Special features

Reliability Engineering & Asset Management offers a flexible approach to learning as follows:

Full-time in attendanceDirect Taught )

Students undertake eight units. Each taught unit lasts one week and is followed by time for coursework and revision for examinations. Students start work immediately on their project and the programme is completed in one year.

Part time in attendanceDirect Taught )

Students undertake eight units. Each taught unit lasts one week and is followed by time for coursework and revision for examinations. Students start work on their project in the final year and this option is completed in three years.

Part time by Distance Learning

Students undertake eight units, all in distance learning format, each of about three months duration. Teaching will begin with a short introduction allowing students to acclimatise to the Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard 9. The programme is complete after three years. Students undertake their project in the final year.

Teaching and learning

The coherent atmosphere in the classroom is to maintain high standards and quality and as such places are limited. Our teaching methods are similar to knowledge transfer concepts as well as case studies without involving much mathematical theories.

Teaching style

Direct Taught - Full and Part time

Each course unit runs for an intensive week-long period and tuition takes place at the University.

Distance Learning

For part-time Distance Learning students, the entire course is delivered via Blackboard, an online virtual learning environment. Two course units per semester are undertaken on-line accessing web-based teaching material which will include text, images, video and animation in parallel, over a three month period. Most importantly web-based teaching generates an interactive environment with real, active communication between students and staff and between groups of students throughout the programme. Distance Learning students will need to visit the University for a 2-day residential per semester for face-to-face discussion with their Unit leader .

Coursework and assessment

Each taught unit of the programme is followed by an assignment which is applied in the work place for part-time students or at the university for full-time students plus an examination either at the University or at higher education institute or British Council in the student's home country.

Assessment is by written examination and assignment. The assignment, which follows the taught element of the unit, accounts for 50% of the total marks, the examination 35% and an in-unit assignment the remaining 15%.

Examination period

Semester 1 - 2nd and 3rd week of January

Semester 2 - 2nd and 3rd week of May

Dissertation Project

The dissertation project is intended to address a real issue in Reliability Engineering and Asset Management and is studied in depth, relating problems in the field to theory, case studies and solution reported in the literature, and often creating innovative proposals and field trials. All students have access to laboratory resources where appropriate.

Course unit details

REAM is a modular programme which consists of eight units, some of which include field and lab work followed by a major project. The earlier units address the management of the maintenance process, including such topics as asset management and maintenance strategy; asset maintenance systems and condition monitoring. Later more specialised units deal with auditing, advanced vibration monitoring, reliability and risk. Units on the full time programme are direct taught, however, part time students can choose either direct taught or web-based distance learning.

All delivery modes cover the same syllabus and lead to the same qualification. View examples of programme structures of individual degree programmes; Full-time , Part-time and Distance Learning . Please see examples of past dissertation projects .

What you study

The Master in Management programme consists of four semesters with a total of 120 ECTS credits. These semesters can be completed at our European campuses (Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Turin and Warsaw) or at one of our 100 partner universities worldwide.

The first year is focused on advanced learning within the different fields of intercultural management through core modules.

The second year is used to concentrate on one or two options, and is also used for the writing of a Master thesis on a topic of the student’s choice. Further to this, students can choose from the rich catalogue of electives to further customise their learning experience and plan their professional career paths. Language courses are also a part of the Master in Management programme.

Beside the academic courses, 40 weeks of internships are integrated into the programme. Students can do these internships either in their countries of study or in a third country.

Alongside the core courses, electives and options, all students will participate in five thematic seminars. These are key elements in the Master in Management programme, with all current students coming together to benefit from the internationality of both the courses and their fellow participants.

The Pre-Master Year is devoted to gaining insight into the fundamentals of management, including introductory and advanced concepts to foster an understanding of the world of business. There are also courses in social sciences, law, economics and foreign languages. The Pre-Master Year combines core modules, interdisciplinary projects and an internship. Students can spend the Pre-Master Year in Paris (in French or English) or Turin (in English). It is for students who have a minimum of two years of university education.

This fast-track conversion course combines academic excellence with the explicit development of the transferable skills essential for a career in real estate whether in the private or public sectors, in the UK or internationally.

There are a number of course units common to the MSc Real Estate Asset Management and MSc Real Estate Development that provide a sound grounding in real estate from the perspectives of investor, developer, occupier and the broader society. You then follow specific course units, depending on the specialist route chosen, with the ability to choose further optional units to reflect your own particular interests.

