Course overview

Careers in Sport and Exercise Science can develop in at least two directions. Firstly you can help elite athletes reach their optimum sports performance. Secondly you can help the general population to improve fitness through exercise referral and community programmes.

This course allows you to specialise in both those areas, by providing you with a solid grounding in measurement, evaluation, research methods, data analysis, and sport and exercise psychology. Additionally, you will get the chance to study applied physiology, applied biomechanics or complete a personal project. The final stage is a research project that reflects your developed knowledge and skills.

Compared to undergraduate studies, this Masters has more emphasis on self-directed lab work, data collection and analysis. We encourage you to undertake real-world internships and build up experience with external clients and sports clubs. This practical experience will complement the rigorous research elements of the course.

By the end of the course you will have a portfolio of work, feedback from clients/employers, and a record of practical and academic projects. This will give you a clear advantage when it comes to applying for jobs.

Course content

The course mixes taught elements with independent research and self-directed study. There is flexibility to pursue personal interests in considerable depth, with guidance and inspiration from Sunderland's supportive tutors.

Teaching and assessment

We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, problem-based learning seminars, web-based resources, small group discussions and debates. You will develop your practical skills with workshops and laboratory classes.

Biomechanics equipment

Our equipment can measure motion, muscle activity and forces on the body during high intensity sports and the activities of daily living. Equipment and techniques include the following:
-3D motion capture systems including Vicon® systems and Xsens® motion capture suits
-Software such as Dartfish®, Kinovea® and LongoMatch® software to capture live action images for match tagging and coaching feedback
-Movement tracking tools such as Actigraph® and Catapult®
-Delsys® Trigno electromyography equipment to see how the muscles of the body are working
-Kistler® force platforms and Batak® reaction walls to analyse sporting performance

Exercise Physiology and Psychology
Our laboratories include the most up-to-date equipment for assessing human performance. You’ll get hands-on practical experience with the following:
-Polar® Team2 heart rate monitoring system for assessing the heart rates of a full squad of team players in real time
-Cortex® gas analysers to evaluate cardiovascular performance
-Biochemical analysers from Randox®, Jenway® and Gonotec® to measure substances and enzymes within the body
-Tendo®, Myotest® and Globus® equipment to profile your strength and power and develop specific training programmes
-Fusion Sport® SMARTSPEED light gates for assessing speed, agility and reaction times
-Assess and enhance cognitive performance using our Neurotracker® 3D multiple object tracking equipment

Sports Medicine and Anatomy
Anatomy is taught by experienced staff in a specialist clinical lab using skeletons, anatomical models, 3D software, online material and human subjects. You will learn techniques for sports injury rehabilitation, including the use of sports massage and ultrasound equipment.

You will also examine balance and stability using our Biodex® stability and balance trainer and assess strength imbalances using our sophisticated Biodex® dynamometer and new BTE Primus® rehabilitation equipment. You can investigate how new techniques such as thermal imaging are being used in injury assessment with Flir® IR cameras.

Fitness and Conditioning Suite
In our lab, you'll find fitness and conditioning equipment that would be the envy of most modern gyms. From a wide range of cardiovascular equipment to machine and Olympic weights, you will receive hands-on teaching in a professional environment.

University Library Services
The University library has thousands of relevant books, e-books and journal articles, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We subscribe to useful resources such as SPORTDiscus, which provides journal articles, book chapters and summaries about sport, fitness and related disciplines.

What will you study?

The Sport and Exercise Science (MSc) programmes possess a specifically tailored curriculum focused on providing a distinctive blend of research and applied practice empowering students with the essential skills required for further postgraduate research and/or vocations in sport and exercise sciences. Teaching begins with coverage of core content required by all sport and exercise students and then provides student choice across two pathways of expertise in the sport and exercise genre; namely performance and health, each of which provide optional modules to aid students in their study choices.

The curriculum of each pathway has been carefully crafted to offer a rigorous, relevant, intellectual programme of study, supported by scholarship, practical opportunities and a research culture that develops students' theoretical understanding of their chosen discipline and its range of applications. The approaches to teaching are centred on a collaborative and inclusive learning environment which encourages the sharing of experiences, knowledge and understanding of students from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Students will therefore graduate with a degree title reflecting their chosen specialism ie MSc Sport and Exercise – Performance or MSc Sport and Exercise – Health.

