The programme is a key element in increasing industrial competitiveness and is a sophisticated discipline which embraces management techniques, organisation, planning and the application of substantial electronic, engineering and analytical knowledge to manufacturing processes, transport, power generation and the efficient operation of industrial, commercial and civic buildings. The programme consists of course units which include various aspects of applied management and technology in the field of REAM. It is designed such that after enrolment participants already working in industry will benefit from the structure and content of the course in order to enhance their capability in Reliability Engineering and Asset Management. Our teaching staff are internationally recognised professionals with years of experience working in industry and academic institutions.

Teaching and learning

The coherent atmosphere in the classroom is to maintain high standards and quality and as such places are limited. Our teaching methods are similar to knowledge transfer concepts as well as case studies without involving much mathematical theories.

For part-time Distance Learning students, the entire course is delivered via Blackboard, an online virtual learning environment. Two course units per semester are undertaken on-line accessing web-based teaching material which will include text, images, video and animation in parallel, over a three month period. Most importantly web-based teaching generates an interactive environment with real, active communication between students and staff and between groups of students throughout the programme. Distance Learning students will need to visit the University for a 2-day residential per semester for face-to-face discussion with their Unit leader.

Career opportunities

The majority of graduates who have entered the programme to date already occupied senior maintenance related engineering positions within their organisation. Most continued in this discipline in their organisations, often in a more senior position.

There are a number of course units common to the MSc Real Estate Asset Management and MSc Real Estate Development that provide a sound grounding in real estate from the perspectives of investor, developer, occupier and the broader society. You then follow specific course units, depending on the specialist route chosen, with the ability to choose further optional units to reflect your own particular interests.

A residential fieldtrip to London is an integral part of the programme and there is an optional fieldtrip to another major European city.
It is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors under its Valuation, Commercial Property, Residential and Planning & Development pathways.

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months. There are no evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of this course are assessed by a variety of methods, including essays, report-writing, project portfolios and presentations. The majority of assessment is based on individual work with an element of collaborative project work. After the taught-element of the course, over the summer, you will undertake a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, overseen by an appropriate supervisor.

Career opportunities

The programme prepares students for employment in real estate professional practice, in the UK or internationally. Potential careers could be in both the private and public sector ranging across global consultancies, investment advisors and corporate organisations to regional property practices and development companies to government agencies or even your own real estate business. Recent graduates have gone on to work for consultancies including CBRE in UK and China, JLL, Savills, Cushman & Wakefield, Colliers International and Real Estate companies such as Grosvenor, Kier, Bruntwood and Wanda.

Our focus is wide, but targeted, and touches on many aspects of building better places and spaces, from design and construction through to operation and maintenance.

Degree information

The digital realm offers solutions to some of society's biggest problems - but there is often a knowledge gap that prevents it's power from being harnessed. This MSc draws on digital advances such as building information modelling, smart cities, big data and internet of things, to help close that gap through the management of built assets and shape a better world.

Strongly interdisciplinary, the Master of Science in Management of Built Environment aims at preparing experts in the field of maintenance and adaptation over time of buildings, from an engineering/architectural (maintenance and requalification) and an economic (valorization and maintenance of property values over time) perspectives. Multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in the field of technical and economic appraisal for the designing and requalification of existing buildings are developed. The teaching regards a large set of courses in different disciplines, such as building technology and construction, production and management engineering, architecture, strongly rooted in the European and Italian tradition which created cities and buildings celebrated worldwide. The program prepares students to compete in the international markets in the field of technical and economic management of existing buildings and urban environment. Two specializations are available:

Students will select a company with international business located in different national culture. The course offers a stimulating part-time pathway, allowing flexibility for individuals with responsibilities and commitments, to progress to Master’s level within the field of: Facilities, Property and Asset Management. The programme is modular, containing both core and elective options within Part One and a Dissertation; generally work related, in Part Two. The latter is often completed remotely but with full workplace support being provided by an experienced supervision team and specialist University support staff.

This is the only post-graduate F.M. related qualification offered within an educational establishment in Wales and the south-west of England. The programme is eminently suited to those working within or aspiring towards a senior management position, addresses cutting edge, strategic and operational issues that impact upon estates, property, facilities and corporate business services. The current mode of attendance for Part One occurs at the Mount Pleasant campus in Swansea, generally taking place on a Wednesday afternoon, between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.

You’ll prepare for the challenges of the changing and increasingly global construction industry with a focus on the financial, planning and management aspects of a project life cycle. You’ll explore construction processes from inception and feasibility, design, contact and construction through to commissioning, maintenance, renewal and decommissioning. The philosophy of the course is to develop a “whole life” understanding of constructed facilities and infrastructure.

A choice of optional modules will allow you to strengthen existing technical and engineering skills, or gain an understanding of a new topic. You’ll benefit from the expertise of our Institute for Resilient Infrastructure, the Institute for Public Health and Environmental Engineering and the active research groups across the Faculty of Engineering.

Course content

Throughout the programme you’ll gain an understanding of the different aspects of project management within the construction industry. You’ll learn about common project management tools and techniques, then put this into the “whole project” context and consider when and how to use them.

At the same time, you’ll consider risk management and its role during the project lifecycle. Whole Life Asset Management examines the “whole life management” of infrastructure, with additional focus on operations, maintenance, renewal and decommissioning.

The Applied Construction Management module explores the management process during the execution phase of projects. Another core module will introduce you to a variety of procurement strategies to keep projects running effectively. You’ll also choose from a range of optional modules to focus on topics that suit your interests and career plans.

Over the summer months you’ll work with your supervisor to complete your independent research project – a chance to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you’ve gained and perhaps specialise in an area that relates to your career ambitions.

People are the most valuable asset of every company and now more than ever, organisations are committed to the happiness and retention of great employees. The Human Resources Management program focuses on managing people from a social, cultural and political point of view while developing your personal skills, such as group working and time management. You will learn the methods of effective talent scouting and management, as well as the trends and techniques necessary to build a top-notch team of professionals.

Course structure

The MBA in Human Resources Management program lasts one year, divided into three terms. Each term students complete five courses, including industrial visits and guest speaker sessions. In order to graduate, students must complete a management research methods module and a dissertation subject in addition to the other courses.
