This course provides a focus on sport and performance. It has been designed to be flexible and relevant to the student’s individual needs and interests, with a strong emphasis on the application of theory to professional practice. Within the modular structure all students undertake core/compulsory modules in:

Research Skills;
Independent Study (a one to one supervised programme of work leading to the development of the proposal for the Research Project);
Supervised Experience – a module tailored to the needs of the individual and could include directed work with a specified client group or individual;
Research Project relevant to the programme being studied.
Research Skills
Research Skills is a double credit taught module. Students study the broad nature of the research process that will allow them to complete, initially, an appropriate Independent Study (in which a research proposal for the Research Project is completed) and subsequently, a full Research Project. The module covers material relevant to the design and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research. It also provides a broad understanding of the benefits and limitations of various research methods, research designs, data collection instruments and data analysis tools. Students are given the opportunity to develop their ability to be critically evaluative.

Specific content includes: Statistical issues in quantitative research and design; Simple and multiple (forced entry, moderated and mediated) regression analyses; Single factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Two factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Single factor and two factor multivariate analysis of variance (with and without repeated measures); Repeated measures analysis of variance using the multivariate solution; Doubly repeated measures analysis of variance; Analysis of covariance; Follow-up procedures for all of the above; Assumptions underpinning all of the above and available options for dealing with violations to these assumptions; Experiments and causal inference; External and construct validity; Experimental and quasi-experimental designs; Correlational and epidemiological research; Reliability and validity in quantitative and qualitative research; Issues in qualitative research and design; Interviews; Single case design and analysis; Observation; Narrative; Ethnography; grounded theory and discourse analysis.

Independent Study
The Independent Study should consist of a critical and concise review of the research literature pertaining to a particular research question. A rationale for the proposed research question must be provided, along with a sound methodology for exploring the research question, planned analyses, and expected outcomes. Further, anticipated problems such as resources, equipment, possible ethical issues, informed consent forms, a statement of feasibility of the project and expected costs must be discussed.

Supervised Experience
The content of this module will be largely student specific and include activities (workshops, directed reading, client based work) that will develop the individual’s personal applied support skills. Initially, students complete an individual self-assessment of their current skills/knowledge base and set personal goals to enable them to improve their applied support skills. All students will attend units (workshops) on Ethics in Research and consultancy, communication and counselling skills and how to conduct a needs assessment. Specific physiology and psychology workshops (eg Imagery) will also take place.

Students will complete a contract of intended activities agreed with their supervisor in the first four weeks of their programme of study. This contract may, where appropriate, include the intention to apply to British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) to commence a formally logged Supervised Experience.

A portfolio will then be developed; the portfolio records activities including meetings with supervisor, attendance at workshops, meetings and a plan of work with at least one client, and thought/evaluations of all meetings and workshops (ie evidence of reflective practice).

Overview and Format of the Research Project module
The Research Project is an independent piece of research, and acts as the culmination of the academic challenges faced by the student. The module comprises 60 credits (ie equivalent to three double modules) and will formally equate to some 600 hours of student time.

Students work closely with their supervisor to develop the work on their research proposal submitted during the Independent Study module. As External Examiners have noted, throughout this module students receive excellent research training from leaders in the field, with the resulting projects being published in international, peer reviewed journals.

Specifically, this will involve a review of research evidence with the aim of formulating an appropriate research question, and will likely involve some refinement and pilot work. Once achieved, the student will implement a research design and method suited to the area of enquiry. The supervisor provides excellent expert guidance throughout the process.

Mono-disciplinary studies and interdisciplinary work, which might involve the student’s ongoing sport/exercise experience, will be encouraged. Each topic will normally involve data collection, analysis and interpretation and allow students to demonstrate their powers of imagination, initiative, independence and time management. Students will be expected to show a thorough knowledge of the relevant sources of information and the ability to use them with discrimination; to provide full references; to exercise sound and independent judgment; to structure work logically and to express themselves with clarity and precision.

Sport scientists support athletes or sports clubs, they generally provide advice and support, designed to monitor and improve sport performance, alongside a team of specialists including coaches, psychologist, performance managers and medical staff. Areas of expertise include • strength and conditioning • physiology • nutrition and analysis of movement and tactical performance.

Exercise scientists

Exercise scientists are more concerned with improving a person's health and helping them recover from illness through a structured programme of physical activity and other health-based interventions. They are also involved with preventative treatments and work closely with GPs and primary care trusts or private healthcare organisations. Exercise scientists might be employed by local authorities to run community based health and exercise initiatives.

It may be possible to move into a particular clinical area, such as cardiology, or work as a health promotion specialist for a local authority or healthcare trust. Our close links with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise medicine, part of which is based in Sheffield, will provide additional opportunities to those wishing to pursue careers in this area.

The Bond University Master of Sports Science is designed to develop specialist knowledge and skills relating to strength and conditioning and high performance science of elite athletes.

