 Emphasizing practice over theory, the program introduces students to the foundational tools, skills and concepts of the art market, law and business. These are all essential prerequisites for anyone wishing to work in the current global art marketplace. 

The core pedagogical strategy for the Christie's Education, Art, Law and Business program is based on the premise that utilizing the lens of commerce and law to view art and the art market will serve to enhance our understanding of how the global art market functions. Through this non-traditional approach to the study and examination of art and art markets, students will develop uncommon insight into the dynamics that influence markets.

Our program goal is the training of students across the three disciplines of art, law and business resulting in graduates who are equally conversant in art and in commerce and who, therefore, will have the necessary transferable skills to make a smooth professional transition into the global art world. With unparalleled access access to art market professionals working at Christie's, students will learn from and interface with, the current leading practitioners of the art market. As part of the curriculum, students will travel to domestic and international art destinations to meet with professionals working across the art market landscape, including art fairs, museums, special exhibitions, conferences, galleries and art investment vehicles.

Over 15 months of intensive study, students take a combined 40 credits to complete their degree. The program concludes with a final term that is exclusively focused on a mandatory internship and an independent capstone project that are each instrumental in helping students to activate their professional careers.

The growth of the arts and the creative industries has created a need for well qualified arts administrators. This MA has the potential to shape a new breed of professionals in the arts management field by offering Liberal Arts, Humanities, Fine Arts, Film, Media and Communication graduates the opportunity to acquire the appropriate management and business skills, thus enabling them to capitalize upon their previous grounding within the arts.

Thanks to AUR’s connections and collaborations with numerous artistic and cultural institutions both in Rome and in Italy, this MA also offers the opportunity to gain invaluable professional experience. Rome and Italy are especially attractive for the study of arts, in general, and arts management in particular, given enormous resources that are available to scholars, art world professionals and students. Italy has a long and rich tradition of collecting, sponsoring and exhibiting visual arts. Investigating American and European art markets and cultures of collecting from the Renaissance to the present day, it is taught by staff from the University of Buckingham, the National Gallery and Waddesdon Manor.

A unique MA

A unique feature of the course will be access to two of the greatest surviving art dealers’ archives: Agnew’s, acquired by the National Gallery in 2014, and Colnaghi’s, housed since February 2014 in the Windmill Hill Archive, Waddesdon Manor. It is the first MA in the UK to offer, under the guidance of experts, practical training on how to use, unlock and analyse these rich holdings.

Study trips to Paris and Florence

The course will include study trips to Paris and Florence where students will have the opportunity to study a number of key European collections such as the Edmond de Rothschild collection in the Louvre and the Stefano Bardini collection in Florence as well as visiting important local archives.

Course structure

The course will start in September and will finish the following September. It comprises two introductory weeks on principles and methodologies followed by three 4-week taught modules delivered in the Autumn and Winter terms. During the third term, and under supervision, students research a dissertation which will be submitted at the end of September.

Subject to the agreement of the Programme Director, there are some options for part-time study, one day a week over two years, or by deferral of the dissertation.

This interdisciplinary program provides an in-depth study of modern and contemporary art and the market from the mid 19th century to the present day. Led by an expert faculty, the integrated program combines study of art history with the role played by external factors in the art industry. The program explores how the art market has intersected with modern and contemporary art practices as art works have changed hands, setting precedents for both institutional and private collectors. The program puts particular focus on the development of connoisseurship skills through object-based learning and investigative cataloguing and writing in combination with the study of current art business practices and the market. Students study art works first-hand at sites of production and exhibitions throughout New York City and beyond. Additionally, access to specialists and salerooms through our central location within Christie’s auction house enhances the program and provides an unparalleled learning opportunity. Students are introduced and have the opportunity to work alongside a network of world class practitioners and professionals, including artists; gallerists; auction house specialists; curators; fair organisers, art lawyers and consultants. There is a very practical, ‘hands on’ ethos to teaching. This is an intensive 15-month Master’s (MSc) designed to give you unrivalled access to the art market. It is a programme that explores the important ethical and legal aspects of working in the commercial art world at the same time as giving you the opportunity to study the History of Art.

