The course provides training in public health nutrition in a global setting. An integrated programme covers epidemiological, dietary, public health, social and biological aspects of nutritional science. Specialist topics include: maternal and child nutrition; nutrition in emergencies; nutrition programme planning, evaluation and monitoring; nutrition-related chronic disease. The main programme focus is on nutritional problems in low and middle-income countries – although skills and learning outcomes are widely applicable to populations globally.

The course attracts graduates from many countries and various disciplines who wish to equip themselves for global health nutrition research and teaching, operational work in the field or community nutrition programmes, work in public health nutrition, including health promotion and nutrition education, and for policy and programme planning in nutrition.The MSc has been designed to focus on nutritional problems in low and middle income countries. This course is not a dietetic qualification.

Graduates work for local and national governments, NGOs, international agencies, academic institutions, and in fields ranging from food emergencies to research on nutrient-gene interactions.

Applicants who have worked in nutrition, health or other relevant global nutrition activities will be given preference.

Any student who does not meet the minimum entry requirement above but who has relevant professional experience may still be eligible for admission. Qualifications and experience will be assessed from the application.

Objectives

By the end of this course students should be able to:

- demonstrate an advanced knowledge of nutrition for global health at biological, social and policy levels

- assess critically, select and apply a range of appropriate research skills and techniques, from anthropometry and information on dietary intake to broader analytical skills

- interpret and synthesise different types of data used to analyse and assess nutritional problems at population and population sub-group levels

- evaluate critically the findings of scientific studies of public health nutrition

- disseminate and present findings of research in a range of formats and contexts

- identify and formulate appropriate responses and intervention strategies to address nutritional issues, taking into account the public health and social policy contexts

- apply knowledge of effective teamwork and communication skills to solve problems and achieve goals

Structure

Term 1:

All students take three compulsory modules:

- Fundamental Public Health Nutrition

- Statistics for Epidemiology and Population Health

- Basic Epidemiology

One additional optional module may also be taken from:

- Principles of Social Research

- Health Promotion Theory

- Health Policy, Process and Power

Project Report

During the summer months (July - August), students complete research project which enables them to work on a subject of special interest, practice skills of analysis and presentation, and integrate different aspects of the year's work, for submission by early September.

Combine your knowledge of sport and exercise theories, research methods, physiology and psychology with a range of opportunities for practical applications in this hands-on course. Applied Sport and Exercise Science at Winchester is designed to provide strong links between the theoretical and the practical aspects of sport and exercise, developing your skills and experience through study and real-life projects. You complete the course equipped for a range of careers in the industry of sport and exercise support. 

The programme is a blend of sport and exercise physiology, psychology, and biomechanics, through which you increase your understanding and application of research methods. You have multiple opportunities for additional professional development with the BASES Supervised Experience programme, ISAK anthropometry training and research and consultancy opportunities with sports teams, all of which are excellent preparation for employment. 

Tackle modules including Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise, Sport and Exercise Industry Skills, and Advanced Laboratory Techniques in Exercise and Health. There are a mixture of teaching methods: lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies, practical sessions, tutorials, e-learning and individual project supervision. You complete written assignments, presentations, portfolios (which usually include evidence that you have acquired specific skills and critically reflecting on your personal development), projects; exams and research proposals. You also complete an independent research project. 

Graduates of Applied Sport and Exercise Science work in sport and/or exercise science support or performance sport support. Others have careers in teaching, leisure, education, research and/or health.

Pre-approved for a Masters

If you study a Bachelor Honours degrees with us, you will be pre-approved to start a Masters degree at Winchester. To be eligible, you will need to apply by the end of March in the final year of your degree and meet the entry requirements of your chosen Masters degree.

Our validated courses may adopt a range of means of assessing your learning. An indicative, and not necessarily comprehensive, list of assessment types you might encounter includes essays, portfolios, supervised independent work, presentations, written exams, or practical performances.

A wide variety of assessment types are used. These include written assignments (including essays and case studies); presentations (including oral and poster presentations); portfolios (a flexible combination of assessment types which usually include providing evidence of acquired skills/competencies and critical reflection on personal development); projects; examinations and research proposals. Students also complete a substantial independent research project.

