The MA in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice at Bath Spa University gives you an academic qualification alongside your vocational counselling training. This is beneficial when applying for work, (the qualification is nationally and internationally recognised) and will be helpful if formal registration is established in the UK. The award is modular, based on accumulating credit points (180 are needed for a Master’s), and gives a flexible career track suited to meet the demands of professional counsellors and therapists needing to study part-time.

This award is suitable for counsellors and psychotherapists who have completed a recognised counselling or psychotherapy training qualification, and who are working or who have worked professionally as a counsellor or psychotherapist. All the courses that are run in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice will give practising counsellors and psychotherapists an academic University based higher degree qualification to complement your professional qualification, and will enhance skills of evaluation, cognition and reflection, and increase personal knowledge.

Course structure and content

You can gain a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or Master’s Award (180 credits) all in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice to complement your professional qualification. Entrance to the Master’s award requires you to have gained 90 credits linked to Counselling and Psychotherapy, either through APL (accreditation for prior learning, granted within 6 years of gaining your counselling qualification) or through BSU modules (the work-based action enquiry and/or the Independent study and/or specific interest counselling and psychotherapy modules available from 2013) and then to undertake Research and the Professional Parts 1 & 2 and the Master’s Research Project.

The modules are completed through distance learning with individual contact made with a supervisor either through face to face tutorials, telephone supervision or on line supervision.

This module is for students to gain up to 60 credits and can be used by those outside the 6 years requirement for APL or those who need to make up APL. It can also be used as part of the Postgraduate Diploma qualification. An alternative to the Independent Study Module, it is specifically focussed on reflecting and writing about clinical theory linked with practice. It can include client work or supervised practice, or a review or conference report linked to clinical practice.

Counselling and Psychotherapy Independent Study IN7760
This module is for students to gain up to 60 credits and can be used by those outside the 6 years requirement for APL or those who need to make up APL. It can also be used as part of the Postgraduate Diploma qualification. This is usually a piece of work based either on a literature review or the theoretical aspects of a case study. Students are encouraged to choose a subject linked to their research interest.

MA Education:
The MA Education is our most popular degree and allows you the greatest flexibility in choice of units and dissertation topic (with the exception of those opting to take the International Baccalaureate Educator Certificates who are required to take specific units).

MA Education (International Education):
This pathway is designed for those who wish to develop knowledge and an understanding of issues relating to education beyond the national context. Depending upon your interests, you can focus on issues relating to educational practices in different national systems, on international schools and/or on other issues cutting across national contexts.

MA Education (Learning and Teaching):
If you wish to develop the practice and your understanding of Learning and Teaching then this is the pathway for you. Core units draw on theory of learning and teaching processes (with children and adults) and the role of technology.

MA Education (Educational Leadership and Management):
This pathway is designed to meet the needs of experienced educational professionals who wish to inform their work as leaders and managers, or who aspire to a leadership role, through an in-depth understanding of current educational management practice, theory, research and policy.

If you wish, you can complete the programme entirely though distance learning, however we recommend you try to attend at least one face-to-face unit as it is valuable to spent time in a study environment with tutors and other students.

Programme structure

For the 90 credits required for the MA Education, you acquire 60 credits through taught units and 30 credits by completing a dissertation. Typically, you complete five 12 credit taught units. One of the taught units must be the Research Methods in Education which is worth 12 credits, another of the taught units must be Understanding Learners and Learning or Education and Society (your choice may depend on which pathway you choose).

- Distance learning study commences at two fixed points in the year, 1st March and 1st September.
- Units taught at Summer School start in July
- Units are taught at Study Centres throughout the year.
- You can study units in any order, but you must complete each unit within six months.
- 175 study hours is expected for each unit.
- You can study up to two units at any one time and you have between two and five years to complete the programme.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed by assignment and dissertation. As you progress through the units and successfully pass the assignments, you will receive feedback and grades, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

Teaching methods at Summer Schools and Study Centres include; lectures, student-led seminars, workshops, group work, tutorials, Moodle (virtual learning environment), and other electronic communications.

If there are less than six students enrolled on a unit scheduled at Summer School, the unit will still run, but it may be taught on a Directed Tutorial basis. You will be provided with resources to help your study and individual or group tutorials will be timetabled in order to make sure your learning needs are fully met.

Distance Learning takes place online; enabling you to study independently with the support of a tutor. The Wiki environment offers you a number of alternatives for working flexibly with your learning materials. In addition, there are opportunities to link up with other students and leave feedback about your experience.

