Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program is designed to ensure that students not only advance their professional nursing credentials, but also develop knowledge and skills for effective management. The dual-degree program is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.

By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings, and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, students are often able to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study without compromising the professional standards of either program.

Successful completion of the dual-degree programs results in two degrees: a Master's in Public Administration (MPA) and a Master of Science (MS) in Nursing.

The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) housed in the College of Community and Public Affairs and Master of Science in Nursing (MS Nursing) housed in the Decker School of Nursing offer a dual MPA-MS Nursing degree program to provide students at Binghamton University with a unique opportunity. By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MS Nursing dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 48-credit hour MS Nursing program can be completed as part of a 68-credit hour program (rather than 90 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program takes advantage of the complementary foci of the two degree programs. Both programs have a clear commitment to preparing students to help their communities through advanced professional knowledge and skills. Accordingly, the dual degree emphasizes community health and professional management to prepare nurses to be effective administrators. The dual degree is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.
Students must apply and be admitted to both the MPA program and the MS Nursing program. These are separate applications and each requires an application fee to the Graduate School. Students who begin one program and then apply to the other program later will need to meet with the appropriate advisors for both programs to develop a customized program of study; completion within three years may not be possible for students who do not begin the programs in the same semester.

All applicants must submit the following:

- Transcripts from each college/university you have attended
- Two letters of recommendation
- Personal statement (2-3 pages) describing your reasons for pursuing graduate study, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee.

- Official GRE scores. GMAT scores may be submitted in lieu of GRE scores.

Letters of recommendation should be from individuals who know the applicant in a professional capacity, such as professors, work supervisors, and professionals from organizations where the applicant has served as a volunteer or in another capacity. When evaluating the letters of recommendation, the admissions committee looks for evidence of academic achievement, community involvement, and personal characteristics that suggests the applicant has the capacity to foster an institutional culture that advances democratic administration and governance.

- Personal statement
The personal statement should be no more than 500 words or two (2) double-spaced, typed pages and should answer the question,"Why do I want an MPA?" You may wish to describe your reasons for pursuing graduate studies in public administration, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee. In the personal statement, the committee assesses the student's commitment to public and/or nonprofit administration as well as his/her ability to communicate in writing.

- Significant work experience (5 or more years in the public and/or nonprofit sectors) can earn applicants a positive adjustment to their admissions scores. However, the lack of work experience does not result in a penalty.

MS Nursing:
- Undergraduate degree in nursing from a program which is accredited by a nursing accreditation organization
- Previous (successful completion of a) course in descriptive statistics
- A license to practice as a registered professional nurse
- Passing completion of the NCLEX examination (must be completed prior to the start of clinical courses)
- One year of full-time employment as a registered nurse is strongly encouraged (Candidates without one year of previous full-time employment may wish to consider enrolling in a part-time program while they acquire the needed work experience)

A first-year examination for which students must submit the following:

A student holding a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or a qualified senior during the last semester may apply for admission to graduate studies to work toward the non-thesis degree of Master of Engineering, majoring in his or her particular field of engineering.
The work in the major field will include one or two written reports (not necessarily involving results of research conducted by the candidate).

Degree Plan

The student’s graduate advisor, in consultation with the student, will develop the proposed degree plan. The degree plan must be completed and filed with the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies prior to the deadline imposed by the student’s college, and no later than 90 days prior to the date of the final oral examination. No exceptions are allowed.

This proposed degree plan should be submitted through the online Document Processing Submission System located at ogsdpss.tamu.edu.

Additional course work may be added to the approved degree plan by petition if it is deemed necessary by the graduate advisor to correct deficiencies in the student’s academic preparation. No further changes can be made to the degree plan once the student’s Request for Final Examination or Request for Exemption from Final Examination is approved.

Credit Requirement

A minimum of 30 semester credit hours of approved courses is required for the Master of Engineering degree.

Foreign Languages

No specific language requirement exists for the Master of Engineering degree.

Internship

The final examination is not to be administered until all other requirements for the degree, including any internship, have been substantially completed.

Time Limit

All degree requirements must be completed within a period of seven consecutive years for the degree to be granted. A course will be considered valid until seven years after the end of the semester in which it is taken. Graduate credit for course work that is more than seven calendar years old at the time of the final examination (oral or written) may not be used to satisfy degree requirements.

