Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are researchers and/or come from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

MA Philosophy (Philosophy and Art History Pathway)
Drawing on the collaborative and interdisciplinary approach of the School, our new Philosophy and Art History pathway enables students to get a thorough grounding in philosophical aesthetics. You explore issues in aesthetics and their bearing on other areas of philosophy (such as critical theory or existentialism) and Art History (such as aesthetic practices and curating), and profit from the wide-ranging expertise of our staff in both disciplines. This programme is designed for students seeking a distinctive and unique perspective on the arts of the Middle Ages. Visual culture, throughout the medieval period, is addressed from a global viewpoint.

The programme combines study of the arts and their audiences in Europe with those in non-Christian cultures (Islam and China). The main focus is on issues stemming from consideration of cultural exchange and interaction between West and East.

One example is the practice of exchanging gifts, its traditions, diplomatic significance and intellectual consequences. The programme will also consider issues concerning pilgrimage and conquest, and will address questions arising from study of the rise of global trade and travel. These embrace such topics as:

material exchange (e.g. ivory, pigments and silks)
pilgrimage
literature and its uses
artistic and technological exchange
the taste of the exotic

The programme includes the possibility of taking an internship in a museum, public institution or similar organisation.

It aims:

to introduce you to research in medieval history of art at the highest level
to open up issues of global cultural exchange for academic debate
to draw attention to contemporary resonances stemming from study of medieval visual culture
to prepare students for further scholarly research, or for a career working with medieval objects, images or works of art, in museums, libraries, archives, and other collections

Programme structure

This programme is taught through a combination of small-group seminars and tutorials, one-to-one supervision and private study. You will be examined through coursework and a dissertation.

Learning outcomes

The programme seeks to inform students from three vantage points:

an overview of the multiple cultures active within the medieval period
a more specific knowledge of the various points of intersection between these cultures
an in-depth, expertise in of one cultural area with special emphasis on its interactions with other areas
More specifically upon completion of the course, students should have an understanding of how the relationships and connections between cultures are formed and the way in which a specific culture perceived itself, presented itself, as well as how it was perceived abroad as evidenced both in text and images.

More broadly, it is expected students will gain a more considered understanding as to the question of influence within the context of cross-cultural exchange.

Finally, students are expected to gain an understanding of the theories and methodologies relevant to the study of medieval visual culture and inter-cultural studies.

Degree information

Students develop skills for engaging with visual materials and gain historical knowledge, enabling them to interpret artefacts in relation to their social and cultural contexts. Teaching and learning

LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law deals with the global and regional regulation of international trade, structuring and managing international business transactions, and the economic foundations of trade and corporate law.

Professional Module Exemptions

The Chartered Banker Institute (CBI) has recognised masters programmes offered by the School of Economics and Finance for advanced standing for the Chartered Banker Diploma. Graduates can proceed directly to the Chartered Banker Diploma with no requirement for prior underpinning study, recognising the high level of commonality of elements within LLM programme content against the CBI’s Diploma modules.

Students on the LLM programme who take both the QLLM136 Ethics in Business and in Finance and QLLM007 Banking Law modules will be eligible for exemption from the Chartered Banker Diploma compulsory module: Professionalism Regulation and Ethics.

Shipping is a key link in the global supply chain and accounts for over 95 per cent of all imports and exports. With the growing demand of a global population, levels of international trade have dramatically increased over the last four decades. In the UK alone, this translates to a contribution of around £31 billion for the UK economy and the maritime industry is responsible for one in every 50 jobs. With the world shipping fleet growing at just under four per cent per year and anticipated annual growth in seaborne trade demand currently sitting at three-four per cent, the employment opportunities within the maritime sector look set to expand.

The programme -

This stimulating and intellectually challenging course helps to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to operate successfully within the international maritime industry.

The course has a strong business focus and explores the complex factors involved in the management of ships and shipping operations worldwide. Students will also reflect on the key aspects of maritime law, operations and risk management techniques and look at the impact of international trade on management strategies in the industry.

An important element of the course is the accreditation by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS). Depending on their chosen pathway, students on this master’s programme may be exempt from some of the Institute’s professional exams. The course is also validated by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).

