The MRes in Biomedical Research: Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection is a 12 month postgraduate course providing exemplary academic and research training. The Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection stream is a specialised stream on a larger course (the MRes in Biomedical Research). This programme will provide research training in fundamental aspects of bacterial pathogenesis, host immunity and antibiotic resistance, with particular attention to the scientific, technical and professional acumen required to establish research independence. The emphasis will be on molecular approaches to understanding bacterial infection biology, as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology, as well as resistance to host defences and antibiotic therapy, and is comprised of two 20-week research projects embedded within research-intensive groups and a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials and technical workshops.

Based in the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection, the course provides an opportunity to learn directly from internationally-respected scientists through sustained interaction for the duration of the course. This programme will deliver training in: Molecular microbiology, including integration of molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of virulence; modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity; functionality and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors; mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and persistence; derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.

Course Objectives
The emphasis is on molecular approaches to understanding infection as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology. This research-oriented approach to training in biomedical science will comprise both theoretical and practical elements. The course will expose students to the latest developments in the field through two mini-research projects and a series of technical workshops. Students will gain experience in applying technologically advanced approaches to biomedical research questions.

Specifically the course will deliver research training in:

• Molecular bacteriology, integrating molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of microbial virulence.
• Modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity.
• By experimentation, understanding the biochemical functions and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors and antibiotic resistance.
• Derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.

Individuals who successfully complete the course will have developed the ability to:

• Demonstrate practical dexterity in the commonly employed and more advanced practical techniques of molecular and cellular microbiology
• Exercise theoretical and practical knowledge and competence required for employment in a variety of biomedical environments
• Identify appropriate methodology during experimental planning
• Interpret and present scientific data
• Interrogate relevant scientific literature and develop research plans
• Recognise the importance of justifying expenditure (cost and time) during experimental planning
• Recognise potential methodological failings and strategise accordingly
• Perform novel laboratory-based research, and exercise critical scientific thought in the interpretation of findings
• Write and defend research reports, which appraise the results of laboratory based scientific study
• Communicate effectively through writing, oral presentations and IT to facilitate further study or employment in molecular, cellular and physiological science
• Exercise a range of transferable skills

This will be achieved by providing:

• A course of lectures, seminars, tutorials and technical workshops. The programme is underpinned by the breadth and depth of scientific expertise in the participating department.
• Hands-on experience of a wide repertoire of scientific methods
• Two research projects
• Training in core transferable skills

The University of Birmingham runs the Physician Associate Masters programme as a top-up programme designed for students who have already graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Physician Assistant/Associate Studies from a UK or Irish university. This a distance learning programme so you can work professionally while studying for your Masters.

You will complete a research methods module (unless you have relevant previous research experience, in which you may be exempted) and then identify a research project in liaison with a Birmingham academic, probably from the core Physician Associate faculty.

Research Methods Module:

This distance learning module covers the techniques needed to critically appraise published research, and carry out a piece of original research. Topics include the scientific method applied to human services, literature search techniques, research design, sampling, the organisation of a research project, research ethics, measurement techniques, the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, the presentation of results, and dissemination.


Dissertation:

This module provides students with an opportunity to use the professional understanding they have developed through practice and through the taught component of the Physician Associate Programme as a foundation for planning and undertaking a major piece of scholarly work (usually but not exclusively a piece of research). The student is expected to demonstrate novel thinking in an area relevant to Physician Associate practice or to the development of the Physician Associate profession. Although academic supervision will be provided, the main impetus for the work and the critical thinking with regard to subject, approach and presentation must come from the student.

Harper Adams University has developed a Masters degree in Poultry Production.

The course

The poultry meat and egg sectors continue to show a consistent growth across all continents, with greater levels of expansion in developing regions of the world. Poultry meat production exceeded 100 milion tons in 2013 with broiler production accounting for all but 10 per cent of this production. With the anticipated expansion in world human population of 9.3 billion primarily in developing countries the demand four poultry meat is expected to continue into the future with India and China representing particularly large markets. Egg production is also expected to continue its expansion. Poultry is a major consumer of animal feed grain, with 40% of the total being used by poultry. There will be competing demands for this feed, which the poultry sector will need to respond to.