Methods of assessment

Assessment consists of a written 5000 word assignment for each unit of study, together with a 15,000 word Dissertation.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

If you have studied, but not completed or received an award, for postgraduate Masters level units in education from another institution, you may be eligible to transfer credit for this prior learning.

- Depending on the programme of study, you may transfer up to 40% of the total credits required for the MA/Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

- Credit must have been obtained recently (less than 8 years ago at the time of the award of the qualification to which it contributes).

- Claims for APL will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

- If you obtain APL you will still be required to study Research Methods in Education and either Education and Society or Understanding Learners and Learning (unless your previous study has sufficient overlap with any of the units, in which case exemption may be considered).

- Use of APL credit may affect your options when selecting a study pathway.

PMP Awards

Qualifications within the programme

The range of qualifications offered have different requirements in terms of the number of module credits involved:

Graduate Certificate (Grad Cert)
This involves the study and completion of 60 credits at Level 6 (Honours).

Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert)
This involves the study and completion of 60 credits, a maximum of 15 at Level 6 (Honours) and a minimum of 45 credits at Level 7 (Master’s).

Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip)
This involves the completion of 120 credits. At least 90 credits must be at Level 7 with a maximum of 30 at Level 6.

Master of Arts or Teaching (MA/MTeach)
The MA or MTeach qualification is gained through the completion of 180 credits that includes a final dissertation of 60 credits. The final stage 60 credits dissertation research project is 15,000-20,000 words or equivalent.

The period of registration for part-time students is usually a minimum of two (maximum of six) whereas full-time this is generally from one year up to two years maximum.

Elective and Core Modules within the programme

Flexible and Distance Learning Modules for General and some Specialist Awards:
For students working at a distance from the Bath Spa campuses we offer several flexible and distance learning low residency modules for a range of credits: 15, 30, 45, 60 at either level 6 or 7. Students registered onto each module are allocated a personal supervisor with an allocated number of support hours and can gain up to 90 credits following this pathway. The flexible modules offered:

Assessment methods

Assessment for most modules is based on completing assignments related to relevant professional learning tasks. An innovative range of assessment modes have been designed to reflect a diversity of professional needs and experience.

Valuing Previous Learning (APL)

Accreditation of Prior certificated Learning (APL) can be offered if you have successfully completed previous Level 6 or 7 modules at another university. We accept APL for our PGDip or Master’s qualifications. As a guide, up to a maximum of 90 credits may be credited towards a Master’s Degree and 75 credits towards a PGDip. We will require a full transcript from the awarding university.

It is also possible to gain accreditation for other kinds of professional development by compiling an independent study portfolio of professional development (APEL - Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning).

You will use your penetration testing and vulnerability assessment skills in finding weaknesses in existing devices and applications and to advise developers or network administrators to secure their application or environment. Your cyber forensics skills can be used to identify, collect, preserve and analyse a wide range of digital evidences and present them in the court of law. You will use your knowledge of programming to analyse different malwares to determine how they work and how countermeasures can be developed. Only a small percentage of cyber security professionals are capable of analysing advanced persistent threats and are capable of understanding and managing malware campaigns. PgDip in Adult Nursing

is an accelerated 2-year programme, which is supported by the NHS and designed in partnership with practice colleagues and service users to provide a high quality, flexible, student-centred and patient-focused educational experience. This will develop practitioners that are highly employable and recognised for the additional academic credibility they achieve.

We have one intake in September 2017, which build on the core values of the NHS constitution and fully prepares students for the challenges of modern nursing practice. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will gain both an academic award (PGdip) and eligibility to register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council as an adult nurse. Support is available from a range of sources to guide students’ academic and practice development throughout the programme.

This course is 50% theory and 50% clinical practice with placements in both the hospital and community settings. You will also have the opportunity to gain the added value of an additional award in acute illness management (AIMS©) at the end of the programme.
The Department of Health consultation for students starting in September 2017 has significantly changed the way healthcare courses will be funded. Health Education England have allocated a small number of capped funded places for new starters in 2017 for tuition fees and bursary. However, Manchester Metropolitan University has not been allocated any funding for PG Diplomas starting in September 2017, students will be required to pay their own tuition fees for this course.

Further Entry Requirements

All applicants will be required to submit a portfolio of evidence demonstrating a minimum of 450 hours of practical experience and a minimum of 450 hours of relevant academic study, via a portfolio of accredited prior learning (APL). This must be verified by a registered professional preferably a nurse. This APL forms part of the 4600 hours of theory and practice, which is required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to register as an adult nurse.

