You'll study the nature of human development and health and disability in art therapy as part of your development to relate theory and research to practice. While you're doing your clinical placements you'll be supervised by an appropriate therapist and also attend a reflective practice group, which will be led by a state registered art therapist.

You'll take part in personal therapy, for a minimum of one hour each week throughout the course, to meet the professional registration requirements. This can be either individual or group therapy.

Your assessments will be through written assignments, verbal presentations, production of artwork and reports based on your performance in the clinical settings.

Teaching and learning

MSc in Occupational Therapy is taught alongside the well-established and highly-regarded BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy.

Pre-registration Masters students will be taught alongside the undergraduate students in all occupational therapy specific modules. These will be identified with different module numbers and names to those of the undergraduate programme. This dual level teaching in classroom will provide you with the opportunity to learn the core skills and specific attributes of occupational therapy alongside the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy students.

However, the pre-registration Masters students are provided with an enhanced level 7 learning experience with module specific tutorials to explore a more critical and evidence based approach to the subject matter and thus develop professional competence in academic, research and digital literacy, critical thinking and personal self-awareness.

The Msc/PgDip Occupational Therapy course is designed to enable you to develop the required competencies, skills and standards of proficiency required to be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as an occupational therapist.

The accelerated design of the course allows the full-time professional training to be condensed into two years, rather than the traditional three-year route. This experience acts as good preparation for entering the stimulating and evolving world of health and social care as a qualified member of the workforce.

A key feature of this course is the problem-based learning approach which involves you working in a small group with a shared responsibility for meeting the learning outcomes for each module.

Occupational Therapy at LSBU has a dedicated team of tutors who utilise their wealth of knowledge, skills and clinical experiences of working in health and social care to inform the teaching programme. - Introduction to occupation
This module develops an understanding of the healthy individual across the age range. You will explore people's roles and relationships and their engagement in occupation/activity. The environments in which individuals participate such as; home, school, and community will be considered. Occupational therapy philosophy will be introduced and the scope of the profession explored. An understanding of relevant underpinning knowledge such as: human development, psychosocial theories, anatomy and physiology will be developed. Professional ethics and behaviour will also be introduced.

- Assessment of occupational performance
In this module the focus is on the assessment phase of the occupational therapy (OT) process. You will be able to appraise the concepts of assessment and evaluate standardised and non-standardised assessments. Occupational/activity analysis is introduced and evidence-based practice skills begin to develop. This module will explore common experiences associated with the ageing process.

- Enabling occupational performance and participation 1
This module focuses on the processes of problem identification, goal setting and intervention planning and introduces intervention strategies. You will continue to develop knowledge of theories and models influencing Occupational Therapy practice. Evidence-based practice begins to emerge more strongly.

Year 2:

This module will build on knowledge and skills in the intervention planning and intervention stages of the OT process. You will be able to draw on the evidence base when selecting and implementing intervention strategies.;

It will also consolidate knowledge and skills in relation to the whole OT Process. This module also develops understanding of environments and how they can be adapted to enhance occupational performance from the perspective of a child. These will be explored in the context of disability, inclusion, occupational identity and performance.

- Leadership and service innovation in occupational therapy
This module focuses on entrepreneurship, service innovation and development, it consolidates knowledge and skills related to personal management and prepares you to manage the complexities of a dynamic health and social care environment. The development of professional identity will also be explored.

- Research and scholarship in occupational therapy (MSc qualification only)
This is an optional module for the award of a preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy. Students who pass two out of three first year modules on the first attempt and achieve the required marks are given the option to enrol on Research and scholarship in occupational therapy module. This module is the equivalent to three modules and runs concurrent with other second year modules and a placement. Successful completion of this and the six postgraduate modules will result in being awarded preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy.

All modules are assessed by a mix of written assignments, case studies, critical review, presentations, examinations, practice placements and a research proposal (MSc students only).

Employability

As well as the practical skills required to work as an occupational therapist, this course course develops the employability skills needed for a successful career, including verbal and written communication, negotiation and liaison, team work, organisation and self-management, leadership and management, and personal resilience as well as the ability to work with a diverse range of people whilst demonstrating the values and attributes as described in the NHS constitution.

