Programme structure

This is a flexible programme. The Diploma can be completed in two years, but students have the option of taking up to four years. The MSc can be completed in 3.5 years: again, students have the option of taking up to 5 years.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the examinations, you will receive credit for the units, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

The majority of the content of the programme is delivered online to allow you to engage in flexible study alongside your clinical practice. To complement the online teaching there is a face-to-face induction event at the University and residential teaching weeks in the first and second years of the programme. Reflective, practice-based elements are provided through professional experiential learning and online virtual workshops.

Methods of assessment

You will be assessed through written assignments and case studies, a portfolio of clinical experience, the OSCE Examination and a Dissertation. Each unit is assessed individually.

Assignments are delivered online and must also be submitted online. The formative assessment includes moderated online discussions, self-assessment questions and online multiple choice tests.

Summative assessment will vary between units but will typically include some of the following:

- Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL):
If you have a previous qualification, or undertaken postgraduate units from another institution, you may be eligible to transfer credit for this prior learning.

Depending on the programme of study, you can gain APL for up to 50% of the total credits required (this credit must have been obtained within the previous five years).

- Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
You may also apply for APEL by submitting a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating that you have successfully achieved the learning outcomes for the specific unit(s) you seek exemption from.

We recommend you discuss this with the Director of Studies first to ensure this is suitable, as creating your portfolio can be very time consuming.

We will not permit exemptions of fractional units, and so the minimum threshold for the applications of APEL procedures will be a single, free standing unit (including three credit units). The maximum threshold for exemption will normally be 50% of the total credits required for a programme of study, for example, a 45-credit exemption towards a 90-credit Masters degree.

About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. The minimum entry criteria for the PgCert/PgDip Stem Cell Biology are as follows:

(a) Applicants must hold a degree in a relevant life science discipline or another related discipline from a University in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, or from an institution which is recognised by the Senate for this purpose; or

(b) Candidates who do not meet the above requirements but who hold other qualifications and professional experience may be considered eligible for admission to the programme by accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL). Those candidates who wish to be considered in terms of experiential learning must complete an APEL form and send this with their application.

(c) Candidates will have to provide evidence of adequate English language skills. Overseas applicants may demonstrate competence through either a TOEFL score of 550 (or computer based), or an IELTS score 6.0.

Structure and Content

The PgCert course consists of two modules (60 credit points). The first module in Stem Cell Biology will equip you with up to date knowledge on various topics such as sources of stem cells e.g. adult, embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells, pluripotency, current and future uses of stem cells and bioethics. This module also introduces you to the skills which will enable you to evaluate future advances in stem cell research following the end of the course. The second module in Evidence Based Healthcare Practice will allow you to evaluate how stem cells are currently used and inform future practice in this area.
The PgDip course consists of a further 3 modules in Techniques in Stem Cell Biology, Commercialization of Stem Cells and Research Skills & Statistics (5 modules worth 120 credit points in total). These modules will equip you with the knowledge to design experiments involving stem cells and lead you through the commercialization process, topics which our Industrial Advisory Board recommend are highly sought after skills in stem cell industry employees.

Teaching Methods and Assessment

The course is delivered as a series of online lectures designed by a range of experts and multimedia resources in the various areas of stem cell biology. Modules are not specific to one phase of education, so they will be relevant to participants interested in school, college, university or training settings. Part-time attendance is possible, however modules will primarily run during the day. A teaching qualification is not necessary, nor is an intention to become a teacher. The programme will be appropriate for anyone with an interest in education and it could form the basis for a career in many education and training settings. The MA International Education will draw from the UK education system, but comparative aspects will be incorporated from a range international contexts.

COURSE STRUCTURE
The MA International Education includes four 30 credit modules and a 60 credit dissertation. Modules 1 and 2 will run consecutively from October to December (Stage 1). Modules 3 and 4 will run consecutively from January to March (Stage 2). The Dissertation module will be taught from April to June and the remaining time until September will be available for writing-up (Stage 3).

MODULES
Modules will be studied in sequence from October to June followed by a period for completion of the dissertation. A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used, but in common with our part-time programme extensive use of seminars is made in order for participants to share their learning and develop an understanding of different international contexts. Reading and writing tasks are set between the taught sessions and these are planned to enable participants to make progress towards completing the assignments. There will be some whole class and small group work together with one to one support and collaboration online using our virtual learning environment, Moodle.

We regard the development of transferrable skills as a very important aspect of work at Master’s level, indeed we are regularly praised by our external examiners for providing an excellent experience in this area. These transferrable skills include academic writing, presentation, critical reading, data analysis and evaluation, for example. We are also praised for the level of personal support provided by our staff, which often exceeds expectations.

Participants will be engaged in both theoretical and practical issues and be encouraged to incorporate original research into their work. Participants are also encouraged to identify and reflect on their own needs to achieve their academic goals.

ASSESSMENT
Assessment is by coursework only and participants need to demonstrate an ability to carry out in-depth critical analysis, effective research skills, critically evaluate research methodologies, have an enhanced knowledge and understanding of education and training in an international context and be able to critically evaluate their findings in relation to the academic literature.

