Standard Track:

The course combines specialisation in one area (including Historical Musicology, Editorial Musicology, Composition, Solo Performance) with further training in up to three complimentary areas.

The range of choice on this course makes it one of the most flexible MA programmes in the UK. Students can make their education as broad or narrow as they wish. For those with a single-minded interest in one area specialised degrees are available.

The programme is divided into two parts: two semesters of taught study (Part I, 120 credits) and a substantial independent piece of work in the main area, produced over the summer (Part II, 60 credits).

Part 1 is centred on the Principal Subject module (WMM4044, 40 credits) in the student’s main area of interest. It lays the foundations of a Part 2 project in the same area. The following subjects are available:

WMP4052 Preparing for the Part 2 project (10 credits) acts as a bridge between Parts 1 and 2.

An additional 40 credits will be gained through submissions in other fields through either one Major Open Submission (WXM4046, 40 credits) or two Minor Open Submissions (WMP4047 and WMP4048, 20 credits each). Students can select from a number of subject areas, including, but not restricted to, those listed above. Additional offerings include modules in Arts Administration, Music in the Community, Ethnomusicology and Analysis.

Depending on the main area of specialism, students will attend a core module in musicology (WMP4041 Current Musicology, 30 credits) or composition (WMP4042 Contexts and Concepts in Composition, 30 credits). During these modules students will became familiar with up-to-date research and creative techniques and methodologies in the selected disciplines.

Subject-specific teaching is provided through a combination of individual tuition and seminar session in small groups. Within each of the chosen subject areas, students can identify their own projects, for which they will receive expert supervision.

Special Track:

The MA in Music (Special Track) allows students to specialise in any one of the following areas: Historical Musicology, Editorial Musicology, Celtic Traditional Music, Music in Wales, Studying Film Music.

All the training will be centred on the student’s main area, aided by a broader look at the methodological foundation of the discipline as a whole (through the core module in musicology).

The programme is divided into two parts: two semesters of taught study (Part 1, 120 credits) and a substantial independent piece of work in the main area, produced over the summer (Part 2, 60 credits).

Part 1 is centred on the Principal Subject module (WMM4045, 60 credits) in the student’s area of specialism. Another aspect of the same area will be explored in the Independent Special Study (WMP4049, 20 credits).

The SKE is a full time course designed for people who are about to start a secondary maths teacher training programme. It is fully funded and trainees receive a tax free bursary of £200 per week*. It is led by experienced, knowledgeable practitioners with school teaching experience, at a university renowned for being a friendly and professional learning community.

If you want to train as a secondary maths teacher, but your degree contains less than 50% mathematics, then you are likely to be eligible for the course. Typically a SKE student may have an A level in mathematics, and have studied a degree with some mathematical content, but an aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject is more important.

Course detail

The taught modules will cover all of the subject material that you are likely to teach up to GCSE, as well as areas from A level and beyond.

However, the aim of the course is to give you a much greater depth of understanding of the subject, being able to explain why as well as how techniques work, and an understanding of applications and the historical and cultural context of the subject.

The course is fully funded and there are no fees to pay. You will also receive a bursary, a total of £4,000 for the full course and £2,400 for the shorter version.

You cannot apply directly for the SKE course. Instead, you should apply through UCAS for a secondary maths teacher training course such as a traditional university based PGCE course or a School Direct course, indicating in your personal statement that you are interested in completing the SKE.

At interview an assessment is made of your subject knowledge. If appropriate, a conditional offer is made through UCAS where the condition is that you complete the SKE.

A place will automatically be reserved for you, and no further application is necessary.

Format

The course is full time, with taught face-to-face sessions taking place on Mondays to Thursdays and directed study tasks on Fridays.

The full course consists of 20 weeks of study beginning at the end of January, but there is an option to join the course for the last 13 weeks for students who already have stronger understanding of topics up to GCSE level.

The course dates are:

This course involves engagement with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of environmental regulation and occupational health.

The modules have been designed to enable development of the intellectual and analytical skills appropriate for health, safety and environment professionals in the 21st Century.

Modules address the exiting and emerging challenges and review contemporary management and regulatory systems designed to reduce risk.

Course Structure

For the first part of the course, you will learn primarily through a focus on problem-based learning supported by face-to-face teaching sessions and directed learning exercises provided through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle).

