The specialisation in applied econometrics provides specialist knowledge, tools and skills to enable econometric and statistical analyses required in the business, economics and finance sectors.

The specialisation in applied economics and econometrics provides specialist knowledge, tools and skills in economics and econometrics to address important economic policy questions.

- Business economics
Your qualification will be a Master of Business Economics

The specialisation in business economics provides an advanced knowledge of the theories explaining and analysing economic policies - focusing on how individuals, households, firms and governments interact and how economies work, with an emphasis on economic regulation and policy.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts. Part A. Advanced preparatory, Part B. Mastery knowledge and Part C. Application studies All students complete Part B. Depending on prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part C or a combination of the two.

Part A. Advanced preparatory
These studies will introduce you to Economics and Econometrics at advanced undergraduate and graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field (that is, not in a field likely to prepare them for advanced study in this field). Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised degree or a graduate certificate in a cognate discipline will receive credit for this part.

Part B. Mastery knowledge
These units will develop your capacity as a critical and creative professional who is able to apply your knowledge of a specialised area to provide discipline based solutions.

Part C. Application studies
This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your specialisation, or more broadly, or alternatively to select any units from across the university in which you are eligible to enrol. Some students use these electives units to provide a research pathway towards a Doctor of Philosophy course.

This MA focuses on the problems of economic development in the changing context of the international economic relationship. It will also provide a thorough grounding in macroeconomic and microeconomic analysis, in applied econometrics, in a range of approaches for dealing with economic policy issues, and in the long-term historical and conceptual context of contemporary debates in economics.

What will you study?

Such problems include trade and development, the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on development, and the significance of technology transfer.

The degree culminates in your dissertation, in which you will have the opportunity to carry out in-depth research into a contemporary issue dealing with developing countries, international trade and FDI. You will work with a member of the Economics department who specialises in and pursues research in this area.

Building on a sound general training in econometric methods, the project-oriented compulsory modules in time series econometrics and applied microeconometrics introduce you to the theory and practice of econometric modelling. The programme is one of the few courses in the UK to offer specialist training in advanced econometric methods and their application. Economists with quantitative skills and experience in empirical research are in high demand in both the private and public sector.

Course structure

The Economics and Econometrics MSc is studied over one year full-time or two years part-time and is divided into two stages: eight taught modules (six of which are compulsory) and a dissertation.

There are compulsory modules in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometric Methods and a single module in Research Methods. There are a further two core econometrics modules: Time Series Econometrics and Applied Microeconometrics. The core modules build upon students’ existing knowledge, understanding and skills. Students develop a deeper understanding of economic and econometric theory, quantitative and research methods, and policy applications. The teaching and learning of skills are carefully integrated into the structure of the modules and degree programme. The final two modules are chosen from a range of options based upon the research interests of members of staff.

All of our MSc programmes require some mathematical analysis, and we recognise that students have widely differing backgrounds in mathematics. The first week of all our MSc programmes includes compulsory intensive teaching in mathematics, refreshing and improving your skills in order to equip you with the techniques you will need for the rest of the programme.

Students who successfully pass the taught element of the programme, proceed to the dissertation stage, where you undertake a supervised project of your choice on an Economics/Economics topic. Advice on choice of dissertation topic and management is given during the taught stage of the programme. The dissertation stage develops students’ research skills and follows on from the Research Methods module. Student dissertations are supervised by academic staff.

This Course is a unique programme in the UK higher education sector. It is based on a special agreement signed by a Consortium of nine global universities and supported by the European Commission's Socrates Programme as well as Erasmus MUNDUS. It covers analytical and research skills in economics, particularly skills relevant to business analysis, and the opportunity to apply these skills to specialist areas of international trade and European integration.

Course content

The first term of this programme covers the important theoretical background in economic analysis that will be used in analysing applied topics covered in the remainder of the programme. The second and third terms are taught by staff from partner institutions. Students spend a significant amount of their studies on applying their theoretical economics to analyse issues facing EU policy makers or policy makers in Central and East European countries which have embarked on transition to the market system. The final part of the programme, the dissertation, is usually undertaken at Staffordshire University.

