Study Pathways

You can choose one of the following Study Pathways as part of this programme:

MA Education:
The MA Education is our most popular degree and allows you the greatest flexibility in choice of units and dissertation topic (with the exception of those opting to take the International Baccalaureate Educator Certificates who are required to take specific units).

MA Education (International Education):
This pathway is designed for those who wish to develop knowledge and an understanding of issues relating to education beyond the national context. Depending upon your interests, you can focus on issues relating to educational practices in different national systems, on international schools and/or on other issues cutting across national contexts.

MA Education (Learning and Teaching):
If you wish to develop the practice and your understanding of Learning and Teaching then this is the pathway for you. Core units draw on theory of learning and teaching processes (with children and adults) and the role of technology.

MA Education (Educational Leadership and Management):
This pathway is designed to meet the needs of experienced educational professionals who wish to inform their work as leaders and managers, or who aspire to a leadership role, through an in-depth understanding of current educational management practice, theory, research and policy.

If you wish, you can complete the programme entirely though distance learning, however we recommend you try to attend at least one face-to-face unit as it is valuable to spent time in a study environment with tutors and other students.

Programme structure

For the 90 credits required for the MA Education, you acquire 60 credits through taught units and 30 credits by completing a dissertation. Typically, you complete five 12 credit taught units. One of the taught units must be the Research Methods in Education which is worth 12 credits, another of the taught units must be Understanding Learners and Learning or Education and Society (your choice may depend on which pathway you choose).

- Distance learning study commences at two fixed points in the year, 1st March and 1st September.
- Units taught at Summer School start in July
- Units are taught at Study Centres throughout the year.
- You can study units in any order, but you must complete each unit within six months.
- 175 study hours is expected for each unit.
- You can study up to two units at any one time and you have between two and five years to complete the programme.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed by assignment and dissertation. As you progress through the units and successfully pass the assignments, you will receive feedback and grades, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

Teaching methods at Summer Schools and Study Centres include; lectures, student-led seminars, workshops, group work, tutorials, Moodle (virtual learning environment), and other electronic communications.

If there are less than six students enrolled on a unit scheduled at Summer School, the unit will still run, but it may be taught on a Directed Tutorial basis. You will be provided with resources to help your study and individual or group tutorials will be timetabled in order to make sure your learning needs are fully met.

Distance Learning takes place online; enabling you to study independently with the support of a tutor. The Wiki environment offers you a number of alternatives for working flexibly with your learning materials. In addition, there are opportunities to link up with other students and leave feedback about your experience.

Methods of assessment

Assessment consists of a written 5000 word assignment for each unit of study, together with a 15,000 word Dissertation.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

If you have studied, but not completed or received an award, for postgraduate Masters level units in education from another institution, you may be eligible to transfer credit for this prior learning.

- Depending on the programme of study, you may transfer up to 40% of the total credits required for the MA/Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

- Credit must have been obtained recently (less than 8 years ago at the time of the award of the qualification to which it contributes).

- Claims for APL will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

- If you obtain APL you will still be required to study Research Methods in Education and either Education and Society or Understanding Learners and Learning (unless your previous study has sufficient overlap with any of the units, in which case exemption may be considered).

- Use of APL credit may affect your options when selecting a study pathway.

Many of our graduates have gone on to be leaders and managers within educational settings; while others started their educational careers in teaching, lecturing or administration. This degree will also prepare you for further study at Doctoral level (PhD or EdD).

The construction sector is a major part of the UK economy. It represents some 7% of GDP or £11bn per annum of expenditure - 40% of this being in the public sector, with central Government the industry's biggest consumer. Now any centrally procured project will require Building Information Modelling (BIM) compliance.

BIM is a process involving the structured sharing and coordination of digital and non-digital information about a building project throughout its entire lifecycle, from design through procurement and construction and beyond, into the operation and management stage, all the way through to demolishment. It involves the efficient coordination of processes, workflows, people, documentation, graphic/non-graphic assets and technology.

As a direct response to this industry need, we have developed this course which aims to produce practitioners with a qualification to be BIM enabled in their discipline with a critical awareness of contemporary BIM issues informed by technology, research and management skills in standard and unpredictable scenarios.
Importantly, the course provides practitioners in the property and construction sector, and related stakeholders providing services for it, with a qualification to be employed in a Management role in BIM projects. Entry Requirements

Falmouth University welcomes applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds, and encourages applications from prospective students who do not necessarily hold conventional higher education entry qualifications.*

This process is called Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL). Prior learning includes both formal or 'certified' learning (such as training courses not run by universities or colleges) and informal or 'experiential' learning (gained as a result of work experience or self-study).