- Occupational therapy as a career
On graduating you are eligible to apply for registration as an occupational therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This allows you to practice as an occupational therapist within the NHS, community services and local authorities, as well as social enterprises and the private sector. Other settings include prisons, residential and nursing homes, schools and social services.

- Salary
Occupational therapists beginning their career as allied health professionals in the NHS typically as a Band 5 with a starting salary of about £21,692. Salaries in local government are at similar levels.

Career development offers opportunities to move to higher grades in team leadership, clinical expert, service management and consultant therapist roles. Within the NHS, this can mean salaries in the band 7 and 8 range.

Placements

During the course you are required to successfully complete over 1000 practice placement hours within a broad variety of health and social care settings, meeting the registration requirements of the College of Occupational Therapists and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Structure of placement learning:
Practice placements are in four blocks and are all full-time. You will work under the guidance of an occupational therapist (educator). Placement settings:

The MA Arts Practice course is delivered using specialist facilities in our post-graduate studios which are available seven days a week. The programme makes use of lectures, guest speakers, workshops, demonstrations and tutorials, field trips and visits. The contact time you receive will include weekly workshops or seminars and regular group and individual tutorials. In addition, you will be expected to develop your area of practice independently.

Modules are taught via a combination of group seminars and lectures, with individual one-to-one tutorials taking place regularly to support your progress.

We encourage students to discuss and provide feedback on each other’s work, and to approach assignments in groups where appropriate to develop essential skills in teamwork and project management.

The course acknowledges the value of experience and partnerships to enable employability. Overview

Through lectures, practical workshops, case discussions and theoretical studies, our course will introduce you to a range of approaches to dramatherapy. You’ll reflect on your own practice in group discussions, and be supported by an extensive programme of tutorials and supervisions.

Your studies will focus on intercultural practice, attachment/mother-infant observation and the understanding of how past relationships manifest in current client difficulties – and how they can be worked with through the dramatherapeutic relationship. You’ll also work with music therapists in lectures and performance work, such as Playback Theatre.

Our experiential teaching will focus on your own dramatic autobiographical process, dramatherapy theory, links between theory and practice, and bi-weekly experiential dramatherapy groups. In these, you’ll reflect upon your clinical experiences and the process of becoming a dramatherapist.

You’ll take part in clinical placements in two to three fields, under the supervision of qualified dramatherapists. Your placements could be in community settings, schools, hospitals or hospices, giving you valuable experience of working in a multidisciplinary team and great preparation for employment.

Your final piece of written work will be a Major Project which involves clinical evaluation. In the final oral assessment, you’ll present a piece of clinical work to two examiners, who will assess your overall clinical skills and readiness to practice.

One of our modules includes music therapy, and covers content from our Music Therapy MA course as well as this Dramatherapy MA. On more generic subjects, such as psychoanalytic studies, psychiatry and psychology, you'll work with our music therapy students; where techniques and approaches are specific to each profession you'll be taught separately.

The key purpose of the profession of play therapy is defined by British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT): "Play therapy is the dynamic process between child and play therapist in which the child explores at his or her own pace and with his or her own agenda those issues, past and current, conscious and unconscious, that are affecting the child’'s life in the present. The child'’s inner resources are enabled by the therapeutic alliance to bring about growth and change. Play therapy is child-centred, in which play is the primary medium and speech is the secondary medium."

The MSc Play Therapy aims to educate the next generation of play therapists to enable them to work safely and therapeutically with complex children and families.

Graduates will understand and work with the value of each individual child, the fundamental inter-relatedness of the child'’s physical, emotional and social needs and the power of love and care to transform life chances.

Applicants should possess qualities that enable them to undertake study in an appropriate manner and at the appropriate academic level. Thus the students recruited to this course will be committed, diligent, enthusiastic and possess the skills, curiosity and drive to enhance their knowledge base.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The teaching and learning approaches used encourage you to be an independent, participative learner. These approaches will engage you in lectures, problem-based learning, workshops, small group discussion, seminars, observation and skills practice. The course team aims to enable students to learn from and with others through supportive peer-assessment and feedback, guided by the tutor. There are three play therapy practice placement modules where you will work directly with children and families of increasing complexity. Two modules include clinical observation of a child/children from infanthood to adolescence. Assessment methods include case study analysis, collaborative presentation, observation analysis and play therapy practice placement portfolio.