The UK poultry industry is characterised by a small number of large integrated companies a position increasingly mirrored on a global scale. Whilst there is a clear opportunity for growth there are a number of known challenges including feed price volatility in the short to medium term, the increased competition for raw materials in the longer term, poultry health, human health related issues (e.g. Campylobacter), concerns over antibiotic use.

The global poultry sector is particularly well placed to address the needs for increasing quantities of animal derived protein, this programme will provide the platform for students to address these and other emerging issues through focused and tailored assignments allowing students to plot their own pathway of learning.

The programme will serve to offer a portfolio of multidisciplinary topics within a selection of specialised integrative modules to advance students’ understanding of the relevant biosciences underpinning poultry farming. This will be presented within a theme of mono-gastric animal production where there are many similarities of principle and scientific approaches.

In summary the course:

Supports students to develop a level of understanding and knowledge that allows them to work as subject specialists and lead developments within poultry production systems.
Supports students to evaluate the wider consequences of animal production systems, mitigating any detrimental effects on animal welfare, food quality and the natural environment.
Supports students in their development of an advanced understanding of the biological factors that limit animal production and the scientific, technological, economic and social factors that influence animal production systems.

How will it benefit me?

Prepare students for a career in Poultry Production.
Offer vocational training in the area of applied Poultry Production.
Prepare students for PhD studies.

Modules are usually delivered as an intensive short course, taught over a one week block, with a maximum of 5 days per 15 credit module providing in the region of 35 hours of contact time.
Teaching may consist of formal lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical exercises, laboratory sessions, study visits or the use of guest speakers.
The PgC, PgD and MSc are offered full-time and part-time to allow those in work to study towards an award at a pace that suits their needs and time available.
The PgC is particularly well suited to those currently working in the sector as a means of initial training or CPD.

This programme is organised by Edinburgh Infectious Diseases (EID), which is hosted by the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and the College of Science and Engineering.

It provides an introduction to research methodology for biologists, medics and veterinarians. The training also provides an entry into PhD studies. Previous students have undertaken projects in the following areas:

antibiotic resistance and hospital-acquired infections
arthropod vector biology and vectorborne diseases
epidemiology and mathematical modelling of animal and human infections
functional genomics and bioinformatics
molecular diagnosis and point-of-care detection of infectious diseases
the immunology of bacterial and parasitic infections (including major tropical diseases such as malaria, lymphatic filariasis and river blindness)
the immunology of ruminant infections (for example Johne's Disease)
the pathogenesis of prion and viral diseases (animal and human, including herpes and HIV)

The learning process includes a one-year research project and during the study period students will be required to attend research seminars and lectures, including those on the related areas of immunology, microbiology and pathology. Training will also be given in generic skills including: statistics; project management and planning; oral and written presentational skills.

Depending on the project selected, students will learn how to apply modern molecular and biochemical techniques to the investigation of pathogenesis of infections, or the use of statistics and mathematical models to study the epidemiology of diseases.

This programme aims to give you a scientific understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of cancer, its epidemiology and pathology, and to place this in a clinical context. You will then address how this knowledge effects therapeutic approaches and disease management.

It aims to allow you to understand the research process by drawing on examples within the department and its associated clinical trials unit. A key part of this Masters programme is the planning, execution and reporting of a piece of independent study leading to submission of a dissertation.

At all levels we aim to encourage interactive rather than didactic learning and lecturing. Therefore, in addition to assembling and learning facts you will also to consider some of the philosophical challenges which underlie the treatment of cancer.

The programme is studied part time over 2 years and includes a taught element plus a work place based dissertation. This is made up of 4 residential taught modules per year (8 in total). Taught modules consist of one or two 5 day blocks Monday to Friday approximately 9am - 5.30pm. The total taught element consists of 45-55 days of attendance over the whole programme depending on your choice of optional modules.