On receipt of UCAS application and prior to shortlisted candidates being invited for interview, candidates will be sent the portfolio and learning resources that help applicants work towards the required accreditation of prior learning (APL) for this accelerated programme.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the examinations, you will receive credit for the units, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

The majority of the content of the programme is delivered online to allow you to engage in flexible study alongside your clinical practice. To complement the online teaching there is a face-to-face induction event at the University and residential teaching weeks in the first and second years of the programme. Reflective, practice-based elements are provided through professional experiential learning and online virtual workshops.

Methods of assessment

You will be assessed through written assignments and case studies, a portfolio of clinical experience, the OSCE Examination and a Dissertation. Each unit is assessed individually.

Assignments are delivered online and must also be submitted online. The formative assessment includes moderated online discussions, self-assessment questions and online multiple choice tests.

- Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL):
If you have a previous qualification, or undertaken postgraduate units from another institution, you may be eligible to transfer credit for this prior learning.

Depending on the programme of study, you can gain APL for up to 50% of the total credits required (this credit must have been obtained within the previous five years).

- Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
You may also apply for APEL by submitting a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating that you have successfully achieved the learning outcomes for the specific unit(s) you seek exemption from.

We recommend you discuss this with the Director of Studies first to ensure this is suitable, as creating your portfolio can be very time consuming.

We will not permit exemptions of fractional units, and so the minimum threshold for the applications of APEL procedures will be a single, free standing unit (including three credit units). The maximum threshold for exemption will normally be 50% of the total credits required for a programme of study, for example, a 45-credit exemption towards a 90-credit Masters degree.

About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. Furthermore, there is a bridging spine between both pillars and which houses the Professional Doctorate in Health, Research in Health Practice and the administrative, finance, learning & teaching development, marketing and support activities of the Department.

Overview

Research in Health Practice is a modular postgraduate programme which has been designed to meet the professional needs of a range of health and social care practitioners who are interested in developing their skills as researchers in practice.

This flexible programme enables you to build knowledge and skills in designing and conducting programmes of research. Most appealing is the online aspect, meaning that you can remain within the practice area whilst gaining an all-important Masters level qualification (helping you progress to specialist practitioner or consultant level within the NHS).

The programme provides an innovative and integrated blend of knowledge-based, activity-based and experiential learning, underpinned by self-reflection and peer review. A virtual learning environment will form the focus for organising the learning, providing a platform for discussion and sharing of ideas.

By utilising web-based delivery blended with Summer Schools (typically five days in length), the programme aims to meet the learning needs of busy health and social care practitioners. Learning is supported throughout the programme by a Personal Development Adviser (PDA) who will utilise learning needs analysis and personal development planning techniques to provide motivation.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the examinations, you will receive credit for the units, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

The majority of the content of the programme is delivered online to allow you to engage in flexible study, alongside your clinical practice. To complement the online resources, there are face-to-face teaching events at various stages of the programme.

Methods of assessment

Assessment consists of a combination of written assignments, literature reviews, research protocols and reflective accounts.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL):
If you have studied, but not completed or received an award, for postgraduate units from another institution, you may be eligible to transfer credit for this prior learning.

Depending on the programme of study, you can gain APL for up to 50% of the total credits required (this credit must have been obtained within the previous five years).

This world-class course is for physiotherapists seeking a specialist qualification in sports physiotherapy, compliant with international standards of practice. You will develop a problem-solving and clinically reasoned approach to sports physiotherapy, athlete management and performance enhancement.

The blended learning environment combines distance learning with face-to-face teaching and clinical skills practice. You will experience an innovative blend of knowledge-based, activity-based and experiential learning.

The face-to-face induction event and residential teaching weeks in the first and second years of the programme will enable you to meet and work together with other students on real-work problems, and engage in debate with practitioners from a variety of contexts.

Learning and teaching

The majority of the content of the programme is delivered online to allow you to engage in flexible study alongside your clinical practice. To complement the online teaching there is a face-to-face induction event at the University and residential teaching weeks. Reflective, practice-based elements are provided through professional experiential learning and online virtual workshops.

Our Sports Physiotherapy teaching team have a wealth of professional experience, which has enabled them to develop a high level of expertise and work with an impressive range of clients. Our tutors have worked in the EIS, NHS and private practice in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA and the UK and at a wide range of events for different sporting disciplines. Examples include the Beijing Olympics, Commonwealth games, Paralympic World Cup and World University Games.

Methods of assessment

Each unit is individually assessed and may involve a mixture of written assignments, case studies, presentations and reflective discussion reports. Sports Physiotherapy in Practice 1 and 2 involve assessment of a portfolio of evidence relating to practice. There is a clinical exam during Phase 2, which takes place during the residential event at the University.

The MSc requires successful completion of an innovative research project and dissertation, including dissemination of findings to a target audience.

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.
