Course detail

The course is based at Bower Ashton Campus, part of City Campus, where exceptional facilities and resources include state-of-the-art digital media, production and fabrication workshops offer a combination of traditional tools and the latest technology.
Based in Bristol, a global centre of excellence in animation, film and television production, it attracts students from around the world. Bristol is the place to study animation, home to Aardman Animations, A Productions, Arthur Cox and other internationally renowned animation companies.

Structure

The full Master's course comprises of 180 credits divided into three 60 credits stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Masters. Students work incrementally through the three stages and must pass all modules at each stage in order to progress to the next.

Format

The course is taught via practical workshops, a rolling programme of guest lecturers and industry speakers and there are opportunities for work experience within the industry.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of practical work, presentations and written assignments.

This postgraduate course will allow you to return to industry with enhanced skills and further experience or start afresh in the diverse field of animation. The course content and structure enables you to pursue your interests and specialisms whether in 2D/drawn, CG, stop motion or other forms of animation in a range of roles including direction, production, storyboarding, model-making, layout, design and teaching.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This is the only UK based model making course located in a dedicated film studio environment. We intend to take advantage of that.

We will be creating professional models, sets, props and puppets. Successful candidates will work individually, and as part of a team within a course comprising tutorials and challenging modules, which will culminate in building models and sets on the current grad animation films.

You will be encouraged to research, sample, test, and mix traditional and new techniques throughout the course and will use a vast array of materials to successfully realise the brief. This will be as “real world” as it can be.

Taught Modules:

Java programming: This module provides students with an in-depth understanding of current and emerging Java programming concepts and programming variations. The module teaches the basic and advanced structures of Java and makes use of the object-oriented approach to software implementation. It also gives an in-depth understanding of advanced Java concepts in the area of user interfaces and will enable students to apply the theoretical knowledge of the Java language onto a test-case software development scenario.

Introduction to distributed systems: This module will introduce key ideas in distributed Systems and its role and application in operating systems and middleware. On completion of this module students will have an understanding of the key issues for distributed systems at OS level or as middleware, they will understand core concepts of concurrency, be able to program multithreaded and distributed applications and understand the issues and use of algorithms for transactional systems.

Data networks and communications: This module will provide an in-depth understanding of how real communication networks are structured and the protocols that make them work. It will give the students an ability to understand in detail the process required to provide an end-to-end connection.

Technologies for Internet Systems: In this module, students will be introduced to state of the art technologies and tools for Internet Systems and in particular e-commerce systems.

Agent Technologies: This module provides an in-depth understanding of technologies from Artificial Intelligence research such as machine learning, data mining, information retrieval, natural language processing, and evolutionary programming. It will look at the application of agent-oriented technologies for Artificial Life, for building Web search engines, for use in computer games and in film (such as the MASSIVE software developed for the Lord of the Rings movies), and for robotics. It will also provide an introduction to agent-oriented programming using the NetLogo programming language.

Foundations of computer graphics: This module will teach techniques, algorithms and representations for modelling computer graphics and enable students to code 2D and 3D objects and animations.

Database systems: Students completing this module will gain an in depth understanding of DBMS/Distributed DBMS architecture, functionality, recovery and data storage techniques. Students will also have a full understanding of how queries are processed and the importance of database maintenance. This module is designed to enable students to perform research into one or two areas of databases; for example, object oriented databases and deductive databases.

Project foundations and management tools: This module prepares students for their MSc research project, including reference search and survey preparation and familiarisation with project management tools.

MSc Research project: After the successful completion of the taught component of the MSc programme, students will spend the remainder of the time undertaking a research project and producing an MSc Dissertation. During this process, students will conduct project work at state-of-the-art research level and to present this work as a written dissertation. The programme has been developed by academics within the Department of Earth Sciences at Royal Holloway using the material and experience from the campus-based Petroleum Geoscience MSc course that has been running since 1985. Your time commitment

This course is offered online with each module running with tutor support for a three month period during the academic year, and available the rest of the time for preview and revision. We focus on applying the latest technology and management systems to analyse current engineering issues. Course benefits

You will be taught by a team of experts who are research active and have published books and written many papers in the field of engineering. Professor Reinhold Behringer has worked at the Rockwell scientific Institute in Southern California on the SciAutonics Project which produces Autonomous Robots.

