As well as downloadable applications for the consumer market, you will learn to create mobile clients for larger computer systems.

This is a full-time, on campus award with a placement but you can also study Mobile Device Application Development part-time by distance learning.

Course content

You need to be an experienced programmer before you start. Core modules on the award will teach you the programming and software engineering skills needed to develop and publish applications on three of the most popular mobile platforms: Android (Java), iOS (Objective-C) and Windows Phone (C#).

You will also study the design aspects of mobile systems, from user interface design to the design of enterprise systems which incorporate mobility.

You will undertake 12 month industrial placement where the University will advise you and help you in finding a placement opportunity. There is also a non-sandwich version of this award, which does not include the placment.

You will undertake an MSc dissertation which will involve researching and demonstrating advanced techniques in mobile application development.

Our laboratories are equipped with high-spec PCs with development environments for Android (Android Studio) and Windows Phone. iPhone and iPad development is supported with a laboratory of iMacs equipped with the XCode developer toolset. There are a variety of mobile devices available for application deployment and testing.

About the School of Engineering and Digital Arts

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts successfully combines modern engineering and technology with the exciting new field of digital media.

Established over 40 years ago, the School has developed a top-quality teaching and research base, receiving excellent ratings in both research and teaching assessments.

The School undertakes high-quality research that has had significant national and international impact, and our spread of expertise allows us to respond rapidly to new developments. Our 30 academic staff and over 130 postgraduate students and research staff provide an ideal focus to effectively support a high level of research activity. Course structure

The MSc begins in late September and finishes in September of the following year, and consists of approximately six months of coursework followed by a short period reserved for examinations and a four-month project.

EL881 - Android Application Design (15 credits)
This module is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the Android operating system. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification.

EL882 - iPhone Application Design (15 credits)
This module is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the iPhone. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification.

EL883 - Mobile Web Development (15 credits)

EL884 - Mobile Application Design Project (30 credits)
A mobile application will be developed for a platform agreed between the student and the supervisor either in an industrial context or within the School.

EL885 - Research Methods and Project Design for Mobile Apps (15 credits)

CO871 - Advanced Java for Programmers (15 credits)
This module provides for well-qualified computer science students entering the MSc programme from a range of backgrounds. These students will have good programming skills but will not necessarily have used Java or another object-oriented language extensively. This module seeks to ensure that students have the Java and object-oriented design skills necessary for the rest of their programme.

CO881 - Object-Oriented Programming (15 credits)
This module provides an introduction to object-oriented programming using the popular Java language. It is designed for beginners who have not studied computer programming before. By the end students will be able to develop simple programmes using Java. (Note that students with substantial prior experience of programming take module CO871 Advanced Java for Programmers[1] instead.)

EL890 - MSc Project (60 credits)
A major practical system will be developed either in an industrial context or within the department. There are no formal lectures - students will undertake the work in their own time under the regular supervision of a member of the academic staff and, where appropriate, industrial collaborators.

Assessment

The project module is examined by a presentation and dissertation. The Research Methods and Project Design module is examined by several components of continuous assessment. The other modules are assessed by examinations and smaller components of continuous assessment. MSc students must gain credits from all the modules (180 credits in total). For the PDip, you must gain at least 120 credits in total, and pass certain modules to meet the learning outcomes of the PDip programme.

This MSc provides significant technical content which will inform the management decision making process. In this context major organisations such as Tesco, Sainsbury and Amazon have been making significant investment into data warehousing and data mining technologies.

To effectively use this technology requires a large number of people to apply and manage the technology. The price of the technology has reduced significantly since the inception of data warehousing with Microsoft and Oracle supplying the appropriate add-on tools to their database management system products. These factors allow smaller organisations to gain a competitive advantage by utilising the large pool of transactional data that in some cases has been stored for many years.

In an industrial context, students may be required to manage teams of developers in small to large scale projects. To efficiently manage such projects, they will require a significant technical understanding of the issues arising to be able to appreciate the complexity of the tasks to be undertaken.

Indeed, in an SME this role is often fulfilled by a senior member of the development staff with both development and management duties. As either a developer or manager, the graduate would be expected to demonstrate their initiative and be able to use their research skills to rapidly adapt to the demands of new technology.

Assessment

Student works are assessed through combination of course works, lab based practical exams and written exam. The final mark for some modules may include one or more pieces of course work set and completed during the module. Project work is assessed by a written report and oral presentation. Part 2 of the MSc programme requires the student to research and prepare an individual project/dissertation of a substantial nature.

You will be guided through best research practices to develop your ability to investigate, analyse and communicate research at a master’s level; as well as encouraging you to consider future trends and technologies that will shape the world of tomorrow.

An optional placement provides an opportunity to embellish your portfolio and prove your newly acquired skills in the workplace as part of your master’s study.

The award culminates in the dissertation, which is your opportunity to develop your specialism to become a subject-matter-expert through research and application of advanced theories and principles, ideally placing you to take advantage of vocational opportunities or progress to further postgraduate study.

You can study this course in a number of study modes:
-Full-time on-campus
-Full-time on-campus with a placement
-Full-time on-campus following an preliminary semester (Extended International Masters Programme) with or without a placement.
-Part-time distance-learning

The Extended International Programme offers extra modules on employability, computing and study skills including writing in English.

This mode is designed to accommodate the needs of international students who require additional support in these areas.