The program is suitable for graduates in exercise and sports science aspiring for a career in high performance sport, or for established professionals such as domestic and international strength and conditioning coaches, or high performance managers seeking professional updates.

This unique program places a strong emphasis on comprehensive practical experience and industry immersion, including a two semester full-time professional internship under the mentorship of a sports scientist.

Completed in only 1 year and 4 months (4 semesters), the first two semesters are comprised of specialist on-campus coursework, followed by the internship which incorporates applied sports science /strength and conditioning practice and a research component. This component is undertaken within a professional or semi-professional sporting organisation with whom Bond University has agreements for student internships. Alternatively, students may elect to undertake their internship with an external organisation or employer relative to their field of work, with prior approval from Bond University.  

The program will culminate with the submission of a peer-reviewed manuscript that may be eligible for publication, providing an additional pathway for you to progress to further postgraduate research.

The program provides you with exposure to authentic high performance sports science learning both on campus and in industry. The coursework component is delivered primarily at the world-class Bond Institute of Health & Sport, where you will gain exceptional, high-quality practical experience in our high performance gym, health science laboratories and sports science research laboratories. Teaching methodology

The Master of Sports Science program uses a teaching methodology that involves a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, examinations, projects, presentations, assignments, computer labs and industry projects. Examination formats may include objective structure practical examinations, theory papers, assignments and oral presentations. The program will culminate with the submission of a peer-reviewed manuscript that may be eligible for publication. 

During coursework, you will be primarily located at the Bond Institute of Health and Sport, within the Cbus Stadium sporting precinct at Robina.

Internship and research

A unique feature of this program is the completion of an integrated professional placement and internship, under the mentorship of a sports scientist. This internship is completed full-time for 2 semesters, at a minimum of 500 hours with an elite sport organisation.

Bond University has affiliations with national and international elite sporting organisations and professional sports teams.

Students reflect on their individual learning journey for both professional and academic orientated activities – specifically the completion of a designated programme of research. Also includes a viva voce on the theoretical and practical knowledge and skill base of each candidate.

Research Methods (20 credits)
This module focuses on the design of research projects as a way of answering questions and solving 'real world' problems in a reliable and valid manner.

This modules aims to develop an understanding of how to apply research into a range of professional contexts associated with sport and exercise science.

Major Independent Study (60 credits)
You will complete a research project of your choosing under the supervision of a member of academic staff. Ideally you will aim to produce research of a publishable quality.

You will also need to select another four sport and exercise science modules with a minimum of three modules from the following:
Essentials of Sport & Exercise Physiology (20 credits)
Develop a comprehensive knowledge and critical understanding of the structure and function of the main human systems during exercise.

Sport & Exercise Nutrition (20 credits)
Gain a good theoretical understanding of the current sport nutrition necessary to become a good sport and exercise practitioner, studying the general principles, concepts and underpinning theory in nutrition necessary for the development of nutrition strategies.

Applied Sport & Exercise Biomechanics (20 credits)
Explore the major aspects of kinematics, kinetics and other biomechanical techniques such as electromyography, becoming familiar with the use of biomechanical equipment and developing the ability to study motion by applying biomechanical principles to collected data.

Contemporary Issues in Sport Psychology (20 credits)
Examine the broad range of cutting-edge issues and trends that appear within contemporary sport psychology literature, as you gain an in-depth understanding of human behaviour in the sporting environment.

Research

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.

Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.

Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.

Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

We have international research links and projects with universities in Southern and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USE, Italy and Austria.

Our Social Science Research (Sport and Exercise Science) programme provides students with a comprehensive overview of the key methodological and philosophical debates that shape the social sciences.

Our research is multidisciplinary, drawing on the full spectrum of natural and social sciences, and is focused on issues of contemporary concern at international, national and local levels. We engage in strong partnerships with leading schools, institutes and universities across the world in the research fields of sport, exercise, education, health and well-being. The broad scope of this research has led to developments in the treatment of eating disorders; improved understanding of the effects of sedentary lifestyles and the benefits of physical activity; academic support to enhance sport coaching; advice to international sport organisations and governments on policies and procedures; guidance and support for elite athletes (both able-bodied and disabled) to achieve their full potential; and the use of exercise in treating health conditions.

Recent research projects have included: the sociology of policing and police-community relations in the 2012 Olympics; levels of BAME representation in football leadership and coaching, and Sport For A Better World? - a social scientific investigation of the Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) sector.

Course detail

This programme aims to develop an advanced multidisciplinary understanding of contemporary issues that apply to sport and exercise science from both a theoretical and practical perspective. The programme is for individuals holding a sport science related undergraduate
degree or those with significant practical experience and qualifications in sport who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work.

The learning activities and assessments on the programme are highly applied and focussed upon developing students’ ability to evaluate critically the quality and impact of their own work. A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform sport and exercise science support work.

