In the Master’s in European Politics and External Relations, you will analyse politics and power in Europe. The programme focuses on the challenges of Europe as a part of an increasingly interdependent, globalised and multi-polar world. You will be given the analytical, theoretical and empirical tools to develop a deeper understanding of the EU’s role as an international actor. You will also gain knowledge on both internal and external dimensions of EU policies such as for example the economic crisis, challenges surrounding security, the environment, the refugee crisis, the rise of populism, trade as well as the EU’s role in its immediate neighbourhood and the world and many more topics. Our teaching is research-led and our programme offers access to seminars and debates of the research community of ACCESS Europe. During past years, European Politics and External Relations track students were given the opportunity to attend a study trip to Brussels, which included meetings and discussions in key EU institutions.

The European Politics and External Relations programme provides students with a thorough understanding of the politics and power of Europe in an increasingly diverse, interdependent, and multi-polar world. It offers in-depth study of the internal and external dimensions of European politics and their interrelations. Internally, it takes a historically grounded approach to processes of European integration, democracy and citizenship. Externally, it focuses on understanding and analysing the power of Europe in a changing global environment, for example in relation to borders, security, conflicts, trade, finance and environmental governance.

  • Do you wonder how the EU relates to other global players? How it acts upon Russian involvement in the Ukrainian crisis, deals with transatlantic relations in post-Snowden times, or engages with political transformations in the Middle East and North Africa?
  • Are you interested in how the economic crisis in the eurozone affects the European Union’s internal governance and its position in the world? What does deeper integration within the eurozone mean for national democracy, the risks of Brexit and relations with major trading partners like the US and China?
  • Do you want to know how old and new security threats (like migration, global warming, energy dependency, new wars) challenge, unite and divide EU member states? Would you like to understand how the EU responds to social and political instability in its own direct neighbourhood? 

Student profile

You have a fascination for European politics in a global context in all its facets. This fascination extends to the current political developments of the EU, as well as the state-of-the-art of theorizing EU power and politics. The programme is intensive and rigorous. You are expected to develop a capacity to work independently and in group settings. Most teaching is in small seminars (max 25 students) in which you are expected to contribute actively, and in which your skills of analysis, presentation, teamwork and critical questioning are developed. How do global economic and political forces shape the lives and future of citizens, business, and civil society? Of political conflict and government? Your Master programme in Political Economy will teach you to answer these questions. The programme covers the ground from ‘economics for non-economists’ to understanding how the ‘rules of the game’ are shaped, to thinking about ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ of an open global economy and how that gives rise to ‘new’ conflicts and to a surge of anti-globalisation political movements. You will in global and comparative terms address the critical issues facing the developed and developing worlds, from Asia to Europe to the Americas - contemporary challenges such as migration, the struggle for development, or better financial market governance.

Our starting point is that the relationship between ‘politics’ and ‘the economy’ is a two-way street: political contestation shapes economic outcomes and their governance, while economic developments generate political conflicts. The causes and consequences of the on-going economic malaise have brought this highly political ‘who-gets-what’ nature of ‘the economy’ back out into the open. We also confront the social dimension of key political challenges by exploring issues such as social inequalities and corporate power so as better to understand how this plays out in different party political or non-democratic environments. These dynamics cut across a rich terrain of contemporary issues and taps into your interest in both the practical and the ‘big issue’ side of global affairs, crossing over with public policy expertise and business strategy, among which:

  • Powerful emerging economies in Africa and Asia are ‘on the move’, business lobbies push their preferences, and the success of the developing world is a growing challenge to the dominance of the advanced economies in global and regional governance.
  • Technological change and the Internet revolution are transforming the corporate sector, labour markets, and government. New patterns of mass-elite communication and social movement mobilisation are emerging. The world is a shrinking but more politically contentious place than previously thought.
  • Citizens feel vulnerable in the face of cross-border trade, investment, financial markets, and labour market risks. Fearing immigration, rising inequalities, and a changing welfare state, many opt for more ‘populist’ political movements of the radical left or right. 

Our programme also teaches you that the dynamics of change differ starkly across countries: the hopes of a precarious development process poses challenges to authoritarianism in the developing world, while declining trust in business and political elites undermines ‘mainstream’ politics in established democracies.