This high demand has partly been driven by employers seeking nutritionists who work within sport to have a higher specialist degree, the continued professional development requirements from professional bodies and be on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).

The MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition is achieved through the completion of 180 credits: 120 from the taught modules as below and a further 60 credits for the dissertation.

The programme ensures that students will be enabled to gain professional skills related to both interpersonal communication, rapport development and working in a one to one consultancy situation as well as working with groups, teams and coaches. The programme also incorporates the application of knowledge specifically related to practical situations. Individuals can study on either a full-time or part-time basis.

This award has been designed to facilitate the learning of the generic skills and knowledge essential to successful higher clinical practice and careers in academic medicine by applying the principles of the scientific method to studies in both anatomical research and clinically-applied anatomy. Anatomy encompasses all levels of structural organisation, topographical, neuroanatomical, histological, cellular and developmental, as well as providing a basis for studies in radiological imaging and pathology. This approach allows students to integrate recent advances in molecular genetics, cell biology, microscopy, imaging and computer simulation to biological and clinical problems concerning the human body.

Course Content

A total of 180 credits are required to achieve the MMedSci (Anatomical Sciences) Intercalated.

One third of the credits are associated with the major dissertation/project, one third are anatomy-related taught modules with practical content, and one third comprises a combination of core generic methodology modules and a choice of modules in areas of cell and molecular biology or applied clinical science.

COURSE MODULES

FOUR CORE modules which are compulsory:

Applied Morphological Techniques and Imaging (30 credits):

This module, taken early in the semester, introduces some of the key research techniques employed in anatomical, experimental and pathological investigations, including whole body methods, optical, confocal and electron microscopy, histochemical and immunocytochemical staining methods, and quantitative techniques such as morphometry and stereology. In general, half-day theory sessions are followed by practicals and visits to various research and pathology laboratories and seminars involve critical analysis of the literature and applications to project design and research grant funding.

Applied Clinical Anatomy 1 (15 credits):

A six-day module spread over semester 1, covering practical, theoretical and applied aspects of the anatomy and development of the muscular, nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The unit includes anatomy prosection practicals, anthropometry, ultrasound imaging and critical analysis of the research literature particularly in the field of neuromuscular anatomy, variations, anomalies, and applied anatomy.

Applied Surgical Anatomy (15 credits):

This module, spread over both semesters, provides students with the opportunity to acquire a thorough knowledge of anatomy as applied to surgical diagnoses and procedures as a foundation for understanding and developing the scientific and evidence base of current practice. Activities include anatomy dissection labs, small group work and presentations, case-based discussions and critical appraisal work on the anatomical and surgical literature and self-directed learning.

Research Methods in Health (15 credits):

The aims of this module are as follows:

• To develop the students’ understanding of the philosophical and methodological bases of health and social research
• To enable the student to make an informed and appropriate choice of research design and methods
• To equip the student with critical appraisal skills
• To provide the student with the methodological foundation for a research dissertation

THREE OPTIONAL modules, ideally ONE from each of groups A, B, and C by discussion with the course tutors:

Group A

• Statistics and Epidemiology (15 credits)
• Medical Education 15 credits)

Group B

• Stem Cells: Types, Diagnoses and Applications (15 credits)
• Cell & Tissue Engineering (15 credits)

Group C

• Physiology of Neuromusculoskeletal Tissue (15 credits)
• Psychosocial Aspects of Pain (15 credits)
• Concepts of Neurological Rehabilitation (15 credits)
• Physiology and Pharmacology of Pain (15 credits)
• Assistive Technologies in Neuromuscular Rehabilitation (15 credits)
• Dynamic Ultrasound Imaging (15 credits)

Dissertation/Project:
This may take the form of one long (9 month) dissection or laboratory-based research topic written up to include a literature review, methodologies, results and discussion. Alternatively, this could comprise a short dissection or laboratory research project and a related medical education research project written up as above. Some short exploratory anatomy lab research projects may be undertaken in the style of Applied Clinical Anatomy 2.

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme.
