Airworthiness is at the forefront of aviation development. It is vital that staff have sufficient knowledge and skill to apply principles in design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of aircraft to both develop and maintain airworthiness. This part-time course has been developed to meet industry demand for qualified airworthiness specialists and addresses key aspects of aircraft design, construction, operation and maintenance.

Who is it for?

The Airworthiness Master's course is highly flexible and designed to meet the needs of individuals who are balancing work commitments with study. It is especially relevant to engineers and technologists working in the airworthiness field of aviation safety, either in a regulatory authority or in the industry. The format is especially suitable for those who wish to enhance and focus their knowledge in a structured but flexible part-time format while continuing to work.

The subject of your research project can be chosen to match the research needs of your employer and/or your own career ambitions.

Why this course?

This course provides an academically recognised high standard of qualification related to the wide spectrum of technologies met in aerospace. It offers a wide range of technical knowledge in the context of related regulatory and safety issues, a background that managers in today's aerospace industry need to possess. A detailed knowledge of airworthiness issues early in the product development stage helps the downstream business operation which must balance cost and safety. This will also help to optimise the aircraft design, modification and/or the repair process.

We appreciate that students will be balancing employment with study which is why we aim to minimise the number of visits required to Cranfield University and offer modules in one-week blocks. Students undertaking the full MSc programme would be expected to come to Cranfield ten times in the 2-3 year period. We are well located for part-time students from across the world and offer a range of support services for off-site students.

We welcome delegates from all over the world and this provides a unique learning environment for both students and delegates who benefit from the mix of experience and backgrounds. Attendance of our short courses is a popular entry route onto this course as delegates are able to carry their credits forward onto the Airworthiness programme which a choice of qualification levels available to choose from:

  • Master’s Degree (MSc) option of this course consists of a taught element (ten modules), an individual research project and course portfolio
  • Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) option of this course consists of only the taught element where students must complete six modules
  • Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) option of this course consists of a taught element (ten modules) and course portfolio.

Informed by Industry

The Airworthiness MSc is directed by an Industrial Advisory Board comprising senior representatives from industry. The board acts in an advisory role, assessing the content of the course and its relevance to present industrial needs. Current members include representatives from:

  • Airbus
  • Rolls-Royce
  • Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Accreditation

The MSc in Airworthiness will meet, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Accredited MSc graduates who also have a BEng (Hons) accredited for CEng will be able to show that they have satisfied the educational base for CEng registration.

Course details

There are seven mandatory modules which aim to provide you with a common basis of knowledge and skills on which the specialist options can build further. You are then free to choose three optional modules in line with your developing interests.

The course uses a range of assessment types. Students can expect to have written examinations, assignments and presentations as well as the group design and individual research projects. The range of assessment methods have been chosen to develop skills and be of relevance to the taught materials.

Individual project

The individual research project is completed by students who wish to complete the MSc qualification of the Airworthiness course. The project is normally undertaken in the final year and brings together the learning from the taught components to consolidate learning. The subject of the project is normally chosen to reflect the needs of the sponsoring organisation and/or to match your career ambitions. Project topics represent the broad range of areas covered by the course.

Previous Individual Research Projects have included:

  • An assessment of the applicability of an ageing aircraft audit to the microlight aircraft type
  • The justification of ALARP by Ministry of Defence aircraft project team
  • Introduction of a service bulletin review process in the military environment.

Your career

Many of our students are already in employment with aerospace/defence companies and choose to pursue an internationally recognised qualification with Cranfield University to enhance their career. Graduates are able to use this qualification to obtain secure permanent positions abroad.

Who is it for?

The course draws students from the UK and Western Europe giving an eclectic mix to the classroom environment. Maximum number of places: 25 per year.

Why this course?

Today’s military aviation platforms are complex systems and it is essential, therefore, that they are deployed and maintained in such a way as to ensure their continued airworthiness and the safety of the crew operating them. To achieve this requires engineers to be cognisant of a broad range of aerospace engineering, airworthiness and safety disciplines.

The MSc distinguishes itself from similar courses offered by leading UK Universities by offering one focused specifically on the Military context and offers unique subject areas unavailable elsewhere. You will be taught by staff, primarily from Cranfield Defence and Security and the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing , many of them world leaders in their field. Visiting lecturers also include experts from industry, research establishments, and the MoD.

Accreditation

This degree has been accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Course details

The course is delivered on a part-time basis and It contains five compulsory modules. Students choose one further module to complete the PgCert or a further seven modules to complete the PgDip (MSc taught phase).