This track is above all a response to vocal demand from students. It draws on a long political economy tradition at the UvA that is second-to-none in Europe. Those of you with a public policy, comparative politics or international relations background often seek to specialise in the economic policy domain yet outside the confines – often ideologically and methodologically constraining – of traditional approaches in economics and business departments. Many who have taken economics, business, or law seek the way our programme ‘brings politics back in’. The aim of this course is to give you, as an occupational therapist, the tools to get ahead of current developments and meet the demands of today's clients. With an increase in the average age, the number of people who have disabilities and those with chronic conditions, there is a need for highly qualified occupational therapists who are equipped to innovatively deal with complex situations in therapy and health promotion. On completion you will be able to offer a high quality service geared to individual needs.

Studying across different European countries will allow you explore the development of occupational therapy theories by looking at the similarities and differences between cultures. Course structure

Each module consists of 280 study hours and has three phases at one of the participating universities.

Each phase consists of preparatory work in your own country (56 hours), class work in the country hosting the module (10 working days / 80 hours), and independent study in your own country (200 hours).

In your home country you work under supervision on your thesis. You support and review each other's work in action learning groups at a distance (840 hours).

During the first year you will have four modules, in each module you have two weeks of intensive classes and nine weeks for making assignments.

It is possible to take these first modules separately, in which case each module costs 2,000 Euros.

Each module combines theoretical topics within Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science with scientific method and theory.

Employability

Graduates of this programme are working in education, practice and research. Around half of all alumni state that after finishing this MSc they have had an increase in their income, job satisfaction and responsibilities. Nearly all graduates would recommend this MSc to others. 

Graduate destinations:

  • Approximately 25% of graduates were already or have became teachers in bachelor programmes in their home country.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF THE LOW COUNTRIES

Our two-year Research Master's programme focuses on the art and architecture of the Low Countries (present-day Netherlands and Belgium), and spans the period from the late Middle Ages to the present day. You will study Netherlandish art and architecture, taking into account their international context. We invite you to critically reflect on the production of art and architecture, and the role of patronage; investigate the reasons why so many artist went abroad and how they became agents in the international diffusion of styles and themes; and explore how artworks testify to the Dutch encounter with the wider world from the Golden Age to the present day. Furthermore, the programme will acquaint you with the innovative approaches of global, technical, and digital art history. In the end, we hope you will imagine new possibilities for the field of art history of the Low Countries.

You will also have the opportunity to study other specific subjects that align with your own personal interests. Our close ties with major art museums and other cultural organisations both in the Netherlands and abroad mean that the academic and practical work are closely linked.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Dutch students will spend a semester in a major art museum abroad while students from other countries intern at a major Dutch or Flemish art museum. You may also wish to study at another university for one semester. To date, our students have undertaken placements at approximately twenty institutions in eight different countries. Whatever your choice, your internship or study abroad will be tailored to your own individual interests.

AFTER GRADUATION

The degree also emphasises the management of strategic issues that arise in the sector, through the specialist modules of marketing, business development and management, leadership and cross cultural management.

Field trip

Postgraduate students enrolled in the MSc International Tourism and Hospitality Management join a residential five day trip Semester 2. For the last three years we have been to Belfast where we study the processes of city marketing. On your return we analyse the issues that the city faces in becoming a competitive destination and you write a City Marketing plan for Belfast.

International Tourism and Hospitality Management Top-up

If you already hold the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management from either the Confederation for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) or the Organisations for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) you can top-up your qualification to a full MSc by studying a research methods module and researching and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

The degree is jointly delivered with ESHotels in Paris enabling you to integrate with students from this course when you jointly participate on a field trip.

Teaching and learning

Classroom teaching includes a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops and guest lectures from industry stakeholders. We undertake a real life business development scenario with our industry partner Merlin Entertainments and undertake a residential field trip in Semester 2.

The nature of the teaching and assessment will allow you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to their preferred setting (e.g. public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; UK, European or International).

We are currently negotiating a partnership with InHolland University, Amsterdam, where you could study Semester 1 in Amsterdam and complete Semester 2 and the dissertation at LSBU (This option is open to UK and EU students only).