In this first part of the course (the PGDL stage) you will learn about how to study law and how to present legal argument, as well as the key substantive legal rules and principles relating to certain ‘foundation’ areas of law. For those who have enrolled for the LLM version of the course, the Masters stage of the course enables you to further develop your legal knowledge, research, presentation and analysis skills either in relation to a particular theoretical topic of interest to you or in the context of a practical placement.

Teaching sessions and directed learning exercises will be designed to help develop the skills and techniques needed to successfully complete the module assessments, and to forge a successful career in the legal sector. Engagement with teaching sessions and materials on the VLE is monitored by teaching staff to encourage engagement and provide a basis for individual and group feedback.

There are a range of assessments on the course, including oral assessment, written coursework, portfolios, employer assessment, reflective essays and more traditional exams. The range of assessments has been designed to ensure achievement of the course learning outcomes and the development of skills that we view as essential for a future successful career in practice or the further study of law, while retaining balance to ease assessment pressure points.

Based at Aberystwyth University’s internationally-renowned Department of Geography and Earth Sciences (DGES), this course will equip you with both subject-specific expertise and a broad base of professional skills which are transferrable into a wide range of employment contexts.

Course detail

The Master’s in Practising Human Geography will challenge you to personally engage with the theoretical and practical approaches to Human Geography. You will critically assess the way in which Human Geography has dealt with key themes including space, place, time, scale, mobility and power, and also the ethical, moral and legal perspectives on the subject. You will relate geographical concerns to ethical issues and relevant public policy debates, and argue your case with academic rigour. You will then prove this learning in your own practical research project.

Our excellent teaching staff will support and encourage you throughout your studies. The world-renowned Department of Geography and Earth Sciences (DGES) will expose you to the widest possible range of expertise, through its regular guest seminar series and a residential ‘theory school’, involving Cardiff and Swansea universities. Our lecturers are active researchers working at the cutting edge of their disciplines, and you will benefit from being taught the latest geographical theories and techniques. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (REF 2014) DGES retained its crown of the best Geography department in Wales, with 78% of the research being undertaken classified as either "world leading" or "internationally excellent”. DGES is also in the top ten of UK Geography departments with regard to research power, which provides a measure of the quality of research, as well as of the number of staff undertaking research within the department.

Format

The course is a year-long, full-time programme divided into two parts over three semesters. In part one, you will establish a breadth of necessary skills in a number of core modules whilst directing your own study by choosing specialist modules. In part two, you will apply your learning in the individual dissertation worth an additional 60 credits. Contact time is approximately 10 -14 HOURS per week and our small, friendly classes provide a productive environment where you can engage with your subject matter fully supported by staff and your peers.

Assessment

Part 1 of the course is delivered and assessed through lectures, tutorials and essay projects. In Part 2, the successful acceptance of your dissertation (up to 20,000 words) leads to the award of an MA.

Structure

Autumn Term

The first four weeks of the Autumn Term are usually College-based, although you may begin regular visits to your first teaching experience school from the fourth week onwards.

In College, you spend most of your time in a subject group with your subject tutor, who has overall responsibility for your professional development. These sessions introduce you to the basic principles and approaches to teaching and learning in your subject.

There is also a block lecture programme, General Professional Studies (GPS), which explores issues common to all teachers. Within GPS you have an opportunity to study an option in more depth.

From around the fifth or sixth week until the end of the term, you are based for four days a week in a school, working largely within your specialist subject department.

Your school-based tutor is responsible for a programme in school that enables you to relate what you have learned in College to the context of the particular school, and to gradually build up your confidence and expertise in teaching.

Throughout the term, you continue to come into College on Fridays to work with your subject tutor and group to reflect on your experience in school and develop particular areas of expertise.

Spring and Summer terms

The first two weeks of the Spring Term are usually based in College, where you build on the experiences of the Autumn Term to develop your expertise further so that you will be ready to undertake an extended block of teaching.

From around the third week of term until the spring half-term holiday, you spend four days a week in your second school, coming into College on Fridays to reflect on your experiences and develop your expertise with your subject tutor and fellow students. Between the spring and summer half-term holidays you are based full-time in the school.

In effect you work as a full member of a school team, with responsibility for all aspects of planning, teaching and assessing the learning of a number of classes. During this period, you have the opportunity to investigate in greater depth one of the areas introduced in the Autumn Term lecture programme, and to relate it to the specific context of the school in which you are based.

The three or four weeks at the end of the Summer Term are used flexibly for both school and College activities to ensure that all aspects of your professional development have been addressed.