This provides students with the flexibility to tailor their studies to account for prior educational and work experience and the current and future needs of their employment role. The modules taken in the taught phase of the MSc (the PgDip) provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to complete a research-based project, which forms the final part of the Masters award.

Individual project

The individual research project will focus on a topical subject area covered by the taught phase of the course. The subject of the project can be chosen to match the research needs of the sponsor and/or the interests of the individual student and students are encouraged to utilise their employment resources to place the project in context. Lecturing staff on both campuses will undertake supervision of research projects.

Assessment

A mixture of lectures, laboratory demonstrations, tutorials, essays, examinations, individual and group design exercises and the students are expected to write written assignments. In addition, for MSc students a written dissertation research project and viva voce examination.

Who is it for?

Manufacturers of modern aircraft are demanding more lightweight and more durable structures. Structural integrity is a major consideration of today’s aircraft fleet. For an aircraft to economically achieve its design specification and satisfy airworthiness regulations, a number of structural challenges must be overcome. This course trains engineers to meet these challenges, and prepares them for careers in civil and military aviation. It is suitable if you have a background in aeronautical or mechanical engineering, or relevant industrial experience.

We have been at the forefront of postgraduate education in aerospace engineering since 1946. A unique feature of the course is that we have four external examiners; two from industry who assess the group design project and two from academia who assess the individual research project.

We usually hold taught modules over three to five consecutive days. In some cases we use other teaching methods, including distance and work-based learning. You'll organise your work-based learning with your module leader, this ensures it's tailored to your needs and the learning outcomes are achievable.

Assessment

Assessment is normally by assignment. At this level, we do not need to test your understanding, but rather your ability to implement your newfound skills and knowledge. Assignments will normally be about a real industrial case study, or a live project in your workplace.

Assessment methods

You will be continually assessed coursework or a mixture of coursework and exams. The dissertation has three elements of assessment: a thesis, a poster presentation, and a viva voce examination.

Facilities available to our students have been fully approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). With access to an EASA-approved suite of practical training facilities, our students can use a range of industry-standard facilities.

Our Aerospace Centre is home to a Jetstream 31 Twin Turboprop aircraft, assembled with Honeywell TPE331 Engines and Rockwell-Collins Proline II Avionics. It has a 19-passenger configuration.

The EASA-approved suite contains training and practical workshops and laboratories. Each area contains the tools and equipment required to facilitate the instruction of either mechanical or avionic practical tasks as required by the CAA.

Students use the TQ two-shaft gas turbine rig to investigate the inner workings of a gas turbine engine by collecting real data and subsequently analysing them for engine performance.

Our sub-sonic wind tunnel is used for basic aerodynamic instruction, testing and demonstrations on various aerofoil shapes and configurations.

The single-seater, full motion, three axes Merlin MP521 flight simulator can be programmed for several aircraft types that include the Airbus A320 and the Cessna 150.

The demands on aircraft components are extremely robust, as they must adhere to the extreme loads and stresses the vehicle is exposed to, as well as rigorous safety standards. This course will give you the opportunity to learn the required skills and techniques to design aircraft components, as well as understand the theory behind them.

Facilities

As part of the School of Applied Science, Computing and Engineering, candidates will have access to state-of-art Merlin flight simulator for design and testing their own aircraft, will learn and use cutting-edge design, analysis and simulation software including MATLAB/Simulink, CATIA v5, ANSYS, and ABAQUS, and will have access to subsonic and supersonic wind tunnel facilities and rapid prototyping facilities.

The university has invested £500K in engineering equipment in recent years, in association with an investment of equipment from major companies and local suppliers.

At Wrexham Glyndŵr University we are on the door step of one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world, Airbus, with a large number of first and second tier suppliers in the locality. Many of the academic staff have industrial experience spanning a broad range of engineering areas and working levels.

Areas of study

The cross-field programme covers the branches of aviation engineering, aviation mechanics and aviation electronics enabling the graduates to get involved in design of air and space vehicles, their systems and elements, to perform assessment of their condition and performance, to deal with engineering issues in functionality, reliability and communication of information, and to conduct analytical, modelling and experimental research.

Proficiency in English. Language requirements: IELTS ≥6.0, TOEFL ≥85, CEFR ≥C1, or equivalent

Student’s competences:

– Analytical thinking

– Knowledge of requirements for aviation and spacecraft airworthiness, reliability of their functional systems and components, safety assessment methods and ability to apply them in practice
