The MSc in Airport Management has been designed to provide you with a mid-career education. If you have been employed in the aviation industry for at least two years and have the desire to develop your career in the fast-growing airport industry, this programme is for you.

The knowledge you gain from the wide range of module topics will enable you to make a greater contribution to your organisation. A key feature of the course is the development of shared values, offering you an invaluable opportunity to meet and work with other professions within the aviation industry.

Objectives

The City, University of London Airport Management MSc will enable you to:

  • Develop your knowledge of the complex disciplines and various technical, operational and financial pressures impacting airport management and the various ground-handling areas
  • Evaluate and apply relevant theories within the airport domain
  • Understand the interaction of all the major components of the airport industry ­– from organisations, governments, airlines, alliances and airport regulatory authorities to suppliers, manufacturers, staff and unions
  • Discuss, examine, synthesise and apply a conceptual understanding and knowledge of the various processes within the airport domain
  • Prepare for a career in airport management.

This MSc Airport Management is currently in the approval process with RAeS in London and the Airport Council International (ACI) in Montreal.

Teaching and learning

The modules of this course involve a variety of teaching methods, including lectures and tutorials, requiring attendance, plus breakout sessions. These will involve group work and presentations. Case studies may be handed out for study in the evening and discussion the next day.

Leading academic staff and a number of specialist lecturers from the aviation industry teach each module over an intensive three-day period.

During each module, you are required to work in a small team to examine the relevant issues and to present results. Each module has been designed to develop a specific skill. There is a significant amount of independent study within each module for you to read literature related to the module you are studying. The online module page also provides blogs and forums, enabling you to interact with your lecturers and other students.

Assessment

Assessment of the taught modules is undertaken through a combination of the following elements:

  • Written assignments: between 1,500 and 3,000 words per module, focusing on topics relevant to the individual modules (both elective and core modules).
  • Written exam: lasting 90 minutes. This occurs at the end of the last day of the core module delivery. The essay questions are only revealed 'on the day', which students must complete without the use of any reference materials during the assessment.

Modules

This MSc comprises 180 credits – 120 credits of taught modules and the final project of 60 credits.  You must pass an Induction Workshop, then pass the three core modules of 15 credits each. You will then choose 5 electives of 15 credits, before taking the final project for 60 credits.

You will begin the MSc Airport Management with the Induction Workshop, which is assessed by completing a 2,500 to 3,000-word piece of individual coursework, serving as the final acceptance assessment for the MSc Programme.

During your MSc, you will take the following core modules:

  • Human Resource Management (15 credits)
  • Final Project (60 credits)

The Final Project/Dissertation is undertaken by all students of the Airport Management Programme and must focus on an airport management topic. This is a substantial piece of writing, deriving from academic research that you have undertaken. The Dissertation is the result of your independent work carried out under the guidance of an appointed supervisor.

Course details

Nine compulsory taught modules, a group project and an individual research project.

Group project

In April students are divided into groups of seven to ten, and asked to solve a current airport planning and management challenge. The group project draws upon the learning from the taught modules and applies it to real-life simulation. Each member is required to take responsibility for a key area, for example, market analysis, capital expenditure forecast or terminal design. The group submits a report of their findings and recommendations and delivers a presentation to staff, students and industry experts. 

Projects are usually supported by industry and potential future employers value this experience. Industry involvement is an integral component to the group project, to give you first-hand experience of working within real life challenging situations. 

Previous Group Projects have included:

  • Evaluating the business case for extending the runway at Birmingham Airport
  • The preparation of development plans for two new airports in South-West England
  • Designing a new passenger terminal for Leeds-Bradford International Airport.

Individual project

The individual research project is the single largest component of this course and is an opportunity to study a problem in detail. Sponsoring organisations may co-operate in the choice of a suitable subject. Project topics vary widely and are often based on your area of interest. The individual research project component typically takes place between April and August.

Previous individual research projects have included:

  • An analysis of the hubbing strategy of Air France/KLM at Amsterdam Schiphol airport
  • The implications of secondary slot trading on airport revenues
  • Air traffic distribution in a multi-airport environment; the Mumbai metropolitan region

The MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a 16 week work placement component at a company or a consultancy. This unique feature of the work placement distinguishes our programme from other similar Masters in the country.

The Applied Corporate Brand Management programme covers issues of branding in blue chip companies, the service industry, banks, petroleum companies, lifestyle organisations, corporate brand heritage, nation and place branding.

You will examine the core contents of branding at the corporate level rather than at the product level. In other words, teaching on the programme focuses on branding of the corporation rather than branding the product.

A particular feature of our Applied Corporate Brand Management course is the use of case studies to contextualise contemporary theory and practice and the importance attached to class presentations to demonstrate the ability to apply theory in practice.
This interactive course, and the Strategic Corporate Brand Management and Consulting and Applied Corporate Branding modules in particular, allow you to engage with current industry experts who provide extra support and guidance in your coursework, classwork and presentations.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examinations place considerable emphasis on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Modes of study

1-year, full-time starting in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes seven modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

On completion of the placement, students proceed to find full-time employment in branding and advertising roles in the UK or abroad.

The purpose of the placement is to provide you with hands-on experience working with a brand consultant or a brand-related department of an organisation in the UK. It is an integral part of the course and you will receive support from the academic staff and the Professional Development Centre while on placement.

MBA students have the opportunity to embark annually on a Business Tour to one of the main economic hubs in the world, where they learn about operations of multinational corporations. The taught programme for the Air Transport Management masters starts in July and is comprised of ten modules (six compulsory and four optional). All the modules are completed over three one-week periods (two modules per week) so you are only expected to make three trips to Cranfield to complete the six compulsory modules in July, November and March. A key feature of the course is very strong industry links developed through a programme of industry site visits (to airlines and airport both in the UK and potentially overseas), visiting industry guest lecturers and client-based group and individual project work. All students also receive a subscription to the online news service Flightglobal Pro throughout the course of their study.

The award is seeking professional accreditation through the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and has recognition from the industry through its Industry Advisory Board. This programme has been developed in response to the growing demand for facilities management professionals with a mix of abilities from within the property and construction industries. Facilities management covers multiple disciplines and activities, enabling practitioners to be responsive to the needs of a particular building, its functional and organisational objectives.

The programme is flexible enough to enable students to tailor their studies to their particular needs and interests, thereby recognising the broad and diverse nature of the facilities management role, both within the UK and internationally.

Students develop a holistic view of the needs of the corporate environment and enhance their expertise in key areas of competence. They are also able to advance their personal transferable skills in areas such as information technology and telecommunications.

The aim of the programme is to develop students' abilities to co-ordinate the physical workplace with the people and work of the organisation, in order to facilitate the effective and efficient use of business-related property.

Facilities

The university has invested £76 million in a new building to house the campus library, TV studios and academic facilities for disciplines including architecture, design and construction. Stockwell Street, where the programme will be delivered, is a short walk from the university's buildings on the Old Royal College site.

JUNIOR CONSULTANT PROJECT
The students work with firms on a digital and social media strategy. They act as junior consultant by developing a digital marketing strategy. At the end of the project, the student will be able to apply the concepts, tools and methods taught during the course in a professional context and to coordinate a mission from the formulation of the recommendations to the operational expectations of customers.

PROFESSIONAL PROJECT
Students must develop their professional project by working on their resume, cover letter, and presentation. This course enlightens students on how to develop and map their future orientations and careers