The course

The course is designed to equip practitioners with the higher level skills and knowledge to apply recent developments in nutritional science, technology and legislation to support sustainable expansion and intensification of ruminant production systems and meet consumer demands for ruminant products both within the UK and globally. It is primarily aimed at UK graduates, veterinary surgeons and specialists within the animal feeds industry, but may also be of interest to overseas applicants.

Entry requirements

Candidates will be expected to have obtained a 2:1 honours degree in an appropriate agricultural, veterinary or scientific subject. Alternatively, candidates with a good UK-based HND or foundation degree in an appropriate agricultural or scientific subject, together with related industrial or professional experience of at least two years will be considered. For all candidates evidence of qualifications and experience will be required.

How will it benefit me?

Globally the demand for animal products is expected to increase by 85% by 2050 and this increase in demand can only be satisfied by increases in production efficiency and sustainable intensification of ruminant production systems. Within the UK, ruminant production systems are under increasing pressure to maintain profitability and improve product quality, whilst maintaining animal welfare and reducing any detrimental effects on the environment. As animal feed represents over 80% of the variable costs associated with production, an understanding of the science and technology associated with digestion, metabolism, growth and lactation will be essential in order to increase the efficiency and maintain the profitability of ruminant production systems in the future. These awards will provide a recognised higher education qualification for graduates intending intending to work in the ruminant sector, and contribute towards the continued professional development of veterinary surgeons and specialists already in full time employment.

There are many career opportunities for those with a post-graduate qualification in ruminant nutrition including teaching and research positions at academic institutions and advisory work as subject specialists in the animal production or animal feed industries.

Goldsmiths Art Department has the most accomplished and significant concentration of artist filmmakers of any Fine Art Programme in Europe. We also have a number of staff who publish theoretical and critical writings on film.

The College has a full compliment of technical resources: studios, editing suites, sound studios and film equipment, and first rate technical support.

Applicants should apply with a film or video or moving image project (as these are understood in a Fine Art context). The Programme will focus on the development of this project, together with an intensive critical studies course, technical skills training and a unique professional development programme. The purpose of the proposal at application stage is to ensure that the students are already capable of benefiting from a focused, practice-based and student-centred curriculum.

The Department intends to work with professional film and video organisations in London to provide a nuanced and integrated professional development component to the course. Students should expect to develop their professional skills, networks and opportunities while studying with us.

As a one year, professionally focused and practice based MA, this course is unique in the UK and Europe.

Assessment

Students will be assessed by project presentations leading to an end of year degree show, annotated research journals, essays and a dissertation.

Skills and Careers

The MA in Artists’ Film will primarily support students who want to make careers as artists working in film, video and moving image. This includes developing their practice to a level that will enable them to get both public and private funding for their work, as well as networks and support systems that will enable them to get their work produced and distributed. This course also has a strong academic component, which will provide students interested in pursuing a practiced based research project in film with excellent preparation for PhD, as well as for teaching in art and film programmes in the HE sector.

There will be many opportunities for students to improve their employability skills as artist filmmakers with individual mentoring from professionals in film and video organisations in London, master classes with established artist filmmakers, workshops by film curators, Arts Council England and other supporters of film, grant writing seminars and seminars on film finance.

This course will also provide transferable skills for those who might wish to go on make narrative films, commercial videos or adverts, get involved in the gaming industry, make documentary films, curate or write about film or become film producers. The transferable skills they will acquire on the course will give them a strong platform for developing their careers in any of these areas.

In order to manage the volume of international applications received by the University to allow the University to ensure each application is properly reviewed, considered and processed, applications from candidates must be received as follows:
-Applications from individuals resident in Mainland China must be received by 31 January.
-Applications from any other individuals who would be required to hold a visa in order to study in the UK, must be received by 30 June.
-Applications from those individuals who fall outside of either category specified above, must be received by 31 August.

Should you miss the deadlines specified above, then it may be possible for the University to add your application to a waiting list, which may be consulted in the event that following review and processing of all applications received prior to the deadlines, vacant places remain available on the programme.

The University is under no obligation to make any offer of a place on the programme to any applicant, nor is the University obligated to fill all spaces available on the programme. Consideration of any application received by the University after expiry of the deadlines specified herein, shall be made at the sole discretion of the University.

Masters in Management programmes are intended for graduates in any subject or discipline; no previous study in business or management is necessary. For example, in the past we have had graduates from a diverse range of degrees such as Music, Anthropology, Medicine and Geography. Business and Management undergraduate students may find some content overlaps with their first degree.
