Wedi’i ddysgu ar y cyd gan Ysgol y Gymraeg ac Ysgol y Saesneg, y cwrs MA Llenyddiaethau Cymru yw’r cwrs cyntaf yn unlle yn y byd sy’n canolbwyntio ar astudio a chymharu testunau o’r ddau brif draddodiad yng Nghymru (lle bo angen, mewn cyfieithiad i’r Saesneg). Ar ben hynny, hi yw’r unig genedl yng ngwledydd Prydain y mae ei llenyddiaeth Saesneg unigryw yn parhau ar yr ymylon o fewn ei chyfundrefn addysg ei hun. Ar lefel brifysgol, oherwydd rhaniad ieithyddol a fodolai yn yr 20fed ganrif, anogwyd astudiaeth ar y ddwy lenyddiaeth ar wahân – agendor nad yw ysgolheigion cyfoes ond megis dechrau ei phontio. Oherwydd ei chanolfan ddiwylliannol wirioneddol ddwyieithog, mae Bangor yn lle delfrydol i astudio’r ddau draddodiad llenyddol hyn, ac i ystyried y cwestiwn ynglÅ·n â beth sy’n digwydd i lenyddiaeth yn y Saesneg os nad hwn yw’r prif draddodiad.

Mae rhan gyntaf y cwrs yn cynnwys tri modiwl sy’n ceisio rhoi dealltwriaeth i fyfyrwyr o hanes llenyddol a diwylliannol modern Cymru, eu galluogi i ddatblygu eu dealltwriaeth o faterion allweddol ym maes ysgolheictod llenyddol modern Cymru ac ystyried themâu allweddol ar draws y ddau draddodiad llenyddol, o safbwynt traws-gymunedol.

Rhagarweiniad: "Pwy Sy’n Siarad dros Gymru?": Yn y modiwl rhagarweiniol hwn, gofynnir i fyfyrwyr ystyried sut y deallwyd ac y deellir materion yn ymwneud â hunaniaeth Gymreig o 1840 tan y presennol. Bydd myfyrwyr yn nodweddiadol yn astudio gwahaniaethau mewnol yng Nghymru, Prydeindod, cysyniadau o hunaniaeth Geltaidd, Cymru fel cenedl ôl-drefedigaethol, profiadau cyfochrog â chenhedloedd eraill Prydeinig sydd wedi’u "dominyddu", mudiadau cenedlaethol. Mae’n bosib yr astudir gweithiau gan yr awduron canlynol: Hywel Teifi Edwards, Saunders Lewis, Raymond Williams, Matthew Arnold, J.R. Jones, M. Wynn Thomas, Tony Conran, Dai Smith, Kirsti Bohata.

Gall llenorion i’w hastudio gynnwys Caradoc Evans, Lynette Roberts, Caradog Pritchard, Dylan Thomas, Kate Roberts, R.S. Thomas, Arthur Machen, Emyr Humphreys, Idris Davies.
Rhywedd a Chymru: Bydd y myfyrwyr yn astudio’r berthynas rhwng rhywedd a’r genedl Gymreig, a sut mae rolau rhywedd wedi newid dros y ganrif ddiwethaf. Gall themâu gynnwys rhywioldeb, gwrywdod a diwydiant, cynrychiolaethau ar sail rhywedd o’r gofod a wladychwyd, y corff gwrywaidd, merched a chynrychiolaethau o dir. ‘Pwy oedd – a phwy yw – y Celtiaid?’

Yn ystod un flwyddyn academaidd bydd modiwlau yn cael eu dysgu gan arbenigwyr yn Ysgolion Cymraeg; Hanes, Hanes Cymru ac Archaeoleg; a Cherddoriaeth, yn canolbwyntio ar lenyddiaeth, archaeoleg, crefydd, mytholeg, hynafiaeth, hanes celf a cherddoriaeth, er mwyn archwilio diwylliant a hunaniaeth y bobl Geltaidd o’r bryngaerau cynhanes i seneddau datganoledig ac annibynnol heddiw.

Bydd myfyrwyr hefyd yn cael arweiniad wrth wneud eu hymchwil eu hunain ar gyfer traethawd hir gradd Meistr ar bwnc o’u dewis.

