This course aims to develop students’ theoretical understanding of issues at the forefront of research in sport science. It has been designed to be flexible and relevant to the student’s individual needs and interests, with a strong emphasis on developing students’ ability to question current thinking and propose alternative evidence based actions/hypotheses.

Within the modular structure all students undertake core/compulsory modules in:

Supervised Experience – a module tailored to the needs of the individual and include directed work with a specified client group or individual;
MA Research Skills;
Dissertation Proposal and Dissertation relevant to the programme being studied.
Supervised Experience
The content of this module will be largely student specific and include activities (workshops, directed reading, client based work) that will develop the individual’s personal applied support skills. Initially, students complete an individual self-assessment of their current skills/knowledge base and set personal goals to enable them to improve their applied support skills. All students will attend units (workshops) on Ethics in Research and consultancy, communication and counselling skills and how to conduct a needs assessment. Specific physiology and psychology workshops (eg Imagery) will also take place.

Students will complete a contract of intended activities agreed with their supervisor in the first four weeks of their programme of study. This contract may, where appropriate, include the intention to apply to British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) to commence a formally logged Supervised Experience.

A portfolio will then be developed; the portfolio records activities including meetings with supervisor, attendance at workshops, meetings and a plan of work with at least one client, and thought/evaluations of all meetings and workshops (ie evidence of reflective practice).

MA Research Skills
This module covers material relevant to the design and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research. It aims to enable students to critically evaluate the statistical procedures that have been used by other quantitative researchers; design and statistically analyse their own true experiments, quasi-experiments and non-experimental hypothesis testing studies and appreciate the assumptions of qualitative research and demonstrate knowledge of data collection and analysis procedures.

Overview and Format of the MA Dissertation related modules
The goal of the Dissertation Proposal module is to fully prepare the student for successful completion of the subsequent MA Dissertation. Literature searching, presentation, and scholarly writing skills will be honed. To achieve this, the student will work along side a supervisor to identify a broad topic ripe for review. Upon development of an initial layout for the Dissertation, one or possibly two areas of the topic are reviewed. As such a deliberately narrow and abbreviated review is conducted better allowing the student to gain clear and progressive understanding of the levels of thoroughness and critical thinking associated with a MA Dissertation.

Students will receive tutorials and guidance in planning a literature search, identifying and gathering a literature, preparing a literature review, developing a dissertation proposal, and making an oral presentation of the proposal.

In their Dissertation module, students will compose a literature review and develop a proposition that they will advance as an argument. The resulting written report will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the chosen topic.

Students also choose three modules from:

Clinical Exercise Physiology;
Sport Psychology;
Effective Coaching;
Exercise Psychology;
Disability and Rehabilitation;
Rehabilitation of the Injured Athlete.
The programme is delivered using a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, group activities, practical work, tutorials and role play. Each module comprises approximately 200 hours of student time (including formal contact).

Future Career
This course could enable students to develop their careers in a number of ways. The course is primarily aimed at students who wish to pursue sport or health related careers that do not involve conducting empirical research.

The MA is especially recommended to graduates who want to pursue a career in sport or health related fields, such as rehabilitation, coaching, leisure and fitness; pursue a career in related fields such as education and social services; give their CV an additional boost; explore a particular area of sport or health sciences in detail through researching and writing a literature review.

NB – This course is not appropriate for students wishing to progress onto academic research via a science based PhD.

Research Skills
Research Skills is a double credit taught module. Students study the broad nature of the research process that will allow them to complete, initially, an appropriate Independent Study (in which a research proposal for the Research Project is completed) and subsequently, a full Research Project. The module covers material relevant to the design and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research. It also provides a broad understanding of the benefits and limitations of various research methods, research designs, data collection instruments and data analysis tools. Students are given the opportunity to develop their ability to be critically evaluative.

Specific content includes: Statistical issues in quantitative research and design; Simple and multiple (forced entry, moderated and mediated) regression analyses; Single factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Two factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Single factor and two factor multivariate analysis of variance (with and without repeated measures); Repeated measures analysis of variance using the multivariate solution; Doubly repeated measures analysis of variance; Analysis of covariance; Follow-up procedures for all of the above; Assumptions underpinning all of the above and available options for dealing with violations to these assumptions; Experiments and causal inference; External and construct validity; Experimental and quasi-experimental designs; Correlational and epidemiological research; Reliability and validity in quantitative and qualitative research; Issues in qualitative research and design; Interviews; Single case design and analysis; Observation; Narrative; Ethnography; grounded theory and discourse analysis.

Independent Study
The Independent Study should consist of a critical and concise review of the research literature pertaining to a particular research question. A rationale for the proposed research question must be provided, along with a sound methodology for exploring the research question, planned analyses, and expected outcomes. Further, anticipated problems such as resources, equipment, possible ethical issues, informed consent forms, a statement of feasibility of the project and expected costs must be discussed.

