key Features of Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice

The LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice requires commitment to study throughout one calendar year. The Department of Shipping and Trade Law offers its students dedicated resources, including IT facilities and teaching rooms. Modules

The LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice degree is modular, with students required to accumulate 180 credits to graduate. In appropriate circumstances, a student of LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice may graduate with a merit or distinction. Each programme is divided into two parts: Part I consists of 4 taught modules each weighted at 30 credits. Students undertaking an LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice are required to take four modules from the following list. Whatever your background, this course, which is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), will equip you with the knowledge to become a competent and resourceful professional, ready to go straight into a career as a Surveyor in the fast-paced property market.

There is some £680 billion invested in UK commercial property stock and just over half of this is held as investment assets. Within the residential sector, the private rented sector alone has a value of £840 billion. These real estate assets all require on-going strategic and active management.

Real Estate investment is a global trend and as such there are opportunities to work across the world, particularly within the multinational practices.

You will develop your ability to analyse, assess and synthesise solutions to problems and gain an understanding of the business drivers and constraints that influence these solutions. Your communication skills will also be developed, giving you the confidence you need to interact with clients and fellow industry professionals.

Our accreditation means this qualification meets their academic requirements, putting you well on your way to Chartered status. You can obtain full Chartered status following a period of work experience after graduation and on successful completion of the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

Course content and structure

You will study five core course units and, in addition, a mathematics refresher course and a dissertation, as well as choosing two elective course units.

Core course units:
- Pre-sessional mathematics refresher course
All students attend the compulsory pre-sessional mathematics refresher course, which runs for 2 weeks in September, before the start of term. There are no additional fees for this course however students will need to pay for accommodation for the period of this course.

- Corporate Finance
You will be introduced to the techniques of financial analysis and their applications to corporate finance. The concepts developed form the foundation of most elective finance course units. You will learn about the time value of money and the net present value rule, how to value financial assets, capital budgeting decisions, uncertainty and the risk-return trade-off and corporate governance.

- Quantitative Methods in Finance
This course unit will introduce you to mathematical statistics and theories that are applied in financial econometrics. The second half of the unit concerns the analysis of time series data including ARMA models, the analysis of non-stationary time series data, cointegration analysis, vector autoregressive models, modelling volatility in asset returns, forecasting and bootstrapping.

- Foundations of Finance
The course unit in finance will expose you to the structure of the financial markets, the instruments traded and the participants. You will be provided with the necessary tools with which to analyse how the financial markets function and how problems arise from their operations.

- Research Methods
While conducting research sounds like an easy task, it can present difficulties. This unit aims to help you avoid such traps and to assist you in developing strong research skills so that you can conduct an efficient piece of research at the end of your degree.

- Dissertation
The dissertation gives you the opportunity to analyse an economics issue in depth. You will be assigned a dissertation supervisor and, by the end of March, will submit a preliminary dissertation report that contains a clear statement of the problem under consideration, the structure of the project and the research methods that are going to be applied. The dissertation is then written over the summer.

Elective course units:
- Fixed Income Securities and Derivatives
You will gain an introduction to the alternative forms of financial assets that are traded in addition to stocks. Fixed income securities are bonds, bills and notes that offer a certain stream of income to holders. Derivatives are contingent and non-contingent claims on financial assets and are widely used for hedging risk. You will learn how to price these assets, and how to use them effectively in managing portfolios and hedging risk.

- Empirical Finance
The broad aims of this unit are to give you advanced-level training in evaluation of empirical models in finance. It will enable you to apply both quantitative techniques and qualitative methods, learnt elsewhere, to test theories and get acquainted with the existing literature in the field of finance.

- Investment and Portfolio Management
Underlying theory and empirical evidence in portfolio management will familiarise you with its practice in the finance sector. You will acquire an understanding of how funds are allocated when constructing a portfolio.

- Decision Theory and Behaviour
This course unit will deepen your knowledge of rational decision making through the exploration of behavioural models, their formalization and their scope, including applications to finance. You will also become familiarized with both theoretical and experimental methods for research in decision theory and behavioural economics.

- Public Economics
Public Economics is concerned with the study of the effects of government policy and the design of optimal policies. You will assess the implications of basic welfare economics in public policy. A number of recent research areas in public economics are then discussed including income taxation, tax evasion, externalities and social security.

- Political Economy
This course will provide an advanced treatment of the tools used in political economy to tackle some major questions faced by public sector economists. It will in particular focus on the modelling of voters and politicians’ behaviours to address the role played by incentives and constraints faced by politicians when choosing public policies. The effect of different forms of institutional arrangements on public decision making and electoral accountability will be analysed from both a theoretical and empirical perspective.

Digital content and digital technologies are a defining feature of our age. Digital data, information and knowledge are an asset for cultural heritage, memory institutions, industry, commerce and government. This programme will provide students with the core skills, knowledge and competencies to become leaders in the rapidly expanding field of digital curation. Students will study a wide range of subjects including metadata, preservation, knowledge representation, digital libraries, ethics and rights management, and new digital technologies and methods, including cloud and crowd-sourcing technologies. Students will also have an opportunity to undertake an internship to gain workplace experience. We want students to acquire a great deal of practical knowledge, but even more we want them to develop their critical and reflective capacities, and to acquire an understanding of the inter-dependence between the developments in digital processes, technology and curatorial practice. The MA will also provide an excellent grounding for students interested in going on to a PhD in Digital Curation or related area.