Mae’r holl gyfarwyddyd ar gael yn Gymraeg a Saesneg, ac mae cefnogaeth gynhwysfawr ESOL ar gael lle bo angen.

Dyma rai o’r prif bynciau sy’n cael eu trafod yn y cwrs course:

A yw’r ‘Celtiaid’ yn bodoli mewn gwirionedd, ac os felly, pwy a beth ydynt? Sut allwn ni drafod cwestiynau o’r fath, gyda pha fethodoleg a gyda pha dystiolaeth?
Sut mae’r gair ei hun (‘Celt’, ‘Keltoi’, ac yn y blaen) wedi cael ei ddefnyddio ar hyd y canrifoedd, o haneswyr Clasurol i gerddorion pop modern?
Beth yw cryfderau a gwendidau ‘Celtomania’ a ‘Celtosgeptigiaeth’? Sut mae’r cysyniad o’r ‘Celtiaid’ wedi ei ddarganfod a’i wrthod mewn gwahanol feysydd fel Llenyddiaeth, Archaeoleg, Ieithyddiaeth, Cerddoriaeth, Crefydd?
Sut y cyfrannodd ysgolheigion cyfandirol y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg at greu’r ‘Celtiaid’?
Sut y gwnaeth y bobl sy’n siarad ieithoedd Celtaidd ennill eu hunaniaeth eu hunain a sut maent yn dal i wneud hynny? Beth mae’r testunau canoloesol (Cyfreithiau, Chwedlau, Barddoniaeth Llys, Bywydau’r Seintiau) a chanfyddiadau archeolegol yn dweud wrthym, a beth sydd gan hanes diweddar i’w ddweud?
Beth yw’r prif ffynonellau tystiolaeth am hanes a hunaniaeth y bobl ‘Geltaidd’ (hynny yw, y rhai sy’n siarad ieithoedd Celtaidd yn y cyfnod modern)? Sut ydym ni’n defnyddio’r ffynonellau hyn? A all Arthur a Cú Chulainn ddweud rhywbeth buddiol wrthym?
Sut mae hunaniaethau ethnig a chenedlaethol y ‘Celtiaid’ modern wedi eu portreadu a’u trafod mewn perthynas â’r cysyniad hwn o’r ‘Celtaidd’?
Beth oedd perthnasedd gwleidyddol ac ideolegol y ‘Celtiaid’ a beth ydyw erbyn hyn?
Gyda materion fel hyn dan sylw, mae’r cwrs course wedi ei lunio i ddatblygu sgiliau’r myfyrwyr trwy gynllun astudiaeth uwch arbenigol. Un amcan pwysig yw rhoi hyfforddiant dadansoddol perthnasol i’r myfyrwyr, fel eu bod yn gyfarwydd â’r datblygiadau damcaniaethol ac ymarferol diweddaraf mewn perthynas ag Astudiaethau Celtaidd. Ar ôl cwblhau’r cwrs, bydd gan fyfyrwyr sail gadarn ym mhrif ddulliau a ffynonellau’r ddisgyblaeth, a byddant hefyd wedi datblygu sgiliau y gellir eu trosglwyddo’n eang ac a fydd yn berthnasol i amrywiaeth fawr o yrfaoedd.

Fframwaith y Cwrs
Mae’r course yn gwrs un flwyddyn (llawn amser) a gellir hefyd ei wneud yn rhan amser (gan amlaf hyd at dair blynedd). Ceir dwy ran i’r rhaglen gradd:

Rhan 1:

Mae hon yn elfen gwbl hyfforddedig, ac mae’n cyfrannu 120 credyd. Mae gan bob modiwl hyfforddedig bwysiad credyd o 40 credyd. Dysgir rhan 1 yn ystod dau semester y flwyddyn academaidd. Mae’r dysgu yn ystod semester 1 gan amlaf rhwng diwedd mis Medi a mis Rhagfyr. Mae’r dysgu yn ystod semester 2 gan amlaf rhwng diwedd mis Ionawr a dechrau mis Mai.

Bydd y modiwlau yn Rhan 1 yn cael eu hasesu trwy gyfrwng traethodau.

