Programme structure

The majority of students on this programme come to Glasgow for a full year of study. This will provide you with the opportunity to carry out a research project which will usually be based in one of our research groups.

All our lectures are given by subject specialists, including clinical academics at the University as well as many other specialists from around the UK and occasionally internationally.

You will take a total of eight courses, arranged into blocks of teaching. Each teaching block lasts two weeks and covers two courses.

This MSc in Principles of Applied Neuropsychology examines the uses of neuropsychology in the clinical world. Neuropsychology is central to the debate about the spark of individuality each human shows. This course looks at brain functions as an individual and in group settings, as well as studying the neuropsychology of mental health problems.

The course is an employability-centred extension to an undergraduate psychology degree. It is focused on neuropsychology, but is suitable for any student interested in preparing for an eventual career as a professional psychologist.

COURSE STRUCTURE

You’ll learn about the recent theories explaining how the brain allows us to cope in a busy world. You’ll learn about key concepts, such as self and how damage to these processes can give rise to mental health problems. You’ll also study how to be an applied psychologist, focusing on the core skills expected of a practitioner of applied psychology.

MODULES

Issues in Professional Practice introduces students to the principles of applied psychology and the processes of recovery and rehabilitation. It focuses on the core skills expected of a practitioner of applied psychology: assessment; formulation; intervention; evaluation; communication skills; and self- management skills. The embedded research skills in this module relate to the evaluation of clinical practice.

Social Neuropsychology of Mental Health includes a neuropsychological perspective on mental health problems. It features a series of lectures on psychosis, affective disorders, fear disorders, principles of cognitive behavioural therapy, and basic pharmacology. We also look at the relationship between psychopathology and criminality.

Advanced Neuropsychology provides a clinical approach to degenerative disorders, ageing, communication disorders visual disorders, and childhood developmental disorders.

Neuropsychological Rehabilitation exists to enable people to regain their footing in social and occupational spheres after brain injury. It does this in many ways, such as emotionally, functionally and cognitively. This module offers a broad theoretical perspective of the different methods of rehabilitation available for a range of disorders. We aim to provide not just theory but also guidance as to how you communicate that theory to patients, clients and other professionals.

The Dissertation module is the opportunity to investigate an area of neuropsychology of individual interest. As part of this module you are required to submit a 4,000–6,000 word paper, ready for publication in a specified journal, based on your research. You also have to demonstrate the ability to keep a detailed research log. The research undertaken by students must have a neuropsychological focus.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching includes lectures, seminars, individual tutorials, small and large group work, and neuropsychological testing experience. There will be guest speakers from relevant employers as well as research talks from existing practitioners.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

We have a variety of assessment that you’ll use during your doctoral training; a systematic literature review, writing a case formulation, a reflective diary as well as traditional essays.

This diploma provides you with training in Clinical Neuropsychology. The taught content of this Diploma is identical to the taught content we provide when training Clinical Psychologists in the UK who wish to specialise in Clinical Neuropsychology. The course therefore delivers an authentic reflection of clinical practice and issues. You will learn about a range of neuropsychological disorders and pathologies as well as focusing on principles of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation.

80% of our course is delivered by clinicians practicing in UK hospitals and we teach a large range of clinical skills which will support those who wish to have a career working with patients or conducting patient research in Neuropsychology. The MSc in Applied Clinical Psychology has been specifically designed to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in core theoretical, methodological, and empirical areas of clinical psychology. This programme is aimed at graduates who wish to strengthen their academic credentials in preparation for a career in clinical psychology and is taught by academics/research experts in their field, HCPC Registered Psychologists, clinicians across a wide range of specialities, and service users and/or carers. You will also have the opportunity to undertake and be assisted in finding a clinically relevant placement.

With one day of teaching (Tuesdays), delivery is designed to support those with full-time jobs or family commitments, and full-time (one year) and part-time (two years) study options are available.

DBS CHECKS

This course will involve access to children and/or vulnerable adults. You will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB) and we will guide you through this process.