This adult nursing course provides students with an opportunity to gain an Integrated MNurs/Registered Nurse qualification and acts as preparation both for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and for taking on the responsibilities and accountability involved.

Adult Nursing aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. Practice experience is gained in both hospital and community settings. On successful completion of this programme students will be able to enter Part one (Adult) of the Register held by the NMC.

The Adult Nursing course has been developed to prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with adults with a variety of care needs across a range of dependencies, with a wide diversity of needs and in a varied range of care settings as well as their carers and supporters.

The Adult Nursing course provides students with the skills, knowledge and experience to care for adults across a range of health care settings. The course focuses on acute illness, older people and the care and management of patients with long term conditions. In addition, the delivery of public health interventions and the care of people at all stages of their life, including end of life care is explored across a range of modules and practice learning experiences.

Course structure

The framework for the MNurs Award has been specifically designed to permit Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as described by the NMC with a view to preparing students who are already graduates and/or who have relevant clinical experience for registration. APL / APEL will involve students making a written submission to detail how the requirements of the course have been met through prior study as well as providing evidence of relevant practice experience in a health care support worker role.

The course involves continuous assessment of both theory and practice. A variety of assessment methods are used including practical examinations, case studies, essays, written examinations and presentations. Students are also assessed against the NMC’s competencies for registration during a series of practice placements in hospital and the community.

The Nursing (Adult) MNurs course prepares successful students for a career as a registered nurse in the relevant field of practice. Newly qualified nurses can apply for posts within a hospital or community setting. This course may also enable individuals to develop a clinical research career within the NHS.

In line with the principles and values which underpin the NHS constitution, the University expects all students undertaking programmes which lead to registration as a health professional to demonstrate the NHS values.

Continuing changes to children and young people’s health services require nurses who can adapt to new ways of working whilst being able to uphold and assure high quality nursing care for the children, young people and families in their care. A key aim, therefore, is to equip children’s nursing students to thrive in such changing environments and to understand the many factors that influence service provision.

Children’s nursing students are encouraged to be passionate, assertive and creative in working collaboratively with other professionals and families in the pursuit of excellent and innovative care for all children, young people and their families.

Students may be considered for APL/APEL on the basis of credit achieved in prior study; work based training, substantial employment or other experiential learning. This will be considered in accordance with the APL/APEL Handbook. Evaluation is delegated to the Faculty which is required to assess each application according to the specified procedure. The MA Board of Studies will ensure consistent application of the Handbook.

For the Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate awards a maximum of 75% of the total credits for the course may be set against accredited prior learning/experience.

The normal language requirement is Cambridge English and International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) examinations passed at WLTS 7 or other equivalent.

Overview

The course aims to deliver neuromuscular therapy education that will match and exceed the standards set worldwide. It will enable you to develop a competence and confidence in all aspects of professional practice, by encouraging autonomy and criticality in thinking and action.

Our MSc in Neuromuscular Therapy is a historical and unique development for the profession of bodywork and all involved in the study of myofascial trigger points and myofascial therapy work worldwide. The curriculum for the MSc was developed around three interconnected evidence-based themes of wholism, integration and functionalism embedded in an interprofessional learning environment.

During our programme, bodywork professionals will have the opportunity to develop the critical and practical skills necessary to design, conduct and critically appraise research in the field of neuromuscular therapy, specifically in the areas of myofascial trigger points and fascia.

Most modules are taught at the National Training Centre (NTC) in Dublin. The Human and Fascial Anatomy module is taught at King’s College, London, where you will complete human cadaver dissections as part of your studies.

With a tutoring team of highly qualified and respected bodywork experts, this programme will give participants a complete and fully rounded education.

Modules

The course has a focused emphasis on fascia, myofascial trigger points and chronic pain solutions using neuromuscular therapy. You will cover Human and Fascial Anatomy, including cadaver dissections, in addition to exploring medical exercise modalities through knowledge of:

- Myofascial Trigger Points, Sensitisation and Neuromuscular Pain
- Human and Fascial Anatomy
- Functional Nutritional Medicine
- Research Methods and Data Analysis
- Clinical Applications of Neuromuscular Techniques
- The Science of Medical Exercise
- Research Project

Assessment

Modules will be taught every eight weeks over three days to accommodate students who work full time. Learning will be achieved via:

- lectures
- practical sessions
- group workshops
- independent study.

You will be assessed via coursework assignment, e.g. 4,000 words, or equivalent, and by completion of a research project.

Careers

The MSc in Neuromuscular Therapy is an internationally accepted qualification, which will afford the successful graduate the ability to practice as an Neuromuscular Therapist in Ireland and many other European countries.

Entry requirements

Enrolment is available to applicants with a professional undergraduate degree qualification or equivalent. In addition, applicants are also expected to have practical skills and competencies in Bodywork Therapy and/or a related field of study. The normal university procedures of APL and APEL apply.