Rhan 2:

Mae rhan 2 yn cynnwys traethawd hir dan oruchwyliaeth o oddeutu 20,000 gair, ar bwnc o’ch dewis, a benderfynir ar ôl trafod gyda chynghorwr traethawd hir. Cwblheir yn ystod misoedd yr haf, rhwng diwedd mis Mai a mis Medi, a dylai myfyrwyr llawn amser gyflwyno eu traethodau hir erbyn mis Medi yn y flwyddyn galendr ar ôl cofrestru.

A research degree in Welsh / Cymraeg gives you the chance to pursue a project based around your own passions and interests in Welsh / Cymraeg, leading to a qualification which can open the door to an academic career or boost employment prospects outside academia (in the private sector, the Civil Service, or education).

The MA by Research in Welsh / Cymraeg will give you the freedom to explore a topic of your own choosing in Welsh / Cymraeg and develop a methodology under the close supervision of two experienced academics in the field of Welsh / Cymraeg but without attending regular classes as required in taught programmes.

As a Welsh / Cymraeg research student you will be supervised closely by two experienced academics in the field of Welsh / Cymraeg. Typically, as a student enrolled in the MA by research in Welsh / Cymraeg you will meet them fortnightly in the first term and at regular intervals thereafter. Meetings are logged and goals agreed each time.

All research students including those of Welsh / Cymraeg programme are required to attend skills and training courses at College and Institutional level. They give presentations to other research students and staff at departmental seminars and the annual departmental postgraduate symposium including the Department of Welsh in June and the College of Arts and Humanities conference in October. Advanced research students including those of Welsh / Cymraeg may have opportunities to teach undergraduate tutorials and seminars. Welsh / Cymraeg research students have a budget (currently £200 per year) to attend conferences outside Swansea.

MA by Research in Welsh / Cymraeg degree typically lasts from one year (full-time study) to two years (part-time study).

The MA by Research in Welsh / Cymraeg is ideal for those who want:

- an MA qualification in niche areas where taught programmes are not offered;

Bydd yn cynnig y rhyddid i chi ymchwilio i bwnc o'ch dewis a datblygu methodoleg o dan oruchwyliaeth fanwl dau academydd profiadol, heb orfod mynd i ddosbarthiadau rheolaidd fel sy'n ofynnol gan raglenni a addysgir.

Byddwch yn cael eich goruchwylio'n fanwl gan ddau academydd profiadol yn eich maes. Fel arfer, byddwch yn cwrdd â nhw bob pythefnos yn ystod y tymor cyntaf ac yn rheolaidd wedi hynny. Caiff y cyfarfodydd eu logio a bydd nodau'n cael eu cytuno bob tro.

Mae disgwyl i'r holl fyfyrwyr ymchwil fynd ar gyrsiau sgiliau a hyfforddi yn y Coleg a gan y Sefydliad. Maent yn rhoi cyflwyniadau i fyfyrwyr ymchwil eraill a staff mewn seminarau adrannol a'r symposiwm ôl-raddedig adrannol blynyddol ym mis Mehefin a chynhadledd Coleg y Celfyddydau a'r Dyniaethau ym mis Hydref. Mae’r cwrs Ysgifennu Creadigol wedi ei rannu’n Rhan 1 a Rhan 2 a rhaid pasio’r rhan gyntaf yn llwyddiannus er mwyn cael mynediad i’r ail ran. Mae Rhan 1 yn cynnwys 3 modiwl 40 credyd yr un sef ‘Themâu Creadigol’, ‘Technegau Cyfansoddi’ a ‘Mathau Llenyddol’. Mae Rhan 2 y cwrs yn cynnwys 1 modiwl 60 credyd sef portffolio o waith creadigol hyd at 20,000 o eiriau, a phennir canlyniad y cwrs cyfan ar farc cyfartalog dwy ran y cynllun. Mater i’w drafod rhwng y myfyriwr a’i gyfarwyddwr academaidd fydd union natur y portffolio, ac mae amryw fodelau’n bosib, e.e. nofel fer, casgliad o storïau byrion neu gerddi, cyfuniad o farddoniaeth a rhyddiaith. Professional purpose

This programme is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) as conferring exemption from the Part 3 examinations of the RIBA, and is formally prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) for the purpose of admission to the Register of Architects. Admission to the Register is mandatory for all persons who wish to carry on business under the name, style or title containing the word 'architect'.