The construction industry is a large employer, with over 100 million people worldwide believed to depend on it. The resulting built environment accounts for nearly 50% of carbon emissions as it consumes an equal percentage of extracted, natural materials generating large quantities of landfill waste and using vast amount of water, all valuable and increasingly scarce resources.

Course Overview

UK construction is well-placed to benefit from the opportunities presented by the global shift to a low carbon economy and green construction, but there is a continuing need to ensure investment in innovation and technology alongside increased collaboration between businesses and research institutions to enable the UK to realise this potential. There is also scope for further progress, particularly with regard to addressing evident skills shortages. The global green and sustainable building industry is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 22.8% between now and 2017 as a result of increasing low carbon regulatory requirements and greater societal demand for greener products. It seems that the market is recognising these opportunities.

According to recent research by McGraw-Hill Construction (2013), around half the architects, engineers, contractors, building owners and building consultants around the world anticipate that at least 60% of their work will be green by 2015, up from 28% of firms in 2012 and only 13% in 2009.

The UK’s existing housing stock, which accounts for over half of the greenhouse gas emissions from the built environment, presents growth and development opportunities for the UK’s low carbon and sustainable construction market.

The programme will draw upon subject expertise within the School of Architecture, Built and Natural Environments, which has been commended by Externals for its commitment to innovative teaching and learning. The programme enhances a number of advanced transferable skills and equips the student with a range of skills appropriate for a broad variety of future opportunities as well as providing skills and competencies for those students who are progressing to MPhil / PhD. Regularly, our MSc students have progressed to our PhD provision. Sustainability is seen as a priority in construction circles; the very nature of its operation places a heavy burden on the environment. The programme holds firm the sustainability concept and provides students with ‘real’ examples of established practices.

Assessment

Assessments used within this Programme are normally formative or summative. In the former assessment is designed to ensure students become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Typically, such assessment will take the form of practical exercises where a more hands-on approach shows student’s ability on a range of activities. Traditional formal time-constrained assessment is by means of tests and examinations, normally of two-hour duration. Examinations are a traditional method of verifying that the work produced is the students’ own work.

To help authenticate student coursework, some modules require that the student and lecturer negotiate the topic for assessment on an individual basis, allowing the lecturer to monitor progress. Some modules where the assessment is research-based require students to verbally/visually present the research results to the lecturer and peers, followed by a question and answer session. Such assessment strategies are in accord with the learning and teaching strategies employed by the team, that is, where the aim is to generate work that is mainly student-driven, individual, reflective and where appropriate, vocationally-orientated. Feedback to students will occur early in the study period and continue over the whole study session thereby allowing for greater value added to the student’s learning.

Career Opportunities

The MSc is widely recognised as a valuable postgraduate qualification. It demonstrates the student’s ability to commit to a programme of study and develop their knowledge within that area of academic study. The programme will help develop skills which are valuable to a wide range of employers, such as the ability to analyse complex information critically, the ability to present clear and coherent arguments and the ability to present complex information in a clear manner.

Such an education will develop an awareness of the interconnectedness of the built environment, and equip the student with a qualification relevant to a number of different vocational situations. The flexibility of the modular programme enables students to develop packages of study which satisfy specialist interests and career aspirations in the built environment.

In business many large organisations have established management systems and auditing procedures, and our former students’ career paths demonstrate opportunities at all levels of management. This degree, which was developed in consultation with the BRE and major Companies/Consultants, will help students develop a career in these areas. In fact, the integral link with the BRE is a fundamental ‘kitemark’ for students and associated employers of this programme.

The School has a long history of industrial liaison. Since the 1990s programmes have had annual industrial liaison meetings. Feedback on new policies, initiatives and issues informed the curriculum, teaching and practice, especially when providing valuable input prior to validation (in particular BRE). The links will also provide experience for students to work on ‘live’ projects.

Recommendations by BRE on the content of the proposed programme(s) include:
-Providing students with the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary projects with students pursuing other construction-related qualifications, for example, architects, surveyors, civil engineers, quantity surveyors, planners and tradespeople; this approach would simulate real-life construction projects
-Enabling students to gain practical experience, thus applying the theory they have learnt

These types of industrially-centred learning provide the opportunity to inform teaching, learning and assessment adding much value to employability.

Study Plan 2015/2016

The Master Facility- & Real Estate Management (MSc degree) is a 12 month full time study with a study load of 60 credits (ECTS). Integration on a strategic level of Facility- and Real Estate Management is the key issue in this program. This is based upon the insight that assets and facility services together are responsible for the appropriate support of the primary processes and its stakeholders. The program consists of three terms of 4 month each. In Term I the focus is on Strategic Business Management and Strategic Building Management. In Term II the focus is on Strategic Asset Management and Strategic Facility Management. Next to this there is an Module Academic Skills that will be attended during term I and II. One of the ambitions is for students to create and have a company running by the end of the second year. Over the past 15 years more than 50 companies have emerged from the programme, e.g. Oxeon, Vehco, Avinode.