The APL process lets you provide evidence of your formal learning, professional experience and self-directed study to enable the University to see if it can be recognised as appropriate preparation for entry to a course, or in some cases allow you to claim credits towards a specific qualification.

You'll need to complete an application, which is then assessed. Your application should demonstrate that you are able to study at the right level, and in the same subject area, for the course you have applied to.

In reviewing your application, we will try and assess whether your application is:

Authentic - does it reflect your own achievements and efforts?

What you'll do

- Study block 1
Study block one will take 30 weeks part-time to complete and consists of three modules: The Leasing and Asset Finance Industry; Leadership, Strategy and Innovation, and a work-based project including a two-day residential at Falmouth University, Penryn Campus, Cornwall. Each module will take approximately 200* hours to complete. The aims of the modules are:

- To develop a contemporary overview of the industry and obtain the key resources available to understand the industry
- To be critically aware of the drivers for change in the industry and the challenges and opportunities that the future affords the sector
- To explore innovation, strategy and leadership through case study analysis and in the current context of the industry
- To identify, plan and deliver a relevant research-led project relevant to your organisation

*This is the number of hours you will be expected to commit and includes the time you might need to complete your assessments, your self-organised learning, conducting online research, interaction with your fellow students online, the two-day residential and discussion with your academic supervisor/mentor.

- Study block 2
Study block two will take 30 weeks, part-time to complete and consists of a 200 hour* module on Creative Business, a 400-hour* work-based project including a two-day residential at Falmouth University, Penryn Campus, Cornwall. The aims of the modules are:

- To drive innovation in the sector through the ongoing development of your own creativity and supporting the creativity of others
- To identify, plan and deliver a relevant research-led project and communicate these creatively and effectively
- To produce and discuss conclusions through impactful communications, individually and as part of a group

*This is the number of hours you will be expected to commit and includes the time you might need to complete your assessments, your self-organised learning, conducting online research, interaction with your fellow students online, the two-day residential and discussion with your academic supervisor/mentor.

- Study block 3
Study block three will take 30 weeks part-time to complete and consists of a single 600-hour* work-based project including a two-day residential at Falmouth University, Penryn Campus, Cornwall.

MA Final Project:

This is a substantial piece of research and analysis which should draw upon the learning from previous study blocks. It is anticipated that the project will centre upon your own organisation and may address areas such as leadership challenges, innovation, organisational design issues and their impact on the industry. Your project can take the form of a dissertation, internal strategy document or consultancy project.

This block includes a two-day residential that provides an opportunity to share your knowledge and insights with fellow students, your academic supervisor and mentors from the Foundation.

This course is based on theories and techniques relating to the study of communication, the message and its channels; with a specific focus upon the behaviour and interactions of provider(s) and receiver(s). Its aim is to equip you with the requisite knowledge and skill sets to assess the credibility of content, its delivery and, where relevant, any potential deception and assessment of intentions, motivations and/or emotional states. The interdisciplinary programme will develop your research skills in Communication Behaviour and Credibility Analysis drawing on the core disciplines of Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology and Information and Communications. This includes the specialist areas of Forensic Linguistics, Criminology, Communication Theory and Digital Information.

Length

Students entering the MSc with 60 credits of accredited prior learning (APL) typically take 20 months to complete the programme of study. They commence their first year of studies in January and move into the second year in September.

Learning and teaching

- Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
You may also apply for APEL by submitting a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating that you have successfully achieved the learning outcomes for the specific unit(s) you seek exemption from.

We recommend you discuss this with the Director of Studies first to ensure this is suitable, as creating your portfolio can be very time consuming.

We will not permit exemptions of fractional units, and so the minimum threshold for the applications of APEL procedures will be a single, free standing unit (including three credit units). The maximum threshold for exemption will normally be 50% of the total credits required for a programme of study, for example, a 45-credit exemption towards a 90-credit Masters degree.

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

Examples include the Beijing Olympics, Commonwealth games, Paralympic World Cup and World University Games.

Each unit is individually assessed and may involve a mixture of written assignments, case studies, presentations and reflective discussion reports. There is a clinical exam during Phase 2, which takes place during the residential event at the University.

Here are the units you will study:

Accredited Prior Learning (APL): This allows you to receive credit for the qualifications you already have and for experience that has given you the learning equivalent to academic qualifications. This can include in-service training courses and qualifications, as well as learning from on-the-job experience. To claim credit for experiential learning you have to submit a portfolio of evidence matching your knowledge and skills to units in the University's Taught Units Database. The maximum APL credit you can receive is two thirds of the credit for the award. Prior Learning Portfolios should be submitted as soon as possible, to allow time for assessment before registration.