While as a postgraduate student you will predominantly be working independently, there is a strong structure for academic support. Normally, there are fewer than 20 students in the class ensuring that individuals receive excellent support and benefit from interaction with other students.

Teaching hours and attendance

The course runs over three years part-time. Students attend the learning centre at With Kids in the east end of Glasgow one day a week over the first two years. Students will also undertake play therapy practice placement, observations and attend clinical supervision individually or in small groups. Students are expected to attend their own personal therapy for the duration of the course. 100% attendance is expected at all elements of the MSc Play Therapy.

They also work with people of all ages (not just children) living with a wide range of emotional or physical conditions. While in 2015 the overall majority of play therapists in the UK work in health and the voluntary sector, there is a sizeable number of them working in schools and nurseries. Accreditation of prior learning: The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) encompasses the process whereby one can identify, explore and claim credit for previous certificated and/ or experiential learning. Applicants however will not be able to receive accreditation in lieu of any part of the practice placements throughout the course.

International: Where your honours degree has not been studied in English, you will be required to take an IELTS test receiving an overall score of 7.0 and no individual component score below 6.0.

More about this course

The MSc in Psychological Therapy is the equivalent of Year 1 of the professional doctorate in counselling psychology.

Students who complete all of the Year 1 modules from the doctoral programme but do not complete it fully, can take the award of MSc in Psychological Therapy.

A small number of places are usually available each year for applicants who wish just to apply for the MSc and not the full doctoral programme. This award does not confer eligibility to apply for HPC registration as a counselling psychologist or BPS chartered psychologist status.

However, it may be of interest to individuals seeking to gain experience in the field of counselling psychology or who do not intend to practice in the UK or those seeking to gain a qualification that is supportive of their professional development in a current area of related activity, e.g. assistant psychologists, mental health practitioners, psychotherapists or counsellors.

The same initial admissions criteria (see part 2, section 3) are applied to all applicants, whether they wish to complete the full doctoral programme or just the MSc. Students can also apply to complete smaller numbers of modules from Year 1 of the programme to be eligible for the interim awards of Postgraduate Diploma in Psychological therapy (120 credits) or Postgraduate Certificate in Psychological Therapy/Applied Psychology Studies (60 credits).

Assessment on the course combines a variety of methods that reflect the range of competencies and experience that students develop on the programme. This includes:
-Case studies and process reports to assess students’ ability to effectively plan, implement, reflect on, evaluate and make recommendations regarding psychological interventions, within a recognised model of therapy and service context
-Essays and examinations to assess areas of professional knowledge and understanding
-Practice placement competency evaluations to rate the level of proficiency attained by students in their placement work
-A mid-year review and end-of-year appraisal to monitor students’ performance across the programme and their accrual of the necessary experience
-Research assignments to assess knowledge and understanding of a range psychological research methods
-A reflexive critical literature and proposal to assess students’ ability to appraise the state of knowledge in a professionally relevant topic area and design a coherent research study for the generation of new knowledge
-Attendance monitoring to ensure that students demonstrate adequate engagement with the taught curriculum

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

One of two strands of enquiry in arts practice at masters level (the other beting Arts Practice, Fine Art) the MA Arts Practice (Arts, Health and Wellbeing) course offers students the opportunity to explore their own art practice or to take an outward facing approach, in partnership with others. Students of the course develop the skills to evaluate, critique and implement methodologies, gaining the ability to articulate sound arguments relevant to their practice.

Graduates exploring the role of the Arts in realising health and wellbeing focus on the value of the arts in community engagement and also its impact on the environment. They make a significant contribution to the advancement of Arts in Health within Wales and further afield.

What you will study

The MA Art Practice course runs over two calendar years if you choose part-time study, or one calendar year for full-time study:

Part One
- Critical Studies in the Arts (20 credits)
Learn about systems of enquiry, how to understand and engage with objects and issues that affect your particular domain

- Arts Practice 1 (40 credits)
Develop your skills in your chosen discipline, challenging genre and context to develop an original body of work in either a studio context or placement.