You will experience Law through lectures and seminars delivered by professional practitioners and you will complete case studies for yourself. For the duration of the course, you will also actively participate to the life of a department within Christie’s. Your experience of the Auction Business through this placement will be augmented by visits to at least three key international Art Fairs and events (such as FIAC Paris, TEFAF Maastricht and Art Basel Hong Kong), to enable you to explore the art world in a variety of contexts.

Your dissertation takes the form of Work Placement Report and Catalogue of an auction consignment. This will enable you to bring together all three areas of your programme of study: Art History, Law and Business Practice in a single piece of work.

This 10-month program focuses on the analysis of contemporary art work and the understanding of evolving demands of the art market in a global context. The techniques of management, communication, marketing and the knowledge of law and regulations contribute in providing the expertise required when working in the field of contemporary art.

Based in the heart of Paris, on the premises of IESA Art & Culture, students are within easy access to all the major Parisian museums, auction houses and contemporary art galleries. Class visits to the most prominent contemporary art museums, galleries, and auction houses are organized to allow students to dialogue with curators, art historians, and gallerists.

Study trips to art centers in France are organized during each semester to allow students to network with seasoned professionals in the art sector.

Structure

The program consists of 3 trimesters:

2 trimesters of classwork (Oct-Dec/ Jan-March) and a trimester dedicated to internships (April-June) allowing students to gain professional experience (Jan-March).

During the last two trimesters, students will work on a personal project to be presented in front of a professional jury in order to validate the certificate.

Each trimester contains 200 contact hours over a 10-week period. Courses are taught in English.

Students are attributed a mentor for personalized coaching and will follow group methodology sessions to guide them in the research and development of their personal project.

1st trimester:

The History of the Contemporary Art in Europe and United States; the Economics of the Contemporary Art Market; Art Law; Art and Project Management; Communication and the Marketing, Research, Development and Management of Artistic projects (content, business plan, legal structure, communication, marketing); visits and workshops with professionals.

2nd trimester:

The Current and Future Art Markets, the History of Contemporary Art Outside of Europe; E-communication and E-marketing of Art and Luxury Products; Negotiating Sales of Art Objects; Promoting Artistic Projects, a Brand, Artists, and Contemporary Art and Luxury Products; Exhibition planning; Visits and Workshops with professionals; Methodology; mentoring sessions.

Our Graduate Diploma consists of eight modules at 3rd-year undergraduate level (up to two of these can be at 2nd-year level). You must complete the appropriate coursework and examinations, and can also write a project on a topic of your choice if this is agreed with your course director.

At Essex, you have the freedom to study what most interests you. Some of the topics you may choose to explore include the history of photography; modern and contemporary art; curatorial practice and exhibition design; as well as more vernacular forms of visual culture, such as body art and activist placards.

Core teaching weaves together a range of different approaches to the cultural industries: high-level business management, creative entrepreneurship, art and culture fundraising, event management, and design and creative marketing.

This MBA program is designed to develop students’ understanding of the art and performing arts sectors and develop professional skills in arts management and business. Professional studies are underpinned by courses on the history of twentieth century art and theatre, providing students with a hands-on experience of the artistic and cultural backgrounds.

Art Law is an exciting and fast-developing area of commercial, legal and academic research significance and the LLM in Art Law will provide you with opportunities to develop valuable skills used by those working in the art world, whether in such diverse areas as: Private Client legal practice, fine art insurance, the not-for-profit sector, galleries, museums or cultural heritage.

The LLM in Art Law is a unique collaborative and cross-disciplinary programme which will provide you with a deep understanding of the complex legal, artistic, social and ethical problems raised by the global trade in art, which was estimated at over $45 billion in 2017 (TEFAF Art Market Report 2017). Art law is broadly conceived and the main focus of the programme will be on the legal treatment of fine art and cultural heritage, although there will be opportunities to consider some of the problems surrounding definitions of ‘art’ which may be culturally, socially and historically contingent.

