This part time new MSc course in Musculoskeletal Neuroscience offers musculoskeletal healthcare professionals, such as chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths the opportunity to study modern neuroscience with a focus on the application in a clinical setting.

Introduction

Applications are invited for an MSc by Research fees funded studentship post commencing 16th October 2018. The Studentship is open to home/EU students. It will run for 1 year and the fees of the MSc by Research programme will be paid by the Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR) at the University of Bedfordshire. 

ISPAR delivers research spanning across sport science, physical activity, health, psychology, behaviour change, pedagogy and social sciences of sport. In the latest Research Excellent Framework assessment 95% of our research was rated as internationally recognised or better. 

About the project

The Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR) and the Institute for Research in Applicable Computing (IRAC) at the University of Bedfordshire have partnered to deliver this exciting interdisciplinary research project. The project will undertake an evaluation of a mobile phone app and online platform developed by these two research institutes to promote the health and wellbeing of breast cancer patients. The app and online platform are designed to empower patients in their healthcare by encouraging them to self-manage their condition. The tools help to monitor health, medication reminders, medical appointments, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, pain, and fatigue, which are common problems in cancer patients. The app also delivers the patient tips and reminders for healthy behaviours and provides interactive visualisation of the patient’s data, which can be shared with medical professionals to inform clinical decisions. 

The successful candidate will undertake a research project to evaluate the effects of these tools on quality of life, pain, fatigue, physical activity, and sedentary behaviour in breast cancer patients. The candidate will gain research experience in a clinical setting and will work within an interdisciplinary team on this exciting project. It is expected that the student will contribute to the study design, NHS ethical approval process, delivery and evaluation of the intervention, and author a journal publication to disseminate the findings. 

Candidate requirements

The applicant will gain experience in the design, conduct and presentation of research relating to the project. Applicants will have a good first degree (minimum of 2:1) in a relevant discipline (e.g. physical activity, sport and exercise science, applied computing, biomedical science). 

Supervisor:

The student will be under the supervision of: 

- Dr Daniel Bailey Senior Lecturer in Health, Nutrition and Exercise; Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research 

- Dr Angel Chater, Reader in Health Psychology and Behaviour Change; Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research 

Funding: ISPAR will pay the fees of £4,222; there are no bench fees associated with this project. The post will not include a bursary.

Taught jointly by the School of Computing and the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, this course will give you a grasp of all layers needed for mobile communication and computation, from the physical network layer through to the applications that run on mobile devices.

You’ll gain a full understanding of the web and cloud computing infrastructure, as core modules give you a foundation in key topics like systems programming and data communications. A range of optional modules will then allow you to focus on topics that suit your interests and career plans, from cloud computing to embedded systems design and high speed web architecture.

Learning and teaching

Our groundbreaking research feeds directly into teaching, and you’ll have regular contact with staff who are at the forefront of their disciplines. You’ll have regular contact with them through lectures, seminars, tutorials, small group work and project meetings.

Independent study is also important to the programme, as you develop your problem-solving and research skills as well as your subject knowledge.

Assessment

You’ll be assessed using a range of techniques including case studies, technical reports, presentations, in-class tests, assignments and exams. Optional modules may also use alternative assessment methods.

Projects

The professional project is one of the most satisfying elements of this course. It allows you to apply what you’ve learned to a piece of research focusing on a real-world problem, and it can be used to explore and develop your specific interests.Most projects are experimentally based and linked with companies within the oil and gas industry to ensure the topic of research is relevant to the field whilst also addressing a real-world problem.

A proportion of projects are formally linked to industry, and can include spending time at the collaborator’s site over the summer.

Career opportunities

Career opportunities are extremely broad, covering jobs in the design of embedded software running on multi-core devices through to jobs involving the design and implementation of new mobile-applications centric systems for business. In the application of mobile computing skills, job opportunities span every area, from the automotive sector through to retail and banking.

You could launch a career in fields such as mobile app development, mobile systems architecture, project management, network consultancy. You could also work as an engineer in embedded mobile communications, network security or research and development among many others – and you’ll even be well-prepared for PhD study.