Our MSc in Finance and Econometrics will give you access to exceptional teaching and facilities. Aimed at those with a prior knowledge of economics and/or mathematics, the programme provides a thorough grounding in the theory of finance, as well as the mathematical techniques needed to model complex data.

Course Content

Our MSc in Finance and Econometrics provides excellent training for careers in fields such as quantitative analysis, financial economics and financial econometrics. You'll follow a structured transition to independent research, covering topics such as financial markets, econometric methods for research and the theory of finance.

Taught by leading experts, you will complete modules to the value of 180 credits. These include 100 credits of taught modules - some core and some optional - and an 80 credit dissertation.

This programme incorporates two core modules provided by the Department of Economics (Microeconomics, Econometrics) and four core modules from the MSc Health Economics and Health Policy Programme (Introduction to Health Economics, Economic Evaluation, Statistics II, Modelling for Health Economics) and one relevant policy based optional module.

This programme provides a contrast to the long-established MSc Health Economics and Health Policy programme by providing a greater focus on the underpinning advanced economic theory and econometrics for those students with excellent undergraduate degrees in economics. However it retains the provision of the key skills associated with the conduct of economic evaluation, modelling as well as an exposure to economic policy (expected in many health economic posts).

Applied Mathematics is concerned with the development and exploitation of mathematical tools for the analysis and control of technological problems. Mathematical modelling of the problem at hand plays a basic role, followed by (numerical) analysis and (computer) simulation. Interaction with other disciplines and with specialists in the fields of application is essential.

Two specialisations

- Systems and control
This specialisation deals with the mathematics behind designing stable controllers for satellites, purification plants or more general technical processes. Questions that arise include: is it possible to suppress perturbations in a system? Or, how can one stabilize and control a system without causing shocks?

- Computational science and numerical mathematics
This specialisation emphasizes modelling, analysis and the simulation of fluid flow problems. Although the applications can be quite diverse, the basic mathematical methods are much the same. If you are capable of computing the flow of air, you are able to predict the weather, and to design cars and aeroplanes. People who can simulate the flow of water can compute the optimal shape of ships, harbours and dikes.

The focus of this course is using mathematics to solve real world problems, such as in finance, energy, engineering or scientific research. The combination of the applied nature of the mathematics that is taught, with the masters level of this course, makes this qualification highly attractive to employers.

Why study Applied Mathematics at Dundee?

Many of the topics taught are directly linked to the research that we do, so you will be learning at the cutting edge of applied mathematics.

We are a relatively small division and operate with an excellent staff/student ratio. One advantage of this is that we can get to know each student personally, and so can offer a friendly and supportive learning experience. Staff are ready and willing to help at all levels, and in addition, our Student-Staff Committee meets regularly to discuss matters of importance to our students.

We also offer students the chance to choose a selection of modules from other subject areas such as economics and finance.

Specialist software:
We have a wide selection of mathematical software packages such as MATLAB, Maple and COMSOL, which are used throughout the course.

Weekly seminar programme:
We have a weekly seminar programme in the mathematics division, which features talks in the areas of research strength in the division, Mathematical Biology, Applied Analysis, Magnetohydrodynamics and Numerical Analysis & Scientific Computing.

How you will be taught

You will learn by traditional methods such as lectures, tutorials, and workshops as well as via computer assisted learning. We teach the use of professional mathematical software packages in order to allow you to explore mathematics far beyond the limits of traditional teaching.

Individual reading and study takes a particularly important role in the Summer project. For the project, you will be guided to prepare your research project plan and to develop skills and competence in research including project management, critical thinking and problem solving, project reporting and presentation.

What you will study

This one year course involves taking four taught modules in semester 1 (September-December), followed by a further 4 taught modules in semester 2 (January-May), and undertaking a project over the Summer (May-August).
