Applications are invited for an MSc by Research fees funded studentship post commencing 19th March 2018. The Studentship is open to home/EU students. It will run for 1 year and the fees of the MSc by Research programme will be paid by the Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR) at the University of Bedfordshire.
ISPAR delivers research spanning across sport science, physical activity, health, psychology, behaviour change, pedagogy and social sciences of sport. In the latest Research Excellent Framework assessment 95% of our research was rated as internationally recognised or better.
The Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR) and the Institute for Research in Applicable Computing (IRAC) at the University of Bedfordshire have partnered to deliver this exciting interdisciplinary research project. The project will undertake an evaluation of a mobile phone app and online platform developed by these two research institutes to promote the health and wellbeing of breast cancer patients. The app and online platform are designed to empower patients in their healthcare by encouraging them to self-manage their condition. The tools help to monitor health, medication reminders, medical appointments, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, pain, and fatigue, which are common problems in cancer patients. The app also delivers the patient tips and reminders for healthy behaviours and provides interactive visualisation of the patient’s data, which can be shared with medical professionals to inform clinical decisions.
The successful candidate will undertake a research project to evaluate the effects of these tools on quality of life, pain, fatigue, physical activity, and sedentary behaviour in breast cancer patients. The candidate will gain research experience in a clinical setting and will work within an interdisciplinary team on this exciting project. It is expected that the student will contribute to the study design, NHS ethical approval process, delivery and evaluation of the intervention, and author a journal publication to disseminate the findings.
The applicant will gain experience in the design, conduct and presentation of research relating to the project. Applicants will have a good first degree (minimum of 2:1) in a relevant discipline (e.g. physical activity, sport and exercise science, applied computing, biomedical science).

As innovations have become increasingly bound to digital solutions in recent years, capabilities in creativity, sustainability and innovation are changing. Digital innovation will move beyond the simple app into life-enhancing services and experiences, exploiting the hyper-connectivity of data and the 'internet of things'.
This course is designed to suit creative individuals with business acumen who would like to visualise complex data flows and strategic communication processes.
The course offers an industry focused postgraduate experience, that hybrids digital design practices with strategic communication and brand management to capture, control, and visualise complex data and to make strategic decisions in an ever connected society that is rapidly becoming aware of the impacts and new digital economy.
This course comprises eight assessed modules, a group project and an individual project.
Group projects run from February to April and provide teams of students with the opportunity to take responsibility for a consultancy type project, usually with an industrial sponsor.
The final individual thesis project takes up the remainder of the course to September. It allows students to demonstrate their ability to think and work in an original way and overcome genuine problems in design, supported by external organisations.

The Computer Science MSc provides a balance between computer science theory and practical software engineering skills, including teamwork for industrial or research clients. Graduates find employment in the IT industry, or complement their first degree subject with computer science knowledge, leading to interdisciplinary industrial positions and PhD research.
You will learn fundamental aspects of how computers work by taking modules in computer architecture, operating systems, compilers, data structures and algorithms. You will also gain practical knowledge in areas such as human-computer interaction, App design, databases and software engineering. You will develop programming skills in modern languages, such as object-oriented Java for Android development.
Team working, project planning and communication skills are developed by working in small groups developing software for real industrial and research clients. Optional modules allow specialisation in subjects such as functional programming, computer music, entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a research project (60 credits).
Students must choose a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 45 credits from Group One options. For the remaining credits, students can choose up to 30 credits from Group Two options and up to 15 credits from Electives.

All students undertake an independent computer-based science project which culminates in a dissertation in the form of a project report.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures and tutorials. Lectures are often supported by laboratory work with help from demonstrators. Student performance is assessed by unseen written examinations, coursework and a substantial individual project.

The recent growth in new media management has seen a rise in and demand for skilled creative media management professionals, who are not only confident in deploying media technologies and platforms but also in management practices, methods and experience to drive forward the latest media advances.
Your studies are based in our modern media labs in the Department of Media Arts and Communication. Many of our academic staff bring industry experience to their teaching. The course also includes a regular programme of industry speakers and client based projects, as well as a foundation for those wishing to move into media management roles within organisations, recognise existing skills and knowledge through a formal qualification, or start their own media business.
The course is made up of eight taught modules, plus a major linked project where you could work with or within an organisation. All modules are mandatory and have been tailored to match the in demand skills and experience of the creative media industry. The vast majority of teaching is in small groups (typically less than 20) allowing for bespoke delivery.
Students will gain an understanding of how to exploit the latest digital media technologies and platforms, across interactive, social and mobile content, as well as the management of digital media businesses, organisations and teams. The course uses industry-standard software and hardware tools such as Adobe and Apple software in well-equipped media studios and associated lab facilities.