The first semester concentrates on process control and the second concentrates on new product development. Successful completion of semester one provides a postgraduate certificate; semester two a postgraduate diploma; and on completion of the semester three project you will gain a masters qualification.

This course will enable students with some experience of 3D computer graphics to develop and enhance their abilities in the skills required by the computer animation and visual effects industries. It is one of a suite of digital media courses that enable you to study professional digital media practice in a studio environment and work as part of an interdisciplinary team with students from across the full programme. Through a student-centred project-based curriculum, you work to develop specialist skills such as character animation, character rigging, effects animation, modelling, texturing and lighting.

Key features
-This course has been developed in consultation with our industry panel, which includes representatives from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, DreamWorks and Samsung Design Europe. We are also an active member of TIGA, the games industry's representative body, and the British Interactive Media Association (BIMA).
-The courses have a project-based curriculum where collaborative interdisciplinary teamwork is encouraged.
-The industry-focused learning experience enables you to hone your specialist skills in a professional context. Work placements, real projects, internships and an industry mentoring scheme will also prepare you for entry into the fast-growing and highly competitive digital media arena.

What will you study?

You will learn clean modelling techniques, principles of animation, lighting, shading, texturing, rendering and compositing. You will create computer animation assets, both alone and in teams, using industry-standard production techniques that stimulate a professional environment of collaboration to deliver a product on time. You will also work as part of a team comprising students from different media disciplines, undertaking projects that have previously included use of brain–computer interface systems, computer vision and optical stereoscopic 3D, and you will learn how to present yourself to potential employers through your professional presence and portfolio.

Development of a portfolio of computer graphic work (including 3D assets, textures and animations), presentations, essays.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.
-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Working as a Graphics and Titles Designer in Film and Television involves design and production of graphics elements for TV channels, series, individual programmes, films and promotions. At its most complex this could be supervising the shoot of multi pass animations using a motion control studio or on location. Most of the work, however is producing and implementing templates for use in studios and post production suites to enhance the look of the output and to reinforce and support broadcaster, channel, genre and programme branding.

Graphics and Titles professionals design and implement moving and stationary graphics used for branding and presentation of information. On some high end shows they operate the graphics generator in the studio gallery but, in most instances, they create templates for use by graphics operators, editors and vision mixers.

To do this role, you will need to:
-Be an exceptional graphic designer with the ability to realise 2D and 3D designs through a variety of computer software packages

The Army Learning Support Centre (ALSC) integrates industry standard technologies to develop advanced training for the military. The ALSC designs and develops distance learning, 3D models, gaming applications, animations, graphic print media, videos and photography to help modernize army training.

The facilities are among the best in the country to include state-of-the-art technology and equipment; 3D print capability, Oculus technology, motion chairs and motion capture systems.

You will work daily in a production environment that uses the same software, processes and techniques that industry studios employ. You will work in a team environment as a contributing member to the success of ALSC projects and the opportunity to learn new skills while in the program.

This is an intensive, vocational course with strong professional links to the industry, offering a maximum of four students, with high levels of painting and drawing skills, the opportunity to develop their careers as scenic artists. The skills and techniques acquired on this course are to the level necessary for theatre, television, film and animation industries..

During the year students acquire an understanding of professional practice and standards, and gain in-depth skills and experience in scenic art techniques and their application, combined with the practice of managing a scenic art department.

The Course has 3 very intensive terms during which students paint the sets for the School’s six main house public productions, offering them the opportunity to see their finished work used on stage in a wide range of public performances and venues. Teaching is led by the School’s Head of Scenic Art in collaboration with visiting industry professionals who provide master-classes in a range of skills and techniques that include; life drawing, portraiture, perspective, marbling, wood-graining, polystyrene carving and painting for animation. The scenic art students work collaboratively with the School’s other production departments, and most especially with design students. Furthering their introduction to the industry, work placements with principal companies are arranged during the course; particular attention is placed on students developing their own professional portfolio. Upon graduation students will showcase their work in a public exhibition and be interviewed by some of the UK’s leading industry practitioners. In a freelance industry most of our graduates begin working as assistants for scenic artists, scenic workshops and large theatre companies, eventually becoming supervising scenic artists themselves.