Successful graduates from the programme will be able to obtain statutory registered status with the ARB and attain Chartered membership of the RIBA.

The programme is unconditionally validated by the RIBA and prescribed by the ARB.

Practise-based

The emphasis is on an intensive, integrated, practice-based approach to the management of the practice of architecture.

The programme provides the opportunity for eligible candidates to qualify to practice within the profession within 12 months of commencing the course.

Content

AR50326: Practice and project management:
- An intensive lecture course held over five days, structured in response to the subject areas defined within the RIBA/ARB criteria.

- Lectures are delivered by members of the academic staff within the Department, the programme director and by visiting specialists from other parallel professions of law, construction law and statutory legislation.

- Candidates also attend a separate revision session.

- Assessment is by two closed book written examinations, which candidates must pass to be be able to progress to the oral examination. Candidates will be granted one attempt only to recover one or both of the written papers, and should the minimum passing standard not be achieved at this second attempt, the candidate is required to withdraw from the programme.

English language requirements

Either:

- IELTS: a score of at least 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in each category
- PTE Academic: Minimum of 69 with no less than 62 in each component.

Only English language tests taken up to two years prior to the date that you are due to start your studies are valid for entrance purposes.

All candidates are expected to hold a position of reasonable seniority within an Architects’ practice in the United Kingdom, and to demonstrate a minimum of 12-months experience in practice in the United Kingdom since gaining their Part 2 qualification. Teaching for taught units takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays, with one day given to each set of two units. The sequence in which units are taught is reversed each year so that part-time students attend on the same day over the period of their study.

- Full-time study: 12 months, with students attending two days a week (Wednesday and Friday)
- Part-time study: 24 months, with students attending one day a week (Wednesday or Friday)
- Extended part-time study: 48 months, with students attending one day/one semester per year.

Transfer:

This MSc is designed to respond to the significant environmental impact of buildings, which account for around 34% of all energy use and 25% of all CO2 emissions worldwide. In more developed economies, this is significantly higher: UK buildings account for nearly 46% of all energy use and 39% of all carbon emissions.

As a result, there is a need for construction professionals, and building designers in particular, who can create buildings with a low carbon footprint and reduced environmental impact.

Our course is designed to provide students with the skills and deep knowledge base required to achieve this whilst providing the comfort expected in modern buildings.

Semester 1 (October-January)

The first semester provides a foundation in the most significant issues relating to the sustainable use of innovative structural engineering materials in design and construction; and involves units in natural building materials, advanced timber engineering, advanced composites, sustainable concrete technology and architectural structures.

- Five taught compulsory units

- Includes coursework involving laboratory or small project sessions.

- Typically each unit consists of 22 hours of lectures and 11 hours of tutorials, and may additionally involve a number of hours of laboratory activity and field trips with approximately 65-70 hours of private study (report writing, laboratory results processing and revision for examinations).

Semester 2 (February-May)

Semester 2 consists of a further 30 credits comprising of five core 6 credit units. These units include:

- Materials engineering in construction

- Advanced timber engineering

- Engineering project management.

Students will undertake a group-based design activity and an individual project scoping and planning unit (Project Unit 1). The group-based activity involves application of project management techniques and provides the basis for an integrated approach to Engineering, but with the possibility of specialising in the chosen master's topic.

It is a feature of this programme that the project work proceeds as far as possible in a way typical of best industrial practice. The Semester 2 project activities have significant planning elements including the definition of milestones and deliverables according to a time-scale, defined by the student in consultation with his/her academic supervisor and (where appropriate) his/her industrial advisor.

Summer/Dissertation Period (June-September)

Individual project leading to MSc dissertation.

Depending on the chosen area of interest, the individual project may involve theoretical and/or experimental activities; for both such activities students can use the department computer suites and well-equipped and newly refurbished laboratories for experimental work. The individual projects are generally carried out under the supervision of a member of academic staff.