INDUSTRY LINKS

Clinical and other HCPC Registered Psychologists alongside a broad range of clinicians will contribute to the delivery of this course; many of these work or have worked within the NHS, but we also have links with clinicians in private practice. This unique mix of professionals is reflected in the content of the course, where you will learn about the similarities and differences of working clinically within the NHS vs. private practice.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

We aim to provide the best possible facilities for our students. The School is based in the multi-million pound purpose-built Darwin Building, which includes an extensive range of state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment, including: a Brain Imaging Laboratory, Observational Suite equipped with one-way mirrors and video cameras; established Health Psychology Suite; and eye tracking equipment. The School has a thriving community of PhD and MSc students and has links with regional universities, NHS hospital trusts, schools and community groups.

The core theoretical basis of clinical psychology will be presented via lectures and supported seminars. Seminars or workshops are used to explore key issues from the curriculum, both to facilitate understanding and develop skills; you are encouraged to prepare material in advance of the sessions, to exchange information as part of a peer network, and to reflect upon their understanding. Independent study will also be incorporated, as well as research supervision to support the production of a high-quality research project that will contribute to the field of clinical psychology.

The course is assessed through a mixture of exams, coursework, statistical assignments, and an advanced research dissertation.

The taught component of the course will take place on a Tuesday to support students with full-time jobs or family commitments, and it may be completed over 1 year (full-time) or 2 or more years (part-time).

FURTHER INFORMATION

The MSc in Applied Clinical Psychology is intended for graduates who wish to strengthen their knowledge base, academic credentials and applied skills in core areas of clinical psychology. The course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of:
-The theory and evidence that underpins the application of psychology to psychological distress/conditions across the lifespan
-Core applied skills of the clinical psychologist, including communication, assessment, formulation and treatment
-Professional issues and practice in clinical psychology
-Key research methods and statistics used by clinical psychologists and their application to clinically relevant topics and settings
-The application of clinical psychology in health and forensic settings, or in specialist areas such as clinical neuropsychology

Advanced research skills and competencies are developed further through a project supported by an experienced researcher within the programme team, where you will be given the opportunity to apply your skills to a relevant topic in clinical psychology.

The applied focus of the course places a key emphasis on supporting placement opportunities for our students; with staff assisting you in finding a suitable placement, and ensuring you work on a project that is relevant to clinical psychology (e.g., service evaluation)*. The course also targets your development of applied skills through embedding your core knowledge directly into clinical contexts within role play and case study review. A critical area in your skill development will be working on developing your competence in reflection and clinical communication, learning how to adapt your style for different client groups. You will also be encouraged to explore applied approaches in specialized areas such as neuropsychological assessment.

From the very beginning our course has embedded service user/carer perspectives from course development, through to delivery and assessment. This is supported by UCLan’s service user/carer team (Comensus), made up of individuals who use their own personal narratives from a wide range of psychological and neurological difficulties. About the School of Psychology

As a student within the School of Psychology at Kent, you benefit from our supportive, dynamic and diverse environment for creative research and learning.

All of our taught Master’s (MSc) programmes have been recognised by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as meeting the nationally recognised criteria for preparation training for PhD research.

Conducting both basic and applied research in several areas, Psychology at Kent is highly regarded as a leading European centre for postgraduate research. Our long-established international reputation in social psychology is complemented by our strengths in cognitive, developmental and forensic psychology. We attract excellent visiting scholars and postgraduate students from both within the UK and overseas.

Some of our PhD students are self-funded, and others are funded by grants or awards either from the School, UK or their countries of origin. Some are also paid to undertake part-time teaching within the School. We have a strong track record of attracting ESRC research studentship funding, which involves partnerships with external organisations such as Age UK and the Equality and Human Rights Commission and collaborative studentships with partners such as People United.

Assessment

The programme mainly involves lecture and seminar based teaching. In addition, particular option units (such as computational modelling) require 'hands-on' experience and learning of particular skills. Staff contact time is eight hours per week. You are expected to study for 1,800 hours over 45 weeks.

Assessment is mainly by coursework assignment (4-6,000 word essays), examination (for the Advanced Statistics and Methodology module only), plus the dissertation.

This programme aims to:

- foster your intellectual development by providing you with specialised knowledge of a range of theoretical approaches to cognitive psychology/neuropsychology and statistical and methodological expertise in order that you should be well equipped to make your own original contribution to psychological knowledge

- provide teaching that is informed by current research and scholarship and that requires you to engage with aspects of work at the frontiers of knowledge

- help you to develop research skills and transferable skills in preparation for entering academic or other careers as psychologists
satisfy the academic requirements of the knowledge base specified by the British Psychological Society

- enable you to manage your own learning and to carry out independent research

- help you to develop general critical, analytic and problem-solving skills that can be applied in a wide range of settings.

