Core teaching weaves together a range of different approaches to the cultural industries: high-level business management, creative entrepreneurship, art and culture fundraising, event management, and design and creative marketing.

This MBA program is designed to develop students’ understanding of the art and performing arts sectors and develop professional skills in arts management and business. Professional studies are underpinned by courses on the history of twentieth century art and theatre, providing students with a hands-on experience of the artistic and cultural backgrounds.

This intensive twelve-month program is designed to develop students’ understanding of the art and performing arts sectors, while developing their professional skills in arts management and business, in order to become future managers of arts and cultural institutions and future entrepreneurs in the cultural industries. Throughout the year, students develop a professional project that they present in front of a jury, in validation of the Titre I diploma.

The course offers a unique opportunity to engage with an extensive range of regional, national and international arts and cultural organization covering the full range of the creative industries from dance, theatre and music to digital creativity, the fine arts and fashion to heritage, museums and cultural tourism.

Culture, the arts and the creative industries in the UK are estimated to be worth around £36 billion to our economy – our creative and cultural excellence plays a crucial role in our national identity, and is recognized globally.

In the 21st century, culture and arts policy and practice are being shaped against a background of enormous change and challenge across the creative sectors. Arts managers and administrators are instrumental in the governance and sustainability of the creative sectors. From policy makers to caretakers of arts buildings and infrastructure, from pioneers of economic innovation to leaders of excellence in creative practice, cultural leaders and managers of the arts will increasingly need to be flexible, responsive and imaginative practitioners, equally comfortable in a variety of settings, and adept at working in partnership with a wide range of organisations. They will need to be people who see the arts and culture as a vital part of the wider economy.

Bath, a relatively small city with a resident population of about 80,000, attracts over 4 million visitors every year. It hosts an annual series of internationally renowned arts and cultural festivals, has been a fashionable spa for leisure and pleasure since the 18th century, and is a World Heritage Site with a rich offering of museums and galleries. It is also a city at the heart of the South West, ideally situated between Bristol and London on the M4 high tech and creative industries ‘corridor’.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course builds on your previous experience and background, expanding your professional arts knowledge, management skills, entrepreneurial thinking, and creative leadership skills. Designed and delivered in close collaboration with leading arts organisations, the course will provide you with the theoretical framework, appropriate skills and practical experience to meet the challenges of working in your chosen field.

The modules cover theory, critical thinking, skills development and practical experience; they have been designed to allow you to demonstrate an ability to analyse historic and current debates in and about culture and the arts; to apply this analysis to contemporary practice, structures, funding and participation; and to relate both to the complex range of activities involved in ‘managing the arts’.

The programme is offered in a modular format. You will take a mix of taught modules in the first two trimesters (120 credits), including a compulsory work-placement and complete a dissertation or placement-based project in the third trimester (60 credits). To achieve the MA you will need to complete 180 credits in total.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

The course will enable you to combine academic study with placements and practical work, and to accommodate the needs of those in paid employment. Learning is encouraged through participation in a wide variety of activities including lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, online activity and discussion, work-based learning, and research projects. Each module will include contributions from leaders in their field, whether for short lectures or longer workshops; a number of them will continue to act as mentors and help guide you through your placement project or final dissertation. The subject for this will be developed in consultation with the course leader and, where relevant, with your placement host.

Access to key thinkers and doers is an integral part of the course. As well as reflecting on the uncertainties of the moment, the course is intended to introduce you to people who are dealing with them for real.

Face-to-face contact during tutorials and workshops is intended to encourage and facilitate peer-support and shared learning; there will be opportunities for joint and group working.

Internship

You choose one 'Shared Module', and then you take the Management and Professional modules which are broken up into Business Planning for Arts Organisations and an Internship.

The Shared Modules will allow you to continue to develop your understanding of a creative practice, or a specialist area of management. This module, therefore, comprises studies in one area of creative practice eg. Music, Theatre and Performance, Visual Arts, Entrepreneurship, or Cultural Diplomacy. (For some modules it will be necessary for a student to have a background in the area they wish to study as they are primarily concerned with the discipline rather than its administration/management – for example in music).

Summer term

Taught one day a week, you will have lectures and seminars that cover contemporary arts management issues such as: copyright and performing rights; touring; cultural leadership and diplomacy; and further develops some areas introduced earlier in the year, such as arts and tourism. Our MSc Leadership and Development focuses on the issues that engage leadership as a central factor in the dynamics of development. The programme is presented against the background of the increasing interconnectedness of leadership to the developmental challenges that confront developing societies.