Exceptionally, the LLM in Art Law at the University of York is co-taught by academic specialists from both the research-active Department of History of Art and York Law School, thus providing you with a unique integrated and cross-disciplinary learning environment in which to explore legal, practical, commercial, ethical and financial issues arising in the art world, as well as their wider context and implications.

The LLM in Art Law uses a variety of postgraduate teaching methods including ‘Problem Based Learning’ (‘PBL’) which will provide you with opportunities to work collaboratively in a student ‘law firm’, and individually, on a variety of real-life simulations. These simulations provide you with exposure to the multi-faceted nature of art law disputes and will encourage you to develop and apply a broad range of legal skills including: research; document and case analysis; problem solving; negotiation and mediation; and advocacy. Additionally, you will have opportunities to develop your presentation and oral skills in debates and reading group sessions. You will undertake a specific History of Art module (chosen from a range of options) to gain subject-specific knowledge and exposure to this discipline, as well as inter-disciplinary insights. Your dissertation, on an art law topic of your choice and written under the supervision of a member of staff, completes the programme. There will be opportunities to enhance your know-how and networks by taking part in masterclass sessions led by guest speakers, and undertaking the course field trip.

LLM Structure

The programme reflects the unique inter-disciplinary nature of the LLM in Art Law by ensuring that all students, whether or not you have an existing legal or art historical background, gain a fully-integrated appreciation of the complexities of art law.

The LLM in Art Law is a taught programme of one year. It runs from October to the following September. On the LLM you will study 180 credits. 100 credits are studied through a mix of compulsory and optional taught modules, with the remaining 80 credits being obtained by completing a 15,000 word dissertation on an art law topic of your choice. All students are required to take part in the programme Fieldtrip, which is an important element of the degree programme and which will develop your appreciation of the realities of working in this field.

The LLM modules are taught using a variety of different methods. Some modules will be taught as weekly lectures and seminars, others will involve ‘Problem Based Learning’ (‘PBL’). Course structure and content

The course can be studied either one year full-time or two years part-time. The taught part of the course is delivered through lectures, seminars, and practical exercises. During semester three (June-September), you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned dissertation supervisor.

In the first two semesters (September to May), you will study a number of modules, together worth a total of 120 credits. This includes a 60 credit research project, taught over the two semesters, research training modules to prepare you in research methodologies, and a module on Art & Visual Culture, where you examine art and art criticism within the broader context of contemporary visual culture. In the final semester (June to September), you will undertake a 60 credit MA dissertation.

Contact Time

Approximately 10-14 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.

Assessment

In the first two semesters, students are assessed via a mix of exhibitions, portfolios, essays, presentations, web-design production, and teaching experience projects. Successful completion of the dissertation leads to the award of an MA.

  • History of visual Arts: The course is meant to provide students with the necessary knowledge and understanding of modern and contemporary art.
  • Performing Arts history: Music: the course will give students a foundation for understanding some of the basic relationships between Music History and Society. Theatre: the course will briefly explore the history of European theater from the Early Modern age to nowadays, focusing on political, social and economic aspects.
  • Visual Arts System: This course will give students a large and differentiated overview of contemporary effective practices for managing visual arts.
  • Performing Art System: The course aims at providing students with a wide view of the performing arts system, through the elaboration of a critical interpretation of its multiple features, from traditional roots to technological perspectives; but also from the production of cultural value to the entertainment trap, from public institutional and financial protection to market orientation.

The goals of the advanced courses are to build up competencies in specific fields of arts management in order to provide participants with advanced knowledge about how to solve problems and cope with the challenges of the arts field

The LLM in Art, Business and Law, offered by CCLS, QMUL in partnership with the Institute of Art and Law (IAL) is a unique and challenging new programme focusing on a relatively new legal area both in terms of teaching and research.

The programme will draw upon the expertise of existing members of CCLS staff and direct the focus of this expertise towards the legal aspects of doing business in the art world. CCLS members of staff will team up with IAL instructors (who are practitioners in this field) to offer an exciting and innovative approach to learning.