Students also engage in social entrepreneurship projects, work entrepreneurially within established organizations and help identify and package intellectual assets.

Action Based Educational Methods

The programme is built around an interactive, action-based pedagogy, through which you learn to manage the complexity of knowledge-based business in both simulated business scenarios and from development of real innovation projects.

During your first year you will also be given the opportunity to take part in a voluntary social entrepreneurship project. Previous students have created electric safety education in Kenya and helped women in Zanzibar develop their businesses.

The action based pedagogy, in combination with the large amount of team based simulations and the high pace ensures that you will be ready to hit the ground running after graduation, regardless of which career you pursue.

Realization/Utilization of Innovations

During the second year of the education you will be given the opportunity to try your own ability as a venture creator (Technology Entrepreneurship track and Bioscience Entrepreneurship track) work with innovation management and develop early stage intellectual assets from R&D (Intellectual Capital Management track) or work with innovative projects within one of our partner companies (Corporate Entrepreneurship Track). By contributing to the entrepreneurial capacity of the Gothenburg Innovation system you will play an active role in Chalmers’ ambition in utilization of innovations, one of the university’s main goals.

Our MSc Computational Finance equips you with the core concepts and mathematical principles of modern quantitative finance, plus the operational skills to use computational packages (mainly Matlab) for financial modelling.

We provide practical, hands-on learning about how modern, highly computerised financial markets work, how assets should be priced, and how investors should construct a portfolio of assets. In addition to traditional topics in derivatives and asset pricing, we place a special emphasis on risk management in non-Gaussian environment with extreme events.

You master these areas through studying topics including:

- Non-linear and evolutionary computational methods for derivatives pricing and portfolio management
- Applications of calculus and statistical methods
- Computational intelligence in finance and economics
- Financial markets

You also graduate with an understanding of the use of artificial financial market environments for stress testing, and the design of auctions and other financial contracts.

The focus of the LLM in International Commercial Law is on the legal and practical challenges arising out of the diverse international commercial transactions. The International Commercial Law programme offers the opportunity for an intensive but integrated education in different areas of commercial law. The course in International Commercial Law aims to develop an in-depth and specialist knowledge of International Commercial Law with a view to enhancing graduate employability.

Key Features of International Commercial Law

The LLM in International Commercial Law requires commitment to study throughout one calendar year. International Commercial Law students are given the opportunity to develop a number of important skills which are not only essential to those wishing to become lawyers but are valuable, transferable skills in themselves in other employment contexts. The Department of Postgraduate Legal Studies offers its postgraduate students dedicated resources, including IT facilities and teaching rooms. Students are fully supported by the College's dedicated Law Librarian and the Law Library holds an extensive selection of legal materials and on-line services such as Lexis and Westlaw. Students on the International Commercial Law programme are encouraged to make full use of the facilities offered by the Postgraduate Faculty and, in particular, to take advantage of training sessions run by the Faculty, such as the legal research methods and Employability sessions, as well as of the Visiting Lectures’ series.

Modules

The LLM in International Commercial Law degree is modular, with students required to accumulate 180 credits to graduate. In appropriate circumstances, a student may graduate with a merit or distinction. Each programme is divided into two parts: Part I consists of 4 taught modules each weighted at 30 credits. Students undertaking an LLM in International Commercial Law are required to take four modules from the following list. At least two of the options must be drawn from the asterisked (*) modules.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Throughout their studies, LLM students are provided with the opportunity to take part in a number of extra-curricular activities and enhance their practical understanding of shipping, insurance and commercial practice. Such activities include;

- employability lectures
- guest lecture series delivered inter alia by former judges, directors of international organisations and prominent partners from city law firms
- networking events, including an Annual LLM Career Fair
- visits to a number of leading enterprises within the City of London which also give our students another chance to network with professionals working in the commercial and maritime field
- mooting training throughout the year, including tailored guidance and weekly training classes
- free English language classes designed to assist you in improving your critical legal thinking and writing

Careers & Employability

The International Careers Adviser at Swansea runs weekly workshops for international students for example, on how to improve career prospects and improve interview techniques. The Postgraduate Department also employs two dedicated LLM employability officers who run a series of talks to develop the skills of LLM students and inform their career plans.

The Department also enjoys close links with many City law firms. For example, one of our professors on the LLM programme was a senior partner, and is now a consultant with, Ince & Co, a leading London law firm, specialising in international trade, insurance and shipping law. The ISTLprovides training programmes for London City solicitors, P & I Clubs and shipping organisations. The Swansea LLM is well known internationally. Many of our graduates secure employment shortly after completing their degrees. Several international firms keep a close relationship with the Department of Shipping and Trade Law and regularly send representatives for guest lectures and graduate recruitment purposes. Also every year the Department hosts the LLM Careers Fair which is attended by representatives from a wide range of local and international organisations. The Fair enables our LLM students to meet and talk face to face with prospective employers.
