A graduate degree in apparel and textiles enables students to pursue careers in higher education, business, and government. The program prepares students for careers in college teaching, research, extension, education administration, marketing, consumer service, product development/evaluation, and entrepreneurship. Emphasis is placed on the development of analytical skills and problem-solving skills and equips graduate students for continued intellectual and career growth. Graduates receive the degree of Master of Science in human environmental sciences, with a major in clothing and textiles.

PROGRAM OF STUDY

Students in the graduate program may concentrate in the behavioral aspects of clothing; the international aspects of textiles and apparel; or historic costume and textiles. The faculty assists each graduate student in planning an individualized program suited to the student’s career goals. The program requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate courses. A graduate course in statistics must be completed successfully. Graduate students are encourages to participate in research and service activities of the faculty as a means of developing direction for the graduate program. Since graduate courses in the department have prerequisites, students should contact the Department of Clothing, Textiles and Interior Design for information about minimum preparation for graduate study.

PROGRAM FACULTY

At present, we have faculty doing research in the following areas:

- Dr. Marcy Koontz has been exploring the scholarship of engagement in higher education for the several years. Her work focuses on the implementation and assessment of meaningful sustainable projects that engage students in the local community - from preservation of cultural heritage resources to helping develop and implement innovative programs that address community issues from a design perspective. Her previous research focused on emerging technologies with an emphasis on the application of advanced computer graphics software in the field of apparel and textiles, and developing and constructing advanced computer-based curricula for apparel and textiles instruction.

- Dr. Amanda J. Thompson's topics of research include textile science issues, historic and archaeological textile analysis, and cultural interpretation of textiles and the crafts that support textiles. She also is working with alternative fibers and 3D printing and its use in textiles.

- Dr. Michelle (Xiao) Tong's current research interests include soft-goods branding management, E-commerce, international marketing and international trade of textiles and apparel products.

- Dr. Virginia Wimberley's research deals with application of microscopy and other analytical methodology to the analysis of pre-historic, historic and contemporary dress and textiles for their contributions to the material culture. She has worked on Native American prehistoric collections from Ohio, Georgia and Alabama. Currently she is starting an investigation of the role of clothing in sex role stereotyping by preschool children.

FACILITIES

The Department of Clothing, Textiles and Interior Design maintains the Carolyn Stewart Historic Costume Collection and the Comer Historic Textiles Collection for use in teaching and research. The University’s research facilities include the Mary Harmon Bryant Hall which is the repository for the department’s historic costume and textile collections with the Mary Harmon Moman Doll Collection and the Wade Hall and Greg Swem Quilt Collection, as well as other University collections; Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library, which belongs to the selective Association of Research Libraries; Central Analytical Facility; and the Seebeck Computer Center. Excellent computing capabilities exist within the College. Campus agencies that foster interdisciplinary research include the Small Business Development Center, the Capstone International Center, the Hess Institute, and the Institute for Social Science Research.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Analyze the changing face of the Canadian Textile and apparel industry in context with shifting global sourcing and manufacturing centres.
• Determine strategies and formulate a production plan for developing new fashion/cosmetic/fragrance products that are consistent with evolving market needs using Supply Chain Management principles.
• Strategically analyze the process of brand development, market positioning and new fashion/cosmetic/fragrance trends, and evaluate potential impact.
• Determine entrepreneurship strategies in both large and small companies.
• Develop replenishment processes for product inventory and develop pricing and market positioning strategies which take into account competitive pressures, manufacturing costs and corporate objectives.
• Create visual merchandising promotional images using specialized industry software.
• Formulate a strategic business plan based on the ever changing face of retail operations, and conduct primary research on market and manufacturing conditions in order to determine existing and potential levels of activity for particular fashion and cosmetic products.
• Evaluate the types of multi-channel retailing methods and determine the most optimum strategic mix for an organization.
• Evaluate product marketing in an international market.
• Prepare and deliver a sales/marketing/promotional presentation.