A residential fieldtrip to London is an integral part of the programme and there is an optional fieldtrip to another major European city.

It is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors under its Valuation, Commercial Property, Residential and Planning & Development pathways.

Aims

You will

  • gain the necessary framework of knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to pursue a successful career in the real estate field.
  • develop your capacity for critical thinking and ability to present sound, well-justified arguments and solutions to complex problems, recognising the interconnected nature of real estate practice.
  • develop commercial awareness in conjunction with technical knowledge and skills to enable you to take a leading role in addressing the challenges facing the real estate industry.
  • be able to draw upon the world-class research and practical experience of the School of Environment, Education and Development, together with our excellent links with business and the public sector, enabling you to explore new insights into the areas of sustainable development and strategic management of the built environment.

Special features

One of the special features of our Masters programmes is the opportunity to work on a live consultancy project. Working with industry partners, students will complete a piece of work within a real-world professional environment.

A comprehensive range of site visits, guest lectures and presentations from business and public organisations are an integral part of the course and networking opportunities are strongly promoted.

An overseas field visit is an optional part of the programme if students choose to undertake the relevant optional course unit: International Planning (Field Visit). The cost of the visit is partly covered by the course fee but there is a student contribution towards the cost of the trip, depending on the venue. Recent fieldtrip locations have included Barcelona, Amsterdam, Belfast, Dublin and Toronto. Countries to be visited may change their immigration and visa regulations at short notice. The School of Environment, Education and Development cannot guarantee that where visas are required for the field course, they will be granted but will ensure that, in the unlikely event that a visa is refused, affected students are not academically disadvantaged.

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months.  There are no evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of this course are assessed by a variety of methods, including essays, report-writing, project portfolios and presentations. The majority of assessment is based on individual work with an element of collaborative project work. After the taught-element of the course, over the summer, you will undertake a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, overseen by an appropriate supervisor.

Facilities

The Arthur Lewis Building and Humanities Bridgeford Street provide excellent resources including analytical laboratories, studio facilities, workshops, seminar rooms, an on-site cafe and dedicated computer clusters including GIS facilities.

Disability support

Practical support and advice for current students and applicants is available from the Disability Advisory and Support Service. Email:

Career opportunities

The programme prepares students for employment in real estate professional practice, in the UK or internationally. Potential careers could be in both the private and public sector ranging across global consultancies, investment advisors and corporate organisations to regional property practices and development companies to government agencies or even your own real estate business. Recent graduates have gone on to work for consultancies including CBRE in UK and China, JLL, Savills, Cushman & Wakefield, Colliers International and Real Estate companies such as Grosvenor, Kier, Bruntwood and Wanda.

Integrated MBA study with specialist facilities management modules

To be a successful leader, you need to understand, implement and integrate the current fundamental concepts of management, and have insights from differing professional perspectives. You gain this knowledge on our course by studying core MBA subjects within four integrated modules.

Completing an integrated module means that instead of studying a topic such as finance in isolation, you study finance together with marketing and decision making. Our approach replicates the real world where strategic decisions span multiple business areas, providing you with a richer and more realistic learning experience.

The core MBA modules are complemented by a range of specialist facilities management modules such as • delivering strategic facilities management • strategic property asset management • strategic project management.

This supports the development of your leadership and management skills. By transferring what you learn from the course, you can raise the profile of facilities management and the contribution it makes to the effectiveness of your organisation.

Projects tailored to your organisation's needs

We tailor assignments and projects to the needs of your organisation or your own areas of interest, which maximises the value of your studies. Your organisation also has the opportunity to provide input into your learning and contribute to your development.

You also complete a dissertation/consultancy project that involves investigating a current major issue from within your organisation.

Applied learning through case studies

As you progress through the course you apply your learning by problem-solving real or simulated case studies. This helps you to identify and deal with links and tensions between different areas of an organisation.

You enhance your leadership skills by encountering and managing varying, often competing, perspectives on management issues. Case studies enable you to practice and assess the impact of real-time decision making, embedding and demonstrating the skills you need during your career.

Flexible course design

The course is designed to be flexible so that you can work comfortably with your existing commitments. We use university-based block study with self managed study time, so you can easily complete the course from anywhere within the UK or overseas. You can also study modules as and when it is suits you, enabling you to progress at a pace that meets your needs.

