This is a full-time, on campus award with a placement but you can also study Mobile Device Application Development part-time by distance learning.

Course content

You need to be an experienced programmer before you start. Core modules on the award will teach you the programming and software engineering skills needed to develop and publish applications on three of the most popular mobile platforms: Android (Java), iOS (Objective-C) and Windows Phone (C#).

You will also study the design aspects of mobile systems, from user interface design to the design of enterprise systems which incorporate mobility.

You will undertake 12 month industrial placement where the University will advise you and help you in finding a placement opportunity. There is also a non-sandwich version of this award, which does not include the placment.

You will undertake an MSc dissertation which will involve researching and demonstrating advanced techniques in mobile application development.

Our laboratories are equipped with high-spec PCs with development environments for Android (Android Studio) and Windows Phone. iPhone and iPad development is supported with a laboratory of iMacs equipped with the XCode developer toolset. There are a variety of mobile devices available for application deployment and testing.

As a student on the MRes Stochastic Processes programme you will study a range of topics for the taught element including:

The Stochastic Processes: Theory and Application course consists of a taught part (60 credits) and a research project (120 credits). Students will have a personal supervisor for their research project from the start of their studies.

Research projects could be of a theoretical mathematical nature, or they could be more applied, for example in financial mathematics or actuarial studies. Some of the research projects will be of an interdisciplinary character in collaboration with some of Swansea's world class engineers. For such projects it is likely that EPSRC funding would be available.

Facilities

The Aubrey Truman Reading Room, located in the centre of the Department of Mathematics, houses the departmental library and computers for student use. It is a popular venue for students to work independently on the regular example sheets set by their lecturers, and to discuss Mathematics together.

Our main university library, Information Services and Systems (ISS), contains a notably extensive collection of Mathematics books.

Careers

The ability to think rationally and to process data clearly and accurately are highly valued by employers. Mathematics graduates earn on average 50% more than most other graduates. The most popular areas are the actuarial profession, the financial sector, IT, computer programming and systems administration, and opportunities within business and industry where employers need mathematicians for research and development, statistical analysis, marketing and sales.

Some of our students have been employed by AXA, BA, Deutsche Bank, Shell Research, Health Authorities and Local Government. Teaching is another area where maths graduates will find plenty of career opportunities.

Portfolio

In addition to the general application materials required by the University of Alabama Graduate School and the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy & Technology Studies, applicants must construct an application portfolio, as required by Ala. This international oriented 2-year master’s degree programme is based on the following pillars:

The HCI Master was developed based upon our experiences with the long-standing Computer Science & Media Master program. CS&M graduates have all readily found employment in industry and academia, in R&D departments at large companies (e.g. Volkswagen, BMW), research institutes (e.g. Fraunhofer), as well as at universities, with many continuing into a PhD.

Usability is becoming more and more important for computer systems as computers are embedded in many aspects of everyday life. Higher Education Entrance Qualification:

Students need a school leaving certificate for studies completed at secondary education level. The formal entrance qualifications for international students are checked by uni-assist (see application process).

Academic Background in Computer Science (CS):

You need some academic background in CS, such as a bachelor's degree in CS, business informatics, HCI or related areas with a focus on CS and HCI. Students with a minor in computer science (at least 60 European Credit Points) may apply, here, decisions are on a case-by-case-base.

Only diplomas of international accredited universities will be accepted. Non-academic, practical experience in computer science alone does not suffice to qualify you.

Sufficient Marks from previous studies:

If the converted credit-weighted average grade of your Bachelor's degree is between 1.0 and 2.0 in the German system, your chances of acceptance are very good. Uni-assist does the conversion into the German system.

Tissues in the human body have a defined structure in that their growth and differentiation have developed in specific ways to create a cellular architecture that supports their function. Following this fundamental principle that ‘from structure comes function’ we can develop in vitro models that resemble elements of the anatomy and physiology of real human tissues. This can be achieved through our understanding of tissue development and morphology, and the application of innovative technologies to build mature, functional tissue equivalents. Such innovation often occurs at the interface between disciplines such as biological, chemistry, and engineering.
In my laboratory, we specialise in the development of novel approaches to culturing cells in vitro, to enhance cell viability, growth, and differentiation, to enable the creation of human tissue mimetics that can subsequently be used for basic research, drug screening, and the assessment of chemicals. Cell biology-based Master by Research projects are available in tissue engineering in various areas, notably: epithelial biology (for example, skin, oral mucosa, intestine); neural biology (for example, in vitro models of neurological disorders); and basic biological mechanisms involved in stem cell differentiation, tissue development and function in vitro. In other projects, we are also interested in developing new cell technologies to further improve the culture and differentiation of human tissues in vitro and invite applicants who are interested in working at the interface between biology and the physical sciences. The exact nature of the project will be determined in discussions with the applicant but will involve engineering human tissues in vitro and their development, characterisation, and application in areas consistent with our fields of interest. The MRes in Bioengineering prepares students for research careers in Bioengineering, equipping them to analyse and solve problems using an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. Graduates of the programme will be able to pursue careers at the interface between the physical, biological and medical sciences in academia, industry, the public sector and non-governmental organisations. The programme provides a solid foundation for those who intend to go on to study for a PhD.

The programme includes lectures, workshops, seminars, practical work and a period of full-time work on a significant research project. The course will prepare students to analyse and solve problems in bioengineering using an integrated, multidisciplinary approach.

The programme consists of a taught element (25%) and research element (75%). Core modules of the taught element include Computational methods for bioengineering, Statistics and data analysis, the MRes Journal Club, a minimum of 2 electives, and Research seminar. The Electives of the taught element include for example Biomechanics, Computational neuroscience, Biomaterials, Machine learning and neural computation, Image processing and Brain-machine interfaces.