There may be an opportunity for some projects to be carried out with the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

About the department

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering brings together the related disciplines of Architecture and Civil Engineering. It has an interdisciplinary approach to research, encompassing the fields of Architectural History and Theory, Architectural and Structural Conservation, Lightweight Structures, Hydraulics and Earthquake Engineering and Dynamics.

Our Department was ranked equal first in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 for its research submission in the Architecture, Built Environment and Planning unit of assessment.

Half of our research achieved the top 4* rating, the highest percentage awarded to any submission; and an impressive 90% of our research was rated as either 4* or 3* (world leading/ internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour).

The dominant philosophy in the joint Department is to develop postgraduate programmes and engage in research where integration between the disciplines is likely to be most valuable. Research is carried out in collaboration with other departments in the University, particularly Management, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Psychology.

A unique and innovative MSc with a three-month professional placement.

The MSc Modern Building Design provides students with the knowledge of modern building design practice, methodologies and processes that are increasingly sought after by major engineering and design consultancies. It places emphasis on the key engineering and modelling challenges faced during the building design process and prepares students for industry, providing them with the practical and interpersonal skills to stand out to potential employers in a highly competitive market.

This unique and innovative 15-month full-time programme has three core components:
- a taught element, consisting of eight units
- a professional practice placement, where students apply low-carbon building strategies and methodologies from their taught component to establish the industrial impact of their dissertation ideas
- a research dissertation based on a real consultancy project and informed by their industrial placement experience.

We are dedicated to helping you find a placement in industry. We will support and guide you in your applications but cannot guarantee you a position. If you are unable to secure a placement, you will transfer on to our 12-month alternative programme and graduate with an MSc in Low-Carbon Building Design.

Learning outcomes

You will develop the hard and soft skills required by professionals working in key carbon-dominated built environment sectors, with the ability to demonstrate an understanding of carbon management of the built environment in practice. The taught element of the programme focuses on student professional development through the design process that is mapped to the 2013 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) plan of work for multidisciplinary working. In particular, you will gain:

- trans-sector skills required by the construction industry, with a focus on employability
- a detailed knowledge of the design tools and strategies that comprise modern design processes
- the capability to demonstrate initiative and originality within the scope of low-carbon modern design strategies, planning and management
- the skills to formulate research projects in real carbon management and low-carbon buildings, independently and in professional multidisciplinary design teams.

Semesters 1 & 2 (October – June)
The first two semesters consist of eight taught units, co-designed and co-taught with employers. They provide a foundation in the most significant issues related to working in key carbon-dominated built environment sectors and professional development. Each unit comprises lectures, tutorials, practical classes and workshops alongside time for personal study. Assessment is by a combination of coursework and oral examination.

Semester 3 (July – September)
The third semester consists of a three-month professional practice placement. Workshops during the first two semesters will help you improve your employability and prepare you to undertake a placement at one of our partner companies. Assessment is by report and presentation to your placement employer.

Or, if you pass all taught units with an overall average of at least 50% but are unable to go on placement for any reason, you will transfer on to our 12-month programme. You will spend the third semester undertaking your research dissertation and, on successful completion, will graduate with the award of MSc in Low Carbon Building Design.

Semester 4 (October – December)
The final semester consists of a research dissertation. This provides a start-to-finish research experience to embed the research and professional knowledge gained throughout the programme. It builts on the skills acquired in the taught component and is informed by the needs of your industrial placement provider.

Placement

A three-month professional placement is an opportunity for you to learn from our industrial partners. We guarantee to find enough suitable vacancies for all our students but cannot promise that you will be placed as this also depends on your performance at interview. With this in mind, our dedicated Placements Team runs workshops on CV-writing and interview techniques to support you during the application and interview process.

We have links with a large number and variety of organisations offering placements both in the UK and further afield.

Engineering consultancies and multidisciplinary design consultancies are seeking graduates with knowledge of modern building design. This programme has been developed in conjunction with employers to ensure it provides the range of skills and experience they are looking for when they recruit and, as a result, graduates of this programme should be highly employable.

The Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering has an excellent reputation for employability, and has a strong link with local, national and international employers.