Assessment

Students will be provided an induction to the language of assessment and the tools used to measure the quality of their performance in the research methods core module. For every module the assessment strategy is designed to provide personal choice and is engineered to allow the students opportunity for developing their own assessment literacies. To achieve this, students will be provided with a range of formative feed forward activities (eg, task based scenarios, practical exercises, reflective blogs, group discussion boards and forums, role play) focused on enriching their learning experiences and preparing them for their summative assessments. Depending on modules chosen, assessments will comprise; oral and/or poster presentations, viva voce, written laboratory reports, critical review, essay, laboratory manual, case study, practical competency, role play and a journal manuscript.  

Work placement scheme

Many postgraduate courses at Kingston University allow students to do a 12-month work placement as part of their course. The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student; we cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it. Your learning will be inspired by the very latest insights, and you will be supported by tutors who are engaged in research and scientific support within the areas of neuromuscular assessment and the optimisation of athletic performance. ASSESSMENT

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

Biomechanics is the study of the mechanical functioning of the biological system. This course applies biomechanical knowledge in both a sporting and clinical context.

The curriculum is research-led with a number of core modules being directly informed by the current research activity of staff. Extensive training is provided in laboratory-based skills and in the interpretation of biomechanical findings and there is comprehensive coverage of contemporary issues in biomechanics.

The course is taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorial support, practical sessions and workshops which encourage critical, reflective engagement with a range of theoretical and applied topics.

You will also be exposed to a wide range of research questions in biomechanics and learn how to critically appraise and interpret the literature. The diversity of assessment methods, including written coursework and oral viva assessment, are innovative and well received by students.

Technical Training in Biomechanics: provides technical training in laboratory techniques appropriate to sport and clinical biomechanics. It will enable you to develop laboratory skills including 2D, and 3D motion analysis, force analysis and biomechanical modelling so that you can collect and interpret biomechanical measurement and protocols to benchmark standards. The topic is taught in the laboratories in a hands-on, interactive manner.

Research Methods: provides mastery and expertise in quantitative research strategies, methods and techniques, specifically focussed on quantitative data so that you can undertake postgraduate research. It aims to encourage critical understanding of how quantitative data should be handled and analysed using a variety of approaches. The module enables you to develop critical analysis of statistical concepts and procedures, trains you to use statistical analysis software and extend your knowledge of the experimental and research design process.

Current Issues in Biomechanics: develops and extends your opportunity to investigate issues of current importance in Biomechanics. You will be presented with a variety of cutting-edge research topics in biomechanics applied to sport, exercise and clinical applications. You will need to read up-to-date literature in the appropriate fields and to evaluate past and current directions. Laboratory content will involve using measurement skills developed in the Technical Training module to replicate an experimental study from the literature.

Muscle-tendon mechanics: introduces the main biomechanical characteristics of human muscles and tendons and the implications for human movement, performance and biomechanical testing. The mechanical parameters and behaviour of these tissues of the human body in-vivo will also be examined in response to chronic loading and disuse to understand basic, musculoskeletal mechanisms and adaptations underpinning changes in whole-body function and performance.

Biomechanical assessment in sport and exercise: provides the conceptual and practical knowledge base that develops and extends understanding of biomechanical assessment. With continuous developments of equipment, software, and knowledge, there is a growing need for biomechanical assessment in sport and exercise. This has a role both in performance evaluation, in injury prevention, and in injury rehabilitation. You will be exposed to a large variety of tools, each time first gaining a better understanding of the theoretical framework that justifies the use of such tool.

Clinical Movement Analysis: provides the conceptual and practical knowledge base that develops and extends your understanding of clinical movement analysis. You will learn how to interpret gait analysis results in a clinical context through exposure to the current literature, specialised methods, and clinical case studies. You will also be exposed to the latest research developments in the unique area of virtual rehabilitation.

Content

You will study modules that provide both the theory and hands-on application in areas such as biomechanical assessment/support techniques, neuromuscular function, and biomechanics of gait. The teaching in these modules is both in-depth and highly practical, with extensive use of laboratory facilities such as Vicon 3D motion capture system, 2D video analysis, Kistler force plates, isokinetic dynamometers, ultrasound scanners, electromyography, and neuromuscular electrical stimulator.

You will also have the opportunity to gain two weeks work placement in gait laboratories of Guys and St Thomas’s Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital. Through this placement our previous graduates have developed their clinical gait analysis skills and have enhanced their employability within the field of Biomechanics.