It engages various manifestations of leadership such as that of key individuals; and that of such institutions as the state and key international development organisations and networks. Our programme undertakes a detailed study of the various developmental paradigms using the lens of leadership within its key constituency of developing societies with some references to emerging economies and the developed world. In addition to the thematic focus on development and leadership, our programme engages area studies as it cross-references various developing regions including Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Our programme will appeal specifically to those who have an interest in understanding how leadership patterns interact with historical factors, local cultures and global influences as they inform and are informed by development outcomes and processes across the world.

Our programme provides high-quality postgraduate training that builds the capacity for critical analysis, independent judgement and engagement with critical audiences on leadership and development.

Portfolio

In addition to the general application materials required by the University of Alabama Graduate School and the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy & Technology Studies, applicants must construct an application portfolio, as required by Ala. Admin. Code §290-3-3-.48(1)(b). For entry into a cohort beginning in the Summer Term, the application portfolio is due in the Department by April 1. Assessment Center

The purpose of the Assessment Center is to first fulfill the regulatory requirement of a face-to-face interview with each applicant. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This unique programme is aimed at creative producers and directors and those who train and work with actors and performers to develop and direct their skills.

The programme offers five specialist pathways, including actor training, choreography and movement direction, directing, musical theatre creation, and practices of voice and singing, and you will also have the opportunity to develop a specialist practice within your chosen pathway.

The programme is primarily designed for graduates in drama, theatre and dance from universities and conservatoires, but will also appeal to those who have established themselves professionally and wish to refresh their skills and perspectives and take on leadership, coaching, creative or directing roles.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time over two academic years. It consists of eight taught modules and an Advanced Creative Practice module.

Pathways

Actor Training pathway
The specialist modules for this pathway are designed to produce a versatile and effective actor trainer with the strategies and skills required to enhance and facilitate an actor’s progress. Students will examine and contextualise a number of acting methodologies to develop their own comprehensive approach to professional practice.

Movement Direction and Choreography pathway
Students on this pathway follow and practically investigate a number of techniques and ideas dealing with onstage physicality. The focus is also on the development of movement language, through the investigation of the ideas and practices of seminal dance-based ideas (Laban, Bausch, Cunningham, Fosse, Graham, Horton, etc.) and methods for working with music and sound.

Practices of Voice and Singing pathway
This pathway brings together study and practice in both singing and voice, in order to create a new paradigm for teaching and coaching in these fields, enabling students to expand, develop and reflect on their coaching styles.

Directing pathway
This programme is a practice-led pathway incorporating methodologies and techniques that focus on approaches to theatre directing, dramaturgy, collaboration with other practitioners.

Musical Theatre Creation pathway
This pathway is designed for those who wish to study writing, and creative roles specifically in Musical Theatre. These might be as a director, choreographer, composer, librettist, musical director or creative producer.

FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT

The School of Arts facilities include the 200-seat theatre in the Ivy Arts Centre, dark and light studios, digital creation stations and editing facilities, scenic, props and costume workshops, and interconnected sound recording and music facilities.

Teaching and workshop activity takes place largely in GSA’s dedicated rehearsal rooms, performance studios and design workshops. Lectures, presentations and seminars will occur in rooms across campus.

The University Library contains the majority of set texts, key journals, scripts, play texts and video materials necessary for the programme. Students have access to extensive facilities through the virtual learning environment, SurreyLearn, and IT Services.

Additional support is available in the Learning Resource Centre in the University Library.

Equipment is provided on a project-by-project basis according to the nature of the work in hand and the parameters of the project, which are negotiated with the tutor.

Facilities and equipment for production work will be booked by students according to specific project briefings and advertised resource parameters.

Academic support is provided by way of ongoing contact with the programme director and module leaders, group briefings and feedback, individual tutorials, and mentoring.

The programme makes use of a peer feedback system designed to provide a useful and supportive account of areas of strength and effectiveness, along with areas for improvement.

You are encouraged to identify personal learning and creative objectives that can be pursued in alignment with group project work.

RESEARCH

The School of Arts includes study in dance, digital arts, film, music, sound and theatre, with research activity in all areas, often with significant interdisciplinary connections.

With an integrated approach that comprises documentation, analysis and performance, Surrey’s agenda for research aims to engage critically with the past and present, while rigorously articulating new frameworks for understanding and practising the arts and culture in the twenty-first century.

Research infrastructure includes the Digital World Research Centre and the Laban Archive in the National Resource Centre for Dance (NRCD).

The School of Arts hosts and supports established research centres, research groupings and networks as well as individual research projects. Delivery Model

Residency
This two-year Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration and Leadership program is comprised of one mandatory two-week on-campus residency, a second residency that can be completed on-campus or online and distance learning courses.

The residency is a carefully designed period of intense academic study in which students complete two courses – Leading and Learning in Higher Education and Approaches to Educational Research in Higher Education.