Multi-professional learning community

When you study an Executive MBA at Sheffield Hallam University you join a learning community of managers and leaders from across a range of professions and industry backgrounds. This provides you with excellent networking opportunities and you can benefit from seeing different perspectives and solutions to managerial challenges.

Critical self-awareness

At the diploma stage of the course, you have the opportunity to complete psychometric testing, which can help you increase your critical self-awareness, better understand your skills and identify areas for development.

Professional recognition

This course is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). It is also accredited by the Chartered Management Institute and successful graduates gain Chartered Manager status (subject to application).

This course is accredited by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM). Successful completion of the MBA gives you the formal professional certified membership (CBIFM).

We are a recognised British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) centre and we offer a Postgraduate Certificate with a level 7 BIFM Diploma in Facilities Management.

Course structure

Each module involves a three-day study block and self-managed study time. You complete

  • year one – four modules

This flexible attendance means that the course has minimal impact on your work or personal time and you can be based anywhere in the UK or overseas.

  • leadership, partnership and change within facilities management

Employability

If you are employed in estates or facilities management this qualification equips you with the knowledge and skills to improve your performance in your present job and progress more rapidly up the career ladder in areas such as property and premises management, estate management, facilities and general management.

Completing the Executive MBA enhances your employability by demonstrating your potential for leadership within facilities management, and the ability to deliver solutions to complex operational issues, within an increasingly business-focused and competitive environment.

Our MBAs are highly valued by employers and previous graduates have gone on to develop successful careers in senior management.

Course Overview

The course offers a stimulating part-time pathway, allowing flexibility for individuals with responsibilities and commitments, to progress to Master’s level within the field of: Facilities, Property and Asset Management. The programme is modular, containing both core and elective options within Part One and a Dissertation; generally work related, in Part Two. The latter is often completed remotely but with full workplace support being provided by an experienced supervision team and specialist University support staff.

This is the only post-graduate F.M. related qualification offered within an educational establishment in Wales and the south-west of England. The programme is eminently suited to those working within or aspiring towards a senior management position, addresses cutting edge, strategic and operational issues that impact upon estates, property, facilities and corporate business services. The current mode of attendance for Part One occurs at the Mount Pleasant campus in Swansea, generally taking place on a Wednesday afternoon, between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.

Existing and past students have entered the programme from a range of specialist discipline areas, including engineering, building services, surveying, hotel services, general business administration, hard and soft F.M. property, project management, town planning, health-care etc. Their employers have included international PLCs, central government, local authorities, professional practices, Universities, Further Education colleges, Housing Associations, outsourced F.M. organisations, Welsh Government Agencies etc.

Modules

Candidates study at a high level, a range of inter-related topics that will typically include:
-Strategic Property Management and Procurement,
-Management of Human and Organisational Resources,
-Building Maintenance and Property Asset Management,
-Services and Energy Performance of Buildings
-Health & Safety Management
-Research Methodology
-Dissertation

Individual modules can be studied on a semester basis to meet an individual or professional body’s CPD requirements, and used to build subsequently onwards to more formal academic qualifications.

Key Features

Effective FM is critical where highly serviced buildings and spaces are provided but has many other applications that embrace the commercial property, housing and business support areas. Many candidates use the programme to enhance their management and business skills whilst underpinning technical and professional subject knowledge, in areas such as the environment, asset management and building technologies, waste management, energy use, health and safety as well as developing core business and people management skills.

Few who currently operate in this fast moving field have received formal training or qualifications within this highly rewarding industry and hence major opportunities exist for Master’s graduates.

Assessment

Assessment is via industry related case study based assignments, some formal examinations, presentations to panels and a dissertation that can be very closely focussed to the candidate’s current employment or area of career aspiration.

Career Opportunities

Most candidates are employed full-time and a number of students past and present have gained considerable career enhancements, as a consequence of their formal studies with the University. Candidates work for major international PLCs, central and local government funded bodies/agencies, social housing, education and health-care.

Students will be resident and undertake full-time study in the UK. Under both, the 9 and 12-month programmes students take compulsory and/or elective modules in Part 2.

The 12 month option involves taking an elective 20 credit module between July and August, which would also mean a 20 credit reduction in the number of taught modules taken in the spring term.

After completion, our graduates are qualified to work in a variety of investment functions, including as portfolio managers, hedge fund managers and traders, within a diverse range of organisations such as investment banks, regulators, fund management firms and consultants.