You can opt for a Postgraduate Diploma on completion of the core modules and 40 credits of optional modules, or an MSc on successful completion of the taught programme and an independently researched dissertation.

This modular multidisciplinary programme in public health offers a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master in Public Health.

Designed to provide academic training to professionals currently working in, or who wish to work in, the public health field, students attend compulsory modules then choose from a wide range of approved modules. Students also have to attend a non assessed introductory week at the beginning of the course which provides an introduction to Public Health in particular in the context of health services in the UK (29 September 2014).

If you wish to study this programme to Postgraduate Diploma level then you will need to complete the taught elements of the programme but will not need to complete a dissertation.

This modular multidisciplinary programme in public health is designed to provide academic training to professionals currently working in, or who wish to work in, the public health field.

As well as practising clinicians, the course may be of considerable value for those involved (or thinking about becoming involved) in senior management in health services, as it covers most aspects of population health including epidemiology, statistics, health economics and health service management. Its modular nature allows the flexibility for participants to shape the programme to fit their needs in a way that ensures maximum utility with minimum disruption. Moreover, the course is delivered in an environment that combines the pragmatism and ‘can do’ spirit of a modern dynamic health service with the rigour, discipline, and high standards of a premier Russell Group University. The course covers many of the areas necessary for sitting the Part A examination of the Faculty of Public Health.

The MPH programme can be studied either full-time, part-time or over up to five years by flexible learning. Overseas students may only study the MPH full-time. Teaching takes place in one-week blocks.

Overview

This programme provides a first step in research training for health professionals currently working in clinical areas who want to develop a health related research component to their career. Guided by a supervision team you will undertake a research project and gain confidence in using research methods, project management, and research governance..

There is an opportunity to work alongside existing research staff on established research projects. In Nursing and Midwifery we are particularly interested in supporting applicants who wish to research palliative and end of life care across the life span, and in various healthcare settings.

Studying the Clinical Health Research (MRes) will give you research and project management skills that can be used in clinical research projects. You may be motivated to answer a clinical question, improve health, or be seeking to develop your research or academic career. The combination of flexible learning, taught modules and the research thesis makes this a flexible and stimulating programme which gives students skills, awareness and the intellectual discipline required to carry out rigorous, effective, patient centred research. The programme will provide you with support to acquire practical research skills, help you to develop your understanding of Good Clinical Practice in research, and to explore various research methodologies and methods.

We invite proposals for MPhil and PhD projects in biotechnology across the fields of medical sciences, biological, agricultural and environmental sciences, and marine science and technology.

We offer MPhil supervision in the following research areas:

Medical sciences

In medical sciences our research focuses on translational medicine, from drug discovery and development to effective product commercialisation and process optimisation. Our key areas are:
-The development of drugs for the treatment of cancer and psychiatric disorders
-Novel antibiotic innovation
-Design and development of integrated electrochemical and bio-microelectromechanical (bio-MEMS) sensors for application to point-of-care diagnosis of disease processes and sensor technologies for real-time, high content intracellular analysis using polymer-based nanosensor systems

Biological, agricultural and environmental sciences

In biological, agricultural and environmental sciences our research focuses on:
-The search and discovery of commercially significant natural products
-The production of crops with novel traits
-The fundamental role played by micro-organisms in the turnover of pollutants and the production of high value novel compounds, including pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Marine science and technology

Our work has led to pioneering advancements in developing novel antibiotics and omega-3 oils from plankton. We also explore the industrial applications of marine organisms such as the development of environmentally friendly antifouling coatings.

The principles and practices advocated for the effective prevention or minimisation of infectious diseases - in hospitals, laboratories, the general community and during outbreaks of disease - will be central issues in one of the major units of study.

The course will also provide training in various laboratory techniques used in the disciplines of infectious diseases and immunology, including culture and identification of infectious organisms, antibiotic sensitivity testing, serology, immunohistochemistry, cellular immunology and molecular microbiology.

Target group:
The course is designed for medical professionals who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases, infection control and the functioning of the immune system.