The schedule of instruction and studying during the residency is structured to optimize the face-to-face access to instructors, develop networks with fellow students, and access the support services of the university if required. The typical daily schedule is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Team meetings, homework, and readings are done outside of these hours.

Online Learning
Distance courses are delivered entirely online through innovative, easy to use Internet technologies. Participants draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to work towards the electronic submission of assignments. Prior to the beginning of each course, students are provided with a list of resources including textbooks and/or online readings, plus a detailed course schedule. Learning activities and assignments are designed to allow participants to identify the practical applications of the course content and to work with others to construct both a personal and shared meaning from their experiences.

Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 10 hours per week. Our course will equip experienced professionals with the knowledge and capability to meet the demands of data centre leadership.

Data centres are fast-moving, complex businesses that need decisive, knowledgeable leaders. Our MA course aims to give practising data centre managers the opportunity to develop and advance their leadership abilities.

While our MA includes technical elements, it’s not designed to be a technical course. Rather, it takes broad-based contemporary business theory and applies it to data centre management to help you apply your learning effectively and immediately.

As all of our students continue to work while studying, you’ll have the opportunity to look at your current work and past professional experience to consider how you can apply what you’ve learnt in practice. This module sets the scene for the course by helping you develop the aptitude and knowledge needed to lead successful data centre teams, departments and companies. This module looks at topics such as strategic analysis, change management and organisational dynamics, as well as how to foster innovation within the business.

Finance for Non Financial Managers
Finance is a core element of any business activity and a key element of business decisions. Therefore, having a deeper understanding of financial management will enhance your contribution to the business and increase your influence within the company.

Sustainable Design for High Capacity Data Centres
The design of data centres can have a huge influence of their efficiency and sustainability. Leaders who can anticipate and manage future trends in design and sustainability will have an advantage in a fast moving industry. This module will bring you the most up to date thinking on data centre design, while also having a strong emphasis on management and monitoring to maximise efficiency and sustainability.

Year 2 - Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip)

Data Centre Infrastructure Management, Security and Disaster Recovery
What are the issues when managing complex resources? What strategies can be used to ensure security, identify risk and vulnerability, and mitigate against these? How can you plan for disasters, and can you plans be built with future developments in mind? This module takes these questions and more, helping you to develop answers in the context of your own work.

HRM and Organisational Capability Development
This module looks at managing human resources from the leader’s perspective. You will look at how organisational structures influence behaviour, strategies for managing talented individuals, how to manage contingent labour and organisational performance in a dynamic environment.

Decision Making in Critical Services
Data centres are mission critical environments, experiencing high levels of complexity and change. Due to this, the data centre context is highly sensitive to the outcomes of decisions, and it is important that leaders have the knowledge and capacity to consider and implement complex decisions. This module will give you the opportunity to develop your decision making capabilities, particularly where decision outcomes may be disruptive, innovative or untested in current contexts.

Year 3 – Master of Arts Degree (MA)

Contemporary Issues in Leadership and Management
The data centre industry is a dynamic environment, with new issues emerging as technology develops, political influences change and the global economic situation evolves. These factors all impact on day-to-day leadership and management within the industry. This module will help you to build your own understanding of issues that influence the industry, develop your responses and grow as a thought leader.

Research Methods for Business and Management
Research skills are important in business as well as academia. Producing high quality research can drive innovation and enterprise and form a crucial part of the professional’s portfolio of capability. This module will enable you to develop the key project management and data analysis skills needed to deliver Masters Level research.

Post Graduate Major Project
This final module builds on the knowledge that you have developed through the course, giving you a chance to produce an in-depth academic study into a topic of your choice. Your project could address an issue in your workplace, or examine a theme in the wider industry. Under our supervision, you will further build your own specialist expertise and ultimately enhance your career development.

Assessment

You will complete an assessed piece of work at the end of each module, and a Postgraduate Major Project in your final year. Your assessed work will be relevant to your job and designed to help you develop your skills, knowledge and career.

This highly praised and unique Masters programme provides those involved in ‘leading’ an opportunity to explore leadership in general and their own leadership in particular, in challenging and exciting ways.

It engages the depth of the latest academic research across a wide spectrum of disciplines from international business and management studies to the creative arts and from philosophy to psychotherapy, enabling you to examine how your leadership changes as the context changes.

You will build on your experience to develop a dynamic, flexible approach to the challenges of leadership for today and for the future.

This is a part time degree programme spread over 18 months, enabling students to continue working whilst studying for their professional Masters degree.

Three years in development and now in its third successful year of teaching, the programme has been life changing for many students and is quickly setting a new standard in leadership studies.