Overview and Format of the Research Project module
The Research Project is an independent piece of research, and acts as the culmination of the academic challenges faced by the student. The module comprises 60 credits (ie equivalent to three double modules) and will formally equate to some 600 hours of student time.

Students work closely with their supervisor to develop the work on their research proposal submitted during the Independent Study module. As External Examiners have noted, throughout this module students receive excellent research training from leaders in the field, with the resulting projects being published in international, peer reviewed journals.

Specifically, this will involve a review of research evidence with the aim of formulating an appropriate research question, and will likely involve some refinement and pilot work. Once achieved, the student will implement a research design and method suited to the area of enquiry. The supervisor provides excellent expert guidance throughout the process.

Mono-disciplinary studies and interdisciplinary work, which might involve the student’s ongoing sport/exercise experience, will be encouraged. Each topic will normally involve data collection, analysis and interpretation and allow students to demonstrate their powers of imagination, initiative, independence and time management. Students will be expected to show a thorough knowledge of the relevant sources of information and the ability to use them with discrimination; to provide full references; to exercise sound and independent judgment; to structure work logically and to express themselves with clarity and precision.

You develop strong technical, analytical, practical and professional skills, alongside specialist skills in biomechanics and performance analysis, physiology and nutrition, and strength and conditioning.

We designed this course to continue specialist studies at masters level for students who already possess a relevant first degree. You may also have an appropriate combination of other subject specific qualifications and relevant practical experience.

Reflection in Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences

In today’s marketplace, employers are seeking to employ staff that are suitably qualified to undertake their roles and responsibilities. As such, there is an increased need for postgraduate courses to be vocationally orientated, with an emphasis on training students in the theoretical underpinnings and relevant practical areas to work in the sport industry.

The PG Diploma/MSc Applied Sport & Exercise Physiology course focuses on disciplines pertinent to the field of applied sport and exercise physiology and reflects the needs of today’s students, within the context of the workforce in general, the social and political environment, and national and regional sporting and exercise priorities.

The applied focus of the programme enables students to gain both the theoretical and practical skills required to gain employment as a Sport and Exercise Physiologist.

In addition, the location of the university provides many opportunities to refine those skills through work with various sports clubs in the area.

The course utilises equipment in the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science, which includes extensive laboratory analytical equipment and library materials that support the degree.

Course Content

All modules have a credit value of 20, except for the research project which has a credit value of 60. With the exception of the Advanced Sport and Exercise Physiology module, all modules are assessed by a variety of types of coursework. To qualify for the diploma you need to accrue 120 credits.

In addition, MSc students have to complete a substantial research project. Modules are either taught two or three hours per week (Mondays and Wednesdays) or, in the case of the research methods module, in an intensive block.

Teaching and Assessment

Each module in the course is assessed by one or more pieces of coursework. With the exception of the Advanced Sport & Exercise Physiology module, there are no written examinations; however, a number of modules employ oral examinations.

Assessments are designed to provide the opportunity to demonstrate critical analysis, deep and insightful thought and the application of knowledge. Research

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.

Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.

Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.

Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

We have international research links and projects with universities in Southern and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USE, Italy and Austria.

Course detail

This programme aims to develop an advanced multidisciplinary understanding of contemporary issues that apply to sport and exercise science from both a theoretical and practical perspective. The programme is for individuals holding a sport science related undergraduate
degree or those with significant practical experience and qualifications in sport who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work.

The learning activities and assessments on the programme are highly applied and focussed upon developing students’ ability to evaluate critically the quality and impact of their own work. A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform sport and exercise science support work.

There is scope for negotiation in terms of practical work and focus of assessment on modules depending upon individual experience or areas of interest. For example, on the Performance Analysis module this could mean use of 3D modelling of a closed skill in the laboratory or utilising GPS technology to track movement of an entire team in a field-based setting.

• Performance analysis – using advanced performance analysis techniques to collect data in specific settings to inform athletic needs.

• Research Methods – become informed consumers and producers of research in a range of paradigms and using a variety of approaches.

• Training Interventions – investigation of training intervention and physiological adaptation for the enhancement of performance.

• Psychological Dimensions – appreciate existing psychological concepts and how they can be used to promote behaviour change in sport performance and coaching setting with diverse audiences.

• Research paper - Produce a written manuscript of publishable quality that addresses a research question relevant to strength and conditioning.

Format

This is a full-time course, you will undertake four 30 credit modules and a 60 credit dissertation over a 12 month period.

A part-time student will normally do two 30-credit modules in year one, with two 30-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation in year 2.

Work placements

Work-related learning is a key part of the activities and assessments on modules. In order to effectively undertake these tasks students will need to draw upon experiences from employment, continuous personal development (CPD) or a work placement. There are opportunities to undertake relevant CPD and work placement while on the programme.

Completion of a Personal and Academic Development Profile (PADP), through the academic tutor system, will help to identify which opportunities individuals could access to support their working towards accreditation with the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

An example of the types of opportunities available through our partnerships would be experience in clinical exercise
physiology supporting delivery of NHS based testing and exercise classes or completion of a Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) Level 4 qualification facilitated by YSJ Active. Such experiences and skills will support the programme of academic study by offering tangible examples for application of theory, critical analysis and reflective practice.