In your research dissertation, you will have the opportunity to perform focused research in a project to be developed with our staff member with the view for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

What will I learn?

Over the year, full-time students will take six taught modules, including: Research Methods; two sports science generic modules designed to examine practitioner skills (The Applied Sports Scientist Core Competencies) and allow you to gain field-based experience of working in an applied setting (Experiential Learning in Applied Sporting Performance); and the pathway-specific module of Sports Biomechanics. You will also complete one triple-module Research Project.

How will I be taught?

You will learn and be taught by means of lectures, seminars, group work and laboratory practical sessions.
The number of contact hours for full-time students is typically six to seven hours per week, plus ad-hoc tutorials. The total study time expected for each module is 200 hours.

Within the past decade there has been a marked growth in the career opportunities available for sport and exercise biomechanists (eg teaching in further and higher education, World Class Support programmes). Coupled with this growth there has also been an increased need for appropriately qualified and accredited individuals to fill such positions. The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences has developed procedures for the accreditation of suitably experienced individuals that stipulate the possession of a relevant form of postgraduate qualification. The MSc in Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, therefore, provides students with an opportunity to study at a postgraduate level to fulfil the initial requirements for BASES accreditation, to develop their knowledge of the sport and exercise sciences and to increase their skills in applying such knowledge in both sporting and exercise populations.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level.

Applied Research Methods: This unit comprehensively prepares you for research in your chosen field. You will cover a range of research designs and approaches and will prepare you to undertake your MSc Research Project.

Research Project: Your final project will enable you to carry out an individual study in the area of sports/exercise performance.

Applied Sports Physiology: On this unit you will examine various physiological factors that affect sports performance and learn to carry our physiological tests and measures of sports performance.

Aims

Understanding how the human body works isn’t just required learning for sports coaches, specialists in biomedical engineering can help in the design, development and operation of complex medical devices. They are used in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment, to the characterisation of tissue.

This programme has a strong research and development emphasis. It aims to provide an overall knowledge base, skills and competencies, which are required in biomedical engineering, research activities and in related fields. Students will develop expertise in advanced product development and research.

Course Content

The MSc programmes in Biomedical Engineering are full-time courses, lasting one academic year of 12 consecutive months, from September to September.

The programmes consist of four core (compulsory) taught modules and two optional streams. The Biomedical, Genetics and Tissue Engineering stream has three optional modules. The second stream, Biomedical, Biomechanics and Bioelectrionics Engineering, consists of five optional modules. Foundation course at Brunel

Sport scientists support athletes or sports clubs, they generally provide advice and support, designed to monitor and improve sport performance, alongside a team of specialists including coaches, psychologist, performance managers and medical staff. Areas of expertise include • strength and conditioning • physiology • nutrition and analysis of movement and tactical performance.

Exercise scientists

Exercise scientists are more concerned with improving a person's health and helping them recover from illness through a structured programme of physical activity and other health-based interventions. They are also involved with preventative treatments and work closely with GPs and primary care trusts or private healthcare organisations. Exercise scientists might be employed by local authorities to run community based health and exercise initiatives.

It may be possible to move into a particular clinical area, such as cardiology, or work as a health promotion specialist for a local authority or healthcare trust. Our close links with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise medicine, part of which is based in Sheffield, will provide additional opportunities to those wishing to pursue careers in this area.

Pre-approved for a Masters

If you study a Bachelor Honours degrees with us, you will be pre-approved to start a Masters degree at Winchester. To be eligible, you will need to apply by the end of March in the final year of your degree and meet the entry requirements of your chosen Masters degree.

A diverse range of teaching methods are employed including lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies, practical sessions, tutorials, e-learning and individual project supervision. All supplement the students' own independent study.

Location

Taught elements of the course take place on our King Alfred Campus (Winchester) or at our West Downs Campus (Winchester). 

Assessment

Our validated courses may adopt a range of means of assessing your learning. An indicative, and not necessarily comprehensive, list of assessment types you might encounter includes essays, portfolios, supervised independent work, presentations, written exams, or practical performances.

A wide variety of assessment types are used. These include written assignments (including essays and case studies); presentations (including oral and poster presentations); portfolios (a flexible combination of assessment types which usually include providing evidence of acquired skills/competencies and critical reflection on personal development); projects; examinations and research proposals. Students also complete a substantial independent research project.

We ensure all students have an equal opportunity to achieve module learning outcomes.