Learning Management: This is a credit-rated unit. It is the linking thread for your studies. In this unit, you will write a learning contract and amend it as necessary if circumstances change. You will work to the contract plan and deliver your evidence (reports, reviews or other items) on the dates you have specified.

Work-based Learning Projects: These usually make up the bulk of the learning contract. They must involve new learning for you, so they cannot be simply the activities involved in your regular job. However, they should be of value to your employer as well as yourself and you should be able to carry out much of the project work in normal working hours.

Taught Units: Units from the University of Portsmouth or other higher education institutions can be included in your programme. They are a good way of acquiring new knowledge in a structured way. They are delivered as part of the University's normal teaching provision and are not run by the Partnership Programme.

Programme Assessment

You will set your own learning objectives, course content and timetable. It is compulsory that some of your learning is via work-based learning projects while taught units and other training programmes provide additional and supported learning.

We set the framework for your degree and assess your work, but you choose what to learn, how you will learn and what evidence you will deliver for assessment. We ensure that you achieve the standard appropriate to your award through a process of learning management.

The Adult Nursing course has been developed to prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with adults with a variety of care needs across a range of dependencies, with a wide diversity of needs and in a varied range of care settings as well as their carers and supporters.

The Adult Nursing course provides students with the skills, knowledge and experience to care for adults across a range of health care settings. The course focuses on acute illness, older people and the care and management of patients with long term conditions. In addition, the delivery of public health interventions and the care of people at all stages of their life, including end of life care is explored across a range of modules and practice learning experiences.

Course structure

The framework for the MNurs Award has been specifically designed to permit Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as described by the NMC with a view to preparing students who are already graduates and/or who have relevant clinical experience for registration. APL / APEL will involve students making a written submission to detail how the requirements of the course have been met through prior study as well as providing evidence of relevant practice experience in a health care support worker role.

The course involves continuous assessment of both theory and practice. A variety of assessment methods are used including practical examinations, case studies, essays, written examinations and presentations. Students are also assessed against the NMC’s competencies for registration during a series of practice placements in hospital and the community.

The Nursing (Adult) MNurs course prepares successful students for a career as a registered nurse in the relevant field of practice. Newly qualified nurses can apply for posts within a hospital or community setting. This course may also enable individuals to develop a clinical research career within the NHS.

In line with the principles and values which underpin the NHS constitution, the University expects all students undertaking programmes which lead to registration as a health professional to demonstrate the NHS values.

Our Child Nursing course provides students with an opportunity to gain an Integrated MNurs/Registered Nurse qualification and acts as preparation both for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and for taking on the responsibilities and accountability involved. It aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. Practice experience is gained in both hospital and community settings. On successful completion of this course students will be able to enter Part one (Child) of the Register held by the NMC.

The Child Nursing course will prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with children, young people and their families with a variety of care needs in a range of settings from home to hospital. In addition, the development of the children’s nursing modules has been informed by key guidance and the contemporary issues challenging the profession and service, such as the recognition of the sick child, safeguarding of children, transition into adult care, involvement of children, young people and their parents in service development (RCPCH 2010), promotion of mental health and psychological wellbeing (DOH 2006), withholding and withdrawal of life sustaining treatment (RCPCH 2004) and standards for the development of “young people friendly” services (DOH 2011).

Continuing changes to children and young people’s health services require nurses who can adapt to new ways of working whilst being able to uphold and assure high quality nursing care for the children, young people and families in their care. A key aim, therefore, is to equip children’s nursing students to thrive in such changing environments and to understand the many factors that influence service provision.

Children’s nursing students are encouraged to be passionate, assertive and creative in working collaboratively with other professionals and families in the pursuit of excellent and innovative care for all children, young people and their families.

Our Mental Health Nursing course will prepare students to meet the needs of individuals in a variety of settings across a range of organisations. Students will be equipped with the fundamental skills and knowledge to meet the holistic needs of the client. The course will ensure that students appreciate the impact of mental health/emotional issues on the wellbeing of the individual, family or significant other.

Students will demonstrate and understand the need for the application of care, values and principles of mental health practice such as compassion, dignity, autonomy, personhood and empowerment. Students will develop the ability to critically analyse the evidence-base of mental health nursing practice and appreciate the value of practiced-based evidence through reflection on care.