We offer advocacy training and group sessions that offer true-to-life mock trials, assessments, 'mini chambers' and real-life legal work experience opportunities.

Manchester Law School has a proud history of providing barrister training in the North West and as a result has outstanding links to both the local legal profession and the Northern Circuit (Chambers in Cheshire, Liverpool, Manchester and Preston). Practitioners from the Northern Circuit will provide you with Additional Advocacy Classes for students and are on-hand at regular events to offer advice about your future as a barrister and obtaining pupillage.

You will receive approximately 42 hours of criminal and civil advocacy plus assessments, which is over three times the minimum required by the BSB. We also offer Additional Classes with barristers who are in full time practice to give you further opportunities to develop your advocacy skills.

Additional Professional Programme (APP)

An innovative feature of Manchester Law School’s BPTC programme. The APP bridges the gap between student and professional life, and prepares you for the Bar. There is a whole range of extra curricula, career-boosting activities of which you can take advantage. About the Course

The BPTC focuses on developing highly practical skills and features an innovative 'mini-chambers' approach designed to mirror the real life working practices of a barrister. You will be placed in a group (or chambers) with 11 other students and be provided with a permanent, multimedia-equipped base room. You will be expected to 'perform' regularly in front of your fellow students to encourage the development of strong working relationships similar to a professional chambers.

The BPTC begins with a participative and dynamic induction programme introducing students to the highly practical BPTC, compared with academic study. Students are almost immediately offered the opportunity to network with local practitioners during a team building exercise and social event. Following this induction, the remainder of the course features a combination of compulsory subjects and an opportunity to study two subjects of your choice, depending on your particular career aspirations.

This online masters degree is for audio professionals who wish to enhance and formalise their industrial experience with industry relevant theory and practices.

The degree is made up of three parts: taught classes, work-based learning, and a research project. All of these elements are designed to apply theory and advanced practice to enhance current approaches to sound design for linear and interactive media.

The MSc Sound Design is delivered over either 18 or 30 months on a part time basis. All of the modules are delivered by distance learning. In addition, you will also develop a deep understanding of how to assess approaches of affecting audiences’ perceptions of linear and interactive media using sound design.

Emphasis is placed on cognisance with professional standards for the production and documentation of sound designs for linear and interactive media, and familiarity with a comprehensive set of methods of assessing listening experiences.

The course builds upon Edinburgh Napier University’s close contacts with internationally recognised professional sound designers for both linear and interactive media.

Year 1

In the first year, you will study Advanced Professional Practice (APP) for three trimesters. This allows you to tailor your learning needs to those of your organisation or the relevant industries.
Within the first few weeks of this module, under the direction of your academic supervisor you will develop your own learning agreement, which defines the deliverables of this module. If you are an employee you will do this in negotiation with your organisation.

If you are freelance, you may either negotiate with key clients or discuss an equivalent with your supervisor. Your supervisor will mentor you throughout the three trimesters towards the achievement of the deliverables. You will provide a reflective journal on your learning.
During the first year, you will also study one module per trimester: sound design for linear media, listening and sound design for interactive media. These modules will be taken in the order determined by the date of entry to the course.

Each module is independent of the others. One objective of the APP module is for you to apply immediately, in your practice, the knowledge gained from these three taught modules. After successful completion of the year, you will be eligible for a PG Dip Sound Design. In the second year, you will complete your MSc dissertation in part time mode.

Year 2

Masters Dissertation

In this 60 credit module you will take control of your studies to produce a substantial piece of focussed academic research. Success in the dissertation module indicates an ability to work independently, so you are expected to take the initiative and manage your own project. In effect, you are undertaking independent research as an apprenticeship to an experienced academic supervisor.

This degree gives you the opportunity to build on existing competencies and develop new skills in linear and interactive media sound design. The emphasis is on becoming an advanced sound professional within linear and/or interactive media.

The BPTC element of this combined course is designed to prepare you for life as a barrister. The BPTC at Manchester Law School is focused on building highly practical skills and features an innovative ‘mini-chambers’ approach, designed to mirror the real-life practices of a barrister.