Research themes

The School of Psychology is highly regarded as a leading European centre for postgraduate research, with an international reputation for excellence in social psychology (including group processes and intergroup relations); cognition and neuroscience; developmental psychology; and forensic psychology. We have staff who can supervise research degrees in all of these areas. The research environment is designed to sustain a strong, vibrant research culture, encourage collaboration, and unite staff and students with shared research interests. Our themes ensure critical mass and create a highly energetic and stimulating intellectual climate.

Research activity is supported by:

- centrally co-ordinated provision and use of laboratories and technical support

- selection of speakers for our weekly departmental research colloquia

- weekly research meetings within each theme

- developing, reporting and analysing research, and hosting our many visiting scholars

- several monthly small meeting series on specific areas of cross-cutting research (such as forensic, social development, emotion, social cognition and health).

Careers

Our postgraduate students commonly go into the fields of health, teaching or further education. For instance, many of our graduates take up roles as assistant psychologists in the NHS with a view to becoming a professional clinical or forensic psychologist. Upon completing our Master’s courses, graduates have also pursued doctoral study and academic careers at higher education institutions.

The programme is suitable for teachers of all subjects and across all ages, including teachers of children with special needs, educational psychologists, education managers and policy makers. It is for those who want to enrich their thinking and practice with insights about learning and development from the sciences of the mind and brain.

You will be supported in exploring this exciting new field through:
-Engaging with the most up-to-date research literature, including the latest findings arising from the sciences of mind and brain in areas relevant to education. These include reading, mathematics, learning disorders, technology and creativity, but also many other areas.

Clinical neuropsychology is particularly interested in the effects of brain disorders and other clinical conditions affecting the brain on these functions.

Disorders and conditions comprise acquired or congenital neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions in children, adolescents and adults, such as ADHD, autism, stroke, brain tumor, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, drug abuse, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, etc.

Clinical neuropsychologists can be involved in both the assessment and treatment of people with brain disorders in various applied and often clinical settings, but also in patient related research. Methods used in the field of clinical neuropsychology are neuropsychological tests, neuroimaging and electrophysiological techniques.

With the aging population, the number of people with neuropsychological disorders increases and with this also the demand for well trained clinical neuropsychologists.

The full-time Research Methods in Psychology course, which will last one year, will normally involve attending the University for two full days a week (Monday and Tuesday). The part-time course, which lasts two years, will normally involve attending the University one full day a week.

Clinical psychology focuses on the challenges faced by people with clinical, mental or physical (neuropsychological) health conditions. The role of the clinical psychologist is to work with these individuals and attempt to improve their quality of life.

The Abnormal and Clinical Psychology course will greatly enhance students’ suitability for professional clinical training, for example a three year DClin Clinical Psychology programme at a BPS accredited training centre.

Entry onto a clinical psychology doctorate training programme is extremely competitive, with candidates usually expected to have acquired training and experience beyond degree level. 

The MSc degree provides a valuable academic foundation for future doctoral training in clinical psychology, it is largely theory-based and is designed to address core topics in abnormal and clinical psychology.

Clinical training courses also look for evidence of clinical experience with relevant client groups.

Swansea University does not provide this directly, but work experience (paid and voluntary) may be available through the local NHS Psychology Services. Opportunities may also be available locally through independent and private sector organisations (e.g. Mind Cymru, Headway, private rehabilitation services, etc.). These opportunities are regularly advertised and students are supported in making the most of them. 

Please note this course does not lead to a clinical qualification recognised by the British Psychological Society.

Abnormal and Clinical Psychology Course Structure

The one year, full-time degree for Abnormal and Clinical Psychology requires students to attend the University for two full days a week (normally Monday and Tuesday).

The two-year part-time degree requires students to attend the University for one full day a week.

In the first two semesters taught modules are provided with the research project typically undertaken during the summer months.

On occasion sessions are arranged on other days of the week (e.g. when visiting clinician talks/workshops or employability sessions). 

Teaching is done via group sessions with practical classes provided on research and design topics. These will be assessed via written course work and a written examination.
