The biggest modern breakthrough for cancer treatment has been antibody therapies. An increasing number of biotechnology companies have antibody - or vaccine-based cancer therapies in development. This course aims to attract students interested in tumour immunology who wish to pursue a career either in industry (biotechnology) or academia.

The course covers both antibody and vaccine cancer therapies and explores the immunology of the tumour host interface. In addition, students will learn about intellectual property and how to exploit scientific research in scientific writings, patents and in development of business plans applicable to the biotechnology industry. To gain practical experience in research students will carry out a research project in the field of tumour immunology.

This programme offers a fascinating range of subjects, including molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, tissue engineering, clinical medicine, laboratory management and statistics.

It is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science and is based at one of the largest transfusion centres in the world, enabling visits to manufacturing, testing and tissue typing sections. You will learn from specialist lecturers based at the University, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), and NHS hospitals, and have an opportunity to become fully embedded in an NHS environment while you develop your knowledge.

The programme will give you extensive practical experience of transfusion and transplantation, allowing you to gain skills that directly relate to your future career. As well as being academically interesting, this continually developing area of healthcare science has a major impact on patients' quality of life.

The programme:
-Is one of just two specialist full-time courses in transfusion and transplantation, and is a recommended course at level seven in the Career Framework for Health.
-Gives you the opportunity to carry out your MSc project with NHSBT research staff within the transfusion centre.
-Has high contact hours, with teaching each day and practical classes.
-Includes a large skills component (eg writing in different formats, conference and publication skills, assignments with specific study aims).
-Includes laboratory management, a key skill required at level seven.

This course was designed to address the growing needs of the Biotech industry. The Biopharmaceuticals MSc course is an interdisciplinary course of study with the aim of developing medicines for the future. There are three strands to the course: the scientific basis of endodontology; diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with advanced endodontic problems, clinical treatment of patients with endodontic and other restorative problems, learning research methodology to enable completion of a research project. The Orthodontics MSc programme is based at King’s College London Dental Institute with clinical treatment clinics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which collectively with King’s College London form King’s Health Partners. Orthodontic trainees also rotate out to undertake patient treatment sessions at a number of peripheral hospital units within South East England.

The programme is based on the UK General Dental Council Orthodontic curriculum and is delivered through lectures, practical and technical teaching elements, clinical seminars, tutorials, self-directed learning, supervised clinical treatment of patients and attendance on diagnostic and multidisciplinary outpatient clinics.

Academic and clinical teaching is supported by a local virtual learning environment and also through access to the British Orthodontic Society national on-line learning programme. Assessment is through written, oral and practical examinations, clinical work-based assessments, case presentations, patient logbooks and the submission of a research dissertation.

Students undertake a dedicated research project as part of their course and the Dental Institute at King’s provides an environment enriched with internationally recognized academics to facilitate this. In recent years, students have undertaken projects incorporating many different subject areas including clinical orthodontics, craniofacial biology, dental materials science, clinical psychology and dental public health.

Students are encouraged to register and undertake a King’s Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice to further develop their educational skills. The programme complies with the principles of Erasmus and supports the European Union directives on specialisation in orthodontics.

Description

The programme aims to produce paediatric dentists who are thinkers. Proficient and confident in all areas of clinical Paediatric Dentistry, and capable of literature critique and in the conduct of scientific research. Our students will be able to use their skills and knowledge to set up paediatric dentistry services in both community and hospital settings. 

On completion of the programme the postgraduate should be able to demonstrate the following: 

  • Proficiency in the clinical skills required of a paediatric dentist
  • A knowledge and understanding of communication skills relevant to paediatric dentistry
  • Self-motivation and the capacity to learn and think critically and analytically
  • An ability to analyse and evaluate scientific evidence
  • A deep knowledge and understanding of paediatric dentistry
  • An understanding of a broad range of research methods
  • Skills to participate in dental research

This is a modern course that aims to facilitate reflective learning, clinical judgements, critical analysis, evidence based practice and excellent, empathetic clinical care. The didactic course is predominantly seminar based. A tutor will facilitate the seminars but these will be student led. This means that the students will be expected to present the topic and to critically appraise the literature in the subject area, and present this both in writing and verbally. This approach supports the development of inquisitive thinking, deep learning and helps develop judgement. 

There will be a programme of lectures in selected topics. 

Year 1 students will benefit from a programme of ‘core’ lectures and seminars where they will join postgraduate students from other disciplines. 

Year 2 students will have a lecture programme focused on the management of medically compromised children and the clinical aspects of dental anomalies. 

Clinical Skills 

Students will have an average of six clinical sessions each week throughout the two year programme. Three or four of these will be for personal patient treatment. The other sessions will include trauma clinics/A&E/multidisciplinary clinics, operative treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia,and weekly consultant clinics. 

Research Project 

Students are expected to undertake a research project. This can be laboratory or clinically based. The Dissertation accounts for 33.3% of the course, it is hoped that the projects will be presented at national and international conferences and be suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Through hands-on experience, you will acquire advanced competency in the full range of specialist periodontics clinical skills and complementary aspects of restorative dentistry.

Students will be exposed to research methods by seminars, extensive reviews of the classical and contemporary literature, critical appraisal of new scientific and clinical developments, and the completion of an in-depth literature review and a research project.

Our students have recently investigated smoking and periodontal health, periodontal microbiology and immunology, clinical trials of periodontal treatment and oral hygiene methods, behavioural factors in periodontology and periodontal relationships to systemic health.

You will achieve clinical proficiency in periodontics to a recognised UK specialist level and have the opportunity to sit a final conjoint membership examination with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

This course is available to study full-time over three years or over four years. The content is identical across both periods.

Course purpose

Designed to provide extensive contemporary knowledge and clinical proficiency in periodontology, qualified dentists train on this course to UK specialist level. The course has formal recognition for UK specialist training and offers greater depth of knowledge and clinical skills than is required for general practice.

Teaching

The usual training period will be a minimum of 4,500 hours across the degree.

The course content is apportioned approximately as:

  1. 60% clinical
  2. 25% academic
  3. 15% research

This time allocation is flexible and will depend upon the capacity of the trainees to complete the curriculum to a competent level.

Standard university term times do not apply to this course. You will receive a leave allowance for each academic year with full details provided on enrolment.

Assessment

Your three academic taught modules will be assessed by written exams. Your six clinical modules will be examined on case reports, with oral and clinical examinations, and clinical examinations on unseen patients. Your research module will be assessed by a project report and oral examination.