Our MSc Sports Coaching Science programme is carefully aligned to employer needs and aims to provide the knowledge, skills and experience to successfully pursue a career in the area of Sports Coaching Science.

The processes and theories underpinning sports coaching science will be explored, together with key practical competencies, all delivered in conjunction with an intensive work placement offering invaluable industry relevant experience.

This course is highly vocational in nature and beneficial to those either wishing to seek future employment in Sports Coaching Science, or, those currently employed within a professional club or organisation.

The advent of this course is in response to the marked growth in career opportunities available to sports coaching scientists across a range of sporting clubs and organisations. This is exemplified by the large number of job vacancies advertised on websites such as SportsCoachUK, UK Sport, BASES, County Sports Partnerships and LinkedIn.

**Candidates must hold at least a Level Two Governing Body of Sport coaching award; having currently (within the last 3 years) attended a Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop and hold current coaching insurance and a current DBS check.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level.

Course Overview

The MSc in Sport Psychology and Applied Sport Psychology provide students with the opportunity to extend their theoretical and applied knowledge and understanding of sport psychology within a supportive student centred environment. The programmes are designed to be flexible, meet students' needs and develop a range of transferable skills that will enhance their employability. The programmes are delivered by a team of dedicated sport psychology staff, many of whom are at the forefront of international research and professional practice developments in their respective fields. The application of theory to professional practice is a key strength of the programmes.

Learning & Teaching​

All modules, with the exception of the independent research project (dissertation) module are 20 credit modules. Allocated teaching timetabled (contact time) delivery for such modules usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lecture, seminars, practical laboratories/ workshops, professional visits and individual and group tutorials.

Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture type, seminar and practical based sessions. Group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) that provides learning resources over and above that found in the learning centre (library). All learners are supported with access to a personal tutor who is usually the Programme Director of your course.​

Assessment

With the exception of the independent research project (dissertation), all module assessment is based upon 5,000 words or equivalent. Assessment methods are designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of theoretical, applied and professional practice issues and include coursework essays, needs analyses and the design of interventions, research reports, case studies, presentations, role play, and video analysis and critique.

In addition, all students are required to submit an independent research project (dissertation), which can be presented in either a traditional 12,000 word or publishable paper (8,500 word) format.

Employability & Careers​

The MSc in Sport Psychology (BPS accredited) and MSc in Applied Sport Psychology are ideally suited to those aspiring to become practicing sport psychologists, as well as teachers, lecturers and coaches. Successful completion of the MSc Sport Psychology forms Stage 1 training towards BPS Chartered Status and will enable students to progress onto Stage 2 training.

The MSc in Applied Sport Psychology provides a platform from which students can pursue Supervised Experience through the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). Both programmes provide an excellent spring board for students wishing to progress to MPhil/PhD study.

Apply scientific principles underpinning sport to the context of performance enhancement in the growing field of sport science.

This course will give you expert knowledge in a specialist area of the science of sport performance. It will develop applied techniques which will help you pursue a career in sport science support, academic research, teaching or other science based professions.

The applied focus of this course is supported by contemporary, well-equipped and supported laboratory facilities.

The course content is aligned to the requirements of supervised experience (SE) with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

What you'll learn

Traditionally sport science has been based on three foundational scientific disciplines - physiology, biomechanics and psychology. You’ll either study two disciplines in breadth or a single discipline in depth with a negotiated independent study.

This course provides a contemporary, interdisciplinary and applied approach to the science of sport performance enhancement. You'll have the opportunity to advance your knowledge and understanding of scientific principles in this context. You'll learn how to apply theoretical concepts and to develop practical professional skills for situations that sports scientists encounter on a daily basis.

You’ll also study research methods and data analysis and will work on an interdisciplinary team providing support services for an athlete client, which will expose you to a range of practical and ethical issues associated with support work.

You’ll be able employ advanced investigative, analytical and practical techniques in your field and increase your employability in an academic or applied setting.

You’ll also develop as a reflective practitioner, taking responsibility for your own learning and on-going professional development.

This is a one year full-time course and is split up into three trimesters.

You'll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and through independent study. There may also be some opportunities to study abroad.

PgCert:
- scientific methods
- biomechanics and performance enhancement
- psychological interventions for sport performance enhancement
- applied physiology and sport performance
- independent study module

PgDip:
- sport science support of performance athletes
- contemporary issues in sport performance
- Independent study module

MSc:
- independent research project

Careers

Sport science support is a growing field. Many professional sporting bodies now employ sport scientists in a performance support role and this course is ideal if you have an interest in this area.

The alignment of course content to the requirements of supervised experience (SE) with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) will help you achieve accreditation if SE is continued after graduation.

The emphasis on research skills also equips you to continue on to possible PhD study and a research or teaching career.
