This course will enable the future Medical Support Officer (MSO) to draw upon insightful learning from a wide variety of public-health-related experiences, to ensure healthcare effectiveness, population safety and wellbeing in military contexts.
The Army Medical Services (AMS) delivers world-class international military medical capability. Key to this role is the Medical Support Officer (MSO). This is the first time UK defence medical services will be preparing their MSO students to postgraduate level.
Our course is built around the principles of work-based learning. While undergoing your military foundation year training, as an MSO student you will work in a tripartite partnership with the University of Chester and AMS to learn from their experiences and reflect on learning against principles of public health, epidemiology and disease management.
The teaching team are committed to ensuring efficient learning and understand the demanding role of the MSO, with several Faculty members being serving officers or ex-service personnel.
The course will be delivered flexibly through e-learning and satellite delivery to cater for the nomadic life of the Army Officer. Learning will be focused on international exercises such as Exercise Askari Serpent in Kenya.
This course will challenge the way that you think about health, using state-of-the-art public health principles and practice. The block and blend teaching methods starts with academic staff from the University of Salford delivering a week’s intensive teaching in Salford per module, giving you a thorough grounding in Evidence Based Public Health and Research Methods applied to international public health priorities, and an overview of the online facilities available to support the programme (e.g. library/blackboard/e-mail etc).
Active researchers in the field of evidence-based public health deliver the teaching, and the programme is designed to satisfy the updated Public Health Skills & Knowledge Framework (UKPHSKF, 2013) and aligns with the UK Faculty of Health’s nine key areas.
The face-to-face (Block) is followed by weekly online input (Blend) and study that builds towards your PG Certificate. Following the intensive week, there are live sessions online and work that you can schedule as it suits you and specialist support from academic staff as well as access to all the (online) facilities that the University of Salford has to offer.
The PG Certificate is a qualification in its own right but can also be a building block towards an MSc in Public Health. Six months further study in the UK and successful completion of relevant modules mean that you can progress on to your dissertation leading to the award of MSc.

For the PgCert Public Health (Block and Blend), students will be taught face-to-face for one week per module, which will be complemented through the use of online learning (University’s Blackboard VLE and Collaborate). Both written and/or oral feedback will be provided using online technology. Students will also be expected to undertake independent reading and learning, to consolidate what is being taught/learned and to broaden knowledge and understanding of the subject.
For both modules (Evidence Based Public Health and Research Methods Applied to Public Health) assessment will be by written assignments (four in total).
With this PG Cert you will be well placed to begin developing your public health career, beginning with junior public health roles in local or national government health departments and NGOs.
The qualification will also enable you to bring a public health perspective to your current career/role, in a range of professions. There is a wide variety of public health jobs, which can include health promotion, health policy development, research or health advocacy.
Lecturers on the MSc Public Health have close links with a range of national and international agencies and community partnership, most through research, with an ‘applied’ focus. Examples of these links include: Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), The Royal Society for Public Health; The NHS; Department of Health; Strategic Health Authority; and The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE).

On this course, you'll receive instruction in core public health skills including epidemiology, statistics and research methods. As well as giving you the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a range of topics; evidence-based public health and 21st Century Global Public Health Challenges. The focus of the curriculum is on the social determinants of health (which makes it unique among the other Greater Manchester universities).
This course aligns to the 9 key competencies of the UK Faculty of Public Health Curriculum. In this regard, the course will equip you with the core skills you'll need to to effectively interpret and understand key areas of health research and how this can be used to inform and drive policy. You'll also learn how to use this insight to inform and drive public health.
During your time with us, you can tap into the expertise and skills of our partners, who include external public health practitioners and research staff from across the University. Whilst the programme does not include a placement, or work experience, students have the opportunity to work on external or internal applied research projects as part of their dissertation.
One of our strengths is the small class size (typically less than 30 students per year) which enables close liaison between students and the leading research staff who will be teaching and mentoring students.

The MSc Public Health adopts a multi-disciplinary, evidence-based approach, focusing on the social determinants of health.
The taught modules will give you core public health and epidemiology knowledge and skills, research methods and quantitative analysis skills, and give a focus on health inequality and the social determinants of health. You will also be exposed to a range of important issues that are recurrent in public health practice both nationally and globally.
This course runs full-time over one year or three years part-time, giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:
To accommodate different learning styles and prior student experiences, a combination of teaching and learning strategies are used throughout the course. These include:course comprises a structured teaching programme within which a variety of teaching methods will be used, to include lectures, case studies, individual and group work, independent learning, student led presentations/discussions, seminars.
You will also have access to the University’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard, where you can tap into online resources including discussion boards and wikis.

Full time students on this course can apply for student membership with The Royal Society of Public Health. Upon completion of the course students are eligible to apply for a fellowship membership with The Royal Society of Public Health.