Department staff are experts in their respective fields of urban, environment, tourism, heritage and leisure and related educational policy. Many have professional affiliations, appointed positions and research links, for example with the Association for Tourism in Higher Education, Local Economy, The Landscape Research Group, The Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM), the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Tourism Society. We integrate these links into our teaching wherever possible.

Tools and knowledge

The course develops the appropriate skills, tools and knowledge to operate innovatively in the global tourism and hospitality environments. The nature of the teaching and assessment allows you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to your preferred setting (e.g public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; related policy and government organisations; UK, European or international).

Placements

If you are a home or EU student you may wish to consider undertaking a voluntary year-long work placement in the UK or overseas to gain, extend or seek variety in your experience within the industry prior to studying with us. If you undertake such a placement you may use this as the basis for an extended industry-related management project instead of the traditional dissertation. This is subject to prior approval by the Course Director and must be an investigation into an aspect of management that is worthy of investigation and is subject to the usual academic discipline.

This option is not open to overseas students, as Home Office regulations mean that overseas students are unable to get a visa for the placement year.

Professional links

We have a wide range of industry speakers on the course and you undertake a range of projects that bring you into contact with managers from the sector. In particular, you'll undertake a research project for the global attractions company Merlin Entertainments in Semester 1 where you analyse their operations and policies, develop solutions to a particular challenge and report back directly to their managers.

The Neurasmus curricula are completely embedded in international-oriented local Master programs of the partner universities. Program structure

At the application stage, students choose the main track they wish to follow. This defines their first year mobility. Depending on the track chosen, students spend their first and second semesters in Amsterdam/Göttingen /Berlin/Bordeaux. The Board of Education agrees on the first, second or third wish according to the selection ranking and intake capacity of partner institutions. At the end of the first semester, students choose a subspecialty which defines the partner university(ies) for the 2nd year. It is part of the student’s Personal Training Plan (PTP).

Students have up to the end of first year/start of third semester to choose the subject of their Master Thesis. Students then spend their third and fourth semesters in one or two locations: Amsterdam/Göttingen/Berlin/Bordeaux/Laval.

Semester 1 and 2: Core curriculum

  • Students are introduced to the different domains of Neuroscience and provided with the basic knowledge they need through a commonly agreed core curriculum (core courses). In addition, every student conducts research projects (laboratory rotations) in different participating departments. Research projects involve experimental work, data analysis and a written laboratory report.

Semester 3: Advanced courses

  • The choice of the advanced courses (30 ECTS), in association with the initial track, will define the subspeciality training obtained by the student.

Semester 4: Master thesis

  • Students complete a six month research project or industrial placement leading to a Master Thesis (30 ECTS). It takes place in a location defined according to the Personal Training Plan. This location must be chosen in collaboration with the affiliated partner university.

Professional accreditation

The MSc in Spatial Planning is fully accredited by both the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This means that on graduation you can complete the Assessment of Professional Competence programmes of these professional bodies and become a full member.

In order to attain full accreditation for both the RTPI and RICS, graduates must combine the Postgraduate Diploma in Spatial Planning with one of our specialist master's programmes. These include: an MSc in Environmental Assessment and Management, an MSc in Historic Conservation, an MSc in Urban Planning: Developing and Transitional Regions, or the MA in Urban Design.

Teaching and learning

Learning methods include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, and practical and project work. Some modules include site visits and fieldwork.

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, involving approximately 200 hours of personal study and approximately 36 hours of staff contact, normally delivered through three-hour teaching blocks over a 12-week period.

Approach to assessment

Each course module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or design work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations and practical exercises.

Field trips

The MSc in Spatial Planning includes a compulsory overseas field trip that is part of the two semester 1 core modules. The field trip is designed to provide students with practical examples and experience of planning in another European country.

The trip usually takes place in mid-November and normally includes three to four nights away from the UK. In the past, this field trip has been to Barcelona, Amsterdam and Lyon. The teaching staff are constantly reviewing new destinations that can best contribute to students' overall planning education.

Other half or full-day field trips often form part of the individual programmes of specialist modules.

Attendance pattern