Taught by a highly skilled team with wide-ranging experience in the maritime industry, the course has been designed in conjunction with key maritime industry organisations to enable you to graduate with the necessary knowledge and work-based skills that will enhance students’ career prospects.

There is also a strong emphasis on research and you’ll complete a thesis under supervision.

Assessment:

The Master in Arts Management is divided into two operational modules, characterised by a distinct course of study in relation to the city in which it takes place, each involving an examination and a final project. Some of the subjects of the course cut across the modules, while others are specific and unique to each location.

The Master is held in partnership with the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, the MIBAC (Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities) in Rome and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

At the end of the course, students will be ready to work in arts and cultural companies and institutions (e.g. museums, foundations, galleries, festivals, auction houses), in the so-called cultural sectors (national and international cultural institutions, profit and nonprofit), in areas related to contemporary art and with large enterprises investing in the cultural market (banks, insurance companies, banking institutions, event management companies, trade fair organisations, art foundations, exhibition production companies, or companies operating in the communication world).

FLORENCE - Design of exhibitions and events
The Florence module focuses on developing specific skills to manage the different organisational phases of a Cultural event: from the design to the identification of partners and sponsors, to communication management and content creation. As a group, with the support of teachers and the course coordinator, students will plan and create one or more cultural events with real clients.

ROME - Art Direction: focus on festivals
The goal of this module is to develop a new approach to artistic heritage management. The Master’s semester in Rome combines the huge culture that the city plays at international level with the vivacity of the backgrounds that characterises its urban culture. With the support of new technologies, students will explore possible cultural convergences that stimulate interest and participation.

VENICE - 1 week Workshop
In partnership with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, students will participate in a one-week workshop in Venice. They will visit the main institutions and meet the professionals of the Peggy Guggenheim.

Duration of Programme

The minimum period of study is 3 semesters and the maximum period of study is 8 semesters. Each academic year consists of two semesters, commencing in September (Semester I) and February (Semester II) of each year.

Programme by Dissertation

The Faculty also offers the Master of Economics programme fully by dissertation. This programme is only open to graduates with exceptionally good qualifications (First Class Honours or CGPA of at least 3.7), and has experience in academic writing (proof of publication is necessary). This programme requires students to submit a dissertation of not exceeding 60,000 words at the end of the programme. In addition, the Faculty may set as a requirement for a candidate to follow prescribed courses. Those interested in the programme is advised to contact the Faculty for further details.

The faculty is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as two computer teaching laboratories equipped with LCD and statistical software with a total capacity for 105 students, a student computer laboratory for 51 students and five lecture theatres.

In addition, the beautiful new building for postgraduate studies, houses 15 seminar rooms, a computer laboratory with a capacity for 54 computer workstations, 2 conference halls with a capacity of 100 persons each and 3 wireless LAN coverage (WiFi) zones within the faculty.

- Maritime professionals need to be skilled in identifying and analysing problems to lead changes in policy or practices. You’ll develop these skills by identifying, planning and implementing research in your chosen area, and analysing and communicating the findings.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course is taught by a mix of lectures, seminars, simulation and negotiation exercises, problem-based learning and field work.

There is also a strong emphasis on research and you’ll complete a thesis under supervision.

Work experience:

There are opportunities to visit external organisations and facilities to see the practical application of learning from the course. Some of these are funded outside of the course fees.

Assessment:

Assessment may include presentations, written coursework and/or an examination. The exact mix depends on the unit. You’ll also complete a 15,000- to 20,000-word research dissertation on a relevant topic.

Our maritime systems laboratories have state-of-the-art IT systems to manage maritime resources and data, including geographic information systems (GIS).

We organise an annual international field trip to the Port of Rotterdam.

Graduation costs -

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

Increasing international trade and finance is opening up new opportunities for growth of firms, regions and countries. Strategies of governments and firms need to be constantly aligned to quickly adapt to changing circumstances. In the one-year Master's degree in International Economics and Business you will learn the tools to grasp the complex relationships between firm behaviour and economic growth in regions and countries.

You will use state-of-the-art theories to discover the impact of global trade on economic growth and welfare.