Your Career

According to City of Toronto data, the fashion industry employs nearly 50,000 people. Fashion design, wholesaling and retailing have grown dramatically in the last five years, with 10,000 fashion-related jobs. There are 4,600 fashion retail firms in Toronto that generate annual sales of $2.6 billion. Sales have grown by 6.4 per cent in the last year. Employment in the wholesale and retail trade grew by 34.5 per cent or 13,000 jobs in the last five years.

Graduates may find employment in companies that develop, manufacture, market, import, wholesale, distribute or retail fashion apparel and accessories. Employment settings include apparel suppliers, wholesale distribution companies, fashion retail companies, importers and logistics firms, marketing divisions within major retail operations, and up and coming online businesses. The program equips you for roles such as product development manager, private label/brand manager, retail manager, event manager, retail buyer, fashion manager relating to sourcing, logistics co-ordinator, inventory control manager, visual merchandiser, promotion manager or planner. Online retailing offers positions in community management, social media marketing and opportunities in customer service inventory management.

We currently have two research centres within the faculty. The Creative Industries Research and Innovation Centre was established in 2005 and is a knowledge transfer centre for projects that support the creative industries in Wales.

Current projects include Moving Image Wales, which supports the digital media industry, the Textiles Technologies Project, which supports the textiles and apparel industries, CIME, which supports business through creative intervention and SATnet, which provides a link between artists and businesses in the science and technology sectors. In addition, IPCRES is also based in CIRIC and is developing and disseminating research about durational and event-based practices.

Alongside the numerous projects operating within CIRIC, there is also a Design Bureau, with water jet cutting, laser cutting and fabric printing services. The Centre for Lens Arts and Science Interaction is a research centre based within The Dynevor Centre for Art, Design, and Media at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Swansea (formerly Swansea Metropolitan University). The DIT School of Retail and Services Management has devised this Postgraduate Diploma in Fashion Buying and Management and customized it to the needs of the Fashion Industry. This highly anticipated route of study is one year full-time in duration.The design reflects the educational requirements and learning opportunities necessary to succeed as a fashion buyer in today`s competitive environment.The Postgraduate Diploma programme will bring together both industry experts and educators in the respective module areas.

Course Content

The first semester introduces participants to the principles of Fashion Buying I. Materials and Fabrics, Sociology of Fashion, Finance for non-financial Managers, and Marketing Luxury Brands and Retail Merchandising Analytics.

In the second semester students study a more specialist area with Fashion Buying II, complemented by modules such as Store Environment, Fashion Public Relations and Communications, Retail Operations Management and International Fashion Retailing.

Throughout the year, a series of Fashion Seminars will be delivered. These seminars will allow for the students to interact with key industry figures and be kept informed of the latest industry developments. International travel will also be an important feature of the programme.

The first trip to Paris takes place in February. The aim of this trip is primarily to attend the Premiere Vision fabric trade fair and experience firsthand the demands of the apparel industry. The learning outcomes of this trip our examined by continuous assessment.

Later in the semester, students travel to an Irish and UK based fabric mill with The National Tailoring Academy who deliver the Materials and Fabric module throughout semester 1.

This innovative and progressive course will give you the opportunity to develop your creative, technical, and critical skills in fashion and textile design, while extending your practice in a conceptual and professional context.

The course combines intensive, studio-based projects with design research, as well as furthering your understanding and working knowledge of the techniques and processes specific to your chosen field of fashion and textile design. You’ll also learn to consider your design practice in terms of the technological, social, critical and ecological issues that influence fashion and textile design, while extending your understanding of business and entrepreneurship through industry briefs and external projects.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop advanced research skills and explore issues related to design practice, including new technology, globalisation and sustainability. This will be informed by your work with academics, practitioners and experts in the field of fashion design and textile design.

We use a broad range of teaching and learning strategies, including lectures, seminars and studio practice. You’ll take part in presentations, group activities, study groups and individual tutorials to discuss, debate and critique your work alongside your peers. You’ll work in our specialist workshops that include digital print and CAD facilities, knit, weave and print equipment, fashion sewing and pattern-making resources and an extensive specialist art and design library.