There is scope for negotiation in terms of practical work and focus of assessment on modules depending upon individual experience or areas of interest. For example, on the Performance Analysis module this could mean use of 3D modelling of a closed skill in the laboratory or utilising GPS technology to track movement of an entire team in a field-based setting.

• Performance analysis – using advanced performance analysis techniques to collect data in specific settings to inform athletic needs.

• Research Methods – become informed consumers and producers of research in a range of paradigms and using a variety of approaches.

• Training Interventions – investigation of training intervention and physiological adaptation for the enhancement of performance.

• Psychological Dimensions – appreciate existing psychological concepts and how they can be used to promote behaviour change in sport performance and coaching setting with diverse audiences.

• Research paper - Produce a written manuscript of publishable quality that addresses a research question relevant to strength and conditioning.

Format

This is a full-time course, you will undertake four 30 credit modules and a 60 credit dissertation over a 12 month period.

A part-time student will normally do two 30-credit modules in year one, with two 30-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation in year 2.

Work placements

Work-related learning is a key part of the activities and assessments on modules. In order to effectively undertake these tasks students will need to draw upon experiences from employment, continuous personal development (CPD) or a work placement. There are opportunities to undertake relevant CPD and work placement while on the programme.

Completion of a Personal and Academic Development Profile (PADP), through the academic tutor system, will help to identify which opportunities individuals could access to support their working towards accreditation with the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

An example of the types of opportunities available through our partnerships would be experience in clinical exercise
physiology supporting delivery of NHS based testing and exercise classes or completion of a Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) Level 4 qualification facilitated by YSJ Active. Such experiences and skills will support the programme of academic study by offering tangible examples for application of theory, critical analysis and reflective practice.

Learning & Teaching​

All modules, with the exception of the independent research project (dissertation) module are 20 credit modules. Allocated teaching timetabled (contact time) delivery for such modules usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lecture, seminars, practical laboratories/ workshops, professional visits and individual and group tutorials.

Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture type, seminar and practical based sessions. Group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) that provides learning resources over and above that found in the learning centre (library). All learners are supported with access to a personal tutor who is usually the Programme Director of your course.​

Assessment

With the exception of the independent research project (dissertation), all module assessment is based upon 5,000 words or equivalent. Assessment methods are designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of theoretical, applied and professional practice issues and include coursework essays, needs analyses and the design of interventions, research reports, case studies, presentations, role play, and video analysis and critique.

In addition, all students are required to submit an independent research project (dissertation), which can be presented in either a traditional 12,000 word or publishable paper (8,500 word) format.

Employability & Careers​

The MSc in Sport Psychology (BPS accredited) and MSc in Applied Sport Psychology are ideally suited to those aspiring to become practicing sport psychologists, as well as teachers, lecturers and coaches. Successful completion of the MSc Sport Psychology forms Stage 1 training towards BPS Chartered Status and will enable students to progress onto Stage 2 training.

The MSc in Applied Sport Psychology provides a platform from which students can pursue Supervised Experience through the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). Both programmes provide an excellent spring board for students wishing to progress to MPhil/PhD study.

The MSc in Applied Sport Psychology is aimed at those wishing to develop a career in the area of sport psychology or wish to enhance their understanding and develop their skills in the area.

Over the previous 20 years there has been a gradual acceptance and involvement in psychology within sport at all levels. The application of psychology with sports performers and coaches has been rapid and continues to develop.

Recognising this, the professional bodies of both sport science and psychology (the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences and the British Psychology Society) have developed professional routes to recognition within the field.

The School of Sport, Health and Applied Science has five specialised laboratories, in addition to a £8 million sports centre.

This Applied Sport Psychology postgraduate degree has been accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Course Content

All modules have a credit value of 20, except for the research project which has a credit value of 60. All modules are assessed by a variety of both written and oral forms of assessment. In order to qualify for the Certificate, students will be required to achieve 60 credits and for the Diploma 120 credits. For the degree of Master of Science, students will be required to achieve 180 credits, 60 of which will be the Research project.

What you'll learn

Traditionally sport science has been based on three foundational scientific disciplines - physiology, biomechanics and psychology. You’ll either study two disciplines in breadth or a single discipline in depth with a negotiated independent study.

This course provides a contemporary, interdisciplinary and applied approach to the science of sport performance enhancement. You'll have the opportunity to advance your knowledge and understanding of scientific principles in this context. You'll learn how to apply theoretical concepts and to develop practical professional skills for situations that sports scientists encounter on a daily basis.

You’ll also study research methods and data analysis and will work on an interdisciplinary team providing support services for an athlete client, which will expose you to a range of practical and ethical issues associated with support work.

You’ll be able employ advanced investigative, analytical and practical techniques in your field and increase your employability in an academic or applied setting.

You’ll also develop as a reflective practitioner, taking responsibility for your own learning and on-going professional development.

You'll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and through independent study. There may also be some opportunities to study abroad.