Part Two
- Arts Praxis (40 credits)
Refine and build upon your line of enquiry, develop new skills, producing a body of work within a studio context or placement which demonstrates complexity of understanding.

- Professional Practice in the Arts (20 credits)
Explore entrepreneurial, marketing and management aspects of contemporary practice within a framework of social, political, economic and cultural responsibility

- Major Arts Project (60 credits)
Complete a detailed project demonstrating praxis; an area of research and practice relevant to your concerns, utilising research methods appropriate for an arts scholar and an appropriate means of presentation.

Learning and teaching methods

The MA Art Practice course is delivered using specialist facilities in our post-graduate studios which are available seven days a week. The MA Art Practice course makes use of lectures, guest speakers, workshops, demonstrations and tutorials, field trips and visits (additional costs will apply for field trips and visits). Contact time will include weekly workshops or seminars, and regular group and individual tutorials. You will also be expected to develop your area of practice independently.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The course acknowledges the value of experience and partnerships to enable employability. A key element of the course involves establishing partnerships, internships, residencies and placements with arts organisations and galleries, NHS Trusts, social services, charitable trusts, schools, colleges, care homes and commercial companies to develop these. The course also develops your professional skills and positions your practice within critical and contextual frameworks.

You will have the opportunity to develop your practice and gain experience in the field through practical placements, mentoring and live projects matched to your needs whilst benefiting from specialist facilities and expertise to extend your skill sets.

Graduates can progress to careers in academia, arts administration, artists in residence, arts education, arts and disability, community arts, commissioned works, gallery administration and curatorship, health sector management, public art, studio practice, social services, and youth work.

Assessment methods

You will usually have to complete coursework as you progress, and normally sit exams at the end of each academic year.

Facilities

Practical facilities available to students include an MA base room, computer lab with software for digital imaging and film editing, printmaking studio, ceramics, casting, wood and metal workshops, photographic darkroom and studio.

Learning resources include the campus library, access to online journals and research.

Our MA Art Practice staff are actively engaged in research, they embody a high level of knowledge, expertise and professional experience across a range of arts practices. The theoretical focus of this course encompasses psychodynamic, humanistic, developmental and music-centred approaches to music therapy. Some lectures in theoretical studies are shared with students from Art Psychotherapy. The training is designed to prepare students for work with vulnerable children and adults with a wide range of needs, eg learning disabilities or mental health problems.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Teaching includes practical and academic elements with an emphasis on experiential learning and teaching methods, including lectures, seminars and tutorials. Assessments are both practical and written. The following areas are covered:
■ Therapeutic musical skills, with an emphasis on improvisation, interaction and application in a therapeutic context
■ Relevant psychological, developmental, and music therapy theory
■ Different client groups: knowledge of different areas of need, diagnosis, and work contexts
■ Self-development
■ Observation and critical thinking skills
■ Professional issues, such as ethics and team communication

Placements include work within a variety of settings and in both levels, one day a week is spent on placement. Students are required to meet costs for travel and to provide recording equipment. Personal development is fundamental to therapeutic training and it is a course requirement (and requirement by the Health and Care Professions Council) that students also attend regular personal therapy throughout the course, with a minimum of 40 hours attendance. This work is non-assessed and is a confidential arrangement between therapist and student.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module requires you to attend classes at QMU (over two days) and learn independently. Your attendance requirements at QMU will depend on the module. There will be a further day dedicated to practice placement. Students need to allocate a significant amount of time for independent study.

Links with industry/professional bodies

Part of our strength comes from our location. Being based in Edinburgh means that the course has been developed over time in co operation with key national cultural agencies and other bodies with a strategic interest in the development of arts organisations and festivals. Our location in the ‘festival city’ also allows for strong practical links between the course and the many arts, festival and cultural organisations based in and around Edinburgh, across Scotland and the UK. The course is validated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

On graduation you will be eligible for registration with HCPC, and will be qualified to apply for work in organisations such as the NHS,
education, charitable bodies, social services, or in the private sector. Music therapists are employed throughout the health, education and community sectors. Registered music therapists are eligible for full membership of the British Association for Music Therapy. Several of our graduates have found employment with: Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland; within the NHS; others have successfully created new job opportunities for themselves.