The MSc (by Research) admits any student with a Bachelors degree or higher in a science or social science subject, of the required standard, to study in science-facing aspects of Geography. This is a research degree, leading to presentation of a thesis and, if University conditions are met, graduation with an MSc degree. Full-time students must study for a minimum of one and maximum of two years to obtain this degree.

This, along with the Master of Arts (by research), provides experience of advanced research but without the commitment to a minimum of three years study required at the outset of a PhD. Because it is a 'science' degree, it is suitable for students with a science or engineering background, including physical geography.

Many of our students choose the MSc route as a means of helping them to decide if a PhD is for them or not. Others use the MSc as a means of gaining the further qualification necessary for progression in their career. Finally, some choose the MSc simply because they want to research something that has always interested them, aided and guided by experts in their chosen field of research. The emphasis is very much upon independent but supervised research. All students have at least two supervisors, who will guide students through to completion of a substantial piece of work which must be original, significant and contain publishable material. Along the way training in generic and subject-specific skills will be provided by the Department, Faculty and University, together with careful monitoring and assessment of progress.

The MSc Psychology (Conversion Degree) is an excellent fast-track route suitable for appropriately qualified individuals who do not have an undergraduate degree in psychology but who wish to study core areas of psychology and pursue a career in psychology. The programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as conferring eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). Sciences Po and LSE have come together to offer this distinctive dual degree devoted to urban management and policy, which combines the strengths of two leading international centres of research in city development and urban governance.

The double degree lasts two academic years: the first year is spent at Sciences Po, in the Master Stratégies Territoriales et Urbaines; the second year is spent at LSE, following one of three MSc programmes, in either Local Economic DevelopmentRegional and Urban Planning Studies, or Urbanisation and Development.

How you will be assessed

The taught modules are assessed by continuous assessment plus end of semester examinations in December and March/April. The project is assessed by dissertation.

Coursework is often very practical, eg writing computer programs, designing interfaces, writing reports, constructing web sites, testing software, implementing databases, analysing problems or presenting solutions to clients.

Curriculum

• Asia Pacific Studies Core and Elective Courses — 20 credits

MBA and MAPS courses are offered during the evening on a year-round basis. MBA courses are also offered during the day and in the summer. This schedule allows you the flexibility to pursue the concurrent degree while working or studying full-time.

Format

MAPS/ MBA students complete the MBA program in either a Full-Time MBA cohort or Part-Time MBA cohort. Eight MAPS units are applied to the MBA elective curriculum.

Duration

The MAPS/ MBA can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Students opting for the full time format can complete the program in as little as three years. If students opt to take the program on a part-time basis, then the duration will be extended.

Career and Networking Forum

Understanding the vital role of professional development, our program holds an annual Career and Networking Forum for students, alumni, and others in the USF community to engage with various organizations seeking interns and employees. At the most recent event, over 35 organizations — including businesses, non-profits, and recruiters with a connection to the Asia Pacific — attended and approximately 200 people participated. Representatives from The Asia Foundation, Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), Give2Asia, Pasona, and many others have enjoyed dynamic, productive interactions with students at the Forum.

Mentorship Program

The Mentor Program is a voluntary, non-credit option offered to students at any time during their two years of study. It presents students with a broad spectrum of possibilities as to how they might apply their degree to their chosen career field and connects students with professionals in their field of interest. The Mentor Program is coordinated by members of the Center for Asia Pacific Studies Executive Advisory Board.

Professional Development Program

The Professional Development Program (PDP) offers students opportunities to broaden their familiarity with potential career paths and to meet with successful professionals.

The PDP relies heavily on the expertise and voluntary services of working professionals. The majority of these professionals are members of the Center for Asia Pacific Studies Executive Advisory Board. The Board's Professional Development Committee advises the Center for Asia Pacific Studies on the administration and direction of the PDP.

Executive Networking Event

Periodically students in the program are invited to the Executive Networking Evening held on campus in collaboration with the Center for Asia Pacific Studies. Students have the opportunity to meet many of the Center for Asia Pacific Studies' Board members and other professionals in a range of fields.