Our teaching staff are active in professional practice, research and scholarship and are members of research groups covering digital and material arts and sustainable art and design.

Key Features

Students use the Masters Programme for all kinds of reasons; to gain an extra qualification, to achieve a higher and more sophisticated level of practice, as well as to have supported research and development time in order to elevate themselves to a more professional plateau with their artwork. Students from the Masters Programme have gone on to many varied careers in teaching and lecturing positions, in community arts and the cultural industries in general. Lots have continued to practice as artists and some have progressed to PhD study.

The programme has access to well equipped workshops including a resin, plaster, wood, metal and ceramic.
Beyond this specialist equipment, you will also have access to an extensive range of facilities including an excellent library, open-access computer suits and workshops in other areas within the art school. 
We currently have two research centres within the faculty.These research centres provide staff with research opportunities and access to high technology resources, they provide students with placement opportunity whilst also developing the creative industries infrastructure in the region, which will benefit graduating students.

CIRIC The Creative Industries Research and Innovation Centre was established in 2005 and is a knowledge transfer centre for projects that support the creative industries in Wales.

Current projects include Moving Image Wales, which supports the digital media industry, the Textiles Technologies Project, which supports the textiles and apparel industries, CIME, which supports business through creative intervention and SATnet, which provides a link between artists and businesses in the science and technology sectors. In addition, IPCRES is also based in CIRIC and is developing and disseminating research about durational and event based practices.

Alongside the numerous projects operating within CIRIC, there is also a Design Bureau, with water jet cutting, laser cutting and fabric printing services.

 The Centre for Lens Arts and Science Interaction is a research centre based within The Dynevor Centre for Art, Design, and Media at Swansea Metropolitan University. CLASI aims to encourage and promote interdisciplinary research projects, which stimulate research, innovation, and experimentation across photographic, digital and electronic arts. A strong emphasis is placed on research strands where the histories, philosophies and practices of art and science intersect. The definition of art and science is intentionally broad and the centre is aligned with SATnet and CIRIC.

Assessment

Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities. However, it is likely that art and design students will incur some additional costs to extend their investigation of their personal practice. For example, purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining in optional study trips, and printing.

This is a one-year, industry-led programme, which gives you the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge of contemporary fashion buying and merchandising from a managerial perspective. Developed in conjunction with industry specialists to inform innovative projects and maintain contemporary content and foster innovative projects.

Throughout the Master’s you will develop professional, managerial and personal abilities, including commercial awareness, negotiating and relationship management skills, alongside developing your visual skills in a business context to enable you to operate successfully within the global industry.

You will also gain an in-depth knowledge of finance, industry developments, profit margins, pricing, sales strategies and turnover and how to confidently convey your ideas through successful communication and contemporary presentation.

About the Course

You will gain a deep understanding of the role of the buyer and merchandiser, and gain the ability to strategically plan and select a range of high quality garments, while considering the profitable development of a company.

By undertaking a variety of projects, you will learn how to analyse the factors that influence sales alongside personal and practical presentation skills. You will also learn how to build a range of profitable garments for wholesale, retail or online sales.

This is a one-year, industry-led programme, which gives you the opportunity to develop your specialist knowledge of contemporary fashion marketing from a managerial perspective. Developed in conjunction with industry specialists to inform innovative and maintain contemporary content.

You will develop the ability to strategically plan and instigate complex marketing campaigns. Throughout your studies you will gain an understanding of the development of creative and sophisticated visual marketing methods for promoting fashion. You will work within a commercial context to address pressing new agendas surrounding fashion marketing, such as fashion consumption, ethics, sustainability, consumerism, economic and political influences.

Briefs will be informed by industry, spanning print, new media, experiential events, new emerging technical environments and media relations. The course cultivates intellectual and analytical approaches to your research, which will enhance your managerial skills for increased employability.

About the Course

You will study units which will give you an in-depth understanding of how fashion brands are promoted in the competitive, global market place and will cover subject areas such as e-commerce, copywriting, fashion forecasting, magazine publishing, styling, and photography and will be underpinned by business management theories.
